AN: In this story, Jack will be the son of Wolverine. I know that's not a very original idea for a fanfic. There are already a few stories; where that has been explored. But I really wanted to try my hand at one. Wolverine is one of, if not the coolest member of The X-MEN. That's a fact. I'm sure there have been stories where people have made Jack multiple different Mutants. But I find that the temptation to make him Wolverine, or Wolverine's son, is very strong.
It's important for everyone to know, that even though I gave this story an M rating; I'm not going to put any fowl language in it. Verbally cursing is bad enough. But when you put it in writing; it sticks around for a while. It makes it feel more permanent. This story is rated M, because whenever Wolverine's involved; you expect there to be a certain amount of stabbing people. Followed by a lot of blood. This story will most likely have intense fight scenes. A lot of violence; and maybe a little Gore. But I'll try not to go overboard.
Timeline wise, this story will start during the episode of Transformers Prime "Rock bottom"; and somewhere early on of X-MEN Evolution season 2. By the time that Jack gets to The Institute; I wanted to have The New Mutants, already be present. I also wanted Beast to be at The Institute; by the time that Jack arrived.
This way, Jack would be able to meet everyone; and The X-MEN would already know about Mystique. The Brotherhood, and Magneto. At this point, it would make it much easier for Jack to learn about Mutants. And to know who the good guys are; and who the bad guys are. It takes out a bit of the journey. But it still makes a good starting point.
I don't own Transformers Prime, or X-MEN Evolution. I also don't own the picture I used for this story. I came across it one day; and I said whatever I had to, so that I could use it. And I refuse to lie about it. Even though it is a really cool picture. So if the powers that be, want me to take it down, then I will. But please don't sue! I have no money to give.
Now, with all of that out of the way.
LET'S JUMP INTO IT!
Jack and Miko were currently resting on a pile of rocks, outside of a giant cave. They were accompanying their Guardians; who were both still inside the cave, searching for Energon. Jack was recovering from an intense illness, that he received two days prior. He had been struck with a strong fever; that seemed to just appear out of the blue. Because of this, he remained bedridden, for a day and a half. Even though he was now on the mend; he still had a slight headache. What didn't help his recuperation; was when Miko chose to be her usual, loud self.
"We're supposed to be at a rock concert. But all I see is, rock." She said. Miko wanted to go to a concert, preformed by her favorite band. Jack was sitting down; with his head resting in the palms of his hands. He was trying to relax. He had agreed to go to the concert with Miko. But her constant complaining wasn't doing anything to help his migraine.
"Miko, please, I'm begging you! Relax! The show doesn't start for another two hours. We've got plenty of time." Jack thought that would get her to not only calm down; but also, to quiet down. But he was wrong.
"Do you know how long I've waited to see Slash Monkey?"
"Uh-" Jack tried to answer.
"FOREVER! And it's their only U.S date." Her shouting was painful for Jack to listen to. But he managed to power on through it.
"There's a shock. I mean, who doesn't like obscure Bulgarian shriek metal?" He was using a sarcastic tone, of course. At this point, Bulkhead and Arcee were exiting the cave; with a scanner in hand.
"By all appearances, the mine's been stripped." Arcee said.
"But I'm getting a signal. It's faint, but it's definitely Energon." Bulkhead was confirming the readouts that he got on the scanner. This fact excited Jack and Miko. The Autobots have never had access to an Energon mine before. This could be a huge win for them.
"Doesn't make sense. This operation's been abandoned, four, maybe five years. And Decepticons never leave Energon behind." Arcee stated.
"Uh, guys!" Jack said, getting the attention of the two bots. He then pointed at the entrance of cave; indicating that Miko was running inside.
"COOL!" Miko yelled, as she went deeper inside.
"She went in? Unbelievable." Said Arcee.
"Really? Have you met her?" Jack joked. Bulkhead grew concerned; so he ran in after Miko. "It would be kinda interesting to see. You know, if it were-"
"Safe. A stripped mine can be structurally unstable, Jack." Arcee told him.
"I promise to step lightly." He responded, in a somewhat joking manner. They both knew that they had to go in to get Miko; and a part of Jack, really wanted to see the inside of the mine.
Eventually, his Guardian gave in. "Just, don't tell your mom!" After that was said, they both went after Miko and Bulkhead. Bulkhead found Miko; but then he got a ping on his scanner. He called Arcee, to tell her that he found something. But when she tried to call back; all she got was static. Apparently, the mineral deposit in the cave, was messing with their comms. Bulkhead figured that since they were already here; Ratchet would probably want a sample from inside the mine. So he equipped his mace; and began to break down pieces of the wall, to gather for study.
As Jack and Arcee continued to explore; they came across something that they didn't expect to find. They saw Starscream, on his knees, begging for mercy. All while Megatron aimed his fusion cannon at him. Megatron was going to kill Starscream; until he spotted Jack and Arcee. This was the first time that Jack has ever seen Megatron, up close and personal. When Jack looked into his eyes; he was filled with dread. Megatron turned his cannon towards them, and began shooting. Arcee pulled Jack into cover. "STAY DOWN!" She instructed Jack.
Arcee popped out her blaster; and waited for her chance to shoot back. Megatron kept firing at them, until he started shooting at a now fleeing Starscream; who was abandoning him to fight alone. Arcee managed to shoot Megatron, twice in the back; before he started to turn around. He tried to fire back. But one of her shots, hit his cannon; causing him to shoot the ceiling.
The ceiling was now coming down. But before it totally collapsed; Megatron managed to fire one last shot off. The blast went right past Arcee; and hit Jack, square in the chest. This sent him flying against a wall. "JACK!" Arcee yelled.
A large chunk of the ceiling then fell on top of Megatron. Arcee rushed to get to Jack. But by that time; the floor of the mine, had given way. There was a massive cave in; and they both fell deeper into the mine. When they reached the bottom; Jack and Arcee had become separated. Jack's body was laying motionless, against a wall.
