This takes place in a hospital waiting room.
"Is it okay if I sit here?"
A young woman, uninterested in the young man talking to her, licks her finger before flipping the page of the magazine she was looking at and then moves her purse off the seat for him to sit down.
"Thank you. The old man that sat right next to me smelled like cigarettes and bourbon. You look like you smell a little better than that."
"Wow. There's a pick up line I haven't heard before." Again, she flips the page of her magazine pretending to be interested in it when she's kind of having fun being snarky with this stranger.
The young man chuckles "my name is Marty Byrde, by the way." He sticks his right hand out
"And I…am not interested."
"Good. That makes two of us."
She rolls her eyes as she closes her magazine and looks around the room feeling impatient.
"You do, by the way…"
She looks at her watch and heads to the reception.
Marty watches her closely but can't make out what they're talking about. She turns to come back and he looks away not wanting to be caught. She sighs as she sits back down.
"If you didn't hear me, you do…smell better than that man…So whats your name?"
"Oh Jesus Christ, this guy doesn't stop." She sighs and finally makes eye contact with him and is instantly mesmerized by how handsome he is. His slim but toned physique which would eventually make her stomach full of butterflies. His piercing blue eyes which would soon make her lose her train of thought. But right now, she can't let that happen. She has to keep being cynical so this guy doesn't win. "My name? My name is uh…Jenny."
Marty smiles in satisfaction that he might finally be getting somewhere with this beautiful woman. "Oh well nice to meet you uh…Jenny."
The young woman rolls her eyes at Marty's weird attempt at humor.
"Do you want to know what you smell like?"
"I thought you'd never ask."
"Vanilla and coconut." Marty grins. "Happens to be my two favorite scents"
"Are you gay?" She bluntly asks this stranger.
"You're funny."
"I'm not laughing." She crosses her legs and folds her arms, waiting for an answer.
Marty clears his throat, "well no…I'm not. But I think you alre-"
"Really? Huh. Are you sure? Because first off, you aren't interested in this-" she motions her body before making eye contact with him. "And because everything from your perfect appearance to knowing exactly what kind of shampoo and perfume I use, I'm just making what I feel like is a good assumption." She tilts her head, shrugs and smiles slightly.
"Okay. Alright." Marty grins once again not really knowing what to say next.
After a while of silence, Marty decides to get the conversation going again, "So what are you here for?"
She looks at him for a moment, gets an idea, then looks straight ahead, "neeewww heart." She picks a piece of lint off her skirt before making eye contact with him again. She gives him a you asked grin, revealing for the first time, her dimples.
"Oh wow. Really? I'm so sorry. You would never even know looking at you."
She crosses her arms again, "yeah? And what should a person who needs a heart transplant look like to you?"
"I don't know. I'm sorry. That just has to be so scary."
"Scary. Yeah." She clears her throat. "You?"
"Oh uh…my best friend was in a horrible accident. He's literally fighting for his life. It's terrible because he doesn't have any family or friends except me. I won't leave his side. I just can't."
"But you're out here talking to me. Hitting on me."
"Definitely wasn't hitting on you so you can get that out of your head. And especially since there's like a 98% chance you could die on the table, why would I hit on you?. I'm smarter than I look."
"Wow. You're funny. You're being snarky back."
"I'm not laughing uh…Jenny."
"Okay stop…" she checks her watch again.
"Waiting for the doctor to come out with your new heart?"
"Uh yeah…shouldn't you check on your friend?"
"He's in a medically induced coma and I just needed a break so..." after a moment of no response from this girl, he decides to ask her more about her heart transplant. "So do you mind me asking-" just then, Marty is cut off by a doctor coming out. Jenny's face lights up
"Wendy? Hey babe! I'm sorry it took me so long. You ready?"
"Yes!" Wendy hops up from her seat. She greets him and gives him a lingering kiss. She doesn't normally do that but she has an audience this time.
"Wendy." Marty smirks.
"Who's this?"
"Oh just Marty. He's practicing his best pick up lines on me." She replies, still in her boyfriends embrace. "There's this boy he likes and…"
Her boyfriend laughs a little at his girlfriends constant comedic jokes.
"Hey. I'm Doctor Steven Hallberg." He extends his arm but Marty leaves him hanging.
Marty makes eye contact with Wendy who shrugs and flashes him her dimples again .
Steven laughs slightly as he moves his hand and puts it around Wendy's waist. "You ready?"
"Yes." They turn to leave "bye Marty byrde."
"Bye uh…Jenny."
Her boyfriend looks at her and laughs and shakes his head. They start walking away and he looks back and gives Marty a wink.
"Be careful with her. She has a bad heart." Steven laughs again. "Fucking prick." Marty says under his breath. He hears Wendy and Steven talk as they walk away.
"What was that all about?"
"Oh just having fun. He was an easy target. Plus, you were taking forever and I was getting bored."
They both giggle as the sliding doors closed behind them.
