The chosen kids admired that Pokemon. No matter where he looked, it was obvius that he was legendary. Its ominous silhouette walked in front of them, and he kept looking at them. It was then that, after a few seconds, he asked them:
"Are you really the chosen children?" asked, "You don't look like one"
Okay, now this was quite strange: every Pokemon they had encountered so far had called them 'heroes' or 'the chosen ones', even the legendaries. But now, did Xerneas doubt them?
"You are… Xerneas," Zack said, "The Pokemon of Life? What do you mean that we don't look like one?"
Xerneas did not respond immediately, but instead turned its gaze to the gigantic tree behind it and walked towards it. The kids had been left wondering about that comment, not knowing what to respond back; Then, they followed Xerneas towards the tree.
"It's true!" Rex suddenly remembered, "Mar…or say…Hyzard!"
"If you're talking about that non-chosen abomination, you were lucky to survive," Xerneas mentioned, without even looking at them, it was just looking at the tree.
"You saved us, Mr. Xerneas?" Rose asked, "Thank you very much then."
"Feeling gratitude is not necessary," Xerneas explained, without turning again, "My duty is to preserve and give life… unlike those invaders who only seek power to wage a senseless war that only takes the life of plants and living beings. Mew told me that the chosen children would be the answer, but even he is succumbing…"
"Did something bad happen to Mew?" Rex asked, "Was he captured?"
"Mew brings happiness and existence to the Pokemon world… The invaders bring with them hatred, ambition, aggression, anger and desire for power… if we had to compare them, dark matter and the heart of humans are like two drops of contaminated water. After communicating with the chosen ones, the negativity increased in such a way that he fell ill and will wake up when that evil disappears from this world.
The kids were speechless at the news. Luke spoke up and asked:
"What about Dialga or Palkia?"
"Crossing over to this world by other methods that are not by the will of the Pokemon world has consequences. This is the moment when we need a group of chosen children…"
"But…" Rex said, "We are the chosen children!"
Finally, Xerneas turned to stare at them, it was unknown if it was a look of hatred or doubt.
"If you are really the chosen children, why did you lose to Regigigas in the human world?" asked Xerneas, "Why did you lose to that non-chosen abomination?"
"How do you know that we fight Regigigas in the human world?" Mina asked.
"Because that miraculous light that you witnessed when you were going to die was my work: I gave their devices the energy to put Regigigas into torpor. He will wake up after 100 years, free of everything. Now, I would like to know your answer, why did you lose?
"They're too strong…" Dylan apologized, "They've fused humans and Pokemon into some kind of…"
"You have also fused and yet you can't beat them"
The children were silent again: Xerneas had good questions to counter each one's answers.
"We already know that they fight because of an evil that they believe to be the right" the legendary continued, "What cause do you serve?"
"Well, we're the good guys…" Rose began to say, but Xerneas asked again:
"And how do you prove to be good? What is needed to form a world that ends senseless war or at least, where it does not reign?"
The kids spent a few minutes thinking about the answer to that and, if you were one of them, you would know that it is very difficult to find an answer for it. Xerneas spoke again.
"Humans are pretty weird: they rush into the silliest time of their lives as quickly as possible and then want to stay there as long as they can. They don't see what they had until they lose it and, mostly, it happens unintentionally... I know that you saved our world from Darkai, but you are no longer the same kids who possessed those flames of hope: they have become small compared to before"
The kids looked at each other: had they really changed so much in them to say that? Was there no way to win then?
"So... we can't do anything for anyone anymore?" Rex asked, "We can't fight?"
"I said the flame had shrunk," Xerneas contradicted, "Not that it had disappeared…"
Xerneas approached Rex and focused its eyes on his. This seemed uncomfortable to the Charmander until the legendary finally said:
"You have to learn to value what you are and why you must fight for it, even in the face of the threat of death"
Then, it turned to Katie. She also seemed to feel uncomfortable about it: it was as Xerneas saw her deepest thoughts.
"You need to believe in yourself and in the gift that was given to you," it told her.
Next, it did the same with Zack.
"You have forgotten the key to working in a pack"
Later, Rose.
"You get carried away by superficiality. The shadow of egocentrism begins to grow over you."
Then, Luke.
"You are sincere with others, but are you sincere with yourself?"
Next, Dylan.
"You are very intelligent and skilled. But it is important to be a wise?"
And finally, Mina.
"You need to express that feeling of appreciation that she gived you, even if you don't realize it"
In each comment, there was a deep truth that each of the kids felt deep inside themselves. It was... like waking up from a long dream and returning to reality. However, they still didn't know the answers.
"It's normal for you to remain silent," Xerneas told them when he saw that no one answered him back, "Look at the tree, please."
Xerneas pointed to the tree of life and the kids looked up at the top: seven tiny lights descended towards them in the form of small golden medallions, which had a different symbol engraved on each of them.
"These are the guides to your keys," Xerneas explained, "With the correct attribute that you show as true humans and Pokemon, you will find the keys. And, when the two merge, you will gain unusual power, even greater than that of a Legendary."
"So where do we start?" Rex asked.
"There's not much time. Each of you must find the roots of each Pokemon you represent…" it turned to Rex and Katie, "You must go to Charicific Valley"
Next, it turned to Zack.
"Your destination is the Amp Plains"
Later, Rose.
"You must go to the Floaroma Meadow"
Then, Luke.
"You must fly to the Eastern Cliffs, next to the sea."
Next, Dylan.
"You will find a teacher in the Ninja Village, Kinjuju at the West"
And finally, Mina.
"The Rocky Mountains of the North, there you must go"
"Do we have them all on the map?" Rex asked Rose.
"Yes, it seems we should split up and go to these locations," she pointed out, on the map they had.
"Look, do you think it's a good idea to meet up in Paradise when we're done?" Dylan said.
"It's a good idea," said Rex, "Listen friends, I know we'll go our separate ways, but Xerneas is right: we must find ourselves and become stronger to save the Pokemon world," he put his hand in the center, "Let's do it. Ok?"
The others joined their hands.
"Okay," they said in unison.
"I suppose you've decided…" Xerneas told them, "Then I'll send you near each other's destination. And remember: the medallion is only a guide and will work with the correct attribute. Now, go and show us that you really are the chosen children…"
Xerneas shook its massive antlers, and the next second, the chosen children had disappeared in flashes of rainbow light.
