A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 2 Chapter 31
Harry is just as surprised to see Dobby there as Bailey is. He's just more vocal about it.
"Dobby," he exclaimed, eyes wide. "So, this is your master? The Family you serve is the Malfoys."
Judging by how Dobby recoils from Lucius Malfoy and eyeing him in fear Harry should've kept his mouth shut about that.
Jaw clenched, blazing eyes promising pain, Lucius Malfoy scowled "I'll deal with you later." He then marches up to the desk with Dobby trailing behind him. He then shoves Harry aside with the snake head on his cane. "Out of the way, Potter."
Bailey can sense his ill intentions. A low growl sounded in her throat and she lowered into a half crouch.
"Quiet," snapped Lucius Malfoy, brandishing his cane at her.
Bailey just snarls louder in defiance and obvious dislike, ears flattened to the side of her head, baring her teeth at him and flattening her belly to the floor.
"Still," said Harry and she froze obediently.
Sneering at Bailey and choosing to ignore her, turning his attention to Dumbledore, Lucius Malfoy said "So! You've come back. The governors suspended you, but you still saw fit to return to Hogwarts."
Dobby came over to stand beside her and Harry, listening quietly and nervously wringing his fingers together.
Smiling serenely, spreading his hands in a placating manner, Dumbledore said "Well, you see, Lucius, the other 11 governors contacted me today. It was something like being caught in a hailstorm of owls, to tell the truth. They'd heard that Arthur Weasley's daughter had been killed and wanted me back here at once. They seemed to think I was the best man for the job after all. Very strange tales they told me, too…Several of them seemed to think that you had threatened to curse their families if they didn't agree to suspend me in the first place."
Eyes slits of fury under the accusation and that his own plan to get rid of Dumbledore had been thwarted, Lucius spat "Preposterous."
"Then again they could've been mistaken," said Dumbledore although the expression on his face reveals he knows otherwise.
"So, have you stopped the attacks yet? Have you caught the culprit," said Mr. Malfoy, raising his head imperiously.
Nodding, Dumbledore confirmed, "We have."
Sharply, Mr. Malfoy demanded "Well? Who was it?"
Shrugging, holding up the small book with the large hole through it from the basilisk fang, Dumbledore said "The same person as last time, Lucius. But this time, Lord Voldemort was acting through somebody else. By means of this diary."
Dumbledore is watching Mr. Malfoy closely. He wasn't the only one. Bailey hadn't removed her eyes from Mr. Malfoy's face the second he entered the room. But now something separate draws her eye.
It's Dobby. He is acting strangely, more odd than usual.
The small house elf is alternatively pointing at Mr. Malfoy, the diary, and then hitting himself hard on the head with his fist in self-punishment.
Licking his lips, Mr. Malfoy said "I see."
Speaking in a level voice, still staring at Mr. Malfoy straight in the eye, Dumbledore said "A clever plan. Fortunately, our Young Mr. Potter discovered it. Just think if Harry and his friend Ron hadn't discovered this book then Ginny Weasley might have taken all the blame. No one would ever have been able to prove she hadn't acted of her own free will."
"I see…," said Mr. Malfoy, slowly.
Something tells Bailey that's exactly what Mr. Malfoy had intended by his disappointed tone. It would explain his eagerness to know the identity of the perpetrator.
Wait a minute. Ginny told them she found the diary in one of her secondhand schoolbooks that she got that day in Diagon Alley at Flourish and Blotts. Mr. Malfoy had taken out her Transfiguration textbook right before he and Mr. Weasley had gotten into that fight. Also, he was the one to put it back into her cauldron. Hypothetically, Mr. Malfoy could've easily slipped the diary into the pages when that bookshelf came tumbling down around them. It was the perfect cover he needed.
All at once Dobby's behavior makes perfect sense.
Bailey wants to rip Mr. Malfoy's head off. He's the reason Dreamer came so near to death.
"And imagine what might have happened then…The Weasleys are one of our most prominent pureblood families. Imagine the effect on Arthur Weasley and his Muggle Protection Act, if his own daughter was discovered attacking and killing Muggleborns. Very fortunate indeed the diary was discovered, and Riddle's memories were wiped from it permanently. Who knows what the consequences might have been otherwise…," said Dumbledore, pleasantly.
Another incentive for what Mr. Malfoy did.
In stiff distaste, Mr. Malfoy said "Very fortunate."
