As Brianna masterfully guided our flight through the Sinnoh skies, the familiar surroundings of Sandgem Town gradually came into view. This quaint town, situated in the southern reaches of Sinnoh, offered a picturesque landscape. To the south, a pristine beach glistened under the sun's warm embrace, framed by lush greenery and rolling hills. Brianna initiated another round of deceleration, but this time, I was prepared, I wasn't about to fall for her tricks again. I hollered out, "Nope! Not falling for that one again!".
In response, she simply shrugged, followed by a series of cryptic hand signals that left me utterly perplexed. The enigma unraveled swiftly as we plummeted earthward at an utterly ludicrous velocity, only to ascend with the same breathtaking speed, showcasing the Pidgeot's impressive acrobatic skills.
My initial burst of what I'll kindly refer to as "manly war cries" eventually melted into shared laughter with Brianna. As we rode the Pidgeot's exhilarating roller-coaster-like flight, my spirits soared, and the thrill of our antics replaced my earlier apprehension. The whirlwind of aerial gymnastics eventually subsided into a graceful glide, and we alighted smoothly in a designated flight zone near Sandgem's Pokémon Center.
Regaining my composure, I was greeted by Brianna's deft fingers undoing the fastenings. That swift freedom was wholly unwelcome as I found myself stumbling to the ground. Of course, followed by her laughter.
Summoning a modicum of dignity, I hauled myself up and fixed her a stern look. "You'll be thrilled to know that my dream of becoming a Flying-type master has been officially grounded."
Brianna brushed off my melodrama with a dismissive wave, tending to her avian companions with casual grace. "Oh, come on. It wasn't all that bad," she chimed, her tone teasing. "You seemed to be having a grand time by the end."
"Not all that bad?" I shot back incredulously. "I clung on like a Cubone to its mother's skull while you cackled like a madwoman."
A mischievous spark danced in her eyes as she countered, "But you didn't fall, did you?" She emphasized her point with a nonchalant wave. "Now, hush. I need to secure a room at the Pokémon Center, and you've got a rendezvous with a walking encyclopedia."
In an act of mature response, I bid farewell to Brianna's departing figure with a one-finger salute.
As Brianna made her way towards the Pokémon Center, I decided to release Juno. She ruffled her feathers and stretched gracefully as she took in her surroundings.
"Starly?" Juno inquired, her bright eyes scanning the unfamiliar town.
"Yep, we made it. Welcome to Sandgem, Juno," I replied warmly, extending my arm for her to perch on.
"Starly Star," she chirped contentedly as she initially perched on my arm but then decided to climb up to my shoulder. She used her wing to gesture further into the town.
I chuckled and nodded, "Sure thing, girl. Let's explore a bit before we head to the lab."
With Juno perched comfortably on my shoulder, her wings occasionally stretching, we embarked on a leisurely stroll toward the heart of Sandgem Town. The town, nestled between the lush forests and the sparkling sea, exuded a unique charm that seamlessly blended the rustic aesthetics of fishing and logging towns.
Sandgem Town's architecture was a harmonious fusion of traditional and modern elements. Wooden cottages, adorned with colorful, weathered facades, lined the cobblestone streets, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Each cottage boasted vibrant window boxes overflowing with blooming flowers, and some even featured intricate wood carvings of Pokémon decorating their eaves.
As we strolled through the bustling streets, the enticing aroma of freshly caught seafood wafted from local food vendors, enticing passersby with the promise of delectable meals. I couldn't resist the temptation and stopped at one of the stalls to purchase some smoked Magikarp, both for myself and Juno, before continuing our little adventure.
As the sun gracefully descended, it cast a warm, golden hue across the horizon, enveloping Sandgem Town in its welcoming glow. The townsfolk continued their daily routines, exchanging friendly greetings with smiles and waves, while the ambient sounds of Pokémon cries and the melodious chirping of Starly in the background added to the town's lively atmosphere.
Our journey through this picturesque town eventually led us to the grand entrance of the Pokémon Research Center. Pausing for a moment to ensure I presented myself well, I glanced at my reflection in the polished windows before confidently knocking on the door. To my surprise, the door swung open swiftly, revealing a warm and welcoming figure stationed at the front desk.
