Embry

"What the hell do you mean you can't tell her? All imprints are allowed to know!" Rosalie screamed.

As I expected, she wasn't taking the news of our plan very well. The entire family sat together in the dining room with me while we discussed the meeting I'd come from and what Billy decided. Leah was Rosalie's very best friend and the only human she'd ever taken an interest in. Our whole family adored her, except for my brother's girlfriend.

I hoped Edward's relationship with Bella would be temporary. Jake had been crazy about her since we were kids, and she didn't know what my family was so I knew my brother wasn't very serious about her.

"Rosie, calm down." Emmett pulled her in to his lap. "We'll save LeeLee, don't worry."

"It is bullshit, though." Jasper agreed.

Jasper didn't like the treaty between our family and the tribe. He hadn't been a part of the family when it was signed. He thought Carlisle had given them way too much control, but it wasn't something that could be changed now. Sam and the council would never agree.

Carlisle placed his hand on my arm. "Don't worry, Embry. We will get through to her."

"Haven't you tried before?" I asked.

Rosalie shook her head. "Not really, no. She still thinks I'm the only one that knows. Emmett called him a dick, and she thinks Seth is on to them, but she doesn't realize how obvious it is."

"Maybe we need to talk to her as a family." Esme suggested.

Alice raised her hand and closed her eyes. She could see the outcome of the decision.

"No, it won't work. She'll get overwhelmed and deny everything." She confirmed.

"Sounds about right." Emmett scoffed.

Alice couldn't see most of the pack in her visions, but she could see me. She said it was because she was so in tune with me before I'd phased.

"What if I tell her about the imprint?" I suggested.

Alice closed her eyes again. "Also no. She won't believe you. She'll say Rosalie and Emmett put you up to it to get her away from Sam."

I slammed my fist down against the table in frustration. "What the hell am I supposed to do, then? I can't let Sam keep hurting her."

I felt Jasper relaxing me and slouched back in my chair.

"Relax, baby brother." Emmett said.

"I'm technically older than you." I reminded him.

He'd only been 20 when he was turned. He ignored my comment and kept talking. "Me and Rosie have already been pushing her toward you. We'll just double our efforts."

Rosalie smiled deviously. "We can start with the gala. I told her you'd be riding with us, but we'll tell her the day of that Carlisle has a flat tire and needs to ride with me and Emmett. She will have to ride with you."

"That will work." Alice confirmed. "She'll call me first, and I'll tell her that Edward and Bella are riding with me and Jaz. She'll agree to ride with you to stay away from Bella."

I thanked the spirits for my brother's very irritating girlfriend for a moment. I'd enlist the help of satan himself if it meant Leah would be safe sooner.

I nodded. "It's a start at least."

"Why don't you stay here tonight?" Esme asked. "You can ride to work with your sister in the morning."

I agreed and trekked up to my room. I wouldn't have been able to sleep ordinarily, but there were few things Jasper's gift couldn't accomplish. I knew he would sit outside my door all night to keep me asleep, and I'd normally object, but right now I didn't care. I needed to rest and stay on top of my game if I was going to save Leah.

Jasper woke me the next morning and dropped me off at my house. Rosalie didn't want to take a chance on Leah seeing us together and questioning anything. It made sense, but I still grumbled about getting up early. The breakfast Esme had prepared me had helped to improve my mood.

I spent the next few days in agony while I avoided Leah. On the rare occasion that we did speak, I pushed her toward my family. I knew they'd at least keep her safe when she was with them.

The guys in my pack had taken the news that I was a Cullen much better than I'd expected. They still didn't like them, but they didn't talk about them in front of me anymore. It made things easier between us.

Seth hadn't made much progress in getting evidence to use against Sam, but I hadn't expected it to be a very quick process.

Staying busy helped me to keep my mind off things. Carlisle had started training me in the ER, but I stayed in the clinic, too. I tried to work the same schedule as Leah as much as I could. When I wasn't at the hospital, Jake kept me busy running patrols and training. The four of us knew a fight with Sam's pack would be inevitable, and we needed to be ready. My brothers helped me train too, even though we couldn't enlist their help in an actual fight with Sam.

Things were going as well as I could've expected until I met Jasper at the doors of the clinic one morning. Rosalie walked in at the same time as I did and she groaned.

"This can't be good."

Jasper raised his hands at us in surrender. "Don't shoot the messenger. Alice sent me, said you'd both need me to keep you calm."

That could only mean one thing; something was wrong with Leah. I took a few deep breaths to try to calm myself down and keep from phasing right there. Jasper's gift could only do so much for me when it came to her.

Rosalie unlocked the doors and Jasper followed us inside. Nobody said anything to my siblings when they came into restricted areas since our father was the largest donor for the hospital and one of the top rated trauma surgeons in the country.

