hi guys,
this is a fic centring on an OC, and there will be no pairings.
Disclaimer: Percy Jackson and the related characters of Riordanverse belong to Rick Riordan, I am just using his characters to write a fanfic of my creation. Only the plot is mine, nothing else.
I opened my eyes slowly, and a beam of light greeted my vision.
Was I still on the monster ship?
Fear grasped me and I got up quickly. It turned out to be a bad decision, considering the striking pain that ran through my body. I tried ignoring it though and looked around myself.
Where the hell am I?
The place looked clean and well-organized. Various posters of anatomical diagrams and medical instructions adorned the walls. On one side of me lay a small bedside table and on the other side a row of white beds.
It definitely looked nothing like the monster-infested ship, that was for sure. And I doubt the monsters would have laid me on a soft, cotton bed and proceeded to tuck me in.
Looking down at the sheets, I couldn't help but wince. My upper torso was naked and covered with bandaids all over.
I inhaled, attempting to stretch my body. I was in desperate need of some food. My mouth tasted sweet but I wasn't able to remember if I had eaten anything except the sea salt. Right now, the best thing to do was look around and count my chances of survival.
Just as I was able to rest my body against the headboard, a person came into view.
Her eyes widened in shock.
The stranger had tousled blonde hair, hastily tied back in a ponytail, and her icy grey eyes seemed to pierce my very soul. Her sun-kissed skin hinted at hours spent outdoors, and she sported a vibrant orange T-shirt adorned with the letters 'CHB,'.
CHB... aha so I had an inkling of where I was.
Her face turned a shade of pink as our eyes met… oh god.
"You need to you need to wear some clothes, your old ones are there," she pointed towards a wooden table where I saw my shirt, well a ragged, torn, bloodied rag. Beside it, a bright orange t-shirt lay, folded neatly.
She cleared her throat, "And you need to drink this, I am sure it will help." She laid a glass of yellow liquid (wot), on the bedside table.
It seemed suspicious but nonetheless, I picked up the glass and gave it a sniff. My eyes widened and I immediately kept the glass aside. I turned to the girl, who looked confused.
"Where am...I? I croaked out. Oh gods, it pained to speak.
"Camp half-blood, it's a camp for half-bloods such as you, we are-" but I paid no attention to her after that, all I needed to know was where I was.
Camp half-blood, so I was correct about the CHB shirt. Camp Half-blood was a camp made to train the children of gods and mortals so that they could actually survive in the real world. My breath hitched, ''This was where she had wanted them to go to'... I wish she was here, next to me, smiling.
There's no use thinking about her. She was probably dead now.
Whatever.
Trying to distract myself, I looked at the liquid again… ah It was nectar then. I gulped it down in one go letting the warmth envelop my body. The juice energised every living cell in my body. I felt a thousand times better already.
"What did it taste like?" I heard the girl ask as I kept the glass down again before removing the covers and moving out. My feet felt stiff and it pained me to walk, but it was nothing I hadn't faced before.
"Tasteless," I answered. It actually tasted like honey though. The fresh honey from what was once my home. Still, it was none of her concern, and she didn't press the matter further and remained silent. I proceeded to the basin, quickly freshening up. And then donned the orange T-shirt, discarding my previous clothes in the bin.
I turned towards the girl whose cheeks were still tinged with pink and cleared my throat.
God, she was annoying, blushing girls were always such a hindrance.
"Where can I meet the camp's director?" The director, I figured, would be able to give me some useful input. After all, he was an olympian.
She ushered me to follow her.
And the moment my gaze laid upon the place, I stilled. I haven't really been amazed a lot in my life, but looking around I was quite stunned. Fields stretched out before us. Lush green strawberry plants were adorned with ripe, red berries sprawled along neat rows. To the side, grapefruit trees stood tall, their branches heavy with the citrus fruit. Further along, apple trees stood proudly. The sweet scent of strawberries, grapefruits, and apples filled the air.
"I'm Annabeth Chase, what's your name?" The girl asked, interrupting my train of thought.