"Welcome, dear," the woman inside greeted me with a kind smile and a demeanor that instantly put me at ease.
Clearing my throat, I introduced myself confidently, "Hello, ma'am. I'm Lucas from Solaceon, and this is my partner, Juno." Juno responded with a cheerful chirp, her friendly greeting echoing her amiable disposition. "We've come to see Professor Rowan; we've been accepted into his tutoring program."
The woman's eyes brightened with genuine enthusiasm as she replied, "Well, that's splendid, honey. We've been expecting you. My name is Mary. Please, have a seat while I fetch the professor."
Following Mary's suggestion, I eased into a chair, Juno finding her perch on my shoulder with practiced ease. I let myself rest comfortably for a while as I pondered my next moves. The prospect of joining the tutoring program held a mixture of excitement and nervousness in my heart.
"All right, Juno," I said to catch my partner's attention. "We need to be on our best behavior, alright?" She puffed her chest in indignation. "I know, I know you're always great," I pacified as I stroked her feathers. "I'm just a bit nervous. The professor is our best bet for a strong start. We can pick his brain on so many things. Evolution, Aura, Energy-typing, those portals I spoke to you about. Heck, we might even find a new friend to join us." I sighed, my thoughts drifting to my origins.
Before I could delve deeper into my thoughts, Mary's departure was as swift as her return, and this time, she was accompanied by a man with fair skin, blue eyes, and spiky white hair, complete with sideburns and a mustache. He wore a gray jacket over a white shirt paired with a light blue vest, a gray tie, dark teal pants, and gray shoes. It could be none other than the distinguished presence of Professor Rowan himself.
"Ah, it's wonderful to see you, young man," Rowan greeted warmly as he offered his hand. "I hope you had a pleasant journey."
"It was quite the experience, sir," I replied as I shook the man's firm hand.
"A memorable one, I hope. Now, why don't you come along as I take you on a tour of our establishment?" Rowan's invitation was gracious.
"Let's start with the front. We have a refectory at the start following the reception. Two floors," Professor Rowan explained as he pointed to some stairs. "On the first floor, on the left, we have our labs dedicated to energy and environments. To our right are our facilities for the study of Pokémon. On the second, we have our technological departments on the left and our offices and library to the right."
The tour was brief, given that the research center, while spacious, was not bustling with activity. Just a couple of researchers engrossed in their studies, a few around some humming machinery, others in front of computers surely slaving away at academia, and some interacting with Pokémon both inside and outside in the research grounds. The feeling of being in a research center once more was quite nostalgic. "At the end of each hall, we have facilities for emergencies and bathrooms. And behind those glass doors is our very own Pokémon sanctuary that stretches several acres."
As we navigated the corridors, Rowan's voice resonated through the halls. "You might have noticed the absence of other students," he remarked, and I nodded in confirmation. "That's due to your unique circumstances and your prior experience with Belle. It would be a disservice to house you in my standard classes when you already possess a comprehensive grasp of the curriculum. Instead, for this week, you'll be my assistant, stepping into the role usually filled by my aide, who's currently on vacation."
My surprise must have shown, as the professor let out a small, amused snort, allowing me time to process his offer, which exceeded my expectations. "I'm ready for some hands-on experience, sir," I proclaimed.
"Smashing," Rowan acknowledged with an approving nod. "But for today, let's call it a wrap. Why don't you make your way to the inn just down the road? I'm sure the journey has left you somewhat fatigued. They're expecting your arrival. Simply mention that I sent you. And remember, be back here at 8 a.m. sharp tomorrow."
I nodded, thanked the professor, and took my leave. Outside, the day was still bright, and I couldn't help but notice how different Sandgem felt from the quieter Solaceon. The buzz of people and Pokémon, the salty tang of the sea breeze, and the excitement of being on a new adventure filled the air.
Juno, my ever-present companion, took the opportunity to stretch her wings and flew around for a bit, her graceful flight a testament to her vigor.
