It was a gloomy day in Seattle,Washington. It was the funeral of Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey. Everyone from the hospital was at the funeral. Addison flew in last night after work. She arrived at Callie's house, the two ladies cried, laughed and took care of Sofia. They fell asleep in Callie's bed with Sofia in between them. Sofia was young so she didn't grasp the fact that her dad had passed away. Addison knew she would have to be the strong on for Callie and Sofia.
Callie, Arizona, and Addison sat on the front row, while Sofia was asleep in Callie's arms. Callie was crying into Addison's shoulder, Addison had an arm around her friend and rubbed it in comfort. Addison tried to keep in her tears. Mark has been her friend for years then to see those years of friendship being buried, broke Addison's heart. She hated that she hadn't talked to Mark in months. She wished that she called in more but life gets in the way. She wished that she kept that connection, she hoped he knew she was here with his family. Addison was grateful that Mark asked her to be the godmother of his daughter before he passed away. She was happy within that moment to be thankful that they even talked about the abortion.
She knew Mark had a big heart, she hated that it's always the people who have the biggest heart go out in the most painful of ways.
Callie was a walking mess. She lost her baby father but also her best friend. Her and Derek were sitting on either side of Mark's bed as the machine showed the end of his life. That day, she lost another guy she loved in that hospital. She couldn't bring herself to call Addison knowing she would break down in tears again. Derek told her he would do it. Addison flew to Seattle after work, to be there for Callie. Callie and Addison slept in Callies bed that night with Sofia. Neither of them wanted to waste a moment with the baby who didn't know what was going around her. Callie was thankful her friend was with her because if she wasn't it. Callie would be a bigger mess then she is now. Callie didn't think her and Mark would be the best friend duo that they were. She didn't think she would have his baby. She knew he was grateful, he told her plenty of times after Sofia was born but it felt like those words were being buried with the years they spent together.
Arizona tried to be the shoulder that Callie cried on during the funeral but she realized in this moment Callie needed Addison. She came home to find Callie and Addison in bed with Sofia in between. Callie looked peaceful and it didn't look like she was crying for days. Sofia was unaware of what was going around her during this hard harsh time. Arizona and Mark in the beginning had a few patches but towards the end it was better. Arizona didn't think he would affect her life this much in the time of knowing him. She went to sleep in the guest bedroom trying to figure out how to be thankful that Addison is there for her wife and daughter.
To her, it was a normal day of titi Addison visiting. She had a frown on her face that turned into a sad smile with hot tears touching her head as her godmom held her close. She wasn't aware of what was going on but she didn't see her around anymore. Last thing she saw was Jackson taking her to see her dad, then Jackson handing her to a nurse, telling her to keep her far from the room and give her to Callie. That night, she slept in between her mom and Tia, keeping them laughing from crying. Yet every once in a while they would both break out in tears. The two adults cried themselves to sleep as she slept comfortably, both protecting her from the evil of the world. She was unaware that those future daddy-daughter dances would be buried under the earth.
After Mark went into the ground and was buried Addison and Callie walked hand in hand. Callie's head on her shoulder as Addison was holding Sofia who was now sleeping. Arizona walked beside the three, it seemed she was moving on auto pilot trying to keep up but Alex was next to her making sure she didn't fall. They went to the funeral reception at Meredith's house. Callie and Arizona were talking to everyone, as Addison was sitting down in the corner holding a still sleeping Sofia. Derek checked on Addison and they both had cried. He asked if she wanted him to take Sofia, and she held tighter onto the small girl and said no she's keeping my emotions in tact. Derek understood why Addison was suddenly protective of Sofia. He knew Addison was protecting the little girl from the unknowns in the world. Derek knew that Addison was going to be the person Sofia depended on the most in her life. He can tell Addison was making promises to herself to keep that little girl safe.
Richard came around effectively and sat next to Addison. He offered her a plate of food and to take Sofia out of her eyes. Addison gave him a sad death glare look. Richard knew not to push it but he put an arm around Addison's shoulder and let her cry onto his shoulder. Once Addison was done she said thank you and put her cheek on top of Sofia's head. Richard knew that Mark was once a man that Addison loved, along with their baby but now she was pouring all of that love into Sofia.
Sofia woke up to see Bailey talking to her Tia about her LA and Mark. She looked to see Bailey was smiling at her and she smiled back. Even if today was a hard day, her family still made her laugh in between all of the tears. Bailey offered to take Sofia but Sofia snuggled closer to Addison not wanting to leave her aunt's arms. Bailey knew Sofia could sense that Addison was upset and that she needed her. Bailey and Addison made eye contact with Callie who was talking to Cristina. All three of them had sad eyes that were being masked by a thin veil of fake happiness.
Callie ended her conversation with Cristina to go over to Addison, Sofia, and Bailey. Callie held arms out for Sofia's but Sofia snuggled closer to Addison not wanting to leave her arms. Callie wasn't feeling defeated by this, she felt somewhat okay that her daughter was being her best friend's comfort buddy. The three ladies talked and cried some more about Mark. Laughing at the time Bailey called him a man-whore in her speech to the nurses. Callie remembered how hurt Mark was by that speech, even though he really wasn't.
At some point, Alex and Jackson came over with plates for the ladies. Karev knew Addison didn't eat all day, he argued with her until she agree to get up from the chair and go into the dining room. Sofia was awake by now, he took her from Addison. Jackson pushed the highchair next to Addison and Alex put Sofia in it. Meredith put a plate in front of Callie and Addison as April gave Sofia some food. Derek and Richard sat at the table to make the two ladies ate. Arizona came to check on Callie making sure she was okay. Callie told her she was and went to check on the other guest. In the middle of eating Addison got a call from Jake to check if she was okay. Addison told him she's going to take two more days just to make sure Callie is going to be okay.
That night Addison, Callie, Arizona and Sofia went home. Addison stayed in the guestroom with Sofia. Arizona offered to take Sofia for the night but Addison insisted on having Sofia. Addison wanted baby cuddles and to spend time with Sofia. Callie stayed in the room until midnight. Sofia was fast asleep. Addison watched as her chest was moving up and down from her deep slumber. Addison stroked her hair and pressed a kiss onto her forehead. "Mark, I promise to be there for Callie and Sofia. Sofia I promise to be the person you can rely on. I love you both" Addison says as she cuddles closer to Sofia and goes to sleep.
