Author's Note: Before you complain, yes, in this AU Frisk is regarded as female, but, I did keep a little bit of the ambiguity of their gender, as you'll soon see… in about 6 to 7 more chapters ;). (Also, if you wondering about the other fanfics, I'm going to be focusing on this one for a bit… at least I only have 10 chapters planned before taking a break… but I will do them sporadically)
Eve walked with Toriel through a weird, purple, surprisingly well lit room. She could see anything well, except her. She was the only one who she could see clearly. Why?
They walked through what looked like a purple hallway, covered with green… things (she just assumed it was paint and just thought it was a weird colouring choice). They continued to walk, as Eve held onto Toriel's hand.
"You know, if I knew someone would be here, I would've gone out a bought some more things. I lived alone down here in these ruins, for a while. You're lucky that it wasn't too long another human was here."
'Another human.'
A question then popped into Eve's mind.
"What was the name of that child?"
"Frisk… why?"
Eve did all she could to hide her face.
'Could it be… is she… no… she could still be alive… she has to be."
"Nothing."
Toriel knew she was lying.
"Well, look at this."
They had just stopped in a room. She had no idea why.
"Now may be a good time to start your first lesson. I always wanted to be a teacher. You see that dummy?"
Eve only saw blurry lines of something beige.
"No… sorry, I can't see that well without glasses, and I lost mine when I fell down."
"Oh no, don't worry, well, just pretend there's someone there."
"OK."
Eve walked forward, but as she did, she realised that the red glow returned. The heart thing returned, as it monitored around her. Every direction she faced, the thing followed. But, it seemed to glow brighter the closer Eve stepped forward.
"Is this good enough?"
"Yes, my child. Now, underground, monsters will attempt to kill you down here, and there, you have two choices. You can either fight and kill every monster that gets in your way… or, you befriend. As long as you stay determined, there's no challenge you can't talk out of."
Eve then saw a screen. It read "You encountered Dummy." along with four options below; FIGHT! ACT! ITEM and MERCY! She pressed ACT! And saw two options on the screen… 'Check' and 'Compliment'.
She pressed the 'Check option', as a voice inside her head rang.
"Dummy, ATK 0, DEF -5."
She then decided to check the other options. She picked 'Compliment'.
"Well then, think of a compliment."
"Wait, what! I'm supposed to think of one!"
But the voice didn't respond. She thought hard.
"Ugh… I like the colour beige."
Nothing.
"Ummm, don't look at me like that, I think it looks beige-iful."
Toriel laughed at that kinda stupid pun. But the dummy didn't do anything. She decided to tell them her most famous knock knock joke.
"Knock, knock."
Nothing.
"Nobody."
Nothing.
"Huh, who are you talking to? Nobody's here."
Toriel laughed out loud. The dummy meanwhile, still didn't budge.
Eve thought of some way to finish this test. Then, an idea slipped in.
"How about a hug and a kiss? That's something people do to show affection."
"What?"
But it was too late, as Eve had already hugged the dummy, and then she kissed it. The dummy then fell down, likely embarrassed.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Did I fail?"
Toriel was still in a little shock, but quickly got out of it.
"Not at all child. Though, maybe hold the compliments back once you get to know them."
She starts to turn around to leave.
"I'll need to grab some things to prepare back home. You can find your way back, right?"
"Uh… I can't. I can't see, and… I think it would be dangerous to walk amongst the Ruins without a guardian. So if it's okay, can I stay with you?"
Toriel looked at her. She obviously felt scared, there was no hiding it. But, the ruins aren't exactly the most peaceful place in the world. Still, she couldn't just leave her.
"Sure child. I'll take you to the market with me, but you have to stay by my side at all time."
"Thank you. I promise I won't make… as much of a fuss as I did during the dummy part."
Toriel chuckled.
"I'm sure you won't."
Eve and Toriel travelled through the Ruins, in an attempt to buy some things. Eve got used to the monsters down there, including the Froggit ("THEY'RE SO CUTE!"), to the DJ Napstablook ("WOW, This track is fire. Better than most things us humans listen to nowadays.")
And Eve was able to see them all clearly.
For some reason, although the area around was blurry, the monsters around all she can see clearly. It felt unnatural. But, she thought Toriel would know.
Eventually, they reached a market. Eve hummed to herself Napstablook's track as Toriel grabbed some things.
"Oh, and, before I ask… which do you prefer, cinnamon, or butterscotch?"
"Cinnamon, why?"
"Well, I'm thinking, why don't we have some pie when we get home?"