Finally, Harry is caught up to speed with Bailey, figuring out what Dobby is so desperately trying to communicate to him.
Stepping forward, Harry said "Don't you want to know how Ginny got hold of that diary, Mr. Malfoy?"
Rounding on him, standing to the extent of his intimidating height, scornfully, Mr. Malfoy said "How should I know how the stupid little girl got hold of it?"
Accusingly, Harry stated "Because you gave it to her. In Flourish and Blotts. You picked up her old Transfiguration book and slipped the diary inside it, didn't you?"
White hands clenching and unclenching, Mr. Malfoy hissed "Prove it."
Lightly, Dumbledore said "Oh, no one will be able to do that. Not now that Riddle has vanished from the book. On the other hand, I would advise you, Lucius, not to go giving out any more of Lord Voldemort's old school things. If any more of them find their way into innocent hands, I think Arthur Weasley, for one, will make sure they are traced back to you."
A prospect that Lucius Malfoy will never grant the Weasleys the satisfaction of achieving.
Backed into a corner Lucius Malfoy loathingly decides to make a tactical retreat.
Turning to his house elf, Mr. Malfoy said "We're going, Dobby!"
Mr. Malfoy wrenches open the door, brutally kicking Dobby right through it. They can clearly hear Dobby squealing with pain all the way down the corridor.
Since the first moment, they met in Privet Drive where Dobby began all this trouble Bailey's shown the house elf nothing but disdain and contempt. But hearing him get beaten by Mr. Malfoy and all he's risked to do the right thing she can't help but feel sorry for the poor bloke. It softens her toward him considerably.
Bailey recalls something Dobby told them about house elf culture, and it gives her an idea.
Yes, that just might work out nicely. A good way to pay him back.
Whimpering Bailey tugs at the bottom of Harry's pant leg.
"What is it, Bailey," he asked, frowning.
Bailey moves the fabric to where they can see the sock sticking out of his shoe. She then noses at the sock and then goes over to the desk, touching the diary with her paw.
Sucking in a sharp inhale, hurriedly, Harry said "Professor Dumbledore, can I give that diary back to Mr. Malfoy, please?"
Calmly, eyes twinkling with mischief, Dumbledore said "Certainly, Harry, but hurry. The feast, remember. And I do believe you can bring the pups to the feast as well. No sense in them being left out of the celebration."
Smiling in appreciation, Harry said "Thank you, Sir."
Harry grabbed the diary and dashed out of the office with Bailey. They need to move quickly before Mr. Malfoy and Dobby depart the grounds. Harry quickly takes off his shoe, pulls off the dirty sock, and slips it inside the diary's pages. Harry gives it to Bailey as they catch up to the two at the top of the stairs.
"Mr. Malfoy, I've got something for you," said Harry, gesturing at Bailey. "Go on."
Playing her part Bailey trots over to Mr. Malfoy and places the diary in his hand with her teeth.
Sneering Mr. Malfoy passes the diary off to Dobby.
Coldly, he said "You'll meet the same sticky end as your parents one of these days, Harry Potter. They were meddlesome fools, too. Come, Dobby."
Pointing at the diary, Harry whispered "Open it."
Confused Dobby does so and finds the sock hidden there. He freezes staring at the sock as if it's a priceless treasure.
"Master has given a sock," said Dobby in wonderment. "Master gave it to Dobby."
"What's that," spat Mr. Malfoy. "What did you say?"
In a mixture of disbelief and joy, happy tears brimming in his eyes, holding the piece of clothing in his hands, Dobby said "Master has presented Dobby with clothes. Dobby is free."
Seething a disgruntled Mr. Malfoy glares sinisterly at Harry.
Smirking in triumph Harry lifts his pant leg and showing the shoe missing its sock.
"You've lost me, my servant, boy," roared Mr. Malfoy, livid, furiously lunging at Harry in revenge.
There's no need for Bailey to intervene.
Free from the constraints of enslavement Dobby acts of his own free will to protect them.
"You shall not harm, Harry Potter," said Dobby, fiercely throwing Mr. Malfoy back all the way across with his own brand of magic. "You shall go now. You shall not touch Harry Potter. You shall go now."
Mr. Malfoy has no choice. Especially with Bailey threatening to bear down on him alongside him. With a last incensed and frustrated stare at the trio, he swings his cloak around him and hastens out of sight.
