"It was a lovely ceremony," Juan told his daughter, as they shared the father/daughter dance.
"I thought so," Penelope agreed. "Mom helped out a lot. I should've asked to help in the first place instead of depending on Emily who hates planning complicated events, which probably has a lot to do with her childhood of constantly going to parties and such. Those type of events aren't something she enjoyed, as she would have preferred to be left at home, something her mother never even considered as far as I know."
"Your friend is an adult now, so her mother doesn't really have any more influence on what she does."
"That's true," Penelope agreed.
"Your mom was glad to help and I was certainly happy to walk you down the aisle. I really like your choice of husband," Juan told his daughter.
"I'm glad, because I would like my parents and my husband to get along," Penelope said. "I know we'll probably only see you a few times a year, but still, I'd like there not be tension between you and Dave, as it will make things much more pleasant when we do visit."
"You chose well, so I'm sure Dave and I will get along splendidly when we do visit," Juan said. "He's nice, polite, well mannered, well-off and it's clear he loves you, because it's as plain as daylight, even to someone like me. The ring and the earrings are just his way of saying that he adores you."
"Well, since I adore him too, I can't really complain," Penelope said smiling. "I'm looking forward to having children right away."
"Your mother and I will look forward to meeting our grandchildren," Juan said.
"Hopefully, I'll get pregnant on the honeymoon, but we'll see. I know very well what stress can stop a woman from conceiving, so it's better if I don't really expect it. If it it happens, it happens," Penelope said with a philosophical shrug. "I stopped taking any form of birth control last week, so it has had plenty of time to get out of my system before our honeymoon."
The truth was that she hadn't bothered to take any form of birth control at all, as she knew that she couldn't get pregnant until she was immortal so there had been no point. She had only told her dad that she had been taking birth control to ease his mind. She might be pregnant now for all she knew, since she had been immortal for at least a few days, but she wasn't about to tell her father that.
"You look really handsome in that tuxedo dad," Penelope told her father admiring him. Her father, Juan Garcia, was still a handsome man, with his short black hair and slightly darker complexion. His Spanish ancestry was obvious as he wasn't as white as a Caucasian, but really it was hardly noticeable. Juan had lots of white in his hair and lines in his face, but that came with age, Penelope knew.
"Thank you, but I still can't wait to get out of this monkey suit," Juan said trying not to pull at his rather stiff collar.
The tux was the traditional black with a white cummerbund and a bowtie of the same color. Her father, did indeed, look very handsome in his rented tux and Penelope had seen several older woman looking her father up and down appreciatively.
"I know it's kind of uncomfortable, especially when you are not used to formal wear," Penelope sympathized. "I doubt you'll ever have to wear a tuxedo again after this, so you can stand it for a few more hours."
"I suppose so," Juan reluctantly agreed.
"Try not to get it dirty as they'll charge you for having to have it cleaned if you do," Penelope warned him and Juan nodded.
"I'll try to keep it clean," Juan promised. "Places like that will drain you dry if you're not careful."
"Yeah, they will," Penelope said. "Still, it's only for one day."
"I love you so much Penny," Juan told his daughter kissing her on the forehead as the song ended. "I'm very glad that you finally found someone you could be happy with."
"So am I," Penelope agreed kissing her father's cheek.
Dave immediately took her in his arms as soon as Juan as relinquished his hold.
"Have a good time dancing with your dad?" Dave asked smiling. "You seem to be having a rather intense conversation.
"Yes, I did. He likes you, which means there won't be any tension when we do visit them or they visit us," Penelope explained. "I doubt he would've come to the wedding at all if he didn't approve of the match. He actually noticed how visibly you adore me and that's not like dad at all really, as such subtle emotions usually pass him right by."
"I do adore you and it's good your father noticed, as it means he knows I will take care of you, which will also mean less tension between us," Dave said. "Your parents won't be around forever like mine will, so we'll visit them as often as we can over the next couple of decades and we'll make sure we take the children to see them as much as we can. They deserve to see their grandchildren grow up before they pass on."
"Yes, they do," Penelope agreed.
"Of course, we'll visit my parents to, but they'll be around a lot longer than yours will, so they'll understand if we don't visit them as much and as we do yours," Dave said. "They can always come and see us and they know this."
"I'll always be happy to see them. Your parents are wonderful. I like your siblings to, the ones I have met anyway," Penelope said.
"So what about a little bite to eat my lady?" Dave offered. "I saw you didn't eat much breakfast, so you must be really hungry now."
"I was too nervous to eat much at breakfast," Penelope agreed. "I wanted everything to go perfectly on our wedding day."
"And it has," Dave said. "The ceremony was short but sweet and the reception is going just like it should."
"So far," Penelope said.
"Even if something unexpected happens it's not your fault, sweetie," Dave told his bride. "You can't predict everything after all. If something does happen Emily and Aaron will take care of it, so we can enjoy our wedding day."
"Alright then," Penelope said relaxing putting her head on Dave's shoulder, as they danced. Finally, the song ended and a couple headed for the buffet table to get them some food and to sit down for a few minutes.
~~~Dave and Penelope~~~
"Welcome to the family Penny," Rebecca told her new daughter-in-law.