"Sounds good. I never really liked Butterscotch, anyways. My sis, though, loves it."
"And what is this sister… I might ask."
Eve looked down at the Earth. She didn't want to talk about it. But, she decided to give her a little bit of an explanation.
"She… was one of the kindest kids I've ever known. And one of the most determined ever. She has her mind set on something, she won't stop until she gets it… even if to a fault."
"Oh, can I get a name?"
Eve just looked down.
"Ummm… Hey, it's getting late, how are you?"
"Your groceries, miss."
"Just about finished, I guess."
"Ok, good."
The two headed through the Ruins, while Toriel couldn't shake the feeling that Eve wasn't telling her everything. But, they eventually got to the house.
"I'll be there to prepare some things. I wasn't expecting a guest so soon. Take your time to get used to the place."
Eve did exactly that, deciding to look around. The house was surprisingly spacious, but felt very home-like. There were two rooms on the left side of the hallway, the kitchen on the right side, a staircase in the middle of it, and a lounging room, with an already lit fire.
"Miss Toriel, how did you get this fire up so fast?"
"Oh, that's simple, child… See, us monsters have special powers from our magic. Monsters are made out of magic, so we can use it however we want. However, we can use it to do what we want."
She then demonstrated by activating some fire from her hand. Eve then thought about something.
"Is that how I can see you?"
"Whatever do you mean, child?"
"I… can;t see anything else. But for some reason, every single monster is visible to me. Do you think I can see you because of magic?"
"I mean, it could be possible…"
Toriel was lost in thought.
"It's getting late dear, why don't I bake the pie, we eat it, and then go to sleep?"
"Sounds good."
Eve said that with a little bit of a depressed tone.
"It will take a minute for me to bake, but I should be done in a bit. Why don't you get used to the place for a bit?"
"You sure I can't help. I'm a real help in the kitchen."
"Really."
"No, my brother does."
Toriel chuckled.
"No, I think I'm fine."
Eve just smiled, deciding to leave and let Toriel bake. To be honest, it's felt like forever since Eve had a proper parent figure in her life.
She then decided to explore more of the place. That's when she found a mirror. And a figure stared back at her. She noticed it immediately. She wore the same red and orange striped shirt, had the same burnette, laid down hair, and the same pale skin.
But there was one thing that changed.
Her eyes were now red.
What used to be just brown pupils now was red, with her in awe of it. When touching the mirror, she thought she heard a voice that said, "It's you, Eve." That unnerved her. What was that voice? Who said that?
"Eve, pie's ready!"
Eve quickly got out of it from those words. She went to eat, and the pie was so good… almost as good as…
"Are you okay, my child?"
Eve looked at Toriel for a moment.
"Yeah, just… thinking… of… stuff…"
Toriel got suspicious.
"Oh, like what?"
"Oh, you know, human stuff, like… taxes."
(Eve's POV: 'SERIOUSLY, YOU'RE NOT EVEN OLD ENOUGH TO DRIVE A CAR!)
"Hmmm, I see… Well, it's getting late… and we have a lot to do tomorrow."
"Yeah… we do…"
Eve decided to go into the bedroom from the far left. She was exhausted, and after a day like that, who wouldn't.
She also felt… happy… a feeling she never thought she'd feel again. She was so grateful for Toriel, who just took her in, and cared for her as if she was her own kid. She had almost forgotten how it felt to have… a mom.
She lost her mother not too long ago, but for some reason, it felt like ages since she last thought about her. She guessed that after focusing on Frisk, she… never had a chance to process it.
It hurts.
Nothing could get passed the fact that she lost her mom, and her dad was framed for said murder. She teared up a bit.
"Child, is something the matter?"
Eve looked and saw Toriel at the door.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Don't lie to me.'
Eve was shocked.
"The last child that fell down here had some… secrets. I didn't want to invade back then, but now, I know something is bothering you."
Eve looked up at her, as she remained lying down.
"You can tell me."
Eve sighed.
"I… had a mom. I don't really know her name, but you remind me a lot of her. She was kind… she stood up for us… she even supported us… we had our rough moments… but we always got through it. Until she was gone. No one knows why, so, of course, they blamed my dad for the murder, being the only one prevalent."
"I lost both parents that day, and then… Frisk had to climb that mountain…"
Toriel was shocked upon hearing those words.
"Miss Toriel…"
"Your… sister… her name was Frisk…"
"Yes… I thought I saw her, but… I ended up falling down here."
"Your sister… was Frisk…"
"Yeah… wait, what do you mean was?"
Toriel looked at her.
