Chapter 2: Morning After/Revelation
Flashback
September 19, 1992
The next morning Sara was woken up by the smell of breakfast, but before she could get out of bed and investigate, the bedroom door opened all the way and Grissom, who was now wearing a robe over a t-shirt and sweatpants, was carrying a tray that had breakfast on it, a glass of juice, a flower, and her pager.
They smiled at one another as she sat up, then as he was placing the tray down over her lap, he spoke. "You should answer your pager, it's been going off a lot. I don't think you want your friends to send a search party."
She replied warmly. "I'll just reassure them that I was in the best hands possible."
He shyly smiled, making her smile a little wider, then he told her. "You can use the phone and I'll give you privacy, enjoy your breakfast."
"Ok, thank you."
He nodded before turning and walking out of the room while she called her friends and started eating.
About 15 minutes later Sara was just finishing up with her food when Grissom came back into the room, and after sharing another smile, he cleared his throat before speaking. "Sara, I uh, I just want you to know that I don't normally do this."
She smirked, already understanding at what he was hinting at, as she placed her empty glass on the tray. "What, have breakfast in bed?"
He shook his head. "Yes, no…I mean…"
Sara cuts him off with a smile as she removed the tray from her lap and placed it on the nightstand. "Relax, I get what you mean, and I think deep down I knew that." They gave each other a warm look before she took a breath and finished as she looked down at her hands. "And despite what you might think of me, I don't do this either." Then she lifted her head up and smirked again. "And no, I'm not talking about breakfast in bed."
He walked closer to the bed, keeping his eyes on her just in case he saw rejection in them, but when he saw none, he sat down on the side of the bed and slowly took her hand before whispering. "I never would have thought that of you."
After feeling more relieved from his words than she let on, she cupped his cheek and continued. "And while some people might view what happened last night as wrong, it wasn't to me. In fact, it meant more to me than I can ever possibly explain." He couldn't help but smile at her words, and she couldn't help but smile in return, but then she finished with sigh. "However, I also understand the reality of this. We are in two different places in our lives right now, and I'm not expecting anything more."
It hurt to say those last words, and hearing it wasn't a party either, but both of them knew it had to be this way, at least for now.
Grissom nodded in understanding before he shyly asks. "But someday, when everything is a little more settled, and if we ever cross paths again…"
Sara cuts him off immediately with her eyes sparkling. "Then you better be prepared on spending the rest of your life with me because I'm not letting you go a second time."
Seeing his eyes glow made Sara's heart flutter, happy he was on board with that idea, and it only fluttered more when he moved her hand up to his lips and kissed her knuckles softly before he whispered. "To someday then."
She whispered in return as she moved her thumb up and down his cheek. "To someday."
After a long look into each other's eyes, which were starting to turn heated, he whispered again. "Remember what you said last night about letting my heart speak?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, it's telling me something right now."
"Oh, and what would that be?"
Feeling a little shaky, he whispered one more time. "It really wants me to kiss you."
She slowly smiled as she started to lean towards him. "Well, we can't have a broken heart on our hands, can we?"
He shook his head as he moved closer to her. "No, we really…"
His words get cut off when their lips touched, which once that happened, it wasn't just one kiss and things took a passionate turn pretty quickly, and even though this time was a little more rushed than last night, they still felt that deep connection.
Afterward, they cuddled and talked, which they knew that the more they knew one another it would be harder to walk away, but they didn't care right now, they were only living one moment at a time.
Later that night
After Grissom dropped Sara off at the hotel around lunch time, she spent the afternoon with her friends, which of course they wanted details, but Sara wasn't ready to talk about it, it felt too sacred to share, and they respected her decision.
When evening rolled around the girls were getting ready to go out for dinner, but her friends could tell Sara was distracted and a little sadder, so Quinn sighed as she handed her the keys to the rented vehicle. "Here, go to him."
Sara looked at the keys before looking up at her friend in shock. "What!?"