The blast that he was hit with; left a great big hole in his chest. The damage was so bad; that it actually severed his spinal cord. He was dead. But then something extraordinary happened. Somehow, his spinal cord started to reattach, and repair itself. Then the rest of his damaged bones and muscles, also began to heal. When Jack regained consciousness; the headache that he'd been having, was just gone. As was the ringing in his ears. When he looked down at his chest; he saw his muscles and skin regrowing, right before his eyes. This caused him to scream. "AH! WHAT THE-?"
In only barely a half of a minute after that; his skin was healed, and completely repaired. The only evidence of the once hole in his chest; was that his shirt was torn in the front, from where the blast entered him. As well as in the back, from where it exited. The last thing that Jack could recollect; was Megatron shooting at him. Before feeling a brief, but intense pain in his chest. Then he woke up to see his body, somehow healing itself. He placed his hand on his chest. "How am I still alive?" He asked himself. But then he remembered that the mine caved in. He got up, and called for Arcee.
"ARCEE? ARCEE?" When she didn't answer him, he began to worry. "Oh, scrap!" He lamented. He knew that he had to find the others; so he began his search for them. While he was looking for his friends; he eventually came upon a Decepticon mining drill. "Well, that could come in handy."
Jack got on the drill; and after pushing a few buttons, it sprang to life. Then the drill started to move. "Roll out!" Jack said triumphantly. He used the drill to borrow through the rocks; and found the one person that he wasn't looking for, Megatron. The hole that he dug, was only big enough for Megatron to turn his head; and gaze upon Jack.
"I suppose, helping those less fortunate; would be completely out of the question?" Megatron inquired to Jack. Jack backed away, in fear. Helping Megatron would probably be the right thing to do. But Jack knew that he couldn't trust him. If the situation was reversed; there's no way that Megatron would lift a finger to help any of them.
"If that is the case. You might as well use your drill to finish me. I guarantee, you will never have a better opportunity than right now." Jack thought about it; but it didn't seem right to end Megatron. Not like this. "Well, what are you waiting for? Think of the glory! Seize the day! Optimus would." Megatron claimed.
"No, he wouldn't. Not like this." Jack shot back. The one thing that Jack knew for sure about Optimus; was that he would never terminate a defenseless life form. Then Jack took his drill, and was driving away.
"I will be sure to share the details of our little conversation with Optimus. The day I rip out his Spark." Megatron declared, as Jack left. Then Megatron started to dig his way out of the hole that was left for him. As Jack continued to drive; he began to smell a familiar fragrance in the air.
The smell of fruity shampoo; and a hint of Jasmine. The faint scent of pink hair dye. He would knew that scent anywhere. There was no doubt about it. That was Miko that he was smelling. He wasn't just smelling her. He could also hear echoes of rock banging on metal, in the distance. It didn't make any sense. She must have been buried underneath one of the collapsed caverns. So how was he able to smell and hear her through all that rock? It's like his senses of smell and sound, were kicked into overdrive. But at least now, he knew where to go. So he drove the drill in her direction.
Behind one of the walls that Jack knocked down; he had finally found Miko and Bulkhead. Starscream was also there. He had been knocked down by Jack's drill. Bulkhead was currently doing his best to keep the ceiling from falling on top of them. "Jack, get Miko out of here, now!" Bulkhead ordered. Jack reached out his hand towards her. Miko was now crying. She was hesitant to leave her Guardian. But ultimately, she took Jack's hand; as he helped her onto the drill.
"We can't leave Bulkhead!" She said before Jack put the drill into reverse. "Arcee will save him, won't she?" Miko asked, in a state of worry for Bulkhead.
"You and I just need to find a way out of here; before Megatron digs himself free." Jack told his friend.
"Megatron's here too?" She said in fear.
It may have taken a while; but both the kids, and their Guardians, managed to make it out of the mine, in one piece. They even made Starscream hold up the roof, in Bulkhead's place. By this time, the sun had already gone down, and came back up. Meaning that they spent all day and night, inside that mine. Only when they were finally outside; did it finally occur to Miko, that they missed the concert. That, and she was wondering what happened to Jack's shirt. "We could finish em, here and now." Arcee said in reference to Megatron and Starscream.
"Shame we didn't bring any grenades." Bulkhead responded, as he slammed his fists together.
Even though Jack felt as if he knew the answer to this question; he found himself asking it anyway. "Would Optimus finish them?"
"No. He probably wouldn't. Not like this." She answered.
"But Optimus wouldn't rescue em either, right?" Miko questioned.
"Let's go home!" Said Bulkhead.
Arcee felt bad about not being able to settle the score with two of the worst Decepticons. After she let out a sigh of defeat; she joined the others, who were already walking away. Then the two Autobots transformed into vehicle mode; and gave their charges a ride home. While they were driving down the road; Arcee decided to speak up. "By the way, Jack. Before the cave in; I saw Megatron blast you. Not a lot of Autobots would have lived through that. And there's no way a Human could have walked away from it either. So, how did you survive that?"
"I don't know. I don't know." He repeated. It was still a mystery to him; why he was still alive. "But we can talk about it more, when we get home. Because something just tells me; that I'm going to have a long conversation with my mom. And I'd like for you to be a part of it." Not telling his mom about the events of today, seems impossible. Since he was gone for a whole day; she would obviously have questions that need to be answered. He would also have to tell her about the strange things that were happening to him. Arcee accepted this, as they continued their journey home.
When they got home; June was waiting for them in the garage. They got inside; and Jack closed the garage door, so Arcee could transform without being seen. "Jackson Darby, do you have any idea what time it is? Where have you been? And what happened to your shirt?" June questioned her son. Jack couldn't predict the outcome of the conversation he was going to have. He had to tell his mom the truth; and he promised Arcee answers. But it was unknown, how they'd react.
Arcee was his partner. They have put their lives in each other's hands, on multiple occasions. He was confident that she would at least try to understand. That she would try to help him through whatever was going on with him. He trusted her. But there was no telling how his mom would take any of this. Would she be shocked? Would she be afraid?
