Chapter 43 Welcome To Pleasantville
Dean and Sam drove for hours in the car for their destination listening to good music on the radio or playing a tape like the usual do during their long drives. Sometime after noon, they finally parked their car in a parking lot of a store and started to eat the lunch Gwen prepared for them along with the drinks. They also used that time for Dean to call Ava and Charlie who had also took a break for lunch on their journey and Sam called Gwen who was doing okay back at the bunker, she and Adam are preparing to go see a movie out of town soon and Adam also talked a bit with them. They talked for quite a while then hung up.
It was a little after 1:00pm, so after using the restroom, they continued with their journey. They drove on for several more hours stopping, eating a snack whenever they got a bit hungry, stopping a few times for bathroom breaks at a gas station or restaurant and maybe to check up on Ava and Charlie or Gwen and Adam who had finished watching their movie which was an action flick that Adam had been wanting to go see and Gwen enjoyed it too despite not being a fan of those genres. By the evening, they stopped at a restaurant for dinner. Afterwards, they headed for a bar to unwind with some beer and play some pool since they knew they wouldn't get to their destination that night anyway, and called their girlfriends and Adam and Charlie once again because they couldn't resist checking up on them at least a few times that day.
After a couple of hours at the bar, the brothers left and was back on the road again until it really got late, and they decided to check into a motel for the night. They got texts from Ava and Charlie who also checked into motel when it got really late and being exhausted, they didn't even bother watching the television, just got into bed and went to sleep. Early, the next morning, they got up and by 8:30 and had gone to a nearby diner for breakfast then returned to the motel, checked in on the others again and watched the news for a bit. The guys left by 10:00 to continue on their journey relieved they didn't have that much further to go.
Within a few more hours, they were at their destination in Pleasantville, Ohio. It was definitely a small town, the type you see in those movies with a group of rednecks and the town sheriff the only law enforcer in the whole town with only one deputy and a small, where g knows each other, and strangers are looked upon as suspicious.
"Wow, nice to be in Mayberry" Dean said sarcastically as they drove around and noticed they were getting stares by people around them.
"Don't pay attention to that, we just need to find that motel that's all" Sam told him.
They soon found the town's motel which was also quite small and old looking and they soon parked the Impala and got out. They then went inside to talk to the owner who was at the front desk, an elderly man with a white beard.
"Hello, I guess you want a room" he told them.
"Yeah, with two beds" Dean said to him.
"Sure, okay, hmm, you two are out of towners, I take it, we don't get too many of them lately, what just passing through or visiting somebody?" he asked them.
"Just say we're here on business and that's all we can tell you" Sam said.
"Sure okay" said the owner unphased.
Soon after showing their IDs and all, he handed them the key to a motel room, and they headed to the room. Just as they about to enter their room with a key, Dean turned to the left and noticed a woman also at a motel door about to enter the room. She was a long red-headed woman that looked like a typical biker chick as she was wearing black tank top with some decorations which he couldn't get a good look at, but she also had on a black leather vest jacket and black jeans with a spiked belt. She briefly glanced at him, and he could see she was quite a nice-looking chick and a sexy badass vide to her. She would have definitely been the type of woman he would have gone for the past until he met Ava. In fact, her red hair actually made him think of Ava again.
They glanced at each other at the same time for a brief second as their eyes made contact before Sam interrupted. "Dean, come on dude, let's go already" he urged Dean and Dean quickly turned away and unlocked their door and entered the room really quick and shut the door.
"Really Dean?" Sam asked and just sat down on the bed wanting to relax for a bit.
"Hey, nothing wrong with looking and enjoying the scenery, I may be spoken for now but I'm not dead" Dean told him with a "what did I do" look on his face.
Sam just shook his head. "Anyway, I'm bushed already, and we just got here" he said.
"Yeah, me too, wonder what Ava and Charlie are doing right now are they in Houma yet?" Dean wondered.
