DESC: Nile forces Kyoya to see a scary movie with him, so Kyoya has to find his own way to enjoy himself.

Oneshot for the Mayblade 2022 prompt list.

Scary movies never bothered Kyoya. In fact, they bored him. He had faced plenty of horrific situations in his own life, so he found the premises of most 'horror' movies completely ridiculous. Living in a haunted house? Just move out. Being chased by a killer? Gun him down (most of these movies took place in America, didn't they?). He couldn't help but laugh at all of the completely nonsensical decisions the protagonists made, all for the sake of furthering the plot. "Yeah, we should split up," said the person who was next on the chopping block. In short, they were predictable, boring, and needlessly complicated for their own good.

Kyoya didn't understand how anyone could enjoy that mindless dribble, until he remembered that mindless dribble was everyone he knew's bread and butter. Granted, it wasn't all of them; Madoka hated the unnecessary gore; and try as he might to deny it, Benkei was just as scared of them as a dog was of thunder. That wasn't even mentioning the fact that half of the people they hung out with weren't even old enough to see these movies in theatre.

When the offer to see one of these garbage movies with some of them came up, Kyoya was unenthusiastic, to say the least. It would've been an easy invitation to deny… if it weren't for his boyfriend, Nile.

Nile wasn't usually the outgoing type. When he wasn't battling, he liked to be on his own (or with Kyoya) in a quiet spot where he could just relax and destress. However, on this particular visit to Japan, he was actually pretty interested in trying new things. This wouldn't have been such a bad thing, but since Nile was an introvert and hated talking to people, Kyoya had to be dragged along on each new adventure he wanted to go on. It was honestly exhausting- not just for Kyoya, but for Nile himself. Every night, when they got back to the hotel they were staying at (because there was just no way in hell Kyoya's parents would let a boy stay in their house), Nile's head hit the pillow and he was out cold. As annoying as it was to Kyoya, it was also kind of entertaining.

So, when Gingka and Masamune approached the couple with their offer while they were out and about, Kyoya prepared to shoot them down, only for Nile to say "Sure, why not," with a shrug.

The others didn't seem to notice Kyoya rolling his eyes, they just started to argue about who was the bigger coward. "You won't even last the whole movie!" Masamune accused with confidence.

"Oh yeah? Well, I bet you won't even last through the first five minutes!" Gingka yelled back.

They squabbled back and forth for a little while longer before Kyoya finally snapped and barked at them to piss off. Once they had scampered away, Kyoya turned to look at Nile with dead eyes.

Nile looked back at him innocently. "What?"

"Why are you doing this to me?"

A devious smile crept onto Nile's face. "I don't know what you mean. I just want to go see a movie, that's all."

"That's all? Oh please, you've been dragging me along to every event in Japan!"

Nile grabbed his hand and weaved their fingers together. "You don't have to come with me if it'd make you so miserable," he said with a fake pout.

"Oh yeah? You gonna go hang out with Gingka and the others on your own?"

Nile stopped and thought for a moment. No matter how much he was enjoying going out and trying new things, Gingka and his friends were still… a lot to handle. "I can hang out with Benkei."

"Benkei will not go to a scary movie with you."

Nile leaned his head on Kyoya's shoulder and let out a loud, dramatic sigh. "Fine, I guess I'll just be on my own, then."

Kyoya looked down at him out of the corner of his eye. Nile stared back up at him with the biggest puppy dog eyes he could muster. Though he didn't want to cave, the longer he looked down at Nile's dramatic expression, the harder it was to keep himself from smiling. It was only when Nile deliberately blinked at him did a smile finally pull at his lips. "I hate you."

Nile grinned and put his hand on Kyoya's cheek, pulling his face out so that he could place a kiss right next to Kyoya's lips.

Kyoya mumbled against his cheek, "Seriously, I hate you." Though the feeling in his chest when he heard Nile chuckle told him otherwise.

Kyoya and Nile arrived at the movie theatre after dinner, when the sky was just starting to get dark. They met up with Gingka and Masamune, still arguing about who was going to get more scared, and a very annoyed-looking Hikaru, who was apparently a 'horror movie connoisseur.' According to her, the movie they were watching tonight was some American movie that had incredibly mixed reviews when it released there. So if they couldn't get scared, at least they could laugh at how bad the quality was.

They walked into the half-full theatre after purchasing an egregious number of snacks and found their seats in the centre of the room. Kyoya and Nile's seats were behind the other three's, something that definitely wasn't planned by the conniving teens that snickered whenever they saw Kyoya so much as hold Nile's hand.

As they watched the commercials play, Nile happily dug into Kyoya's caramel popcorn. "You know," he muttered between mouthfuls, "I've never seen a scary movie before. Are they actually scary?"

"Not unless you're an idiot," Kyoya scoffed, gesturing to two of the three loudmouths in front of them.