She smiled and shook her head. "Don't 'what' me, your mind is on him, which has been pretty much the whole day, and it's our last night here, so go."
She took a breath. "But…"
Quinn cuts her off as she took Sara's hand and placed the keys in the palm of it. "We are roommates, you know. It isn't like this was our last night to hang out with one another."
Sara smiled with a nod, that was true, and the same went with Ashley, but then she looked over at Jo, who still lived in Boston. "Jo…"
But Jo cuts her off with a smile. "Go, we'll have other weekends, and hey, the holidays are coming up, maybe we can meet up again then."
Sara took a moment before standing up from the bed and asking. "You are all sure?"
The girls all nodded with chuckles before Ashley spoke. "Get out of here."
Sara nodded with a smile as she started walking towards the door, but then she stopped and looked at Quinn. "Thank you, I know that you didn't ap…"
Her blond hair friend cuts her off before she could finish. "I just didn't want to see you get hurt, it wasn't about the guy and how much older he is, it was how he treated you is what I was concerned about. But if you trust him, then I'll learn to trust too."
After one more nod and smile, Sara walked out of the room so she could go see Grissom, ignoring the warning signs from her brain telling her it wasn't a good idea because she'll only be hurting more later. But once again, she didn't care, she couldn't stand not seeing him at least one more time before she left.
When she made it to the front door to his townhouse, she took a breath and knocked on it, and when the door opened a few seconds later a shocked looking Grissom was standing there. "Sara, what are you doing here?"
Sara gave him a little smile. "I uh, I couldn't leave tomorrow without at least seeing your face one more time." She wasn't going to invite herself in, and when he didn't make a move to let her in, she took a breath and continued. "So, yeah. I uh, I'll let you get back to your evening."
As she turned to walk away, Grissom cleared his throat and asked. "Would you like to come in?"
She turned back around with a smile as her eyes were glowing. "I thought you would never ask."
He moved to the side to let her in, which immediately she smelt dinner the moment she stepped in, but before she could say something about it, he had closed the door, cupped her cheek and kissed her.
At first, she was shocked and had tensed a little, making him start to pull back, but before his lips could part from hers completely, she started kissing him in return, bringing his lips back to her full force as they deepened it a few times.
They slowed down their kissing and pulled back before placing their foreheads together a few moments later, and after a few seconds, he whispered. "I'm sorry. I just wanted that kiss to be spontaneous, I hope I didn't…"
Sara cuts him off with a smile. "You didn't feel me pushing you away, did you? So don't worry about it, it was a nice surprise."
"I'm glad."
They slowly pull back fully, and he cleared his throat before speaking again. "I uh, I have dinner cooking, and there is enough for you, if you want it?"
Sara nodded with a smile. "I would be happy to join you."
His face lit up before asking. "Your drink choice?"
"Wine, if you have it."
He nodded before turning around and walking towards the kitchen while she took her jacket off and hung it up on the front door hanger before following him in into the kitchen.
As he was pouring the wine, he noticed she looked a little more dressed-up than the last few times he's seen her, but didn't say anything, and instead asked. "So, how did you get past the girls?"
Sara chuckled as she sat down on the barstool. "It was actually them, they practically pushed me out the door." He sets her wine glass down in front of her as she continued more shyly this time. "They uh, they could tell I was a little distracted, so they probably thought I wouldn't be much company to them."
Getting the hint, Grissom nodded with a smile. "Well, that was nice of them, I hope I get to meet them one day...well formally."
Sara nodded with her eyes sparkling. "Yeah, maybe one day we can make that happen."
He held out his wine glass and toasted. "To good friends."
She held out hers and whispered. "And to someday."
They clinked their glasses together while they remained having eye contact as they were taking a sip of their drinks.
Once dinner was done cooking and they had finished eating and done the dishes, they change their drink to water and headed for the couch, cuddling the minute they could, wanting to enjoy this time together for as long as possible.
