Prologue
The last remnants of the sun burst through the sky, the orange and red hues reflecting on the houses and people of Lesser Malling. While it may be one of the smallest villages, with less than half of the UK's population knowing about it, it certainly wasn't the quietest.
The entire village had been celebrating the Summer Solstice. Well, the day after the summer solstice. The appointed mayor had only arrived this morning. They couldn't possibly start the festival without him. The villagers spent a long time decorating houses, placing up the flags, bunting, and paintings that the primary school children had done. Now that it was getting dark, lanterns were lit up one by one to stop the village from being sucked into darkness. The mayor and his wife were pulled into an intricate dance – a dance that was taught to all of the young boys and girls; almost like a rite of passage if they wanted to continue being a part of this community. They danced around in circles, never getting sick.
The two had a daughter themselves.
While she tried dancing with them, she was much younger than the age at which the kids were taught and couldn't quite understand how to spin without getting dizzy. She fell down on the soft ground and giggled. Taking short breaths, she looked around. The lights around her spun but she didn't mind that. Fireworks erupted, but the cheers of the villagers were much louder.
Something had caught her eye.
It was different from anything she had seen.
Four men were riding on horses.
Her favourite animal. She had always seen them in the big box that was in their living room. Her mum would talk about how she used to have one. She didn't like that her mum had her favourite animal without her but now…now she could see it for herself.
Pushing herself up from the ground, she moved past the adults and children who were distracted by the dancing and fireworks and waddled her way to them.
She had never seen people that looked like them. One was red, one was white, one was black and the other…
She stopped in her tracks. The horse at the back looked funny. It wasn't fluffy like the other ones.
"Addy? Addy where are you? You're missing the fireworks!" her mum yelled over the noise. Her mother could see her child's little footsteps. Breathing a small breath of relief, she smiled when she found her daughter. "Addy what on earth…what on earth…"
Her mother had looked up, horrified at the sight.
Four men on horses.
Three of them bore a smile. A smile so threatening, she picked up her child before they could do anything. She stood there, Addy in her arms, shaking. She couldn't even call for her husband.
But luckily she didn't need to.
Her husband had called out to her, and he too saw the horrifying sight. Slowly but surely, the entire festival was taken over by these men. No one was saying anything. Children ran behind adults' legs. The fireworks had stopped shooting. The only noise was the music.
Without taking his eyes from them, the mayor yelled "Get the woman and children into the houses! NOW!"
I wouldn't do that if I were you.
None of them looked as if they had spoken.
The red man smiled harder.
They'll miss out.
