Before Kendra could arrive to help deal with Angelus, the gang discovered that Oz was now a werewolf. He'd been bitten by his young cousin while babysitting. And since werewolfism is inherited, that meant that his aunt by marriage, was one too. As well as any children he fathered would be too.
Xander didn't have any concerns over Oz being a werewolf. Oz hadn't known, but now he did. He was taking precautions to make sure others weren't accidentally hurt by him. Xander kinda felt like he had a brother or something. It was a nice feeling. He hadn't had anyone he could call brother since vampires killed Jesse. When Willow decided to give dating him a chance, Xander had no objections. Oz would keep her safe and see her as the treasure she was. He'd give her the love and support her own family didn't give her. She had a shot at being happy.
Him and Cordy being outed after being seen coming out of a janitor's closet after a make out session that same week, caused Cordelia some panic, but Xander calmly told her, "You're more then your popularity, Cordy. And most of these girls will be nothing more then trophy wives. But you'll be successful in your own right and I'll always believe you're snarky perfection. I'm not going anywhere, if you're willing to take a chance with me, I'm here. If your popularity is what matters, that's your choice. But make sure it's your choice and not something you've been pressured into."
After careful thought, Cordelia decided being popular wasn't fun, just easier and she liked the way Xander described her; she tucked her arm in his and walked down the school corridor with him, head held high. She'd made her choice and was sticking with it. Xander felt content and almost high at the same time. They fit so perfectly.
Then Kendra arrived. Initially her thought was she'd go after Angelus alone. Xander put his foot down on that one.
"Kendra, just because there's always been just one Slayer at a time, doesn't mean the Watchers are right that you should fight alone. Anyone fighting alone, dies a hell of alot faster. Also, you need to consider your opponent. Angelus isn't alone. He's a Master vampire, surrounded by minions. But he has an ace in the hole as well. Drusilla, a vampire who is also a seer. She can anticipate some of your choices because of that. But if we attack together, we have a much better chance. I've been thinking about this. The Watchers way is to send you out barely armed, just with a stake. But there are other ways to incapacitate and destroy vampires. So using just a single method over and over again, just makes you predictable."
"So, I propose a coordinated attack. You and Buffy enter on opposite sides of the building. Giles, Willow and Oz come in from the East side, Willow and Oz using super soakers filled with holy water and Giles staking vampires. Cordelia and I come in from the west side. Cordelia using the super soaker and me doing the staking."
"What are super soakers?" Kendra asked, confused.
"They're a toy you can fill with water, in this case holy water. I know from Halloween, real guns and enough bullets can take a vampire's head off and reduce them to dust. We don't have any real guns right now, so a substitute is necessary. Everyone carries extra stakes. Drusilla can't anticipate us all and we overwhelm them. Questions?"
"No, it seems like a sound plan, Xander. And perhaps you are right that our methods need to be reevaluated. But that is for tomorrow. I am in agreement."
After some discussion, it was agreed and they gathered their weapons and set out for the factory where Angelus and Drusilla were based. Everything went perfectly, the minions were all dusted and it was just down to Angelus and Drusilla left to deal with when things went horribly wrong.
Angelus suddenly grabbed his head and then said. "Buffy, help me!"
"Angel?!" Buffy yelled, excitedly. She shoved Kendra away from Angelus and right into Drusilla's path. Angelus laughed and said. "Man, you really are gullible. No wonder Angel found it so easy to pry your knees apart." And slammed her into the wall.
Kendra, not anticipating Buffy's move, stumbled. It was just enough for Drusilla to strike out and tear her throat out. Cordelia hit Angelus with water from her super soaker and Xander staked him as he screamed in pain.
And then there was just Drusilla left. "Naughty kitten, you're the one who took my Spike from me. But not a kitten, not anymore. Not one of us, not one of them. Something new, you are. Changing everything, you are. The future all a jumble now."
Not paying any attention to the crazy seer, Willow, Oz and Cordelia hit her with the last of their holy water and Giles staked her. It was too late for Kendra, though. She had bled out. Buffy was unconscious from where Angelus had slammed her into the wall, she would recover.
They quietly gathered Kendra's body and took her to the library. Giles called her Watcher, who said. "She died doing her duty. She died well." Something that both pissed the group off and made them proud at the same time. Kendra's Watcher seemed to think her duty was all that mattered. To the gang, she was a friend who had died trying to protect people she'd never personally know. They would never forget her.
"Where's Angel?" Buffy asked when she came to.
"It was never Angel, Buffy." Xander told her. "He tricked you. Kendra's dead. You shoved her right into Drusilla's claws. And now you have to live with the fact that people, not to mention, a Slayer, are dead because of you, because of your choices."
"No, no it was Angel! He was trapped, that's all! We could've saved him!"
"No Buffy. Jenny and I checked. The soul has moved on. We were dealing with Angelus." Giles told her.
"He's really gone?"
"Yes."
The group surrounded her and held her as she cried. Whether Buffy truly loved Angel or just thought she did, didn't matter right then. She was a friend in pain. Tomorrow they would help her deal with her choices. For tonight, they eased her thru her pain.
