Few days later
Hopping from building to building, Tomoko slowly makes her way back to the hotel after her morning workout. Since Ryuzaki was no longer tasked with spying on anyone, she had plenty of time to spoil the shadow of her isolated place with her physical activity in human form. The location wasn't particularly niche, just a rooftop on one of Tokyo's tallest buildings with limited access that guaranteed her privacy. And even if someone decided to break in while she was there, she would hear him. She liked being able to be in her human form without pinching her ears under her wig or curling her tail around her waist. But she couldn't sit like that all day because the others would worry, because somehow she had taught them to expect her to come back every day and she never stays out overnight for a number of reasons.
Like every evening, she would enter the room through the open window and the first thing she would do would be to go to the kitchen, where this time she found Watari preparing dinner for her and the others who happened to be in the room next to them, while he was listening to the news on to the television in the other corner of the kitchen. Tomoko climbed onto the kitchen table when Watari finally noticed her and smiled at her. "Welcome back Kei, you're a little early today," he told her and then wiped his hand on the towel that was on the counter next to him and stroked her head as he continued talking. "Dinner isn't ready yet, why wouldn't you join the others in the living room." At that, only Tomoko lay down on the table, not wanting to move from the kitchen to at least keep Watari company.
Anyway, when she entered, she smelled Aizawa and Matsuda's scents, and she didn't want to listen to arguments and remarks from Aizawa, nor to waste time or nerves that Matsuda was trying to caress and hug her. Watari was certainly great company according to her because he didn't always talk about case, he talk about other things too, like when the cherry blossoms bloomed in Tokyo and how they left an unforgettable impression, giving him a brief enjoyment and rest to think about Kira. She also went with Watari yesterday to visit Soichiro in the hospital to check on his progress and to let him know not to worry and that he is quite calm for now. Of course Tomoko had to sneak into the hospital because animals weren't allowed so when Watari entered the room first he opened the window and let her in.
Soichiro was happy that everything was fine for now in the Task Force and that he was glad that Watari and Kei visited him. Even as she left the room Soichiro asked Kei to keep an eye on the rest of the Task Force especially Aizawa and Matsuda. Aizawa not to go overboard with arguments and intrusions which wasn't that hard because it seemed like he was starting to fear her. It was a different story for Matsuda since he was constantly trying to make friends with Kei even though the task wasn't too difficult but she was really bothered by their behavior sometimes. As it was, the peace did not last long, on television, more precisely on the Sakura TV channel, very disturbing news began to appear. Watari was the first to notice that something was going on and immediately stopped everything he was doing and stopped to listen to what it was really about. As Tomoko turned her attention to the TV Watari was already heading to the living room to inform the others while Tomoko just then heard the words,, ... Kira hostages." only then did her brain process what it was about. When her brain processed what she heard jumping to her feet and started to join the others all confused because the other Kira wasn't supposed to show up yet.
When the others arrived Kira was explaining how his next victims were going to have heart attacks as the wasps changed channels like crazy to follow up as Watari went to get more TVs. , This is not good at all I have to do something... think Tomoko, think.' She then got an idea and rushed to Watari's room to get what she needed while the others tried to make contact with the broadcast to stop it but to no avail. Then Ukita lost his temper and stormed out before Tomoko back to the room. Tomoko quickly analyzing the situation ran out the window while the others were watching the broadcast, rushing to get to Ukito in time so he wouldn't get hurt. She managed to get downstairs before Ukita could get her out of the hotel and waited for him to appeared not far from his car. When she noticed Ukita approaching she stopped right in front of the driver's door of the car and hissed as loudly as she could to get his attention. Ukita was surprised to find Kei blocking his access to the car for only a second until he noticed that she was holding something in her mouth. Tomoko threw a black full face mask in front of him and then turned to the car with a look over her petite shoulder that said,, let's go,,. Ukita looked at the mask and then back at Kei, not understanding what the she was trying to do and why she was giving him the mask.
It took him a few seconds to remember the moment when Kei tried to warn them not to show their IDs when they met L, as well as when she brought them the envelope from the video with the list of all the agents killed. Tadamu's brain worked and he understood what Kei was trying to tell him. Regardless of the fact that he did not know exactly why he needed the mask, he knew that there was a reason because he had been sure of one thing for a long time. Kei is not an ordinary cat but she is a friend. He picked up the mask from the ground and pulled it over his face and immediately got into the car, followed by Tomoko. He then drove as fast as he could with his siren on, towards the Sakura TV studio to try to stop Kira's message from being broadcast to the world.