Some part of him was worried that he'd lose her support; and that was the very last thing that he wanted. Not when he needed it the most. But obsessing about all this; wasn't doing him any good. So he bit the bullet; and started to tell her what happened in the mine.
"Mom, me and Arcee went on an Energon scouting mission with Miko and Bulkhead. We were inside a stripped mine; when we ran into Megatron and Starscream." He could see the look of worry on his mother's face. But yet, he continued with his story. "There was a battle; and as a result, the mine caved in. It collapsed, and we were buried in the rubble, for a while."
"WHAT? ARE YOU OKAY?" His mom asked. This explained what happened to Jack's shirt; and why he and Arcee were so dirty. Then she checked her son for any signs of injury.
"We all got out. Thanks to all of us working together. Everyone is okay." He tried to reassure her.
"How could you let this happen?" June scolded, as she turned her gaze towards Arcee.
"Mom, stop! It wasn't her fault. It wasn't anyone's fault. And believe it or not; the cave in wasn't even the strangest part." This got June's attention. "Something's...something's happening to me." Jack placed his hand on his chest. He was hesitant to say that much. As he didn't know how to phrase it. He didn't know what was going on; and frankly, he wondered if he even wanted the answer to that question.
"What do you mean?" June asked.
Jack walked over to his workbench. The same one that he used to do maintenance on his bicycle. He picked up a screwdriver; and turned to face both June and Arcee. It was important for them to see what he was about to do. He didn't much like the thought of what was going to happen. But he had to be sure of what happened in the cave.
He dragged the screwdriver across his chest, until a large cut appeared; and his blood started to pool out. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Arcee and June said, in unison. But in only a matter of seconds; the cut was completely healed. The two just stared in amazement at this.
Jack placed the screwdriver back on the workbench. "When the cave in was happening; Megatron shot me in the chest. It knocked me unconscious. When I woke up; I saw the damage that the blast did to me. My chest had a hole in it, that was so big; that I could actually see my muscles, and some of my bones too. But then I was healing at an unnatural rate. As the seconds went by; I saw my skin regrow over my muscles. It probably took a half, of a half of a minute. But then I was completely healed. And that's not all. There's more."
"More?" Asked Arcee.
"When I was looking for everyone; I could smell Miko's scent. And I could hear her making noises. That's how I knew where to find her and Bulkhead. We must have been separated through so much stone. But somehow, I was still able to smell and hear her. I can't explain this. But when I went into the mine; I was the same as I've always been. But when I came out, I was different. I heal faster than ever before. And now I've suddenly developed super senses. I could smell and hear everything in the mine. Just like I can now."
When Jack focused; his sense of smell, and sound, were extended. He could smell the neighbor's dog, from across the street. He could smell the breakfast that other families were having in their homes. Then there were the things that he could hear. If he concentrated, he could hear the sound of his mother's heartbeat. Or the hum of Arcee's Spark. "Mom, what's happening to me?" He asked in a desperate search for answers. Both Jack and Arcee looked towards her; with hopes that she could answer that. June knew what this meant. But she wasn't sure if it would ever happen.
"I need to make a call!" June said, as she began to walk to the door that lead to the inside of the house.
"What? I think this is more important. Who could you possibly be calling?" Jack inquired.
June turned to face him. "Your father." She said.
"Wait, what?" He said with a now shocked expression on his face. His mom then went inside to make her call in private. Leaving both her son, and Arcee, alone in the garage.
When June was inside; she pulled out her phone, and dialed some numbers. She hadn't spoken to her ex, in a while. But she was fairly certain that she knew where his latest address was. He liked to move around a lot. Maybe she could call the residence; and someone could connect her to him. Because the last time she checked; he didn't even have a cell phone.
He was kind of old school, that way. But who knows? Maybe he's changed. When her call made it through; the people at the address, told her that the man she was looking for, had a phone in his room. So they transferred her call to his room.
He wasn't there. So she had to leave a message on his machine. "Hey, it's me. Look, I know we haven't talked in a long time. But this is important. It's about Jack. Something's happening to our son. He's changing. I'm pretty sure he's like you. I know that things didn't end the best way, between us. But this is about our son. He needs to be told the truth. And we need you here, to explain things to him. Please!" June wasn't sure if he knew where she currently lived. So she gave him their address; before ending the call. She then made her way back to the garage.
Back in the garage, Jack was venting to his partner. "It doesn't make any sense, Arcee. Why would mom be calling my father? He left when I was very little. I've never even met the man. How could he explain any of this to me? And I don't know what's worse. Not knowing what's happening to me, or finding out." Arcee could see that her partner was frustrated. She wanted to comfort him. So she kneeled down; and rested her servo on his shoulder.
"Jack, I don't know what any of this means either. But it's ok. Because we'll get through this together, as a family." It made him feel good to know that she had his back.
"Thanks! That really means a lot to me."
"Anytime, partner." She responded with a smile.
When June came back; Jack started asking her questions. "Alright, mom. Why did you call dad? And how is he going to help me? I've never seen him, a day in my life. There aren't any photos of him around the house. So I don't even know what he looks like."
Then June pulled out a photo; and handed it to Jack. It was a picture of her holding Jack, when he was a baby. With a man, who had his arms draped around her. The man had black hair, and brown eyes. In the picture, he was looking down at Jack, with a smile on his face. This wasn't the look of a man who would abandon his family. Jack handed the picture back to his mom. "Mom, you told me that dad left us, when I was a baby."
"Well, that's not exactly the way it happened." She murmured.
"What do you mean? How did it happen then?" He questioned.
"Your father didn't leave us. We left him." She admitted.
"What?" He asked in surprise.
"Jack, the reason that all of these things are happening to you now; is because your father's a Mutant. And I believe that you are too."
"A what?" Asked Jack.
"What's a Mutant?" Arcee wondered.
June then explained it the best she could. "A Mutant is a Human being that is born with incredible powers. They usually manifest, around puberty; or in the teen years. I once met a man through your father. His name's Charles Xavier. He could explain it to you, better than I can."
