Kristy and the Interrupted Kiss
Kristy isn't blind. She sees the faux shy smiles that Stacey shoots Sam's way. She sees the way his eyes follow the lines and curves of Stacey's body when she dives into the pool. When she brings it up (because she's never been one to beat around the bush, has she?), they both deny it. But they like each other. Kristy is sure of that.
And so, it shouldn't come as a surprise when she bursts into Sam's room and finds the two of them perched on Sam's bed. They're just kissing, thank god. Kristy's eyes couldn't have survived much more than that. But they are kissing. Stacey's hands are sure and steady, wrapped around his neck with her fingers twirled in his hair. Sam, on the other hand, is literally shaking. The two spring apart quickly at the intrusion, but Kristy's eyes snap close and she hurriedly leaves.
Stacey quickly follows her, although Kristy wishes she wouldn't. It's too embarrassing, looking over at Stacey and only being able to picture her locking lips with her brother. Stacey although—always the confident one—doesn't seem to have any qualms. She reaches out easily, grabbing Kristy's hand and forcing her to face her.
"Don't worry," Stacey says. She gazes imploring at Kristy, searching for any sign of her infamous fury. "We're not dating or anything."
"Oh." Kristy blinks. She tries not to sound too accusatory when she says, "Then maybe you shouldn't be kissing."
The corners of Stacey's lips turn downwards. "We're just having fun."
"Right."
"I thought you'd be pleased," Stacey says. At Kristy's confused look, she clarifies, "Pleased that we're not dating, I mean. You've always said you didn't want me to date him."
It's Kristy's turn to frown. Her friend isn't wrong. She's never wanted the two to date. She's told them—both together and separately—and she doesn't think it would be a good idea. If, instead of rolling their eyes, they'd asked why, she would have said that it's not right for a friend to date a friend's brother or for a brother to date a sister's friend—that it's some kind of conflict of interest. That she didn't want to have to choose if they ever broke up. It's only now, with the flush on Sam's cheeks fresh in Kristy's mind, that she realises that her disapproval had always stemmed from something else entirely.
"I just think he likes you," Kristy says slowly. As always, the words are flooding out before she has time to think about what she's saying. "I think he likes you more than you like him."
"Oh, it's not that serious." Stacey lets out a giggle. "Honestly, it's like I said. We're just having fun."
"Does he know that?"
"Yeah. Course he does." Stacey nudges Kristy's shoulder playfully. Her voice takes on a teasing tone as she says, "But it's sweet that you care so much about Sam. I didn't realise you cared so much."
"I don't!"
"Yeah, yeah."
And although she'll never admit it, there's a heaviness in Kristy's stomach that she just can't seem to shake. All she can see is Sam—nervous and pink—falling into Stacey, and Stacey...boy-crazy Stacey, failing to catch him. It's a thought that makes her heart ache.