"It will take them longer to get to that place, you can call them again if you want" Sam said.
"Hey, I figure we take a break of the calling, we already talked to them earlier, we don't need to call them every hour" Dean said.
"Yeah, I know, I feel that way about Gwen, think I give her some space, I'm sure she and Adam are doing just fine" Sam said.
"Okay, well, I think after getting a little bit of rest, we go and talk to the cops about the murders" Dean said.
"Fine" Sam said.
They rested for about forty minutes, then got up, washed up a bit and changed into their suits carrying their fake FBI badges and IDs. Sam had checked for the local police only to find that Pleasantville has a police station, but the nearest law enforcement agency is the Fairfield County Sheriff's office in the nearby city of Lancaster. After checking the location using the map on the internet, they headed out the door and was back in their car heading for the sheriff's office. It didn't take them too long to arrive in Lancaster, only a little over fifteen minutes and soon, they found the Sheriff's office. They went inside the building and talked to a desk clerk asking for the sheriff waving around their FBI badges and the clerk soon told them where the sheriff was. The two then walked over and entered the Sheriff's personal office room and in front of them sat a middle-aged man.
"What can I help you two fellows with?" the sheriff asked curiously.
Soon Sam and Dean took out their FBI badges and showed them to the sheriff.
"I'm agent John Van Holt and this is my partner agent Bobby Springfield" Dean said.
The sheriff looked taken aback not expecting to be approached by the FBI and it sparked his curiosity as he sat up in his chair.
"The FBI, what can I do you, fellas?" he asked.
We are here over the recent killings in Pleasantville, and from what we gathered your office is investigating the case" Dean told him.
"Yes, we are investigating those murders but how come the FBI has gotten involved?" he asked them.
"That is the FBI's choice, we don't question just go where we are instructed, and we have been ordered to come here and investigate that case" Dean told him firmly.
"Still don't see why the FBI has to take over, but I'm willing to cooperate by whatever is necessary I guess," said the sheriff.
"Perfect" said Dean.
"Just give us the data on all the recent murders" Sam instructed.
"Sure thing" said the sheriff.
Then the sheriff called in the desk clerk to get him all the files of the recent murders in Pleasantville and after the man handed him some documents, he left the room as the sheriff went over the documents.
"Okay, yes, the first of these killings happened four weeks ago. The victim was a Roy Pendleton, 54 a plumber who worked in Thornville, although a resident of Pleasantville. He was last seen walking home late one night on a Friday from the bar at around 11:00 since he lives very close to the bar, he sometimes walks there rather than use his car, plus his wife had the car as she had left that morning to attend a relative's funeral. When his wife returned that Sunday, she reported him missing and his body was later found a couple of days later by a father and his son out hunting in the woods. His body was basically mangled and torn open like he was attacked by a wild animal and get this his heart had been ripped out. It was the most gruesome murder my deputies had ever seen, some of them still can't get that image of out their minds" he told them.
The sheriff even showed them the photo of Roy's corpse and it was quite a gruesome sight but both Dean and Sam had been used to that.
"What about the other killings?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, there were two more similar murders after that" said the sheriff as he looked through the other documents. "Of course, here's Billy Ashton, 36, who worked at the gas station in Pleasantville. His happened just a couple of weeks ago, when his shift was over it was around 10:30, when left the station to go home, just got in his car and left. However, his wife said he never made it home. She even called the gas station but Billy's boss had already gone home and other employee who was working the late shift said he left already. She called our office for help, but we couldn't do anything until he was missing at least 24 hours. Then the next morning, his car was found on the side of the road empty. Later, the deputies once again found his body in the woods not too far away from his car, where he too had been ripped open in the exact same way as Roy, heart removed in all" the sheriff finished as he showed them a photo of Billy's mutilated corpse.
"Who was the last victim?" asked Dean as he and Sam looked over Billy's corpse.