Gazing up at Harry in adoration, shrilly, Dobby said "Harry Potter freed Dobby! Harry Potter set Dobby free!"
"Least I could do, Dobby. And it wasn't all me. It was all Bailey's idea. I just helped her do it," said Harry, grinning modestly.
Bailey readily accepts the hug Dobby gives her around the neck, face splitting into a wide toothy smile. Where before he'd blanch whenever he saw her now Dobby embraces her gladly without fear.
There's nothing for him to be afraid of now that he's been freed from slavery forever.
Bailey's tail wags, sweeping over the floor. She places a single paw over Dobby's shoulder, returning the gesture in kind.
"I've just got one question, Dobby. You told me all this had nothing to do with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, remember? Well-."
"It was a clue, Sir," said Dobby, his eyes wide, pulling on Harry's sock with shaking hands. "Was giving you a clue. The Dark Lord, before he changed his name, could be freely named, you, see?"
Makes sense…sort of.
Weakly, Harry said "Right. Well, I'd better go. There's a feast and my friend Hermione should be awake by now…"
"Is there nothing I can do to repay you," appealed Dobby, beseechingly.
"There is one thing," answered Harry.
"Anything, Sir," said Dobby, devotedly.
"Never try to save my life again," said Harry, grinning.
Dobby hunches his shoulders smiling sheepishly at Harry's humor. And with a final loud crack, Dobby disappears on them.
This specific Hogwarts feast is a truly joyous occasion.
Everybody was in their pajamas even the teachers and the celebration lasted all night.
Before they came to the Great Hall, Harry and Bailey had gone down to Hagrid's hut to retrieve the pups. All of them were excited to be out and about attending. Even more so when Bailey relayed to them that Dreamer was going to be ok and should be waking up from her petrification anytime now. None of them could contain their rambunctiousness. Not even the prim and proper girls. All six of them were having the time of their lives. Apart from the Slytherin table the Bounder, Ranger, Bold, Friendly, Whisper, and Charmer had the run of the room. They went everywhere getting tidbits of food from whoever they could con into handing it over. Each time one of the pups does something relatively entertaining laughter fills the Great Hall. They do tricks, wrestle with each other in order to steal treats, and even go as far as to snatch some from the air as a dog would a frisbee.
From the corner of her eye, Bailey can see Charmer repeatedly go over to one specific person at the Hufflepuff table. A tall and handsome fifth-year boy that whom Bailey never really interacted before. Occasionally Charmer would leave but then come back just as quickly. The interest seemed to be reciprocated. No matter how many times Charmer would walk away this boy would always give her something from his plate, urging his friends to do the same.
Bailey is pleased that at least one of her broods made a new friend. That's very important.
Regardless of this, there's no way Bailey or her children would forget this night in more ways than one.
One by one all that were affected by the basilisk eventually show up revived, healthy, and whole in the Great Hall.
Filch wastes no time in taking his beloved Mrs. Norris in his arms. He hasn't put her down once after the feline was brought to him. Out of respect for what Mrs. Norris went through Bailey sternly tells her brood to leave the cat alone. They obey her command without question knowing she's not playing around about that.
Hermione came rushing in dashing over to Harry and Ron delighted that they found her research and solved the mystery on their own without her.
Justin arrives over from the Hufflepuff table to wring his hand and apologize endlessly for suspecting him in the first place when there had been no cause for him to.
At half past three Hagrid turns up with Fang bouncing around him acting like a puppy again. The ecstatic boarhound won't leave Hagrid's side for anything.
The best part is saved for last.
From the start of the feast Bailey is in the thick of all the fun, but, truthfully, she finds it difficult to find any enjoyment with Dreamer still missing. She's constantly looking at the doors waiting for Dreamer to make an appearance. After each one of the other victims comes forth Bailey eagerly watches the entrance for Dreamer to step inside. She has yet to do so.
After Hagrid took his place with Fang, Bailey would've turned her attention away from the main doors. Not even when a steak was waved in her face.
Bailey only must wait a little longer before she gets her heart's desire.
Suddenly Bailey can see Madam Pomfrey outside on the edge. She signals to Dumbledore up at the staff table and he calls for quiet leaving many of them bewildered as to the reason why because he doesn't rise to speak. Instead, Dumbledore looks expectantly at the doors in anticipation forcing others to do the same.
Bailey's heart pounds as she stares intently at the opening practically feeling like it's about to burst.