Nile softly hit Kyoya on the shoulder as he tried to suppress his laughter. "So you'll think I'm an idiot if I get scared?"

"You won't, trust me. All these movies are just the same old tropes in different settings, relying on sudden loud noises to freak you out."

"You seem awfully confident in that stance." He looked down at Hikaru, who was scolding the boys for trying to take her snacks. "Why don't you go tell her how you feel?"

"Now that would be an actual scary situation," Kyoya chuckled.

The lights went down and the room fell into a knowing hush. The screen was black, and an ominous drone started building up on the surrounding speakers. Kyoya relaxed back into his seat, ready to either laugh his ass off or be bored out of his mind for the next two hours. He was about to cross his arms when he felt Nile's hand move next to his own, softly linking their fingers together. Kyoya looked over at him, his eyes fixated on the screen with curious wonder. He took this opportunity to steal his caramel popcorn back from Nile's lap. Sure, he'd let Nile have a little bit of his food, but if a boyfriend was supposed to let his partner eat however much they wanted, then Kyoya was no one's boyfriend.

The movie opened with a dark, stormy night, and almost immediately, Kyoya tapped out. It was hard for any movie to keep his attention, given the life he had led, so at least he didn't have high expectations that were being dashed.

Kyoya was so bored with the movie that he couldn't stand to make himself pay attention to it. Instead, he found himself focusing on the people around him and their reactions. He grinned whenever he heard Hikaru huff in frustration or try to complain about the movie to Gingka, who was subtly trying to hide behind his popcorn to block the screen. At first, Masamune scoffed loudly at all of the scary parts, earning himself angry hushes from everyone around him. But as the movie went on, he grew quieter, having to cover his mouth to keep from screaming whenever there was a loud noise. It wasn't the entertainment that Kyoya signed up for, but he sure was glad that he had it.

Another thing he'd noticed that he couldn't help but smile at, was Nile's hand tightening its grip on his own at every jump scare. He glanced at him every time it happened to see if there was any other reaction, but his face remained stone cold, looking almost as bored as Kyoya himself. Perhaps he was just being startled by the loud noises. Or perhaps…

A devious idea popped into Kyoya's mind. Little by little, he moved closer to Nile, until their bodies were pressed together over the armrest. He then let go of Nile's hand and slowly wrapped his arm around his torso. Nile leaned into the embrace naturally, not taking his attention away from the screen- exactly what Kyoya wanted. He finally started paying attention to the movie, waiting for the perfect moment.

The climax of the movie was tense. It took place in a dark basement (or some kind of underground facility? Kyoya couldn't tell) and there was minimal noise, save for a constant dripping noise that would drive anyone crazy. Kyoya could feel that Nile was tense, and his heart was beating faster. His face was still neutral, but Kyoya knew the truth.

A perfect moment arose when an intense build-up drone started playing as the main character was about to turn a corner. Excitement bubbled inside Kyoya's chest as he waited for just the right moment, hands at the ready at Nile's sides. And then…

His hands jabbed into Nile's sides as a loud bang played through the speakers. Nile shrieked and nearly jumped out of his seat, causing many of the people around them, including their three friends in front of them, to give him strange and annoyed looks. Nile covered his mouth and turned to look at Kyoya, his wide eyes twitching in fury. Kyoya had to cover his own mouth to stop a mountain of laughter from bubbling to the surface.

Nile leaned back onto Kyoya's shoulder and whispered in his ear, "I am going to destroy you."

Kyoya now had to use both hands to muffle his insane cackling, lest he get thrown out of the theatre. Not that he would mind now, since he had successfully gotten the entertainment he wanted.

Nile scowled at him, clearly trying to hide his own smile. "Seriously, you are the bane of my existence," he muttered, his voice starting to break as he tried not to laugh.

Kyoya buried his face in Nile's shoulder as tears started to run down his cheeks. He held onto Nile for dear life as he tried to silence himself by hiding his face in Nile's scarf, only to break out into a full cackle when he heard Nile start to snicker. Nile pushed Kyoya off of him and stood up. He then took Kyoya's hand and dragged him out of the theatre before they could be chased out by security or an angry mob.

When they stumbled out to the lobby, Nile shoved Kyoya in the chest. "What is wrong with you?" he laughed, failing to sound as angry as he probably wanted to be.

Kyoya managed to pull himself together long enough to respond. "What? We came here to be entertained, and I am now severely entertained."

"Oh, you are the worst!"

"Hey, you wanted me to come with you," Kyoya jeered. He wrapped his arms around Nile's waist and pulled him close. "I could've stayed at the hotel while you enjoyed your godawful movie. Would you have preferred that?"

"It wasn't a bad movie," Nile corrected, putting his hands on Kyoya's chest. "It was even kind of scary, which I would've enjoyed if it wasn't for someone."

Kyoya grinned. "Oh, so you're an idiot, then?"

"I hate you." Though the kiss on Kyoya's neck told him otherwise.