I could feel it when Leah walked in. She was wearing a thick cardigan with baggy sleeves over her scrub top and she was using one hand to hold her other arm up. She was wearing her purse on the shoulder of the uninjured arm, opposite than how she wore it normally.

"Good morning." She groaned as she walked in and sat her bag down carefully. "I need to see Carlisle, is he here yet?"

I shook my head. "I'm covering for him in the ER this morning. Is there something I can help with, Leah?"

She looked nervously back and forth from me to Rosalie for a moment before nodding.

"I hate to trouble you, Embry, but I fell last night and hurt my wrist. I was going to ask Carlisle to do an x-ray and wrap it for me."

Alice was right to send Jasper because I wouldn't have been able to keep my composure otherwise. Rosalie removed her cardigan and I gritted my teeth when I saw her wrist swollen and bruised. She hadn't fallen. I could make out the silhouette of each of Sam's fingers from the dark bruises.

Rosalie scoffed. "Did you fall into someone's grip, Lee? I'm not fucking stupid, I can make out the shape of each finger. Did he do this to you?"

Leah pulled her arm back quickly. "Damn it, Rosalie, I'm not lying. I must have just gripped it too hard when I put pressure on it afterwards."

"Your fingers are smaller than those bruises." Jasper told her. "And you'd know better than to put pressure on a break, and it's the opposite hand. We aren't going to say or do anything if you don't want us to, but you can at least tell us the truth."

"I am telling the truth." Leah insisted. Rosalie continued to glare at her friend and her face fell. "Okay, I lied, but I did fall. Sam must have just used too much pressure when he picked me up."

Her story still didn't make sense and I hated that she was lying to cover for him. I could smell him all over her, not just her wrist. They had slept together the night before. I didn't know why I hadn't expected them to, since they were married, but the realization was a lot for me to take in. I couldn't understand what kind of sick bastard could have sex with someone and also inflict this kind of physical pain on them. I was sure it was only to manipulate her into lying to cover what he'd done. He had his hooks in her so deep that I didn't know if I'd ever be able to get them out.

Rosalie shook her head. "You better come up with a better lie for my father and Seth. I'm radiology certified, I'll take care of the X-ray and the wrapping. Will you sign off on it, Em?"

I wanted to be the one to help her, but I knew right now Rosalie would be more likely to get through to her than I would. I nodded reluctantly.

"Just let me know when the chart is ready."

I left the clinic and went directly to Carlisle's office. He was here, but I had still agreed to cover his shift in the ER this morning. He was preparing his speech for the gala and needed some time to prep without Edward around.

He didn't say anything when I walked in and shut the door. I pulled out my phone and started a group call with Seth, Jacob, and Quil. They all answered fairly quickly. Carlisle's office was soundproofed, just in case any of my siblings ever needed to talk to him.

"The son of a bitch broke her wrist." I said as they all answered my call. Carlisle shut his laptop and turned his attention toward me.

"Don't do anything stupid, Em." Jake growled.

Seth was pissed. "Make sure it's all documented properly."

"I can't." I told him. "She said she fell and he must have gripped her wrist too hard when he helped her up."

"How do you know that's not what happened?" Quil asked. "I mean, aside from us knowing what we know."

"You can make out where each of his fingers were." I explained. "Don't worry, though. I could smell the bastard's seed on her so at least he made it up to her."

Quil growled loudly. "Bold of you to assume she consented. Do you honestly think Sam Uley is above sexual assault?"

I didn't think he was above doing anything to hurt her, but knowing Rosalie's background I knew Leah would've admitted it if he'd done something like that. She loved him. She probably welcomed any affection he offered.

Seth shook his head. "I'll go visit her tonight. Tell Rosalie to take pictures of it that show his fingerprints. She's never been good at lying to me."

"Pack meeting when you're both off work at my place." Jake said.

We all hung up and Carlisle was glaring at me.

"Do you realize what you've just done, son?" He demanded. "You violated HIPAA. I will sign off on the chart so you aren't listed as her doctor, but don't slip up like that again."

I hadn't thought about it in the moment. "Carlisle, I'm.."

"Stop, Embry. I'm not mad. But, if you plan to use this incident to sway the council we have to make sure Sam can't use it as ammunition against you. I won't let him have your license revoked." He explained.

My father was a very fair man, but he was stern and followed the rules. I had been so laser focused on what happened to Leah that I looked past my responsibility as her physician to protect her privacy.

I left his office without another word and busied myself in the ER. It was a busy day for us, which was unusual. Quil had gotten in my head, so I found a minute to text Edward.

Need you to find out if Sam forced himself on Leah last night. He broke her wrist.

Edward replied instantly.