After a few minutes, while his eyes were closed as he ran a hand up and down back, he feels Sara's fingers on a button of his shirt, and after the first two came undone, he opened his eyes and placed his hand on top of hers to stop her before he whispered. "I have to work tonight."
Getting the meaning, she nodded as she whispered back. "It's ok."
"Are you sure?"
She moved his hand away and finished undoing his shirt until it was opened before she moved so she was straddling his waist with a smile as she looked down at him. "I am." She then leaned down and started to kiss his chest, making him close his eyes at the feel of her lips on his skin, before moving her lips up his chest to his ear and whispered. "But just because we don't have all night, we still have enough time to take it slow." Then she kissed his ear and finished. "That is if you can control yourself."
One more kiss to his ear and she pulled back, while he slowly opened his eyes and raised an eyebrow before asking softly. "Is that a challenge, Ms. Sidle?"
She gave him one of her 'Sara' smiles before replying. "You could take it as one, Dr. Grissom."
He cupped her cheek and replied. "Challenge accepted."
He brought her close to him so they could kiss, and after a few deep ones, they pulled back and he whispered one more thing. "But first, I think we need to be somewhere a little more comfortable."
She nodded in agreement as she was getting up, then after he got up, he slipped his fingers through hers and walked them towards his bedroom.
When they got there, they discarded the top layers of their clothing, leaving them only in their undergarments before they started kissing again as he walked them towards his bed, laying her down gently once they got there before pulling back so he could just look at her.
As she looked up at him, he had an unreadable look on his face, so she asked in concern. "What's wrong?"
Grissom shook his head, fighting the emotions that was going through him, before speaking softly. "I just wanted to take a moment and memorize you. I want to remember everything."
She moved up a little so she could cup his cheek and whispered in return. "Me too."
He took her hand from his cheek, kissed it before whispering with his eyes glistening a little. "You are so beautiful. I have told you that, right?"
She nodded, trying to keep her tears at bay. "You have."
He then cupped her cheek. "Good, because you are the most beautiful woman I have ever met." Then his lips touched hers, and even though there was a need at times that wanted to make them speed things along, they didn't, they took their time, cementing every kiss, every touch, every moment really, into memory, not knowing if this time was all they had.
They did get to cuddle afterwards, but it was shorter than they would have liked, and when Sara came out of the bathroom fully clothed, Grissom, who was just in his sweatpants, held out a picture with a smile. "Here."
Sara smiled as she took the picture and looked at it. "What's this for? When was it taken?"
"To answer your second question first, I was in my last year in college, and as for your first question, you said you wanted to at least see my face before you left.
Well, now you can look at it anytime you want." Then he shyly whispered, but there was also a vulnerability in his tone. "And maybe it is to remind you that someone out there is waiting for you."
Sara immediately looked up from the picture and cupped his cheek with her left hand. "I'll never forget that, and I hope you don't forget that either."
He shook his head and placed his hand on top of hers. "Never would I ever forget about you."
Sara started to sniffle as she shook her head. "This is a lot harder than I thought it would be."
He nodded in agreement before wrapping his arms around her and whispered in her ear. "It's only for now."
She took a breath and nodded. "Someday."
They held one another a little bit longer before they slowly pulled away, then he slipped his fingers through hers and walked them towards his front door, and as they got there, he asked. "You want to have breakfast before you leave?"
Sara shook her, barely hanging onto her tears. "I can't, it would only make things harder."
He cupped her cheek with an understanding look. "Ok."
It was a few seconds of eye contact before they leaned toward one another and kissed softly, putting their foreheads together and whispering at the same time once they pulled back. "Goodbye for now."
When they pulled back fully, they gave each other one last look before she took her jacket from the hanger, opened the door and walked out, closing it behind her.