All the time since the channel started broadcasting about Kira, Tomoko felt an uneasy and grey feeling in the back of her head as well as a tension in her body that was familiar to her and as she got closer to Sakura TV station, the feeling got stronger. The moment they stopped in front of the broadcast building, Ukita ran out of the car and tried to open the door with all his might, which was locked and the security guard refused to open it no matter how much Ukita shouted. Tomoko was a few steps behind him, scanning everything around her as she looked to see where the other Kira might be. She knew that Misa had been using binoculars to see faces and that she must have been in some of the higher floors of the suite where the lights had been turned off, but unfortunately for her there were only tall buildings around them and each had at least twenty darkened units, which didn't help at all and she didn't have time to explore each building individually.
Then she was surprised by the sound of Ukita's gun firing several times into the lock and then into the glass door which showed no signs of letting up. , Since when do public buildings have bulletproof glass.' thought Tomoko as she put her charms and plan to find Misa and began to focus on what was going on around her. After a few moments, a new police car appeared, from which another army of policemen got out, and as soon as they parked and got out of the car, they fell to the ground dead from a heart attack, which caused Ukito to freeze in place for a while, unable to believe what was happening. Tomoko felt a sudden shiver go through her body knowing that Misa had Shinigami eyes and could easily see her name but she knew that since the cat was ignorant of her angry face so for now she was safe as was Ukita and the rest of the Taks force.
Ukita still stood frozen in fear looking at Tomoko and then back at the downed cops not daring to move until a loud siren and a bright light caused Tomoko to rush towards Ukita and push him out of the way of the truck that moved straight towards the door. As the truck drove in, he pulled the door off its hinges and smashed the lock and made a passage to the inside of the building. , The chief really doesn't joke around.' thought Tomoko as she watched as Ukita got up and this time he showed no signs of squinting but hurried into the neutral with her where Chief Yagami was slowly moving towards the studio where the broadcast was being played. ,,Boss let me help you." Ukita shouted putting Boss Yagami's arm over his shoulder giving him support so they could move towards their destination more easily as Tomoko followed close behind them.
,,Ukita. Kei. You are fine." Ukita nodded and we started moving towards the studio. It didn't take them long to take all the tapes since the headmaster, as greedy as he was, was nothing but the most common coward who almost burst into tears as soon as Chief Yagami pointed his gun at him. The others in the studio literally froze and threw their hands up in the air as their director handed them all the copies of the tapes as well as the package they came in and everything that went with it. You could tell that they were so scared that they didn't dare to come out of the studio and follow them even though Chief Yagami was quite weak and you could see that he was still nowhere near recovered enough to move.
While they were moving through the dark corridor of the building Chief Yagami's phone started ringing, and as expected it was L who seemed concerned especially about the condition of the boss who answered it. "I feel just fine, to be honest with you, I've never felt more alive. I confiscated all tapes and copies. So what do you think we should do, going out the front exit would be too dangerous but we can always use the police van again." to which he paused and waited for an answer from L as to what to do next as Tomoko walked ahead of them a few steps and trying to listen to what was going on around them and asked of course that made the building almost completely empty. Even her eyes were starting to hurt a little because of the red light shining in the hallways which made her want to leave as soon as possible even more building.
Even though they managed to get what they came for, Tomoko was still nervous as the situation started to slowly veer off course and could become completely unpredictable at one point which would force her to use her skills to the max so that Kira wouldn't be able to he pulls it off so easily. ,, You want us to go out to the front entrance." Chief Yagami asked with uncertainty in his voice before hanging up. Ukita seemed even more worried about his boss as it seemed to him that his condition was getting worse and going out to the front entrance would for the boss it meant a turn from Kira because he didn't have a mask. Tomoko continued moving without hesitation knowing it was safe to get out as the two cops hesitantly along trusting L that everything would be fine.
After a few minutes of walking through the darkened corridor, with only the sound of their footsteps, where at the end an almost blinding light awaited them with a very interesting sight. The entire police department stood in front of the entrance with military vehicles and complete equipment that covered the entire body and face, through which no one could see them. All the lights were pointed towards the entrance where the car was waiting for them along with Hideki Ide who was holding the door open waiting for them. , This is how celebrities must feel when they travel. I have to admit that the feeling is not bad at all. Minus our lives literally depend on this." Tomoko commented in her head as she walked towards the car as the shocked boss and Ukita slowly followed her.
