"Morning, Tsukki!" Yamaguchi called, walking up to the tall, handsome boy, who just happened to be his best friend. Tsukishima rose from his seat against the wall, noticing Yamaguchi approaching him.
"Oh, hey, Yamaguchi," Tsukishima replied.
"Are you waiting for Suga to get here? It is kind of early," asked Yamaguchi, gesturing towards the locked club room.
"Yeah, I couldn't sleep so I got here early," Tsukishima said, his tone unreadable. He had let it slip that he hadn't been sleeping well one day.
"Oh…are you okay?" Yamaguchi asked. He worries about Tsukishima sometimes.
"Yeah, fine."
Yamaguchi looked at Tsukishima concerningly but let the subject drop. Tsukishima is usually like this, he likes to keep most things to himself. Even with Yamaguchi, who's been friends with him since primary school, he doesn't tell him much.
The other team members came shortly after Yamaguchi arrived and practice started. It was like normal, serves, receives, spikes. Kageyama and Hinata were amazing, as always. Everyone seemed to be at the top of their game that morning except for Tsukishima. Yamaguchi couldn't help but feel distracted, noticing how many volleyballs he didn't block, didn't receive, didn't kill.
"Yamaguchi! Get your head out of the clouds!" Tanaka said from behind him, slapping the green haired boy's back. Tanaka was always the first to look out for his friends, Yamaguchi liked him, despite how intense and maybe a little bit intimidating the guy could be. Tanaka was a good guy pretty much all around.
Yamaguchi clenched his hands around the volleyball, trying to clear his head. He was up to serve. The ball flew up in the air and he hit it like he always did. Nishinoya was placed on the other side of the net, ready to receive any balls that came his way. Yamaguchi felt particularly proud of his floater serve; even Nishinoya sometimes struggled to receive it.
"Nice serve!" Suga called to him as he walked to the back of the line. Yamaguchi smiled, his worry for Tsukishima vanishing for a moment. He came up behind Tsukishima in line, the tall boy's back facing him.
"Tsukki!" Yamaguchi called, grabbing Tsukishima's attention. "Want to hang out after school? I found a great movie for us to watch! It's called-"
"Sure," Tsukishima said, not even turning around. Yamaguchi could tell that Tsukishima appreciated the offer, he's known him long enough to read the salty boy's underlying emotions. Yamaguchi smiled at his friend, his heart fluttering a little.
Yamaguchi waited outside, in front of the highschool, waiting for Tsukishima. He twiddled his thumbs, a little nervous about hanging out with him. Sure, they've hung out almost everyday since they were kids…and if Yamaguchi was being completely honest he has always had a small crush on the boy. Although, lately his feelings for him have turned into something more of love. He doesn't really know what to do with those feelings but all he knows is that he wants to spend every second of every day with Tsukishima. Even though he can be kind of a jerk and puts Yamaguchi off all the time, Yamaguchi can't help but feel all light and fluttery around him.
"Yamaguchi," Tsukishima's voice snapped Yamaguchi out of his mind and he zipped around to face the tall boy.
"Tsukki!" He exclaimed, "You ready?"
"Yep."
"Alright! Let's go!" Yamaguchi started walking, Tsukishima trailing beside him.
Yamaguchi's mind wandered sometimes. Be it into anxious thoughts or daydreaming, he drifts sometimes. Tsukishima finds it annoying, but he finds most everything annoying so Yamaguchi doesn't really care. His mind is a complicated place and it takes him places sometimes. He has trouble sleeping from time to time because of it.
He likes thinking about what might happen the next day, or romantic fantasies, or just whatever pops into his head in the moment. A lot of them include Tsukishima, but he'll never admit that.
It was late at night, around midnight, and Yamaguchi and Tsukishima were still watching. The movies had ended hours ago and they had switched to YouTube. Random stuff played at this point, but they didn't care. They were too tired to select something so they just laid there watching the next video play after another. Yamaguchi's head was positioned on Tsukishima's chest, his arm wrapped around Tsukishima's stomach. Tsukishima held Yamaguchi, one arm wrapped around the freckled boy's waist, the other messing with his hair. There were nights like these where they just cuddled, wrapped in each other's arms.
Yamaguchi liked it but it confused him. Afterward they wouldn't speak a word about it, it just floated into the atmosphere never to be heard of again. Until the next time it happened, of course. It had been nagging at Yamaguchi for a while. What does it mean? Do friends do things like this? His mind clouded. He looked up at Tsukishima, half asleep. He noticed Yamaguchi looking at him and met the freckled boy's eyes.
"Yeah?" Tsukishima asked. He looked so handsome.
"Are we just going to let this happen and then never talk about it again?" Yamaguchi asked quickly. His nerves spiked, his heart speeding up a little. He never really thought he'd bring up anything about the nights. Tsukishima didn't respond for a while, only the video breaking the dead silence of the dark bedroom.
"I don't know," Tsukishima finally said, uncomfortably shifting.
Yamaguchi held onto him tighter, not wanting to leave his side. The feeling of Tsukishima's strong, warm, body gave Yamaguchi a sense of home and excitement.
"T-that's okay." said Yamaguchi, he didn't know what to say. He wanted everything but evidence of his feelings to escape. He looked up at Tsukishima. "Just don't let go of me." Tsukishima's cute glasses sat on his face a little lopsided, his amber eyes focused on Yamaguchi through the lenses.
"Yeah," Tsukishima said, "I won't."
And he kept his promise. For that night at least.