Following Professor Rowan's directions, I soon arrived at the inn. A friendly innkeeper showed me to a simple yet comforting room. The furnishings were unpretentious but inviting, with a touch of rustic charm. Earthy green and warm beige hues adorned the walls, creating a soothing and natural ambiance. The wooden floor was covered in a soft, plush carpet, providing a cozy surface for both humans and Pokémon.
The room was thoughtfully designed for Pokémon companions as well. There were smaller, comfortable beds for Pokémon to rest on, perches for flying Pokémon like Juno and cozy-looking boxes for those who preferred dens or burrows.
As I settled into the room, I decided it was time to check in with home. Sitting on the edge of one of the beds, I gently called Juno over. She hopped onto my lap, and I began to stroke her feathers, finding solace in the familiar sensation.
Taking out my Pokégear, I dialed the familiar number. The anticipation mounted as the phone rang, and Belle's voice flowed through the receiver.
"Hey, Luke! How's everything on your end?" Belle's voice was warm.
A grin found its way to my lips, her voice an anchor in this new journey. "Hey, Belle! We just arrived in Sandgem. The journey was eventful, though Brianna's a bit…" I caught my near slip just in time "Much, you know."
A chuckle escaped Belle's lips, resonating through the line. "I'm glad you're having a good time. And most importantly, are you and Juno doing okay?"
"Absolutely," I replied, my voice brimming with unwavering assurance. "Juno's been soaking in the sights, and she even found our new friend, a little Budew we found in the cold."
Belle's excitement was palpable, infectious even through the phone. "Oh, that's wonderful! It's great that you rescued the little one. I'm sure you'll be great partners."
Pa's voice joined the conversation, his steady presence on the line. "It's good to hear that you're settling in well. Remember, this is an opportunity to learn and grow."
I nodded even though Pa couldn't see it. "Absolutely, Pa."
As the moon ascended in the sky, its soft, silvery glow bathed the room in a gentle radiance, and our conversation persisted. Eventually, as the night deepened, Sandgem Town's night sky greeted me with its serene beauty. The stars twinkled overhead, though not as numerous as in Solaceon. It was a clear, starry night, and the sight of the constellations brought a sense of peace and wonder. With a sense of finality, I decided to end the night.
"I'll make sure to keep you both updated on everything," I reassured my family.
Belle's tone softened, carrying a gentle reassurance. "We're just a call away, Luke. Remember, we're here for you, cheering you on from home."
The following day dawned with me standing before Professor Rowan, who had assembled an array of diverse tools upon a sturdy workbench. "Alright, young man," the professor began, his tone carrying a mixture of authority and anticipation. "Today, we will delve into the intricacies of data collection for Pokémon. Fortunately, your visit serves a dual purpose, as your loyal companion is integral to one of our ongoing studies."
With practiced ease, I went through Juno's examination, and each step was executed with precision. Upon completing the data recording, the professor's reassuring smile washed over me.
"Name: Juno," I began, the tablet diligently transcribing my words. "Encounter: Solaceon Town. Class: Aves, belonging to the order of Birds. Egg group: Flying. Family: Staraptor line. Species: Starly. Sex: Female. Type: Normal/Flying. Abilities: Keen Eye, possibly Reckless. Weight: 2.7 kg. Size: 0.8 m. Nature: Jolly."
As my voice flowed, I started with Juno's physical attributes and gradually shifted focus to her nature, all while noting her growth in size and weight since her previous examination.
"Well done, Lucas. You've demonstrated a commendable grasp of the procedure. As today was earmarked for your evaluation, there's some time available before we continue. I'm at your disposal to address any inquiries you might have about Pokémon analysis before we delve into your written evaluation."
I seized the opportunity and carefully placed the Poké Ball on an available examination table, releasing the Budew I had recently caught. With a flash of light, it materialized before us, its curiosity evident in the way it tilted its bud-like head. "Hey there, little one," I addressed it with a gentle smile, lowering myself to its eye level.
Glancing at Professor Rowan, I conceded, "I'll be honest, Professor Rowan, my expertise tends to sway more toward mammalian-like Pokémon. When it comes to our leafy companions, though, I could certainly benefit from some guidance."
