Chapter 11
Dawn was just starting to light up the east sky as Skylar drove the Jeep down the road. "Okay," she said. "Kids, you two stay with Riley at all times. She'll protect you."
"Okay," Rebecca said.
"Okay," Wooly said.
"Komo, you're with me," the programmer said. "It's going to come down to us shutting down that portal for good and making sure the monster can never return."
"I'm curious as to your plan for that," the genie admitted.
"You'll see, Komo. I promise."
Riley nodded. "I hope the Army doesn't see us as a threat," she said.
Skylar smiled. "Don't worry," she said. "We've got eyes on the inside."
"Okay, that's it," the detective said, looking at her. "Girl, you've been acting mysterious ever since we left your friend's amusement park."
"She's right," Komo said. "Are you going to tell us? Or we can make you spill the beans?"
The programmer smiled. "I knew you two would pick up on it," she said. "But I can't say just yet. Besides, it'll be better if you guys see it than me telling you." Her face then fell. "I just hope it doesn't backfire on us."
"But we're going to win, right?" Rebecca said.
"Yes, Rebecca, we will," Skylar promised. "We're never going to let those evil people hurt you or Wooly again. And we're going to expose their secrets for the world to see."
They found some vehicles on the sides of the road and Skylar rolled down her window, moving slowly and holding out her free hand to show she wasn't armed. A man came up to her and looked at her. "Chocolate," he said.
Hearing that, the programmer relaxed and looked at him. "Sprinkles," she replied.
He nodded and turned to the armed soldiers. "She's clean," he said before looking back and seeing the kids in the backseat, along with Komo and Riley was in the passenger seat. "Sky, be careful," he said, his voice lowered. "My 'boss' is really unhinged."
"We're ready for that," she said reassuringly. "Your brother gave me what I needed."
He nodded. "Border?" He asked.
She nodded again. "Be ready," she said. "Things are going to light up fast."
He gave the message to the man at the gate, who nodded as he waved them through. Everyone in the Jeep took a deep breath and Skylar looked up, spotting their mystery friend nearby and ready. Seeing the time was now ten minutes to six o'clock, she looked at the others in the Jeep. "Ready?" She asked.
"Ready," Riley said firmly.
"Ready," Komo said.
"Ready," Rebecca and Wooly said in unison.
They got out and the kids stuck close to the detective. "Okay," Skylar said. "Let's move."
They moved quickly and quietly, seeing some soldiers standing guard nearby. The soldiers saw them and waved them forward, keeping quiet as they had been alerted by the guard team that the group would be arriving. The Commander of the Army came out and saw them. "Is that them?" He asked the soldier beside him.
"Yes, sir," the soldier replied.
"Alright then. Sound the alarms in five minutes."
He motioned the group forward and everyone was soon in place. A moment later, a shrill alarm rang out and the doors opened. Skylar and Komo rushed in with the soldiers, making it to the portal and the programmer looked at him. "We need to open it," she said.
"What?" He asked over the alarms.
"Trust me, Komo," she said. "It's the only way to free you."
Though curious, he nodded. "What do you need me to do?" He asked.
"When I open the portal, go inside with your armor on and then exit your armor and come back out here," she said. "Hopefully it'll catch the monster's attention and we'll soon be rid of it."
As the rudely awoken scientists tried to make sense of what was happening, Skylar opened the portal and Komo did as she had suggested, soon standing beside her. "You sure this will work?" He asked.
"I'm hoping it will," she said.
"WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!"
They turned to see the lead scientist and he looked angry. "What are you doing?!" He asked.
"Freeing Rebecca and Wooly from your grasp!" Skylar said as Riley came in with the kids, quickly going to stand by the soldiers that were gathered and the kids stayed behind the soldiers, who at once formed a protective barrier around them.
"Don't worry, kids," one of them said. "None of your former captors are getting through us."
The lead scientist looked angrier now. "We'll see about that!" He said, pressing a button on the wall.
Skylar was watching the portal and soon enough, she saw the horrific monster come charging forward. Her hand hovered over the button to close the portal and after a bit, she pressed it and the portal slowly began to close. As she hoped, the monster seemed to run forward a bit faster, colliding with the golden armor. A flash of golden light startled them all before the monster was pulled into the armor before a black hole appeared. "Black hole!" Komo called out warningly.
"He pressed the button!" Rebecca cried out, pointing to the lead scientist, who smirked.
"Nothing can stop that," he said. "Even if the portal does close."