"Frisk… came down here a month ago… and I heard she made many good friends… with the monsters down here… but still… We haven't heard from her in a while…"
"How long…"
Toriel sighed.
"Three weeks…"
Eve collapsed at the news. Three weeks and no one has heard from her sister. Is it true then… is Frisk really?
"Eve, are you alright?"
Toriel looked concerned.
"Yeah… it's… do you think Frisk is still… alive?"
Toriel looked at her, concerned.
"Who knows… but I do know that no child has ever survived against Asgore."
Eve was worried.
"Hey, do you have… a nightlight…?"
"No, why?"
"I'm just… kinda scared of the dark… I never slept without one."
"I can do one better, be back in a minute."
Toriel left the room. About a minute later, she came back with a lamp in her hands. She lit her hand on fire and put it in the candle to light it up.
"I hope this will suffice."
Eve smiled.
"It's… perfect."
Toriel smiled back.
"I'm glad you liked it. I hope you get some rest. Goodnight Eve."
Toriel left the room, leaving a crack open.
"Goodnight Toriel."
She then fell immediately asleep. It was a long day.
"AHHH!"
"What do you hope to accomplish?"
"I don't know… but anything to get away from them…"
"AAAGGGHHH!"
"Huh."
Eve woke up, realising that that terrible speech was a dream. Yet it felt so real.
She looked around, and realised the room was fully lit. The lamp was put out, and there was a piece of the pie from yesterday on the floor. Along with a note.
She ate it, and then read the note.
"Meet me in the basement."
It was written with flame magic, so there was something that was going on. She tried to walk, but as she did, something happened. The world turned black, as she looked around, she thought she heard someone… But nah.
Eve then saw a faint, white glow out of the door. She stepped out of it, only to see the white glow emitting from somewhere. She then saw the fact that it came from the staircase in the main hallway. She went down stairs, slowly so that she wouldn't slip. She then found herself in a long, purple staircase, all around her. She just continued to follow the white light, which was slowly turning purple and orange. She eventually came to the source of it…
Toriel.
"So, our theory was correct."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, if you couldn't see, then in this case you were either lying… or you can see magic… a technique that was lost to time."
"What…what do you mean?"
"I'm guessing that you want to try and find your sister, Frisk… I must warn you… it will be a long and treacherous journey. The monsters down here don't take kindly to humans from the surface… which is why I'm coming with you."
"Look, I get you're worried for me, but… wait WHAT!"
"I stood on the sidelines long enough… just because I was scared what others would think of me…"
"Why…"
"It's… best not to think about it."
Toriel said that last line with some concern.
"Come, the door's blocked, but I may be able to get the rubble out of the way."
But as she said that, she started to move the rocks, only for them to start to collapse. The rubble was too unstable as the rubble started to fall.
"TORIEL!"
Eve started getting flashbacks. She saw her Mom, dead on the floor, as she swapped back Toriel, who was about to suffer the same fate. Just then, time slowed to a crawl. It felt as though she was on her own with her thoughts. They were all over the place, but there was one that rang out louder than the rest.
"I'm not losing a mother again…"
"AAAAGGGGHHHH!"
Just as she thought that, she moved her hands forward, throwing a fireball at the rubble, blowing it up, saving Toriel, and destroying the rubble, leaving an open room where it was to the outside.
Before anyone could process what had just happened, the roof started to crumble. It was about to collapse.
"Let's get out of here."
As Eve said that, she pulled Toriel out of the Ruins, and into the cold forest up ahead.
They looked back at the Ruins, only to see it blocked off by the rubble ahead.
Eve's hand was still on fire.
"AHH!"
She scrambled to blow it out, as Toriel attempted to calm her.
"It's okay, just stay calm. It won't hurt you."
Eve eventually calmed down. She then saw the fire disappear.
"I thought humans couldn't do magic."
"I don't know what's going on with me."
Toriel came closer to her, and put her hand on Eve.
"It's okay. You don't have to do it alone."
The two hugged each other. Eve was filled with Determination with that.
"Thanks… Now come on, I have a sister to find."
The two set off on a new journey. What they'll find, they'll never know. But they did not know of someone right behind them. They glowed green, and smiled.
"Good luck… mom."
Author's Note: Phooey that's a long chapter. I'm kinda proud of it though. But yeah… Eve has magic. And don't worry, I'm still invested in this story, it's just taking a while to make given the fact I also have to balance my new high school with it.
Also, before I forget… Happy 8th anniversary Undertale. Thank you Toby Fox for making an experience that the world will never forget in a long time… And we'll always stay determined.
