Chapter 11
I was back in the room I had stayed in before. My apartment burned down with Drake's. It was unnerving that Drake lived right under me. And I guess we will never find the intruder. I was laying on my stomach while Holly was applying bandages to my back. She already had poured disinfectant on my back. I was gripping the sheets of the bed. Thinking was all I could do till she was done. Holly wouldn't let anyone in here while she wrapped my back. Well except for Lucy. Lucy's back had been burned as bad as mine.
"How long have you had these scars?" Holly asked, wrapping my back. I was gritting my teeth, still gripping the bed. She was probably talking about my whip scars from when I worked for Mr. Brill. I shrugged, wincing in the process. I heard her sigh.
"Finished."
I sat up, pulling my white tank top over my back. I was tired. Holly got up.
"I'm going to go do Lucy's back now. Will you be alright?" She asked. I nodded, waving her off. She walked out the door. And went up to the attic. I sat on the bed. I wanted to lay down but it would hurt my back to do so. I heard Lucy shout out a curse from upstairs. Holly must have poured on the disinfectant. I got up, walking upstairs. Lucy was laying on her stomach the same way I did. Holly was rubbing her back with a wet rag. Lucy looked up at me.
"I don't know how you dealt with this stuff for a week." She gritted. I shrugged with a smile. I guess I was kind of use to it.
"Oh hush now." Holly told her, getting ready to pour it once more. "Im going to do it one more time, then I'll wrap your back." She poured it on Lucy's back. Lucy yelled once more. I winced, leaving the room before I heard anymore curses. I went downstairs, finding Lockwood standing by the foot of the stairs. I grinned at him. He smiled.
"Glad to see your better," he chuckled, "how's Lucy?" I went into the kitchen to get a cup of water. I wrote on the thinking cloth as well.
"She's fine, just not use to the disinfectant as I am." I wrote. Lockwood chuckled.
"Sounds like it." He said, glancing above him. "The fire department came and dropped off some stuff that survived in the fire." Lockwood left and came back with a duffel bag in his arms. I put the cup of water down. He put the duffel bag on the table. I opened it and found a book and some clothes. How did these survive? I pulled out the book. It was a photo album. I looked through the bag some more. There was some of Lucy's stuff. Including the skull. Why would the fire department give us the skull? I pulled the skull out, inspecting it. I felt a little whisp of the ghost but no more. Lockwood stared at it as well.
"Did the skull show up at all last night?" He asked. I stared at him, confused.
"I mean, did you sense him?" He said, trying to make sense. I thought for a moment. I never touched the skull last night, and there were no other ghosts other than the ghost lady. Then I thought of the voice that woke Lucy and I. Was that him? Did I hear him? I shook my head, letting the thought wash off me like water rolling off a duck's back. I'll ask Lucy what she heard. I shrugged at Lockwood. He sighed. Holly walked in.
"I don't think this will be the last time I treat you guys." She sighed, exhausted. Lucy must have took the energy out of her. I wrote on the table to Holly.
"No promises." I wrote, smiling. Holly chuckled. I walked out and went upstairs to Lucy's room. Lucy was sitting on her bed, a scowl on her mug. A chuckle slipped out of my lips.
"Oh, this is funny?" She asked, sarcastically. I could see a small smile on her face. I sat beside her. I had grabbed my notebook on the way up here. I still had the skull as well. I held it out to her. Her eyes lit up.
"How..?"
"The fire department came and dropped off some stuff." I wrote.
"So he survived another blast." She chuckled. I stared at her, confused, but let it past.
"Did you hear a voice last night when we woke up?" I wrote. She stared at the writing, surprised.
"You heard it too?" She exclaimed. I nodded my head. She just stared at me like I was someone else.
"You heard the voice." She asked. I nodded again. She let out a surprised laugh.
"That was the skull!" She exclaimed. I stared at her in alarm. "I know his voice anywhere. It was him." I just stared at her like she was crazy. Then she stopped and looked at me.
"You heard him." She sat there, in thought. "And somehow saw the lady." She stared at me. "Did you hear the lady's screeching?" I thought for a moment. I felt like I heard her screeches, but I didn't hear them like Lucy. Lucy had clutched her ears when the ghost screeched. I didn't. My head started to hurt. I was thinking to much. I wrote everything I could and gave it to Lucy, rubbing my head while she read it.
"We should tell everyone else. George might be able to help us solve this." I nodded. I have solved many mysteries, but I was the biggest mystery of them all.