A wind began to whip around the area and everyone stood their ground, grabbing onto something or each other to keep from being pulled into the black hole. The lead scientist smirked again and went to escape, only to be stopped by the same mystery friend of Skylar's. The mystery person pulled out a playing card and turned it over, revealing it to be the Ace of Spades. "It's over," the person spoke before taking off their hat and coat.
Rebecca's gasp of shock sounded above the rushing wind. "DADDY!" She called out.
Skylar's jaw dropped. "SAM?!" She asked in shock.
"NO! YOU'RE DEAD!" The leading scientist said in shock. "THE EXPLOSION!"
He went to run, but two soldiers managed to catch him outside and place handcuffs on him. Sam looked up and threw the playing card like a ninja throwing a shuriken into the still-closing portal. It disappeared inside and the portal then quickly shut the rest of the way, leaving no trace of it ever being there.
As things quieted down, Rebecca ran from behind the soldiers and up to her father. "DADDY!" She exclaimed, happy tears running down her face as she jumped into her father's arms, hugging him as tears fell down her face. "Daddy," she sobbed out, happy to see him again.
"Rebecca, my little sugar cookie," he said, hugging her tight as tears fell down his own face. "Thank goodness you're safe."
A flash of gold light caught everyone's attention and Komo suddenly transformed, becoming human again. "I'm...I'm free?" He asked.
"The magic in your armor," Skylar said. "Someone needed to take your place so you could be free. My friend was the one that suggested we use it to trap the monster."
Komo smiled before looking at the lady in a lab coat that had come to stand beside him. "You were right, Kate," he said.
"I didn't doubt my niece or Skylar for even a second," she said, taking off the lab coat and the wig to reveal a familiar person to both the programmer and the detective.
"Kate!" Skylar said in shock.
"Aunt Kate!" Riley cried out, running down to them and hugging her aunt tightly.
"But...how?" Sam asked, stunned.
Komo smiled. "Kate told me that she was going to try to get on the inside if she could to help us," he said. "A few weeks before Riley got in touch with Skylar."
Kate smiled. "Thankfully, Skylar had a friend who's brother was among the scientists on the team looking for Rebecca," she said. "He got me in and we began planning to sabotage everything, but didn't know when the best time to do so was."
"So when the Army showed up, we figured it would be best to get ready," Skylar's friend said, smiling. "But you guys arrived sooner than we expected, so you kind of beat us to the punch."
"Sorry about that," Riley said, but she was smiling.
Kate looked at Komo. "Your family is safe, Komo," she said. "They're waiting for you."
He nodded and hugged her. "Thank you, Kate," he said.
"So Riley was right," Skylar said. "She deduced that you must have been a father from the way you acted around Rebecca and Wooly. Always protecting them and spending time with them, helping them to feel like kids again."
Komo smiled and hugged her. "Stay in touch?" He asked.
She chuckled. "You're not getting rid of me as a friend that easily," she said, smiling.
Rebecca meanwhile had been set down on her feet as she had wanted to ask her dad a question. She then walked over to Wooly and held a hand out to him. He took it and she brought him over to her dad. "Dad, this is Wooly," she said. "He became human after Riley, Skylar, and Komo rescued us."
"Hi, Mr. Sam," Wooly said shyly.
Sam smiled. "I was looking for one child and I've been blessed with two," he said.
Rebecca lit up. "Daddy? You mean...you'll adopt Wooly?" She asked hopefully. "He can be my brother for real?"
Wooly was stunned and then hopeful, looking up at Sam, who smiled and nodded. "Yes," he said. "Welcome to the family, son."
The boy felt happy tears fill his eyes as Sam held his arms open to give the boy a hug and Wooly ran into his arms with Rebecca close behind, both hugging their dad, who hugged them both protectively.
The Commander smiled as he witnessed all of them. "Alright, everyone," he said. "Our work here is done. Let's let the cleanup crew do their thing and we'll all go home."
The others agreed and Riley smiled. "I like the sound of that," she said.
"Me too," Skylar said. "Come on. Everyone hop into the Jeep. I'll get all of you to your homes."
Kudos to KayloCreschendo0825 for guessing that the mystery figure was Rebecca's father, Sam. :) And I bet you all didn't expect Aunt Kate to be there too. :) But yes, she was posing as one of the scientists looking for Rebecca.
The monster is gone, the other scientists arrested, and Wooly has been adopted by Sam. Next chapter will be the epilogue. :)