At long last Dreamer steps into the light with wary and uncertain steps at Madam Pomfrey's urging. One look inside, spotting her mother, and all that changes.
Barking in merry delight Dreamer breaks into a dead run in between the tables and Bailey does the same loping down the length until they meet right in the middle.
Bailey doesn't bother to contain the overwhelming love and relief to see Dreamer return to her. Dreamer whines and rips rubbing and pressing against her mother's chest as Bailey licks and nuzzles any part of Dreamer that she can reach. Bailey didn't know what she would've done if she'd lost her precious girl.
Bailey and Dreamer are soon surrounded as Bounder, Ranger, Friendly, Whisper, and Charmer join in the reunion, jumping around and tails wagging like crazy.
Bailey vows to never let anything like this happen to her pups again.
All at once applause explodes around them. It started with one person and then it rapidly spread across the Great Hall. So many crying and smiling at the heartfelt scene displayed before their very eyes.
Now it's all complete.
The large family settles down to enjoy the rest of the feast together.
Dreamer ends up getting a whole chicken to herself and savoring it to her heart's content.
Nothing can get better than this.
Authors Note:
Who do you think the Hufflepuff, Charmer is smitten with is?
For the reunion imagine the music being that from the 3rd Air Bud movie where Buddy is reunited with his own kidnapped offspring. I thought it would be fitting in this case.
For those of you on fanfiction I'm sure you've been facing the many unwanted ads when you're reading a story. Well, yesterday, I finally had enough, and I got an adblocker app. It worked! No more ads on any level! The one I got is Adblock Pro: Safari Ad Blocker. It really works. Just follow the instruction video that it attached to it.
Heads up everyone there's someone on fanfiction you need to seriously watch out for. Early a couple of months ago after I woke up I was checking my email and I saw I had a new guest review on my A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 2 sequel. I took a look at it and got a very big shock. Some random person I've never spoken to before on here or anywhere else in my life was basically threatening me. Intimidating and practically ordering me to write a threatening letter to someone on their behalf, telling to stay off of for life or else they and everyone else close to them would be killed, disgustingly telling them to kill themselves. And at the bottom of the message this crazy person wasn't done. Warning me that if I don't send the letter then they would kill me and for confirmation to email them to make absolutely sure I complied with their demands. Of course I did nothing of the sort. Instead of doing what they wanted I reported them to the website, sent copies of this deplorable guest review message to police officer cousins of mine so they could have it on file, and I went to a nearby police station and reported it.
When I spoke to the police officers and they checked everything on the message they saw, that while the address and names of business were accurate the people and their names were not. They agree it was more than likely a scam because of the email address on the bottom in order to perhaps get access to personal information or potentially hack my computer. Despite that I'm still very happy they took it seriously as I showed and told them everything. All the same I'm still very happy that I brought this to the attention of law enforcement. Even though the entire thing might be fake I'm still very happy to have brought this to the attention of those who can do something about it if it was legit in some way. This may have been a scam, but it's obvious these people are beyond irresponsible if they try to goad people into sending death threats to random strangers just to get access to info.
Be that as it may if this does unfortunately happen to you do not send any messages to the email addresses they put down and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you bring the message to the authorities immediately whether it is legit or not.
Because it's a guest review it might not be visible for a couple of days as it loads if it is sent to you. But when it does you should definitely pressing the report abuse button and send it to the email that leads to the support staff that is available.
Just a heads up to those of you who aren't aware of this yet, Email alerts for this website are now only active if Email opts is enabled in account settings.
I hope you all like this one! I certainly did while writing it for your vast enjoyment! ;D
For those of you just starting out with my stuff there are other works on my profile that may catch your interest. I highly recommend you take a look as soon as the opportunity presents itself to you. Who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover.
Stay safe everyone. Especially with all of these crazy natural disasters occurring a lot lately due to global warming and climate change everywhere for sure. I swear it's like they're getting worse and worse all the time and it's like officials are simply just ignoring it or pretending it doesn't exist entirely just to go on with their daily lives. Especially those in multi-million dollar companies that rely on certain elements of our planet that we rely on to naturally keep us safe instead of adapting and finding new safer ways to keep in business. There are so many options out there where they can adapt, but they just refuse to see it because all they care about is money. Climate change is altering so much faster than anyone can really keep track of.
So, in light of all this, it is important to live life to the fullest as much as anyone can.
I know I am. ;) See you guys next time.
