Chapter 9
"Take her to get x-rays and labs and page me when you have the results," I say to an intern before I shut the door to the attending's lounge. I put my back up against the door and let myself slide down to the floor. How is being chief of ortho so much harder here than it was at Seattle Grace? I think to myself. I look up at the ceiling and ask, "Are we sure we made the right decision leaving?"
"Just wait, you'll see why you're here," a little voice whispers in my head. I let out a sigh as I pull out my phone. I check my email and a medical journal I'm subscribed to has an update that catches my eye.
I read the headline and I let out a low growl. "'In the wake of a lawsuit, Seattle Grace Mercy West becomes a Harper Avery hospital and changes its name to Grey Sloan Memorial'," I read out loud. "What about Arizona? Did they forget that she died too?" I shake my head as I slide my phone away from me. I feel tears prick the back of my eyes. It's been a year. I didn't know something like this could throw me so much anymore.
My pager goes off and I wipe my eyes as I stand to my feet. I pick up my phone as I mutter, "Pity party's over I guess." I glance at my pager before heading to the pit. I walk up to an intern who waves me over. "You paged?" I ask.
"Yeah," the intern says. "Little girl, Bethany Harris, came in with a fever after a leg injury. Your name was on the chart when we pulled it as the surgeon who originally operated on her. She was one of the few who came in with that plane crash."
"Oh yeah," I say, looking over the chart, "I remember Bethany. You said she's back in with a fever?"
"And vomiting," the intern adds. "They took her to a room. Room 302."
"Alright, thanks," I say as I walk in the direction of the room. I pause outside the room, glancing in to make sure it's the right room. I notice the familiar face of the little girl I treated a few weeks prior, but I freeze as I notice a short brunette in the room with her. Who is that? I think to myself.
"That's why," the voice whispers. I smile to myself as I take a breath and walk into the room.
That is the end of "At the Bottom of Everything"! I hope you all enjoyed it!
Now, this is a prequel to the story I've already posted, titled "Flight 437". It picks up just about where this story leaves off and sets the rest of the stage for my Grey's Anatomy universe and my stories to come. Please read that one if you haven't already!
I am taking a short break from posting, but I will be posting the next story to my Grey's Anatomy series soon, as well as the next story in my Life is Strange series!
Until next time!