"Thank you," Penelope said smiling, as she and Dave stood over in a deserted corner talking softly so no one could overhear their conversation and get the wrong idea.
"It was about time for my son to settle down," Rebecca added.
"So you've said and more than once lately," Dave told his mother rolling his eyes. "Choosing a mate is not always easy mom you should know that, especially not for someone like me. I wasn't about to be stuck with someone that I couldn't stand after awhile. Someone who complained all the time for instance, as that type of woman would drive me crazy in no time."
"If I was stupid enough to marry a man like that I'd probably divorce them within a few years," Penelope agreed. "One who complained all the time or accused me of cheating or cheated on you behind your back themselves."
"They can also steal all your money, if they know your bank account number," Dave said. "This is a very high tech society mom and somebody doesn't have to physically rob a bank anymore in order to get somebody's life savings."
"Alright, you're correct," Rebecca said finally. "It's not always easy to find a partner, especially not when you're immortal. It was easier centuries ago where a lot of people believed in the supernatural."
"So see mom, if I had gotten married so long ago I would not been able to marry Penny now and I love her so much. You might have wanted me to go ahead and get married, so you could have some more grandkids but I doubt very much I would've been as happy as I am now, because Penny hadn't been born yet," Dave pointed out logically. "I can understand your need for all your children to settle down, but annoying them about it is not the way to go. Once Aaron found Emily that encouraged me to find someone for myself. Unlike Aaron I had never been married, so I couldn't just expect my former wife's reincarnation to pop up."
Rebecca nodded pushing a piece of brown hair behind her ear, because her son was absolutely correct. Rebecca's hair was its natural color, but Jacob had donned one of his numerous wigs so he would look older than he normally did. Of course, Jacob did have a few lines in his face, as even immortals could get those from laughter, worry or frustration. Still, he had figured it was better that he look like he had aged at least somewhat, though he still didn't look in his 70s, but that could be waved away, as some people just didn't look their age. Rebecca could always get away with the excuse that she colored her hair so that the gray didn't show, as a lot of older women did that, because they hated to get white or gray in their hair, as it allowed people to know that they were older then they looked. Some people could be very vain about anyone knowing their true age. Of course, some men did the same as well.
"It's better to be careful or an immortal could end up with somebody who would only annoy them in the long run and that you might come to hate eventually," Penelope said supporting Dave in what he had said. "We aren't just talking a few decades here, but what is technically multiple lifetimes. Not everybody is going to accept that immortality can exist and a lot of people would want it for all the wrong reasons."
"Alright, I'll try not to mention it again," Rebecca said. "Both are you right in what you have said."
"That's all I ask mom. I know I'm the oldest son the first baby you ever had, but I wasn't really ready to settle down until Aaron found Emily that is. It's not like I was against marriage or anything, but you can't force someone to fall in love."
Rebecca nodded, because her son was absolutely correct. You couldn't force someone to fall in love, as it always happened naturally. She supposed she had been a bit of a pest, but she had just wanted oldest son to get married and have some children and now that was happening. Dave had never been one to be forced into anything, so all her nagging had only annoyed him, instead of encouraging him.
"So many grandchildren in the immediate future?"
"Possibly, as I've been immortal for a few days, but there's no way to tell right now, as we certainly didn't use protection," said Penelope quietly. "If it hasn't happened yet, maybe it will on our honeymoon. I really promised dad that I wouldn't get pregnant until I was officially married, so no saying anything. Besides, I might not be, so let's not spread the news around I am. I don't want people to come and congratulate us when I might not be pregnant."
"I won't," Rebecca promised. "Just the future promise of some grandchildren out of my oldest son is enough to make me happy...for now."
Dave rolled his eyes and he and Penelope headed back out onto the dance floor.
"She sure is persistent," Penelope said once she and Dave were out of earshot. "I understand her motivation however."
"So do I, but it doesn't mean it isn't kind of annoying," Dave admitted. "I understand she wants grandchildren out of me, but I wasn't about to be forced to marry someone just to get her off my back."
"I don't blame you there, as I feel the same way," Penelope agreed. "I think your mother really agrees with you about being forced into just choosing someone, but she also wanted you to settle down, though I know she doesn't want you to be miserable because you made the wrong choice."
"No, of course not," Dave agreed, as the two danced closely together. "Still, she'll get off the subject now, since I have finally settled down like she wanted and that's all to the good, as far as I'm concerned."
"I really like your mother," Penelope told Dave. "It's clear she loves you very much, which puts her in my good books. Mothers can be annoying, yes, but then, that's their job."
"I'm glad you do, because she adores you, just because you make me so happy," Dave said kissing Penelope's cheek. "I love my mother and I always will, she just has this thing about all her children settling down and I am the oldest son, so I can understand it. She was born at a time where most people settled down young, particularly the women, so they could have as many children as possible, since they died from so many things back so long ago and it's not always easy to overcome what you have learned or been taught."
"But even if you understand it's still annoying," Penelope said and Dave nodded.
"Yes, it is," Dave agreed. "Still, lets not talk about such subjects on our wedding day. Let's just enjoy ourselves."
"Sounds good to me," Penelope agreed smiling kissing Dave on the cheek.