"Why didn't you tell me any of this before?"
"Mostly, because I didn't think I had to. No one knows who will be a Mutant at birth. And not every child born of a Mutant; will themselves become a Mutant. There was a chance that it could have passed you by. Plus, if the public found out about Mutants; then they would hate and fear them. That's what people do. They fear things that they don't understand. But it didn't matter to me that your father was a Mutant. When I met him, I just wanted to be with him. I loved him. Just like I love you. Just like I will always love you." She said, as she brushed her hand against her son's cheek.
Jack backed away from her. June was a little hurt by this; but she continued to talk. "For a while, me and your father were happy. We fell in love, got married, and had you. But then, one of your father's enemies tracked him down. He tried to use us to get to your father. Your dad won the fight; but I knew we were going to be in more danger, as long as we were with him. Eventually, Charles Xavier started up his own school for Mutants. He wanted to teach them how to control there powers. He believed that being a Mutant, was a gift. He wanted to help them learn to accept what they are.
Xavier wanted your father to become a teacher at his school. Your father accepted; and asked for us to come with him. I begged him to reconsider. But he believed so strongly; that it was something that he had to do. So, with a heavy heart, I told him that I was leaving; and I was taking you with me. Your father was heartbroken; but he eventually understood.
He loved you so much. And he was willing to do anything to protect you. Even if that meant walking away. So, I told you that he left us. I couldn't risk you getting hurt because of him. I figured that if you thought he left; then you wouldn't want anything to do with him."
This was a lot to take in. "So you lied to me? And you've been lying to me, my whole life! You didn't tell me that I could be a Mutant. About how the whole world will think I'm a freak. Because of you, I don't have a good relationship with my father. Mom, I could've gotten to know dad. But because of what you did; I'll never get that time back, never."
"First of all, you are not a freak. And neither is your father. And second, you were my baby. I know that you're mad. But I could not let you get hurt. It was my job to protect you. And even though it hurt at the time. If I had to do it all over again, I would. I'm your mother; and you will always be my top priority. I love you."
Jack was still mad at her for lying to him. But he understood the reasoning behind her logic. It is a parent's responsibility to protect their child. He let out a sigh; before he asked his next question. "What's my dad's name?"
"I don't know. And neither does he. When I met him, your dad had amnesia. There were parts of his past, that were a mystery to him. He couldn't even remember his own name. But everyone called him Logan. Darby is my maiden name. When I got married, I became Mrs. Darby. Since he couldn't remember his real last name; your father kinda adopted my surname, for a time. But that was a long time ago. I'm sure he has dropped the whole Darby thing, by now."
Then June walked up to her son; and took his hands in hers. "There's something I have to know. So far, you have all the abilities of your father. But there is one last thing that he could do. Your father had the ability to generate claws, that were stored in his arms; and then shoot them out through his fists. I need you to focus. See if you can feel any claws in your arms! And if you can, concentrate on bringing them out!" She said, as she released his hands.
"Why would I want to? That sounds incredibly painful." He said.
"Jack, just try! Please!" June pleaded.
He let out a sigh of defeat; before he did as she asked. He started to focus; and five seconds later, he could feel something moving through his arms. Then, on both of his hands; three huge bone claws bursted through the spaces between his knuckles. Blood was oozing out from where the claws popped out; until his knuckles were covered in blood. Jack was right. That hurt very much.
"Just like your father." June said.
Jack could feel something more. It was like their was something extra coming out. Then a shiny liquid was spreading over his claws. When the liquid completely covered his claws, it then hardened. His claws were now metal; and their edges had super sharp blades.
"Your father couldn't do that." His mom said in surprise.
After practicing a few times; Jack gained complete control over his claws, and the liquid metal that covered them. Today has been full of surprises. First, Jack and Arcee survive a cave in. Then they learn the truth about Jack's father. With the biggest shock of all; being that Jack found out that he's a Mutant.
June told Jack and Arcee, everything that she knew about Logan. Everything that he was willing to share with her, at the time, anyway. Apparently, a long time ago, Logan was captured; and Adamantium was forcibly bonded to his entire skeleton. Those events also managed to wipe his memories.
Jack and Arcee asked what Adamantium was; and she told them that it was an indestructible metal. Jack thought of how painful, and sick it would have been for someone to do that to his dad. Later in the day, June got a call from Jack's dad. He said that he got her message; and that he would be their by tomorrow. All they could do now, is wait.
The next day, Jack, his mom, and Arcee, in motorcycle form; were all in the garage. Then a man on a red motorcycle, with flames painted on the sides; drove up their driveway. He stopped his bike. Turned off his engine. Got up, and removed his helmet.
Underneath the helmet, was the same man in the photo. It was Jack's father. He was wearing blue jeans, a black T-shirt; and a brown jacket over top of it. He had the beginnings of a little stubble, on his face. He walked over to Jack. "Let me look at you!" He said. He looked Jack, up and down. Then he placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's been a while." He said, with the start of a smile. He couldn't believe he was seeing his son, all grown up. He scooped Jack up into a hug. When the hug ended, June spoke up.
"Jack, this is your father, Logan." She introduced him.
Logan turned to face June. "Hey, June. It's good to see ya." He said.
"Hello, Logan. It's nice to see you too." Jack could tell that his parents were trying to be pleasant. But it was clear that there were still some unresolved things, between the two of them. He decided to diffuse the tense situation.
"Nice bike!" Jack said, referring to Logan's motorcycle.
"Thanks! Yours too." Logan mentioned, in reference to Arcee. In truth, Logan was more interested in bikes; that had a bit more muscle. Something like a Harley, or a Chopper.
"Thanks! Her name's Arcee." Jack clarified. He figured it was ok to tell him that much; so long as he didn't blow the secret.
"Ah, so you named her?" Asked Logan.
"Something like that." Jack responded.
