DM77's Psychonauts Chapter 6

Raine the Psychomaster

The Mine cart ride soon came to a stop and Nigel was ejected out of a new tree stump, he found himself in some underground base with lots of tech and holo screens. In the center was a machine that contained a purple meteorite but standing on the glass floor of it was a person Nigel reagonized. They were the ranger and janitor person he seen but now they were wearing a long, black tunic with a maroon collar, gold trim, three gold buttons, a brown belt, crimson pants and black, knee-high boots. On the tunic was the Psychonaut logo.

They turn and sees Nigel approach and they say "Hm, you finally made it I see."

"It's an honor to finally meet you in person." Nigel said in awe "I thought I reagonized you in my dream, but I couldn't be sure. Now that I see you in your element, there's no doubt. You're Raine Whispers. The greatest leader the Pyschonauts ever had. Ahhhhhh!" He lets out fanboying.

Raine chuckles and said "Well, you shouldn't believe everything you read in 'True Psychic Tales' magazine. But I have noticed you have been working hard out there."

"T-Thank you Raine." Nigel said.

"Well in honor of your hard work, dedication and mental agility, I bestow upon you the official merit badge for…Pyrokinesis." Raine said as they give him the badge.

Nigel smiles as the badge is placed onto his bag and he feels the fire within him which he then then mentally create with his mind.

"Cool! I can't way to burn…" Nigel began smiling but stopped looking around, they were back in the black void outside the gypsy caravan "Hey, what are we doing here?"

"What, you mean inside your mind? Well, I figured you'd like to be in a familiar place for your first Pyrokinesis lesson."

"Lesson?" Nigel said surprised

"Shh. Now, now think of something you'd like to burn." Raine told him. Nigel thinks and has the perfect idea as he made three circus tents appear. "Oh yes, I did hear you were raised in the circus. But why would you want to burn all these happy memories here?"

"If they were happy memories, I wouldn't have run away." Nigel told them. He explained "My dad, he hates psychics, and he knew I was becoming one. So, all day long he would force me to practice my acrobatics, hoping to distract me. Or maybe hoping to kill me. I never was sure."

"I see but why are you still talking when you could be burning stuff?" Raine asked the boy. Nigel nods understanding and focus his mind on the circus tents and one by one they each catch fire and burn. They then said "Nigel, lock your mental focus on this last one, and hold it while you use your Pyrokinesis power."

The thing that appeared was a little toy car that drives around. Nigel do as he is told and locks onto it with focuses on it. Once he felt he was at full power it catches fire.

"Excellent work!" Raine said smiling.

"You know, fire is pretty." Nigel said with a nod.

"Okay, that's the end of this lesson. You're free to go, BUT you have to promise me…Only to use the power of your Pyrokinesis only when it's very, very important, or it's really, really entertaining." Raine said with a chuckle.

"I promise." Nigel said saluting.

"And if you're doing it to impress girls or guys…Make sure none of them have on a lot of hairspray." Raine added with a chuckle.

We return to Raine's sanctuary and Nigel was free to ask any questions he had for the Pychomaster which he does. He asks "What are you doing here at Whispering Rock?"

"This training facility is built right smack on top of the largest Psitanium deposit known to man." Raine said pointing to the meteorite right below them. "It runs under this whole valley and makes this a very critical area for the Psychonauts, so I'm here to look after it. And to make sure you little spoonbenders don't kill each other."

"I see…what's Psitanium?" Nigel asked confused.

"Psitanium is a very rare, psychoreactive mineral that crashed here on a meteorite hundreds of years ago." Raine explained "It responds to psychic waves. Focuses them, amplifies them. It can make psychics more psychic, but it can also make unstable people more unstable. Not everyone can handle that much activity in that part of their brain. It can drive them completely out of their mind. It does give this valley an interesting history."

"Understandable" Nigel said nodding, now he wanted to ask what was on his mind "I saw you raking leaves. Was that a disguise?"

"Er, yes. Well, well, I have many disguises." Raine said though a bit uncomfortable "It helps me keep an eye on you kids wherever you go. Heh heh." They clear their throat "Now, when I'm in disguise, I may pretend not to recognize you. Don't blow my cover, okay?"

"Say no more. Your secret identity is safe with me." Nigel said saluting. "So what mission are you on down here?"

"Well, form here I can monitor world events, look for signs of psychic terrorism, ripples in the astral plane…" Raine said smiling.

"And then fly out and save the day, right?" Nigel said in awe "You've got a jet hidden here somewhere, I'll bet."

"Well, these days I'm really just more of a dispatcher. I spot the trouble and send out a…younger agent. Like Felicia or Wiz…. or perhaps you some day." Raine explained smiling.

"What does all this equipment do?" Nigel asked the Psychomaster.

"Well, up here is all intel." Raine said giving the tour, they point to a hallway opposite the bridge Nigel came from "Down that hallway is the observation room. No tests going on in there right now, maybe later. Below us is some tech that is in need of repair so you shouldn't bother with heading down."

That was all the questions Nigel had, now to get to the reason he came here. He said to Raine "Wiz says I need to learn how to fight better."

"He wants to teach you advanced combat? On your first day?" Raine said surprised at that.

"Yeah. I had a vision with a huge monster with glowing eyes and a big mouth full of gnashing teeth…." Nigel explained.

"Did it happen to…spit anything at you?" Raine asked curious.

"Yeah. I think it was an old diving helmet or something like that." Nigel said nodding.

"I see. Hmm. Yes, well we'd better get your armed." Raine said going to a nearby table, gets a form out and fills it out.

"Why? What's happening?" Nigel asked concerned.

"Nothing, nothing. 'Prepare Your Mind.' That's the motto of the Psychonauts. Here." Raine said handing the paper to Nigel who takes it "This is a Markmanship Learner's Permit. It will only work when you're in Wiz's mind. Once you complete his shooting range, you'll get the real merit badge and you can PSI Blast anywhere you want."

"Thanks. PSI Blast?" Nigel said as he puts the permit away.

"Oh, you'll find out." Raine said with a nod "Now get going. We can't have the camp overrun with bug-eyed, garbage-spitting monsters, can we?"

"No sir!" Nigel said and added "I best go then, lots of work to do."

"Good luck, Nigel!" Raine said smiling.

"Thanks. I will need it!" Nigel said smiling.

"Don't worry. I'll be right here with you. Inside your head!" Raine said with a smile that surprised the boy.

"My head?" Nigel asked, confused.

"Indeed, I want to keep and eye on you. So I'm going to be a psychic stowaway inside your noggin!" Raine explained "If you ever want to make me appear, you can do it with this special device." They hand it to Nigel.

Nigel looks at it confused as it was a strip of bacon and he said "Is that…a piece of bacon?"

"Not just any piece of bacon, a piece of spicy bacon made right at the Mothorlobe." Raine said in awe "I just love it. I smell that stuff and I can't help it! I drop everything and I come running!"

"Okay!" Nigel said taking the spicy bacon. "Do you have a little baggie or something I could put this in?"

"You get a move on or I'll eat that right here!" Raine said

Nigel nods and puts it away and quickly heads back to the stump, now that he had the permit, Wiz will have to give him the advanced combat training.

Well Nigel now has the Learner's Permit now she has to face Wiz's Shooting Gallery.