Once the door clicked shut, she turned to the door and placed her hand on it with tears finally coming out, feeling like walking away from him was the hardest thing she ever had to do, while on the other side, Grissom mirrored her exact actions and feelings before they took a breath and walked away from it, trying to get back to the lives they knew before that life changing encounter.
End of Flashback
Present
October 12, 1998
After going to a deli to get something to go so they could eat, they met at the park near the play area, then after sitting down, she started to dig into her food while he just sat there and stared at her.
A few minutes went by she could no longer stand it, so she turns her head to look at him and he was giving her that look that made her feel special all over with a smile on his face, so she shook her head with a laugh. "What, do I have something on my face?"
He shook his head with a sigh, then moved a little closer to her, but kept his hands to himself before whispering. "God Sara, you're so beautiful, you seem to get more beautiful each time I see you. I've missed seeing that look in your eyes."
Despite not hearing this for the first time, she gets a shy look on her face before asking softly after cleaning her throat. "Oh yeah, what else do you miss?"
He smiled wider as he moved his hand up to her cheek but doesn't touch it just yet. "Your smile, your laugh." This time he does touch her cheek, both feeling the electric current between them as he continued. "The feel of your skin." He ran his thumb over her lips as he leaned in closer to her. "The feel of your lips against mine, and I especially miss…" Their lips were about to touch when they heard a little girl shout out.
"Daddy!"
Flashback
Late December, 1992
After shift, and instead of going to the bar or right to his townhouse, he took his crossword puzzle to the park and sat in his usual place on the bench.
But no matter how hard he tried, the puzzle couldn't keep his thoughts away from the one thing, or should he say, the one person who had consumed them the last three months .It didn't matter if he tried to keep himself distracted, whether it is was with work or his hobbies, he just couldn't shake her away.
Deep down he knew the moment his eyes had connected with the brown eyed beauty, his life was forever changed, and that was even before he knew what it felt like to kiss her, to hold her in his arms, to touch her skin….
He mentally shook his head with a sigh, knowing this can't go on, because despite what was said or felt between them, he knew better than anyone that life has a way of keeping people apart, so he wasn't sure if it was in the cards that he'll ever see her again, which makes him even sadder because he knew there will never be anybody else for him.
He mentally shook his head again while looking back down at his crossword puzzle, then a moment later he felt a presence to the side of him, but he just smiled and shook his head one more time because there is no way it was Sara, she was in San Francisco living her li….
His thoughts get cut off when he heard the unexpected, yet beautiful voice. "I thought you might be here. I called the lab, and the receptionist told me you had already left, so I choose to come here first, hoping your day wasn't rough enough to lead you to a bar."
He turned his head to the side and stood up in shock, seeing the woman he couldn't stop thinking about standing right there in front of him. "Sara."
Feeling emotional, Sara replied with a smile. "It's me."
He shook his head with a smile as he took a few steps towards her. "What are you doing here? I mean it is so good to see you. I've miss…."
She cuts him off just as he reached her and took a step back, now with tears in her eyes. "Please stop. I uh, I have to get this out now before I lose my resolve."
He stopped his feet immediately, seeing she really wanted space from him before asking. "What's going on? What do you have to tell me?"
She took a breath and just stood there looking at the man who had been in her thoughts for the last three months, no matter how hard she tried not to, but how could she not when she….
She mentally shook her head with a sniffle. "I had this speech in my head the whole flight, but now standing in front of you all I want to do is wrap my arms around you and hold on to you for the rest of my life."
Despite feeling the tension in her, he couldn't help but smirk. "And why can't you?"
She sniffled as she spoke again. "Because what I am about to say just might push you away out of my life, forever."
He shook his head, while really wanting to take her hand but touching was clearly not what she wanted at the moment, he spoke sincerely as he kept his hands to himself. "Sara there is nothing in this world that you can say to me that will push me aw…"
She cuts him off as she pulled something out of her purse and handed it to him. "I'm pregnant. And in case it was your first question, the baby is yours."