The three of them went inside the house; before they started talking about what to do next. They sat down in the living room. Jack and his mom, sat on the couch. While Logan sat in the chair, across from them. When they were all comfortable, they began to talk. "So, based on what your mom's told me; it sounds like you might be a Mutant. If you don't mind me asking. What is it that you can do, exactly?"
Jack wasn't too eager to answer that. He was really hoping that he didn't have to show him. Because he only popped his claws out a few times, now. He wasn't used to the pain, yet. Luckily, that's when his mom stepped in. "I told you on the phone; that Jack was like you. I didn't just mean that he was a Mutant. I meant specifically you. He can do everything that you can."
"You're sure?" Logan asked.
June felt insulted by that query. She knew what she saw. "Oh gee, let me think! Maybe it's the fact that when he came home yesterday, his senses of smell and sound were heightened. Or maybe it was him healing faster than he ever has before; right in front of my very eyes. Logan, I saw the claws. He has claws, just like you." She said that last part, in a serious tone.
"Ah, a chip off the old block, huh?" Logan said, while he brushed off the first part of June's sarcastic tone. He could see that this whole ordeal was upsetting Jack. So he did his best to rectify that. "Well, the good news is that there is a place you can go; with people who can help you. Your mom probably told you about The Xavier Institute. It's a school for Mutants. And now, I'm thinking that maybe it would be a good idea if I took you with me, when I go back there."
"No! Absolutely not. It's out of the question. You can't take him with you. You'd just be putting him in more danger. Plus, Jack's whole life is in Jasper. You're not taking my son!" June proclaimed. Letting Jack help the Autobots, is one thing. More often than not, the kids were protected from any danger; and she knew she could trust Arcee to keep him safe. But it felt like sending Jack to a Mutant school; was just asking for trouble. When the world finds out about Mutants; their going to be met with hate and hostilities. It felt like she would be throwing Jack into the thick of it.
"I understand your reasoning, June. But he's our son! At the Institute, there are people who can help him control his powers. People who can help him accept what he is. If he gets control now; then he won't accidentally hurt someone, in the future. Also, I was hoping that this could be a chance for me and him, to get to know each other. I haven't seen him since he was a baby. If I could only have a day; or even just an hour with him. All I want, is for you to let me get to know my son."
June took a look between her son, and Logan. What he was asking for, wasn't unreasonable. Jack has seen trouble before; and it would be good for him to make peace with everything. She didn't like hurting Logan. She never did. She took a heavy breath, before speaking again. "It's not that I'm disputing anything you've said. But neither of us have even bothered to asked what Jack wants." They both looked to Jack; putting him on the spot.
"Well, I do want to learn how to control my new abilities."
"And the Institute is the best place for you to do that." Logan added.
"But what about school? What about the people in Jasper? What about my friends?"
"You can transfer schools; if you're that worried about it. You'll make new friends, at The Institute. And you could always come back here, every now and then. Just spend one day at The Institute! And then we can come up with a plan that best suits you, and your mom." Logan reasoned.
The more Jack thought about it; the more it made sense. A place where he could learn control. A place where he would be surrounded by people like him. It was also a chance for him to know his dad. "Alright! I'll do it. But I want at least a day; to say goodbye to my friends. And to explain things to them."
Logan was happy to see that he came around. But he was a little worried about Jack telling his friends. He said that most normal people, wouldn't accept Mutants. But Jack told him that his friends weren't like that. So, it was settled. Jack would be given a day to say goodbye; and the following day after that, he and his mom would head over to The Institute. There was no way that June was going to let Jack stay at a strange new place; without first checking it out.
Some time later, Jack was at the Autobot base. He had explained everything to them. With the exception of Arcee, none of them knew about the relationship between Jack and his father; or that Jack was a Mutant. They didn't even know what a Mutant was; until he went into further detail.
Then Raf and Miko showed up; and Jack took them aside, to talk to them. He told them everything that happened in the mine. He told them about him discovering that he was a Mutant. Which also meant him having to explain what a Mutant was. Raf was surprised to hear this; as was Miko. But she was more curious, than anything else. Jack told her about his powers; but she still asked if she could see them in action. Jack took a breath, before he lifted up his right hand; and popped out his claws. He winced, as he placed a cut on his other hand; and showed them how quickly he healed.
"Whoa! That's so cool! Can you heal from anything? How sharp are your claws? What are they made of? Do they hurt when they come out?" Miko asked question after question.
"Yeah. Every time. But I think I'm getting used to it." Jack said, in reference to the pain. He then winced, as he retracted his claws. "Anyway, there's this school for Mutants, in upstate New York. I'm supposed to go there tomorrow; and hopefully, that's where I'll learn more about my powers."
"How long will you be gone?" Raf asked.
"I don't know, buddy!" Jack looked at Raf, in the same way you would look at a little brother.
"Can I go with you? Just to see what it's like." Miko said.
"Miko!" Jack said her name, like he was surprised at her.
"What? You basically told me that you're going to a school for superheroes. Who wouldn't want to see that?"
"Miko, I'm not going there for fun. I'm going because there are things about myself, that I didn't know. Things that I want to learn. It's also an opportunity to get to know my dad. I finally have the chance to find something out about him. Look, the point is, I don't know what to expect. So I can't take you there, not now. Maybe after I get situated." Miko walked away, in a huff. Jack approached Arcee. Although he wasn't taking Miko; there was one person that he wanted with him.
"Arcee, will you come with me?"
"What?" She responded.
"To The Xavier Institute. Will you come with me?"
"Jack, I don't know. My place is here. What if Team Prime needs me? I can't just up and leave."
"Miko thinks it's all fun and games. But we both know, it's more than that. That's why I'm not taking her. If you're worried about the others needing you; then you can always Ground Bridge back. You don't even have to stay for that long. Not if you don't want to. But I'm going into uncharted territory. And it would do me a world of good; if my partner was there, watching my back. We are family, aren't we? Please, Arcee!"
It was hard to refuse that. Arcee acknowledged that they were partners. They relied on one another. But what made them family; was that they were always there for each other. Even when they sometimes didn't want them to be. Arcee relented. "When do we leave?" She asked. This made Jack excited.
