Note: An add-on scene before Boyd visits Grace in hospital. What Eve might have told Boyd when he finds out the reason why Grace hasn't been returning his phone calls. Series 8 Episode 'Endgame'.
Those three words
Grace has cancer
Three words that hit him like a brick wall. Even the look on Eve's face when he turns around after she's called his name and even before she told him the news, informs him something was wrong.
A slight concern had been at the back of his mind every day this week. Especially since every time he tried to call Grace it went straight to voicemail. It wasn't like Grace to not answer after the first few rings, and even if she didn't manage to pick up, she'd at least call back. It wasn't like Grace to just not call. Now, Boyd knew why. The reason, however, was not the one he was expecting to hear.
"But, she told me she was in Copenhagen. She said she had a conference to attend." He whispered, not really directing it towards Eve.
"She didn't want you to worry." Eve replied, completely oblivious that he wasn't asking a question.
Boyd let out a slight scoff. "Didn't want me to worry?" Anger and guilt rushed over him. He felt angry towards Grace, towards himself. How could he have been so blind? So oblivious to the signs? The answer didn't come as a surprise. Of course he knew why. They had been caught up in a case. The reappearance of Linda Cummings had forced his focus towards her that he'd become so distracted.
"She told you though." Boyd spat, a little too harshly.
"I know. I recognised the signs so I told her she should go to her GP."
"And after that? You should have told me. She should have told me."
"She made me promise not to say anything. We'd just lost Stella and you were still trying to come to terms with Luke's death. She knew you weren't in the right place for something else."
"So she felt it was better to keep it to herself? I wasn't the only one who was struggling to deal with what happened to Stella. She was the one who was there when Stella got shot, when she died. And then she finds out that she's got this disease."
Eve shrugged her shoulders, unsure about how to respond to Boyd's statement. He had a point. They were all dealing with the aftermath of the Magdalene Convent case and for Grace to receive the news must of added another weight. But, this was Grace. Eve knew Grace wouldn't want the team worrying about her when they'd just lost Stella.
"Does Spence know?" Boyd inquired as more anger bubbled. He wouldn't be shocked if Spence knew and it was just him who'd been so stupid to ignore what was going on.
Eve wasn't sure if she should tell him, Boyd was already feeling guilty. Hesitantly, Eve confirmed what Boyd knew with a slight nod.
Typical. Boyd thought. Trust me to be the only one. As usual I'm the last one.
"You should go see her." Eve said.