"Icarus," I replied, my focus shifting from the fields to the surroundings, searching for anything out of place. Soon we reached a very big building that had a porch with tables and chairs.
"This is the big house, Mr. D, our camp director will be inside right now."
In the main room, we encountered a rather portly man dressed in a leopard-pattern Hawaiian shirt and Bermudas. His demeanour immediately struck me as unconventional for a camp director. Clutching a can of Coke in one hand and flipping through a wine magazine with the other, he appeared entirely unfazed by our arrival.
As we approached, he slowly raised his gaze, fixing his bloodshot eyes on me. It was evident from the moment you laid eyes on him that he was no ordinary mortal. His eyes bore an unusual shade of blue, and beneath the lighting, his hair seemed to take on a purplish hue. His aura left me with a sense of uncertainty and fear.
"Mr. D, this is Icarus, the guy we found two days ago on the Long Island coast." Annabeth introduced and he hummed in reply.
"Guess I will have to repeat it again, Welcome to camp half blood. Don't expect me to pity and cry my heart out for brats like you." the pudgy guy grumbled and waved his hands trying to shoo me away.
"As you say, Lord Dionysus," I bowed.
Annabeth did a double take and Mr. D raised an eyebrow. God this was fun. Annoying teenagers were always fun to fool
"Guess you maybe aren't as stupid as you look, brat. What gave it away?"
I shrugged, "You radiate power, from the moment I first stepped in I could feel it. And well this camp is a place for the children of gods. So it kind of was obvious that you're a god. All that and the fact that your name is Mr. D, so I figured, you're Lord Dionysius."
The corner of my lips threatened to turn up into a smirk after seeing Annabeth's speechless face. Dionysius remained unbothered. By the looks of it, Annabeth wasn't going to be able to figure out that I was lying my ass off. Well... I did know he was an Olympian yes… but that was because a couple of Dracaena told me. I had no intention of disclosing this to anyone. Even though he was a god, he definitely wouldn't compel me to reveal my sources, despite his ability to read minds.
Nonetheless, Mr. D bobbed his head before turning towards Annabeth, "Then we needn't show him the orientation film. Take him to cabin eleven and contact Chiron for anything else." he said and went back to his wine magazine.
Annabeth nodded and was about to pull my hand but I turned and signaled for her to move ahead, and I followed her outside.
"How did you know that was Lord Dionysus? Wa-wait do you know who your godly parent is?" She interrogated me rapidly as we walked towards the archery range.
"Are you a child of Lady Athena?" I asked her and she blushed again before nodding proudly.
"How'd you know?"
"Besides the constant questions?"
Her face flushed a bright red again.
I continued, "Well your grey eyes, the blonde curls, and that piercing look that I have seen in all Athena spawns."
She frowned, "I'm gonna pass a blind eye towards that last comment, but where did you meet other children of Athena?"
I ignored her, I would rather not want her to know anything about me.
"You still haven't answered my questions, you know. How did you know he was lord Dionysus and do you know who your godparent is? Is it Athena?" She pressed again and I shrugged in reply.
How did I know about Lord Dionysius? Well, a couple of Dracaena, and I sure as hell am not telling that to this kid. And my godly parent? That I didn't know. I do have a few guesses, but that's it. Nothing solid, just guesses. And when you don't have any solid evidence, it's best to keep your mouth shut.
We reached the archery range in silence. A centaur was there teaching archery to some boy who looked a year younger than me. He was making remarks and trying to improve the boy's stance but the kid still couldn't figure it out. I could see where the boy was wrong, but the universal law of keeping your mouth shut when there's no need for it forbids me to provide any input.
"Chiron, meet Icarus, Icarus meet Chiron, our activities in charge." Annabeth said before looking towards the brown-bearded centaur again, "He's the new guy, Mr. D assigned him to cabin eleven. I just accompanied him to inform you."
Chiron offered me a welcoming smile. He was in his centaur form, and his foreboding figure would've scared me if I hadn't already known about him. Or if I hadn't met monsters much worse than a friendly aged centaur.