"The last one just happened just this past Friday. His name was Ned Gruber age 35 and he worked at the town's pharmacy. Anyway, he was at the home of a Myra Roseboro his neighbor and he along with two other people" the sheriff said.
"Scrabble huh, funny I thought that was something old folks do" Dean replied.
"Well, from what we gathered they were playing for money, kind of like poker, only whenever they score a point, the others have to pay him or her each a dollar" the sheriff said.
"Interesting way to play scrabble" Sam replied.
"I know, and to top it off, this Ned guy won. Anyway, the game was over at about 10:30 and all the guests left the place to go home, and Ned lived so close by. Anyway, the next day, another neighbor who was one of the players went over to his house knocked on the door, but nobody answered which was unusual according to the neighbors. Anyway, this neighbor then looked through his window and saw his mutilated body in his living room. She called our sheriff's office right away and sure enough, my deputies found this poor fellow on the floor in the living room blood everywhere his body was just like that of the other two victims and one of his windows was half open which according to those who know him, he sometimes leaves the windows open during the warm weather at nights since Pleasantville is or was a safe town to live nobody worried about crime that much" the sheriff finished and showed them the photo of Ned's mutilated body and Dean and Sam looked the photo over too.
"Did anybody hear or see anything?" Dean asked.
"Well, a couple of his neighbors including Ms. Roseboro said they thought they heard a sound outside but some of them had their TVs on at the time tell. The neighbor that discovered his body said that she also thought he heard sound coming from outside but when she looked out her bedroom window, it was quiet, besides she said she had her Tv on at the time and was watching a late mystery movie so, she couldn't be sure" the sheriff said.
"What type of sound?" asked Sam.
"Well, she couldn't be sure but at first, she thought it sounded like an animal or something, but that's absurd. Anyway, her house is very near this Gruber's so that when she looked out her window, she could see his house" the sheriff added.
"If this woman could see his house through the window perhaps, she maybe saw something else too, I mean sometimes witnesses remember a few details later" Dean replied.
"Well as a matter of fact, this witness is coming later this afternoon to inform us that she did remember something that could make a difference, she will be here around 2:00, if you mind sticking around until then" the sheriff said.
"Right now, we want to examine the body of the victims at the coroner" Sam said.
"Well, the two other bodies have been performed one has already been buried and the other the funeral is tomorrow, but they still have the latest victim. Of course, you can view the autopsy report although it won't say anything special other than that the victims appeared to be killed by a wild animal" the sheriff replied.
"Well will head over to the coroner anyway and check out the latest victim then head back here for your witness; we would like to be present when she comes in for questioning and may have some questions ourselves" Dean said.
"Sure thing, sirs," said the sheriff.
"Just out of curiosity, what do you think killed those men, do you really believe it was some wild animal?" Sam couldn't help but ask.
"Me, hmmm" the sheriff thought for a bit then looked up at Sam and Dean. "I personally don't buy no wild animal, I mean that is not normal, what wild animal goes around just killing a group of folks, ripping out their hearts. Besides, this Gruber fellow was killed inside his own home, and we have found no trace of an animal on or near the victims. It appeared like these killings were premediated; we are convinced of that. The only explanation is that this is being done by a twisted serial killer who is using some kind of weapon to tear open these victims and rip their hearts out and make it seem like it's being done by some wild animal, maybe to through us off or have some sick thrill of pretending to be like an animal" he answered.
"Uh huh" replied Sam.
"Well, anyway thanks for your input, but right now we will visit the coroner and be back here for this witness as we have some questions of our own" Dean replied.
"Sure thing fellas, we will wait for you guys" said the sheriff.
The sheriff gave them directions to the county coroners which was also in Lancaster, and they wrote the address down. Afte leaving the building, both Dean and Sam discussed the matter as they were heading for the car.
"Definitely sounds like a werewolf" Dean said.
"100%" Sam replied.
"Well, we will know for sure once we get to the coroner office" Dean said.
