It was hot, despite the wind. They had toiled up the hill to find nothing but a little lake, deep and lined with grey rock.

Baras wiped his forehead with his sleeve. "Waste of a half hour. Let us then return."

"What," said Madric, "shall we not first refresh ourselves? For here is water clear and clean, and the sun beats down as heavy on my brow as it does yours."

"There is water a-plenty to be found at the King's Pride," Kanian replied.

"Moreover, we have yet a walk before us," Ellion added. "It were to no purpose that we should bathe here, for by the time we reach the ship we should be once more hot and tired."

Madric snorted. "Be off with you, then. I will take my own counsel, and follow you anon."

When they had gone, Madric began to hurriedly shuck his clothing. The swordbelt and armor and boots went first, and the wind was deliciously cool on his bare head. The sash and tunic and stockings followed, so that he wore only a breechcloth. Then, raising his arms above his head, he threw himself headfirst into the lake.