The professor addressed me once more, his tone filled with warmth and encouragement. "Let's start with the basics, Lucas. Always ensure a safe and respectful approach, especially with Pokémon who may have inherent dangers, like those with poisonous attributes."
"Hello there," Professor Rowan addressed the Budew with a soothing tone. "I'm Rowan, and I'm here to ensure you're in good health." His gentle approach was met with a tilt of the Budew's head, a display of curiosity and a silent inquiry about this newcomer. "Establishing trust with Pokémon that are unfamiliar with human presence is pivotal," he continued, "especially when it concerns species like Budew, which bear inherent risks with their toxic thorns."
The Budew, a tiny bud Pokémon, turned its gaze toward me, its expression filled with curiosity and a hint of cautious interest. After assuring that he was someone to be trusted Budew nodded and examined the doctor before nodding and inching closer, the tension in its tiny form slowly dissipating. The professor smiled at the sight and slowly approached the baby Pokemon.
He gingerly pushed against the vines atop the Budew's head and said. "The tensile strength of the top vines is weak. This Pokemon has recently sprouted and is in the process of developing its spores as you can see through the gaps. Ah and see these structures here. These are pistils, this little one is female. Size is 10 cm and weight of 500g. It's to be expected of one her age. No signs of any protruding thorns along her body, at least none discernible to the naked eye." With that said he picked up a red device laid on the table that I instantly recognized as a Pokedex.
After a swift scan, a thoughtful hum escaped the professor's lips before he passed the device into my eager hands. The feeling brought me back to my childhood. It had the same feel as a DS Lite but was made of sleeker and sturdier material. Painted in stylish red with a Poké Ball emblazoned on its outer shell alongside a series of lenses. As my gaze shifted to the screen, a sense of marvel washed over me as the intricate details he had just mentioned were now vividly displayed before me. True to his assessment, Budew possessed the Natural Cure ability instead of Poison Point.
The professor let me marvel at the Pokedex for a while before addressing us once more. "Overall the bud is in excellent shape, she appears to be developing nicely. Given her attributes, I suspect her line was bred by locals to aid in natural remedies." He gently retrieved the Pokedex as he beckoned me to follow.
"We'll let my colleagues tend to your Pokémon while we review your written evaluation," he informed me. I nodded, casting a reassuring glance at Juno and the Budew. With a parting smile and a promise to return soon, I followed the professor to a designated office where Mary, the secretary, had thoughtfully arranged writing materials and a bundle of papers for the upcoming evaluation.
"All right, young man," the professor began as he ushered me to take a seat. "These are standard evaluations for multiple levels of Pokemon knowledge, including Trainer, Breeder, and Researcher exams. There's no pressure here; consider them more of a curiosity check to gauge your knowledge."
With a determined nod, I sat down and started with the research aide evaluation, figuring I'd go from hardest to easiest. Once I had the test in hand, I couldn't help but give a tired sigh. I thought I had finally escaped standardized testing, the bane of academics. But I wasn't about to let it deter me. With a self-motivating slap to my cheeks, I gathered my focus and dove into the exam.
"All right, let's see…" I mumbled as I read the first question, a sense of dread washing over me. "During a severe thunderstorm, an overcharged Electrike releases a Discharge attack into a power grid using its lightning rod ability. Calculate the energy transfer involved in this event. Given data:
The voltage of the overcharged Voltorb's Discharge attack is 1,000,000 volts.
The current generated by the Discharge attack is 30,000 amperes.
The duration of the Discharge attack is 0.1 seconds.
Assume the power grid resistance is 5 ohms.
Calculate the energy transfer from the overcharged Elektrike's Discharge attack to the power grid during the thunderstorm. Show all your work and provide the final answer in joules…
Well, fuck me." I groaned, squaring my shoulders, and began working through the calculations.
After the grueling Pokémon researcher exam, the rest of the day felt like a breeze as I quickly finished the remaining tasks and handed them to Professor Rowan. Grading my exams, he granted me the afternoon off. Taking advantage of this newfound freedom, I decided to head to the nearby beach, located to the south of town. In my previous life, I had grown up near the coast, and the sound of the ocean waves always brought me comfort.