The two of them hopped in the car and drove off and eventually arrived at the coroner's office. They entered the building and upon flashing their FBI badges and introducing themselves, they asked to see the corpse of Ned Gruber in the morgue. The coroner showed them the compartment where Ned was being kept, pulled it out and then removed the white sheet covering the body. Soon both Dean and Sam were facing the mutilated and mangled body of the latest victim. The body looked pale, eyes slightly open and his mouth halfway open. Neither Dean nor Sam looked phased at how graphic the body was but just kept looking it over. The coroner went over and pointed at the parts of the body.
"You'll see here, his throat was ripped apart in a brutal way, you would think some kind of creature did it as it doesn't look like any human could have done that" he said as he pointed at the man's neck area that had been brutally sliced. Then he pointed at the man's chest and stomach area.
"Of course, here he was basically ripped open, and his heart had been torn out and so was some of his intestines" the coroner went on.
Dean and Sam just observed as the corner put his and between the opening of the man's chest that had been ripped open and wearing gloves, he pried the opening to make it wider where they could see inside and noticed there was no heart at all and could see down the stomach area that some of the man's intestines were missing.
"It is certainly not anything I have ever seen during my whole career as coroner, and I have seen a lot even the most brutal serial killer hasn't done anything like this" the coroner replied.
"Yes, this is quite unusual to say the least" replied Dean trying to sound so professional like as he kept observing the body.
Then he looked up at the coroner. "We would like to see the autopsy reports of the two other victims" he told him.
"Sure thing" said the coroner.
Within several minutes, the guys were looking over the autopsy reports of the other two victims and the read them over thoroughly in which the injuries described were similar to the Ned Gruber's and the copy of photos of their corpses were the same as the ones at the sheriff's office. After looking everything over, they finally left the coroner's and were more than convinced that the killings were done by a werewolf. Later they went to the local diner to get their lunch where they continued to discuss the matter.
"Do you think the killings were done by only one werewolf are did they come in packs?" asked Sam.
"I don't know Sam; it could go either way but yeah sometimes these werewolves kill in pacts as we have killed pacts of them before but then again who knows. All of them have been committed late at night but I noticed none of the killings happened during a full moon, which means the werewolf is blueblood" Dean replied.
"But who could he, she or they be, that's the question?" asked Sam.
"I doubt the killer or killers would be long time residents, not in a small town like that, so I figure we try to find out about any recent arrivals in the town" Dean said.
"That won't be hard to find out in a town where everybody would practically know everybody" Sam added.
After they finished their lunch, they decided to wait for a while and then when the time was getting closer, they headed back the sheriff's office to meet the witness.
"Wonder what this mysterious witness has to say, I doubt she saw who killed this Gruber dude or she would have stated that already" Dean said.
"Yeah, maybe she remembered something that could give the sheriff a clue or something like that. I can't believe we didn't even bother to ask the sheriff what her name is the whole time we were there" said Sam.
"Hey, we were so anxious about getting the facts about the victims and besides, does it matter, it's not like we are going to know who she is anyway, we'll find out once we get there" said Dean.
They finally arrived back at the sheriff's office and were in his office room talking with the sheriff.
"Hey, it slipped our minds the last time but what is the name of this woman?" Sam asked.
"Yes, her name is…." the sheriff was about say her name when there was knock on the door.
"That is probably her right now" he replied then called out, "Who Is it?"
The door opened and a deputy and it was a deputy. "Sheriff, the witness is here right now" he said.
"Okay, send her in" said the sheriff and within few seconds the woman who was right behind the deputy entered the room.
"That will be all deputy" the sheriff said as he closed the door.
As soon the woman arrived both Sam and Dean eyes lit up and their mouths were open in shock at who they were looking at. They just couldn't believe it a thousand years that they would be facing this person again and now under these circumstances as the woman in the room was none other than Becky Rosen.