"Master Chiron." I murmured with a half bow making Chiron chuckle, "Oh you needn't call me that Icarus, I am happy being just Chiron."
"Now, I believe you have met Mr. D and have been given a general intro by Annabeth?" The centaur inquired.
"Yes Chiron, I just wanted to know my schedule here and where could I find cabin eleven?"
Chiron smiled softly, though his eyes seemed puzzled.
"You are taking all this quite well, Icarus."
I shrugged, I knew a couple of things already. Of course, I wasn't shocked.
His wisdom-filled eyes met mine as if trying to figure out what I was thinking before he laughed.
"How amusing, you're quite different from your namesake. A man- no a child of much exuberance and curiosity he was. Well Icarus, I certainly hope your fate is nothing like the Icarus I once knew."
"I'd prefer not to be compared to anyone else."
He smiled yet again, but this time it didn't reach his eyes.
"Ah well, Annabeth can tell you your schedule and the general camp rules which must be followed. I am sure she won't mind you showing the way to cabin 11," Chiron looked expectantly at Annabeth who gestured for me to follow her.
Along the way, Annabeth kept on prattling about when to wake up and do chores, who had to do what and what I was allowed and wasn't allowed to do. Apparently, I wasn't allowed to leave without Mr. D's or Chiron's express permission.
She then showed me a few locations like the dining hall which was actually not a hall, but rather an open-air pavilion.
The lakes where the crystal-clear waters reflected the surrounding trees and the blue sky above. Naiads inhabited the lake, and their presence could be felt in the gentle ripples on the water's surface. She also showed me the gardens and farmlands of the camp which were of course gorgeous, the swords arena and finally the cabins.
I also realised a couple of things while walking. It would seem there was something more irritating than hearing someone, cough Annabeth cough, prattle for hours. It's when all eyes are on you. Throughout the entire damn way, the people gawked, openly pointed at me, murmuring and whispering.
"Did you see him? It's rare to see an older demigod arrive. "
"Yeah, the one walking with Annabeth!"
"Is he the one? The one who caused all this?"
"Damn, he looks so cute."
"Yeah but he doesn't look very friendly, does he?"
This continued until a different voice called from behind.
"So he's the new punk? What's happening here now? Are there no good demigods left?"
Annabeth sighed in annoyance like this was a daily occurrence.
"Clarisse, why don't you go bully others? Let him take some fresh air, he's been up only for an hour now." Annabeth groaned to the Clarisse girl. The girl's face held a sneer as she looked at me with her piggy eyes in distaste.
"Shut up Princess, I'm a cabin in charge and it's my duty to welcome new punks, isn't it girls?" She asked the two girls behind her who snorted and nodded excitedly.
"So punk, what's your name?" The girl demanded as she came closer cracking her knuckles trying to look frightening. God how adorable. She really thought she could scare me. Well once you have seen hellhounds, dracaenae, minotaurs and more this kind of act really makes you coo and aww in delight.
"Hey, Clarisse, don't punch his face, he is kinda cute." One of the girls behind Clarisse laughed.
"Yeah Clarisse, be gentle! He looks like someone from the pinky-poohs." which erupted in another fit of laughter from them.
"Icarus," I told her.
"Oh is it? Such a cute little name for a cute boy like you."
"Well, it's time to have your punch of the day." She scowled before jabbing me.
Annabeth gasped and shielded her eyes, probably not wanting to see me thrown to the ground. But she was wrong.
I swiftly dodged the jab from Clarrise, pivoting in the opposite direction. Seizing an opportunity, I executed a low, precise kick aimed at her left shin. As she momentarily faltered, I grabbed a hold of my chance, slipping my arm beneath hers and firmly gripping her shoulder from the opposite side. With a powerful tug, I lifted her momentarily off her feet, and in a controlled motion, I released my hold, causing her to crash onto the grassy ground. Clarrise's groans of pain echoed in the aftermath of our confrontation.