As I neared the beach, I decided to let Budew join us in our leisurely stroll along the shore. We covered a bit of the beach, letting the waves wash over my feet. Budew nestled comfortably in my arms, and Juno soared gracefully on the ocean breeze nearby. It was a simple pleasure, the feel of the sand beneath my feet, the salty scent of the ocean breeze, and the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore.
A short stroll later, I found a perfectly shaped rock to sit upon, settling in as I watched my two companions play in the sand. Observing the sight of Budew's stubby legs chasing after Juno in a game of tag brought a genuine smile to my face.
Once Budew was tuckered out from their playful game, I picked it up and nestled it between my arms as we sat by the water's edge, gazing at the horizon. Turning to my newest companion, I felt a need to share my thoughts and emotions. "You know, I never really did get the opportunity to talk to you with all that's been going on."
The little Budew turned its attention to me, patiently waiting for me to continue. I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of my words as I began to speak, laying bare my innermost worries before I spoke, "You see, I'm really, really far from home. Impossibly far away. And I'm searching for a way to return back home." My words hung in the air, a heavy admission of the daunting task ahead. I paused, letting out a sigh, allowing myself a moment to collect my emotions and lay bare my inner worries. "But every plan I can currently think of requires me to be strong enough to stand up against literal legends."
The task before me was nothing short of monumental. I needed to find Pokémon capable of traveling across universes, a feat I knew was possible with the creation trio but was uncertain about in other regions. I damn wish i knew what they were. Another thing for studying here. Fuck me, How could I possibly face literal gods?
As I grappled with these thoughts, Juno sensed my turmoil. She took the moment to climb onto my shoulder as I had seen parrots do in my previous life. Once there she rubbed her head against me, her feathers soft and reassuring.
"Thanks girl" I giggled as her feathers tickled me, lifting my spirit. "To that end, I'm going to head into some really dangerous scenarios and very stupidly risky missions. That's why I need partners that are up to the challenge of facing gods themselves."
I let the weight of my words hang in the air, allowing the gravity of my declaration to sink in. It was a life filled with peril, and I wanted to ensure that Budew understood the choice before her. "Now, this doesn't mean you can't choose to stay with me if you don't want to follow me into danger. My current family lives on a nice, sunny farm, and I'm sure you'd be content to live there if this isn't the life you want. But, if you're willing, I would like you to accompany me and reach these heights, come hell or worse. I promise I won't let you down. So, what do you say? Are you willing to follow us on this foolhardy mission?"
The Budew regarded me with a surprising level of seriousness for a Pokémon so small. It was a testament to the intelligence Pokémon displayed when a bond was formed with a trainer. Her gaze was unwavering as she stared into my eyes.
"To mark this special partnership, I'd like to bestow upon you a name. What do you think?" I chuckled, witnessing our newest partner's bouncing delight at the prospect of her very own name.
"All right, all right," I said, waiting for her to settle before continuing. "I was serious about being strong enough to face legends. And for that reason, I have the perfect name just for you, a name that embodies the virtues of ancient gods who watched over certain aspects of life. Juno here" Juno chirped with pride at being mentioned, her wings fluffing up slightly. "is named after the goddess of love, marriage, and family. She embodies force, energy, and youthfulness."
"Starly!" Juno proudly proclaimed, her eyes gleaming with affection as she acknowledged the deep meaning behind her name.
"I gave her the name as I want her to be the heart of our team," I explained fondly, my gaze shifting to my dear Starly. "Now, for you, I bestow the name of Minerva, after the goddess of wisdom, justice, law, and victory. She embodies arts, trade, and strategy. These are virtues I have no doubt you will champion with determination and grace."
The newly named Minerva nodded fervently, her eyes shining with understanding and eagerness as she looked at Juno and then back at me as if promising to carry the legacy of her name with honor. The Budew nodded fervently at my choice of name and babbled excitedly at Juno, who was singing a congratulatory tune. I savored the moment and decided to watch the sunset with Juno and my newest partner, Minnie.
