Loud banging sounded on the front door. Lily got to her feet, while James drew his wand, pointing it at the door. "Who's there?" he called.
"It is I, Remus John Lupin," came Remus' voice. "Also known as Moony, one of the four makers of the Marauder's Map, married to Nymphadora Tonks. You, James, the secret keeper of this house, told me to come in an emergency."
James pulled open the door, while Lily put her wand away with a thrill of nerves. They hadn't seen anyone from the Order in person since the break in at Azkaban. What had happened?
Remus nearly fell across the threshold and into the house. His hair was windswept, his face white, but Lily could see his eyes sparkling. "It's a boy!" He shouted, spreading out his arms. "We named him after Dora's father! Ted!"
"Tonks had the baby?" Lily cried, feeling herself smile wider than she had in weeks.
"Yes! Yes, she's had the baby! A boy!"
"Congratulations, mate!" James grinned, clapping Remus on the back. "Another mini Marauder to cause tons of trouble and turn McGonagall's hair gray!"
"James!" Lily reproached him, but she was laughing and so was Remus. She ran over to give her friend a hug. Remus looked years younger than he usually did.
"This calls for a celebration," said James, clapping his hands together, "I'll get the wine..."
"No, thanks, Prongs," said Remus, still beaming widely. "I need to get back soon. I already stopped by Shell Cottage to tell them the news. We made Harry Godfather," he added.
"Wow, really?" James asked, looking rather stunned. "That's great!"
Lily laughed. "It must be a Marauder tradition to pick reckless people for Godfather's."
"Well, we are Gryffindor's," Remus teased back.
They did manage to persuade him to have one drink with them before he left, promising to bring pictures the next time he saw them.
"It's about time we had some good news," James said, grinning.
"This is the best!" said Lily. "I don't think I've ever seen Remus so happy."
"And he thought he would never have kids," James crowed.
Lily laughed. "He's going to make a great father."
"He sure is," James agreed. "And Harry a Godfather!"
"I wonder how he took it?"
"Knowing Harry, he was probably really surprised, humbled, and honored about it."
"As opposed to Sirius?" Lily asked, raising an eyebrow.
James laughed. "I thought he was going to have a panic attack!"
Lily laughed too, and set about getting dinner set on the table. Remus may have left, but the celebration had only begun as far as the Potter's were concerned.
"Welcome to a special broadcast of Potterwatch. I'm your host, River, coming to you at this unprecedented time with exciting news on Harry Potter. We have learned that this very morning, Harry Potter and his friends Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley successfully broke into Gringotts..."
"NO WAY!"
"Shut up, James! Listen!"
"...unable to determine what exactly it is the Golden Trio were after. However, we are able to confirm on the word of a large number of eyewitnesses that they escaped the bank on the back of a dragon."
"WHAT?!"
"Listen, Lily!"
"...clearly, the trio are making a habit of doing the impossible. Unsurprisingly, the goblins of Gringotts and the others involved are reluctant to answer questions, and that's an understatement. After all, they did just lose their All Time Never-Had-a-Theft streak. We do not know what was taken or why, but we at Potterwatch will keep you informed of further developments on the Man with the Lightning Scar and the break-in at Gringotts. In the meantime, keep each other safe, keep faith, and good night... I mean afternoon."
"They broke into Gringotts." James said, emotionlessly.
"Dragons," Lily gasped.
"They broke into Gringotts!" James shouted, pumping his fist in the air. "This must be why Harry insisted on talking to Griphook."
"Dragons," Lily moaned.
"First the Ministry, then Gringotts, what's next? Hogwarts? The Mission certainly calls for them to break into a lot of places!"
Lily rose to her feet in fury. "And all this pales in comparison to the fact that they escaped riding on a bloody dragon!" She screamed at him.
"Lily, calm down," James said, holding his hands up in a placating gesture. "I'm sure they'll be fine. The dragon probably doesn't even know..."
"How could they be so stupid?!" Lily ranted, pacing up and down the room. "Break into Gringotts; they should have known something would go wrong! Why in the world do they put themselves into situations that make them escape on dragons! How is it that they've survived this long?! You'd think they were trying to get themselves killed! They could have stayed at Shell Cottage where they were safe, but nooo! They decide maybe it'll be fun to leave relative safety to go break into Gringotts and escape on a dragon!"
"Are you done?" James asked, looking amused as she stopped to take a breath.
"No," she snapped at him. But she was.
"Good," he said, sitting down. "I would like to point out that they are fine. This is a good thing. Even not knowing what they were after, the fact that Harry Potter (the Chosen One, remember?) is clearly still fighting and managed to get into and out of an impregnable bank is sure to boost morale. The dragon just makes it more impressive."
"What if it eats them? How's that for a boost of morale?"
"They're smart," James insisted. "They'll know to get off before it lands."
Lily sighed, forcing herself to calm down. James was right. There was nothing to be concerned about. Yet.
If you're wondering why James and Lily weren't named godparents, I always thought that part of the reason Lupin made Harry godfather wasn't just because he loved and respected him, but because he was absolutely convinced that if anyone could survive the war, it would be Harry. I think after James and Lily 'died' the first time, Lupin (Mr. Worst-Case-Scenario himself) would be very aware that there's always the chance they would again, while I don't think Harry dying even occurred to him as a possibility.
