Author's Note: Ths fic was inspired by a conversation I had with another author and people's perception in general of Suicide, I also re-read Demons and realised that I could extend on to it while adding a shade of realism so now it's unintentionally gone into a Triology spanning over 16 years from Kingdom's End, it will help if you read at least my other fic, Demons to understand this but it is not necessary.
Trigger Warning: Mentions of Suicide. Leave now if it's too much. On with the fic,
Sixteen years had passed after Valdis had left Oswald that fateful winter night when he had lost his cool, fearing for her safety and that of her young son she had fled.
Not before returning after to realise that Oswald was missing. She came back to an empty longhouse, and a confused and worried doorman who said that Oswald hadn't returned from a ride. She waited hours and hours until dawn for him to come back, but he never did.
It was only until the insistence of the doorman did she go home. A couple of days later, his body was found washed ashore on a nearby beach to the coast of Dunwich.
Coroners had said he died of drowning by suicide and a letter was left for their son to read when he was older.
Now came the day of her son's sixteenth birthday. He had always asked about Oswald, but Valdis got angry every time her ex husband's name was mentioned. Then she would lock herself up in her room and cry.
How could he just leave her like that? If only he thought twice. After some time she was going to forgive him, having had a change of heart which made her go back.
She read his diary, understood his pain. Understood it wasn't his fault. Before leaving, she had taken it with her and kept it in a safe place. Ready for the day her son would be old enough so she could tell him the truth about his father, Oswald.
And today, he would be old enough. Sweet Osmond would turn sixteen, and he was starting to look like his Father. Valdis could see the green eyes and blonde locks, the facial bone structure looking exactly like Oswald, only a miniature younger version.
Pushing her thoughts aside, Valdis walked into the kitchen.
Young Prince Osmond was sitting on the table, digging into his porridge hungrily.
He looked up, noticing that his Mother had entered the kitchen and greeted her.
"Good Morning Mother" he greeted warmly
Valdis nearly swooned on her knees. Even though it had been nearly two decades since she lost her husband, her son's behaviour was creepingly similar to his adult counterpart and she had to remind herself for a second not to break. After all she had to be strong, to be a role model.
Thankfully, Osmond didn't notice. He continued to dig into his food.
Valdis approached her son, stroking his dirty blonde locks, before placing a kiss on his forehead.
"Happy birthday Sweetie. Your growing up so fast into a young man, it was only yesterday when you were hobbling about trying to walk and now look at you!"
Osmond blushed at the attention. "Thanks Mama. I'm grateful for everything you've done for me. But I miss Father. I just wish he was here"
Valdis looked solemnly back at Osmond, before a lightbulb lit up in her head.
"Stay here. I think I have the perfect gift for you. It's about time. You should be ready now"
"Ready for What? Where are you going?" Osmond called after her confused
Valdis left the kitchen and into the bedroom. She hovered by a drawer that she had not opened for years. The letter was still there along with a battered book. This would be all Osmond would need to know about his Father.
Valdis picked up the letter and journal and headed out as Osmond stared at her all the more confused.
"Ready for your gift?" Valdis asked
Osmond nodded as he watched Valdis sit down and pass him a yellowed envelope along with a book.
"What is this?" he frowned picking up the letter and turning it around
Osmond teared open the letter and read its contents.
My Son.
I hope one day when you are old enough, you will understand. I am not a Bad Father, in fact I cared for your mother very much. It's just in life sometimes things happen, things that we don't have control over. One day when you are old enough you will understand life isn't easy neither is it Fair. You are better off away from me and with your Mother who will look after you. I am very sorry that I hurt her, not that she believes me anyway. Please do take care and look after her for me, I will never get to see you grow up, not that I deserve to anyway. Just know that I love you very much. You will probably hate me, and I understand - I really hate me too. But I will always love you very much.
Goodbye and Until we meet again,
Your Father, Oswald.