I turned to Annabeth, her saucer-wide eyes fixed on me, then shifted my gaze to Clarisse, who was still groaning from the ground.
"Don't ever mess with me, Clarisse. You'll only regret it," I warned.
I turned and was about to walk away when I heard the sudden noise of footsteps.
Just in time, I reacted to the incoming punch from behind, deftly ducking and evading the surprise attack. I took a step back, creating some distance between us. In one fluid motion, I delivered a punch to the girl to my left, targeting her back. Her pained cry filled the air, and before she could retaliate, I immobilized her. With a firm grip on both her flailing arms, I applied a restraining lock, effectively halting the fight.
"Leave Angelica, you bastard!" Clarisse shouted, her face turning red with rage.
"I don't attack anyone, you know, I just defend myself from everyone. This better be my last warning Clarisse. No attacking, I won't tolerate it. I won't stop because you're a girl. For me, you are just an opponent. I will absolutely kick you out if need be. Remember, don't attack if you can't defend." I snarled and pushed the Angelica girl towards Clarisse.
"You're making the wrong enemies. You better watch your back." Clarisse screamed before carrying her fallen comrade and walking with a wince.
Annabeth had been surprised and hadn't stopped talking about how bad Clarisse La Rue was how I had indeed made some very bad enemies and that I needed to be more careful now especially since Clarisse was known to seek revenge. I just shrugged my shoulders and followed the Athena child inside Cabin Eleven.
Inside the cabin, it was utter chaos. Bed bunks were stacked against the walls, and each one of them was cluttered with junk. Clothes were haphazardly strewn across the bunks and hung on hooks, and then there were different weapons that the guys living in the cabin used.
As we entered everyone's attention snapped at us, Annabeth cleared her throat, "Guys, he's the new guy that washed up on our shore two days ago, his name's Icarus, he will be here as per Mr. D's orders." She announced before turning to me. "And Icarus, they're your cabin mates,"
"Determined or not?" Someone yelled and Annabeth shook her head, making them groan.
"What's happening man, two in two days?"
"Yeah man, can't believe there's already another one."
"As if we don't lack space already, I am pretty sure we'll have beds all over soon."
"Now-now, none of that," a voice called from behind, and I turned to see a blonde-haired boy who stood at 5'8" approaching us. His striking blue eyes and crooked smile gave him a charismatic appearance, but the white scar beneath his eyes added a rugged edge to his otherwise 'perfect kid' look.
He ruffled his hair, "We're the kids of the God of Travellers, and travellers always have an open heart for a friend. And it's not his fault he is undetermined, is it? They're gods, they take time. So, no more jeers."
He walked up to me offering me a warm smile and his hand laid in the air expectantly.
"Hey there, I am Luke, the cabin counsellor."
I stared at his hand, "Icarus."
Yeah, I was living here for now but that didn't mean I'll be friendly with everyone and anyone. And he took the hint anyway and drew his hand back.
"Err... yeah, so Icarus, you'll umm...sleep there," he pointed towards a bed in the corner, before moving towards it and sitting on it. Then he looked up expectantly toward me. Huh. Wait no he was looking towards Annabeth who was looking at me. I just quirked an eyebrow and saw her blush again.
"I-I guess, I will come back later then, Call me if you need something alright?" She stammered, hurrying her words, and after throwing one last glance at Luke she dashed off.
"So Icarus, how do you feel here?" Luke asked me, trying to be nice, and patted the place beside him, I chose to sit in front of another bed beside him. "I'm okay. I am yet to attend any classes."
"Yeah, you will enjoy those, The first few days are a bit hectic but after that, you'll enjoy it a whole lot."
I hummed in reply before changing the topic.
"Have you met Hermes?"
While I have met, talked to and fought off monsters meeting someone who has met god was definitely a whole new level. And well Chiron and Dionysus don't count.
"Yeah, once," Luke mumbled, his gaze fixed on the stone-framed window, clearly indicating his reluctance to discuss the topic. Though I, too, had no desire to engage in conversation at the moment.
"Anyways, have you got any idea who your godly parent might be?" Luke questioned breaking the awkward silence.