He didn't. I came to see Rosalie for lunch. Leah ate with us. It was consensual. Seth had asked me to come by and get some pictures. Leah didn't notice a thing. Rosalie is wrapping her wrist now.

I breathed a sigh of relief, which was odd given the circumstances. I wasn't glad Leah and Sam slept together, but I was grateful he hadn't forced her. I didn't text Edward back, but I did make it a point to stop by the clinic a few more times that day to check in on her.

At the end of my long shift, my sister was leaning against my car waiting for me. It was a bold move, though Rosalie was a bold person.

"What's the plan?" She demanded. "I know you've discussed this with the pack by now."

I groaned, because I knew she'd take it horribly. "Not much we can do, sis. Seth is going to go talk to her and see what he can get out of her. We're having a meeting soon."

She grinned. "Oh, good. Tell them the venue has changed. You'll have your pack meeting at our family home."

She strolled away slowly at first and then at an inhuman speed, disappearing into the woods.

I sent a quick text to the guys and they surprisingly agreed. My next message was to Esme to let her know we'd have guests. I wouldn't ever impose on my family without proper notice, even if it was my sister's idea.

An hour later, my family sat together on our porch waiting for the pack to arrive. I was surprised to see they'd driven over, but it made more sense when Jake helped Billy out of his truck.

"Chief Black," Carlisle greeted him. "Always a pleasure to see you, even if it's under these unfortunate circumstances."

Billy nodded at him. "Let's get this over with. Your family has an interest in Leah?"

Rosalie stood from her seat next to Emmett and walked over to Billy.

"I've never befriended a human before. I've always stayed away from them. Never drank their blood, always kept my distance." She choked up for a minute, and I knew if she was human she'd be crying. "Leah is special, Billy. She's the best friend I've ever had. I've watched her suffer from Sam's abuse for years, and I haven't been able to help her. Now, my brother has an opportunity I wish we'd had a long time ago. I'm begging you to help us."

Billy remained stoic in the face of the most emotion anyone in our family had ever seen from Rosalie. "Do you have proof of your allegations, Rosalie? Anything I can use to prove to the other council members that Sam Uley is abusing his wife?"

Rosalie grabbed her bag from the seat she'd had next to Emmett and handed it to him. "Of course I do."

We spent the next several hours going over everything Rosalie had. Seth was struggling between managing his professional responsibility as a cop, his feelings toward his sister, and his duty as a member of the tribe. I wasn't envious of his conflict. I had no such issue. My concern was Leah, and only Leah, always.

My stomach churned as we went through page after page of screenshots of messages between the two of them detailing Sam's abuse. There were even screenshots of messages between Sam and Leah, which were much worse than I could've imagined. She had medical records, too. Injuries Sam had inflicted over the years. Concussions, fractures, even today's broken wrist were included.

"How'd you get these, Rose?" Seth asked. "Leah give them to you?"

Rosalie nodded. "I'd never steal medical records, Seth. Leah has worried on many occasions that Sam's behavior would escalate. She wanted to make sure there was a paper trail in case anything happened to her. Every time I feel like I'm about to get through to her, they have one good night together and all of that progress goes away."

Rosalie disappeared in the house and came out a moment later with a folder in her hand. She slapped it down on the table. Seth opened it and laid it back down.

"What the hell is this?" He yelled. "Why are you showing me this? You think I'm not doing enough to protect her, huh?" He shoved Rosalie and Emmett quickly moved between them.

I grabbed the folder and opened it. The title was bold on the top of the paper.

Last Will and Testament of Leah Clearwater

I understood Seth's outburst. This was too much. Leah thought she may die, but she wouldn't leave? What could be done if she didn't want to help herself?

"Rosalie, explain this." I pleaded.

Edward interrupted. "Our lawyer prepared it for Leah after the concussion incident. She wanted to make sure that if something happened to her Sam wouldn't have control of the arrangements." His face twisted in agony. "We were so close that time. Rosalie had her talked into leaving, until Sam apologized. It wasn't long before he hurt her again."

I couldn't take much more. Billy finally spoke again.

"I can't use this to call Harry. He's not going to trust evidence coming from any of you. I can't change the treaty, either. I can't let you get closer to her, even if it is to protect her." He sighed loudly. "But I am open to any other ideas that you have."

Esme spoke in a small voice. "I have the perfect idea." Everyone turned to her. "Bella is the key here. She can come to the reservation. She can make observations about the way Sam treats Leah. She can even befriend Emily. Bella is the perfect person for this job."

"One problem with that; Leah and Bella don't like each other." Alice reminded us.

Esme smiled. "Or maybe they haven't been in the proper mood when they've interacted?"

Jasper grinned darkly. "Sounds like the gala will be the perfect time for Leah to make a new friend."