By the next day; Jack had said goodbye to his friends. Him, his mom, and Arcee; were all currently at home. June had packed a bag for him; and placed it in her car. She got in the car. Started up the engine, and drove off. Jack followed closely behind, on Arcee. It would take them a while to get to their destination.
Xavier Institute, Bayville
In the town of Bayville; there was a mansion, that rested near the edge of a cliff. This was the home of Professor Charles Xavier. He had converted it into a school. It was now a sort of halfway house, exclusively for Mutants. It was sealed off from the general public, by walls, and a gate. On one of the walls, there was a plaque that read "Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters." When Jack and his mom got to The Institute, they waited for the gate to open; and then they drove through. Logan was eagerly waiting for Jack and June, at the steps of the mansion. He was joined by a few of the Mutants.
June was the first one to pull up, in her car. She came to a stop. Got out, and removed Jack's bag from the car. The Mutants that were huddled around Logan; were Bobby Drake, Kitty Pryde, Scott Summers, Jean Gray, and Sam Guthrie. They had all been brought up to speed, on the situation. All of them were curious; and brimming with questions. "I can't believe it! You, have a kid? You, of all people?" Bobby said, with a shocked expression.
Logan didn't really like how he phrased that. But he guessed that the reaction they had to the news, couldn't be helped. He never talked about Jack. Either because there wouldn't have been any point. Or because it would have been too painful to talk about the son you're not allowed to see. "Well, tell us! What's he like?" Jean asked.
"Is he a nice guy?" Sam wondered.
"Is he cool?" Asked Scott.
"Is he as rough around the edges, as you?" Bobby worried.
"But more importantly, is he cute?" Kitty questioned, with hope. The young Mutants stared at her for a moment. She did remember who's kid they were talking about, right? Logan could hear the near by hum of a motorcycle engine. He turned to see someone riding a familiar blue and pink motorcycle. This made him smile.
"Why don't you ask him, yourself?" Logan gestured to the guy on the motorcycle. Jack rolled up. Got off of Arcee, and took off his helmet. Kitty wasn't wrong. Jack was pretty cute. At least, she thought so; and perhaps, so too, did most of the world. Jack looked just like any other kid. It was hard to believe that someone so normal looking; was related to Wolverine. Maybe it was because Logan kind of had a reputation with the kids at The Institute. They usually saw him as a tough drill instructor. Jack made his way over to everyone.
"Everyone, this is my son, Jack Darby. Jack, this is Sam Guthrie. Bobby Drake. Kitty Pryde. Scott Summers, and Jean Gray." Logan introduced everyone. They all tried to be welcoming, and polite to Jack.
"Nice to meet you! That's a nice bike!" Scott said. In all honesty, they were all impressed with Jack's motorcycle. Sure, the pink parts of the paint job, weren't exactly manly. But the body, and style; still made for quite the awesome bike. Scott extended his hand to Jack.
"Thanks! I get that a lot. She's kind of my pride and joy." Jack shook Scott's hand.
"So like, what can you do? We all have a special gift. What's yours?" Kitty asked. Jack wasn't sure how they'd react; and he didn't want anyone to be frightened by his abilities.
"I...I don't want to freak anybody out." Jack told her.
"It's ok, Jack. You are among friends, here." Jean assured him. He hesitated for only a moment; before he popped out his claws.
"Guess we should've figured. Since he is Wolverine's kid, and all." Bobby said offhandedly.
"Wolverine?" Jack inquired.
"Yeah, we all have codenames, here. Didn't Logan tell you that?" Scott asked. They then explained what all they could do; and then shared their codenames with him. Scott could shoot optic blasts from his eyes. Kitty phases through solid objects. Bobby can generate, and manipulate ice. Sam flies through the air, and pulverizes anything in his path. Lastly, Jean has the power of telekinesis, and telepathy. Meaning, that she can move objects with her mind; as well as hear, and manipulate the thoughts of other people. Their codenames were Cyclops. Shadowcat. Iceman, and Cannonball.
Ironically, Jean was the only one that didn't have a codename. She was just Jean Gray. "So, what are we going to call him? "Wolverine Jr. ?" Sam joked.
"Nah, I say we go with something more along the lines of, "Kid Wolverine." Bobby chuckled. After they were done having a laugh; Jack, his mom, and Logan, all went inside. They then came upon a bald man, in a wheelchair; and a lady with dark skin, white hair, and blue eyes. "Hello, Charles!" June greeted. She had only met Charles once or twice, before.
"Hello, June! It's nice to see you again! And this must be Jack. My name is Charles Xavier. But you may call me Professor Xavier. Or, "Professor X." The man in the wheelchair said. He then introduced the woman with white hair as, Ororo Munroe. Also known as "Storm." Charles was a telepath; and a rather gifted one, at that. Storm, like her name suggests; had the ability to control the weather. Charles shook Jack's hand. "So tell me, Jack! When did you first acquire your powers?" The Professor asked.
"About four days ago, I think. I remember that I was recovering from a massive fever; that lasted for almost two days, prior to that."
The Professor placed a hand against his chin, in thought. "Interesting." Charles murmured.
"Interesting?" Jack repeated Charles's phrasing.
"Every mutation is different. And not every mutation manifests itself in the same way. It's possible that the illness you suffered beforehand, served a purpose. It may have been conditioning you. Preparing your body for the powers that you would soon have." Professor Xavier has studied countless stages of mutation. This led him to the discovery of a certain genome. He dubbed this genome "The X-Gene." He then explained that every Human being has the potential for an X-Gene. But only Mutants carry an active one.
Mutations can often trigger, due to a traumatic event. Jack guessed that almost dying in a cave in; would count as a traumatic event. Xavier asked Ororo to give Jack a tour of The Institute; before he informed June, that it would be alright for her to leave him in their care. She wasn't ready to just leave her son with them.
No matter how well intentioned they were; she didn't know these people. But Jack assured her that he would be fine. She agreed to go; but not before Logan offered to show her around The Institute. June gave Jack his bag; and kissed him on the cheek, before following Logan outside.