Osmond read it with a trembling hand, as he felt fury rise beneath him.
What kind of goddamned Father leaves his son like that and hurts his wife? That loser is my Dad? Fucking Argr.
"This is my Father? A useless Saxon Argr who hurt you and couldn't face his problems? What a Scumbag, he really did deserve to die!" Osmond yelled furious as he threw the letter on the table
"Osmond!" Valdis scolded. "Read the diary as well and perhaps you'll understand. He isn't a bad man"
Osmond scoffed "Yeah right. I already know he is an Argr and Ergi leaving us like this, Leaving you to suffer. But fine I'll read it like you asked"
Osmond angrily flicked open a page, before slamming it down afterwards.
"That's it. I've had enough of that guy. He cheated on you and killed a Woman and then he killed himself because he couldn't get over what he did. This just proves my point even more. Fucking Argr!"
"Osmond, I know you are angry but do not call your Father that" Valdis said sternly
"Why? So he can walk all over you? Just like you let him. A man like that who can't face his problems is a sissy and an Argr. He should have manned up instead of being selfish!" Osmond snapped
"Enough! I will not have you disrespect Oswald like that" Valdis shouted back
"Osmond. Osmond, Where are you going?" Valdis frantically chased after him as he stormed off out of the cottage
"I'm going for a ride. Now leave me alone!" Valdis backed away at her son's tone, giving him space.
Finally, I get some space. I can't believe it. My Father. A lowless Ergi. How was this man even King? And to think that I am his son. That I am related to such a disgusting monstrosity such as him. Why did Mother even like him anyway? And that Eivor woman? No other woman is as pretty as Mother. He lost out.
Osmond ushered his horse forward, before stopping at his destination.
Mother always used to take me here, saying Father was so brave surviving a fall down this cliff and almost dying for his countrymen here. But little do they know that he is nothing more than a cowardly, feminine loser. He thought bitterly while staring at the crashing waves in front of him, along with the cliff and the broken castle.
As he breathed in the sea air and spray all around him, he decided to sit down for a while. He opened the diary once again trying to read it but gave up, tossing it in the sea.
Just more excuses justifying what he did. Not reading anymore of his bullshit lies.
I've got to get back before I worry Mother. I'm not going to let a womanly loser ruin my birthday. In fact it makes me appreciate her more. What a strong woman she is putting up with his Bullshit. If I could see him again, I would knock him out for what he did to her and us.
With that, Osmond got up and climbed on his horse once more, before taking one last look at the ruins of Dunwich before riding off back to Valdis' home.
Author's Note: I decided to name his son Osmond after researching Viking and Saxon names as it's similar to his male counterpart. I can see why Valdis would name him that in memory of her late husband and also because he kind of looks like his namesake (being his blood and all).
Unfortunately that is a real problem in Society even today. Men are always expected to not cry and "to man up" to their problems, and male suicide is treated less seriously just because of gender. Osmond's thoughts of his Father is surprisingly common for Male victims of suicide. Or suicidal people in general are seen as "Selfish". Trust me I have heard my fair share of people saying that so this story raises awareness for that.
1. Men can be victims of Suicide and have emotions
2. Suicidal people are not selfish, they have issues and just wanted to end the pain. It's not personal and they didn't want to affect people on purpose.
On a Side note, Osmond is so sweet with the care and love he has for Valdis. He did inherit some genes from Oswald after all.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! My first story of an OC along with Valhalla Characters. In the game it is implied that Oswald and Valdis have child, but said child is not named and seen on screen so my OC covers that!
Glossary : Argr - Norse Derogatory word for a man who is a sissy and who acts feminine (was considered as bad as the N word back then, literally)
Ergi - Coward
I think Osmond would know these words from Valdis or hearing the settlers around him, considering he is Half Dane, Half Saxon. And don't forget there were Dane citizens in East Anglia after all. He probably learnt from his neighbours! Lol.
