She was not beautiful, nor clever. She would never possess the effervescent charm of her younger sisters, never hoped to receive the praise in company that her elder sisters owned.

It was not supposed to be of consequence to Mary.

She did not care to dance, had little time for the notion of romance. She had her books, her talents at the pianoforte.

That was enough. She told herself it was, for what other choice did she have?

"What indeed?" she asked aloud, watching rain pour past her window, but there were no longer any sisters at home to reply.