Ororo took Jack upstairs; where he bumped into a boy with blue furr. Three fingers on each hand. Two toes on each foot. Pointy ears, and a long tail, with a spaded tip. "WHOA!" Jack yelled. He wasn't expecting to run into someone like that. The boy's feelings were a little hurt by Jack's reaction. But he knew it wasn't something that could be helped. Growing up like he did; the boy's gotten used to how others viewed him.
"Here, is this better?" The boy asked, in a German accent; as he pressed a button on his watch. In a second; he took the form of a regular caucasian boy.
"Jack, this is Kurt Wagner. Also known as "Nightcrawler." Ororo said. "As you can see; some mutations manifest themselves physically. Most Mutants look just like everyone else. But for others; it's harder to hide who they are. Kurt has had to live, knowing that he's different. But that is why we're all here. To make peace with who we truly are." Jack was told that Kurt used an Image Inducer, to hide from the public. That was sad to know. Before he came there; Jack thought that he had it pretty rough. But it wasn't fair that Kurt had to hide from everyone; simply because of how he looked.
"If it makes you feel any better; I can look like this all the time. You never have to see me, the other way." Kurt said. Jack felt his heart breaking for Kurt.
"No! This is your home. You should be allowed to feel comfortable here. Besides, I know it's not right to judge someone based on their appearances. It's ok." Said Jack, with a look of sincerity. What he said, made Kurt happy. He deactivated his Image Inducer; and shook Jack's hand. Kurt's hand felt strange, in Jack's. But when Jack took a look at him; Kurt had a big friendly smile on his face. Despite what he looked like; Jack could just tell that Kurt was a nice, and friendly person. Which only made Jack like him more.
"If you think I look weird. Just wait until you meet Mr. McCoy!" Kurt said, while also being a little vague.
Ororo had taken Jack to the sub basement. It was a massive, high tech area, underneath the mansion. It housed multiple rooms. Jack was starting to see why they had politely asked his mom to leave. This wasn't the kind of thing that just anybody should see. Especially, Jack's mother. He was led to a lab, where he saw a huge blue furred man; that had fangs, and wore nothing but a pair of black trunks. This was Hank McCoy. AKA, "Beast." He almost resembled Bigfoot. He was a teacher at The Institute. Meeting Nightcrawler, felt like nothing, compared to this.
They were soon joined by Professor X, and Logan. June had left; with Logan giving his word, that he would keep Jack safe. They were preforming tests, to determine the extent of Jack's new powers. His healing was on par with Logan's. But they were surprised to find that Jack could coat his claws, in some kind of liquid metal. There were a few tests that they ran on his claws. They tested how strong they were; by seeing if he could cut through other objects. Beast took a sample of the metal, while it was in liquid form; to run an analysis on it.
While he was doing that; they had Jack sit down on a table, so they could get an X-ray of his body. They were aware that he could move, and manipulate the metal. So, they asked Jack if he could move the metal to any other part of his body. Jack had never tried that before. He pictured it moving all around him. Everyone who was watching the X-rays; saw his skeleton be completely covered by metal. Hank had examined, and tested the sample, at a molecular level. He turned to face everyone, with the results.
"Well, I know one thing for sure. Whatever this metal is, it's not Adamantium. Not really."
"Well, what is it?" Asked Jack.
"I don't really know. Some kind of organic, liquid, metallic compound. It seems to be secreted from your body. It's not as strong as Adamantium. But it's still a very durable metal, in its hardened state. And it's incredibly sharp. Based on the tests we ran; I'd say that the metal is stronger than most materials. Your claws were able to cut through steel, easy enough." Hank said, in reference to the object they had Jack cut through. The object had huge claw marks, that ran right through it. "Maybe it's a good thing, it's not Adamantium." Beast murmured.
"Why's that?" Jack questioned.
"Oh, because Adamantium's highly toxic. It may be an indestructible metal. But it was never meant to be integrated into the Human nervous system. In fact, I'd be willing to venture that the only reason that your father didn't die of Adamantium poisoning, years ago; is because his healing factor is so advanced, that it's actually able to keep the infection at bay." Hank could see the concerned look that Jack had; so he tried to put him at ease.
"But you shouldn't have to worry about that. As I said, this metal is not Adamantium. And more to the point; it's something that occurs naturally, from inside your body. So, I doubt it's any threat to you. And even if it was; your healing factor would more than likely, protect you."
This was all very fascinating. But it wasn't what concerned Jack, the most. Something else was currently occupying his thoughts. Jack looked at Logan. He had no idea that he was living with something that would have killed a normal person.
"You've been living with poison in your body, all this time?" Jack said to Logan.
"Ah, don't worry about it! It's like the good Doctor said. I heal to quickly, for it to matter." Logan was only slightly joking. He was fighting off the infection; but Hank wasn't a Doctor. That was the joke. Logan went into more detail about his healing factor. It didn't just heal any injury he had. It also made him immune to diseases.
In addition to that; it severely slowed down his aging process. Logan wasn't able to accurately tell Jack how old he was. But he could tell him; that he was decades older than he looked. Meaning, that most of the people he knew from way back when; were either dead, or really old.
That thought scared Jack, a little. Professor X then took Jack on a tour of the rest of the sub basement. He showed him The Danger Room. That was the name of their training room. It was designed to be an obstacle course. The goal, was to put the students in a potentially dangerous situation; that they may one day face. It was the student's job to work as a team; to overcome these obstacles. Jack's thoughts on The Danger Room, was that it was intense.
Then The Professor showed Jack, Cerebro. It was a giant room, with a headset, and control panels. The headset was designed to amplify The Professor's telepathy. Enabling him to track other Mutants, anywhere on the planet. This was all very impressive. But the one thing that Jack loved the most about this tour; was when he went to The Hanger. In The Hanger, Jack saw a big, beautiful, black jet. This was "The X-Jet." Or, as some students took to calling it "The Blackbird." It was faster. It could outfly, out maneuver, and out fight any other aircraft.