"Nope, how can I check it out?"
"Well, Icarus," he began, "we can't be entirely certain about your godly parent. We'll subject you to a series of tests to uncover your strengths and areas of skill, and then we can make a guess. The gods… tend to be quite preoccupied. They have a lot on their divine plates, often too busy for their own offspring." Luke's tone grew bitter as he continued, "You know, Icarus, there are a few campers who've been here for years without ever being claimed by their divine parent."
I was silent, unsure how to reply to that. Thankfully the conch horn bellowed out, helping me escape the conversation.
"Well, dinner time. You'll meet another one like you, he joined us yesterday and he's undetermined right now." Luke said grinning. I just stared at him.
He clapped his hands and commanded everyone to form a line outside.
As we made our way to the dining hall, I noticed other cabins forming lines and marching in the same direction. I followed suit, trudging alongside my cabin mates. We settled at the Hermes table, and it came as no surprise that we were the loudest group in the hall, given our size of around twenty-one members.
The weirdest thing to do was offer the best part of your meal to a god. The campers, especially the claimed ones, mostly did this to their parents, and those who weren't claimed offered it to whichever god they thought might be their parent. I followed the example of the new kid, Percy, and gave a portion of my steak to all the gods.
During dinner, I noticed that I had become the centre of attention for nearly everyone in the camp. Some were clearly evaluating my potential, like the campers from Athena and Hephaestus. Others seemed interested in making friends, including those from Aphrodite, Demeter, and Apollo. Of course, there were a few who showed hostility, primarily from the Ares cabin. And then there were campers who didn't seem particularly bothered by my presence, like Dionysus and Hermes. As dinner came to a close, a girl from the Aphrodite cabin approached and took a seat beside me as the campfire crackled to life.
"Hi! I am Drew, Drew Tanaka, what's your name?" the Asian girl smiled at me. She had striking black hair that cascaded down in perfect ringlets. She adorned herself with plenty of jewellery that glittered in the firelight, and her makeup was flawlessly applied.
"Get off him, Drew. You're hogging some intellectual space."Annabeth called out, her voice tinged with annoyance. She seemed quite agitated for some reason.
"Oh really? Then I'll move when I see some real intellect first," Drew fired back, clearly unimpressed.
Annabeth countered, "Don't you need eyes for that? Oh my, I though you were blind. Thats why you thought yourself to be beautiful in the first place." Although I wouldn't admit it, Annabeth's fake gasp was rather amusing.
"That's because I am beautiful, owl face. Icarus will decide it. Icarus I am beautiful, no?"
She batted her eyelashes at me. I raised an eyebrow. If she knew my name, what was the point in asking me? And secondly, why trap me into answering such a stupid question? So I did the intelligent thing and ignored the two of them completely.
"Ha! Take that Tanaka, he is not interested in you at all. Now move away, you are using my brain cells' oxygen." Annabeth was of course giddy.
If Drew wanted to say something, she didn't and instead with a last glance and an offer to show me around she moved off to the Aphrodite table.
Annabeth took a seat beside me, "So Icarus, enjoyed your time here?" I simply shrugged. What could possibly be enjoyable about this place?
"Tomorrow, we'll begin your training to see where your strengths lie. And, I'm thinking of having you on my capture-the-flag team. What do you think?" Annabeth asked, excitement lacing her voice.
I'm not interested in playing any games here." I noticed her initial frown as if she were ready to argue, but she eventually relaxed.
Annabeth explained to me, "It's a camp rule, though. Everyone has to take part in capture-the-flag. We form two teams by making alliances with cabins, and one of the cabins from each team commands. This time it's Athena versus Ares, and you have to be on my team. I highly doubt you want to be on a team with Ares Cabin."
Her tone held a touch of childishness, which was somewhat unexpected for someone from the Athena cabin. Ignoring her, I continued to gaze into the fire, contemplating the upcoming game.
"Alright." I said and moved towards the Hermes cabin to get some rest, "I will talk with Chiron on this."