It was obvious how surprised they were that L managed to organize this so quickly. Luckily they quickly snapped out of their trance and got into the car driven by Ukita. In the car as they drove towards the hotel you could feel the relief that the worst had gone as planned. Tomoko had no idea how tense she was until she didn't get in the car. She could feel her heart nearly skip a beat and growl as it pumped with adrenaline, and her paws shook almost imperceptibly. For FBI agents, this was a regular occurrence and they were used to fighting and this kind of stress, but she seemed to realize that her cat body wasn't used to this kind of stress. Especially not for a long period of time. It also hit her to see Kira's power in action before her own eyes, which only added to it.
As Tomoko lay in the back seat and allowed her whole body to release all the stress from her, she felt Boss Yagami patted her head with his heavy and tired hand. "You were good today, Kei," he told her as he tried to steady his breathing and stay conscious as long as possible. His body was not at all grateful that barely five days after his heart attack, he went into action and overexerted himself. But Tomoko was glad they were starting to appreciate her, even though she was treated more like a pet and rarely a person. It was a nice feeling to know you were appreciated. "No kidding. Kei saved my head there. Thanks girl," Ukita said. They soon arrived back at the hotel where the rest of the team were waiting anxiously.
Ukita was the first to enter the room, helping Chief Yagami to walk and at the same time carrying the evidence, along with Watari who was helping the Chief on the other side. Everyone was very glad that both of them managed to get out of Kira's massacre in front of the TV station without major injuries. ,, We are sorry. Things got a little out of hand, but we managed to get all the tapes, copies and packaging that made it to the station. " said Ukita who was handing the material to L, who was looking at them with concern especially for the boss who could no longer stand on his feet. The boss nodded as Naomi started yelling at Ukita about how what he did was stupid, dangerous and rash, while L quickly went through the contents of the bag and then handed over to Aizawa who immediately sent with his connections in the forensics team for a detailed examination. L took copies of the tapes and prepared to watch them while Ukita and the boss rested in the bedroom rooms and brought Mogi and Matsuda back to the station to sort things out about the fiasco the boss made with the truck and the reporters poking their noses where they didn't belong.
Naomi wanted to join L in listening to the tapes but it was obvious that all this was exhausting her as well as she hadn't slept in the last couple of nights so her attention was lagging considerably. "Mew.." Tomoko meowed from the beginning of the window watching the entire interaction in the team from herself. Naomi, who was walking towards the room, stopped to say goodbye to her. "You're here, Kei." Naomi spoke taking her in her arms giving her a big hug and nuzzling her fur. Tomoko purred softly giving her the comfort she needed right now.. "I didn't even notice in all of this when you disappeared and the next moment you're on the screen with Ukita. You're one crazy cat." Naomi commented and then let Tomoko jump out of her arms as she scolded her in a baby voice that Tomoko didn't like at all, but she had to save what was left of her cat image.
Tomoko didn't waste time but settled on the back of the of armchair where L was sitting and waited for him to play the first recording so that she could get over this as soon as possible and manage to catch a few hours of sleep because she will definitely need it tomorrow. ,, The mask that Ukita was wearing during the broadcast stop, he didn't have when he left the room. You gave it to him didn't you." Not seeing any reason to hide anything from L, Tomoko just nodded confirming his theory. L took Tomoko in his arms for the first time and carefully scanned her from head to tail looking like he was thinking deeply about something.
Tomoko was shocked. Never in a million years would she have thought that L would take her in his arms, for this she was sure Watari would be shocked to see. ,, You knew something like this would happen. , right?" Tomoko didn't like where this was going, but she nodded her head honestly and confidently. "There is so much I don't know about you and you never cease to amaze me. You don't act like an ordinary cat. You understand what we're saying and process information like we do, even faster than the rest of the task force. You are able to analyze the situation in a moment and quickly find a solution. Although I fail to understand how you do it, I am sure of one thing. And that is that you have my full trust and that no matter what happens on this case and after it I would like you to stay with me and Watari. You will be great addition to our team. " this left Tomoko speechless.
Even though L says that he trusts someone there is a certain limit to which he lets anyone he works with. Even the statement itself says that he suspects something is wrong with her and that this was a big red flag that something is wrong with her as a cat, he is so into her that he wants her with him on other future cases as well. That is was a huge deal for L who only Watari knows his situation 24/7 as well as when he is most vulnerable and active... , Looks like a great detective needs a friend too. Well Sherlock we have a deal, I'll be your Watson." with a happy meow she confirmed the deal with L whom smiled slightly and moved her closer to his shoulders so she climbed up and assumed the standard position on his shoulders. "Let's not waste any more time and get back to the case."