The Professor then explained the true purpose of his school. He said that he wanted to show the world that Mutants were nothing to fear. That they could coexist with Humans. But he also told Jack, that they had enemies. He told him all about "The Brotherhood", and "Mystique." Then he told him, that years ago; he met a man named Eric Lensherr. He was a very powerful Mutant; who had the ability to control, and manipulate metal, as well as magnetic waves. Once upon a time, Charles and him were friends. But then, their paths diverged.
Eric believed that Humanity would never accept Mutants. So, he decided to fight back. To him, it was just a matter of who was going to throw the first punch. Eric was now calling himself "Magneto." Charles had gotten to the point where he explained to Jack; that they were going to change people's opinions on Mutants, through their actions.
He was putting together a team of Mutant heroes. A team that he called "X-Men." He then asked Jack, if he would join them. What Professor Xavier was doing, was admirable. His cause was noble. It was the kind of nobility; that Jack had only seen, since Optimus Prime.
He was honored to be asked to join. But he felt as if he had to remind The Professor; that he was only going to be there for a short time. His main concern, was on mastering his powers. He and Logan agreed that he would stay for one day; just to see if he was interested, or not. It wasn't nearly enough time to make a life-changing decision. But regardless, The Professor asked Jack to use the time that he had with them, to consider his options. Jack was told that if he was going to stay; then he would have to share a room with someone.
Before anything else, he went outside, to check on Arcee. One of the students directed him to the garage. When he and his partner, got to the garage; they saw a big black van. A red sports car, with white racing stripes; and a few other vehicles. Jack made sure they were alone; before he started to talk to Arcee. "Well, on the bright side. At least you'll have roommates too." He joked.
"Jack, how long do you think we can stay here? Team Prime might need me soon. Plus, with being around this many people; the odds of someone discovering me, increase significantly." Arcee said.
"I know. But it's just for one day. Until we get all the details sorted out. I'm not leaving Team Prime. Neither of us are. If it comes down to it; then you can Ground Bridge back to base. Just make sure that no one sees you. And as far as your secret goes. I don't think that you have anything to worry about. These people have a lot of secrets too.
I'm not saying that we should tell them about the Autobots. But I am saying that, I think they could handle it. We might be able to trust them. But I know that, that's too big of a decision for me to make, on my own. So, if you want; we can talk more about that, tomorrow."
Jack had left Arcee in the garage, to go back inside. Apparently, he had been roomed with Scott. Scott was one of Xavier's first students. He had seniority. It didn't make a lot of sense for him to have to share his room. But he was a good sport about it. Maybe Logan, or The Professor, thought that he would be a good influence on Jack.
As they were making their way towards the room; they came across a Goth looking girl. She had brown hair, with a white streak in the front. She almost reminded Jack of Miko. Scott began the introductions. "Ah, Rogue! Have you met our newest resident?"
Jack extended his hand, in friendship, to her. "Hi! My name's Jack Darby. I'm Logan's kid. It's nice to meet you!" Rogue was surprised to find out that Logan had a kid. But she was even more surprised to find out; that nobody had yet told him about her, or her powers. At the time, she didn't have her gloves on; and the last thing she wanted, was to seem rude. But she just backed away from Jack's extended hand; and walked right past him. Jack looked confused. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No. It's not your fault, or her's. That's just Rogue. She has the power to absorb the abilities of anyone she touches, through skin contact. For Humans, that means their skills, and memories. But for Mutants; that also means their powers. The worst part is, if she touches someone for long enough; that person could enter a coma-like state, or maybe worse. That person could probably die. She wasn't wearing her gloves. That's why she didn't shake your hand. She can never get close to anyone. Not like you and I can."
Jack felt bad for her. This was supposed to be a school for the gifted. But her powers sounded like a curse, to him. Compared to her, he had it relatively easy. She would never be able to kiss anyone. Or be held by the person that she loves the most. She wouldn't even be able to do the simplest of things; like holding someone's hand. The next time that Jack saw her; he would be sure to apologize for the bad interaction they just had.
Scott led him to their room; and Jack finally got a chance to unpack his bag. He placed his clothes into an empty dresser. Then he took a seat at the bed, that was across the room, from Scott's. He had never shared a room with anyone before. This would be an adjustment. But Scott seemed like a cool guy. So hopefully, there wouldn't be any trouble. Then Jack laid down on the bed. He was thinking about his healing factor. On the plus side, he would never have to go to the hospital, because of an injury. Also, he would never get sick again.
However, if his healing factor was anything like his dad's; then he could wind up outliving everyone he cares about. That is not something that he would ever wish for. But It had been a long day; and he wanted to get some rest.
AN: Sorry that this chapter is so long. I was just trying to get everything done. Also, I wanted to tell everyone that I gave Jack the powers of Jimmy Hudson Jr. , of Earth 1610.
I just love the character of Jimmy Hudson Jr. I figured that if I was going to make Jack the son of Wolverine; that I would base his powers off of Jimmy's. Jack can do everything that Jimmy can do, in the comics; before he got a hold of his current Symbiote. Also, just so you know; I will not be giving Jack a Symbiote, in this story. I'd rather him just be the son of Wolverine.
Obviously, based on the summary; you can all guess that Logan and June are going to get back together. Also, it might be a while before I update this story. I'm going to try to get back to my other stories, "To be a Hero" , and "From Super to Ultra."
I thought about what pairing I wanted to create, with Jack, in mind. I could have gone the traditional route, and used Miko. Or maybe I could've made him and Kitty, a thing. But I came to realize, that I didn't want to take away anyone's romantic partner, in "X-Men Evolution." But then I remembered that Rogue was single, all throughout the series. Plus, it'd be cute! Her and Jack, would be good together. They both have, what the other one needs.
And like I always say. If you didn't like something; then that's all you have to say. Don't go out of your way, to be a jerk, in the reviews! Be honest, but fair!
STAY AWESOME!
