It was a warm day, the first sign that spring was officially here, and the people of Dillydale were enjoying the sunshine after a couple of months of snow. Most of the residents had their heaters or fireplaces to keep warm, but Mr. Scatterbrain had his special fire monkey, Matches, who happily shared his fire tail with the magenta Mr. Man and all his animals.

Now Matches, newly changed with something that Mr. Scatterbrain somehow knew was called evolution, tagged along with the Mr. Man and his monkey, Bunko as they went shopping for stuff they needed at home. Mr. Scatterbrain was lost in his own world so he didn't hear someone calling his name until someone stepped in his path, and he stopped just before running into Mr. Nosy.

The light green Mr. Man waved at him while his small friend, coming up to join them, greeted him happily.

"Whatcha up to today, Mr. Scatterbrain?" asked the nosy man.

"Um…" For a moment, Mr. Scatterbrain forgot. Then it came back to him. "Oh, just doing a little shopping. How are you today, Mr. Nosy?"

"I'm good." Mr. Nosy looked down at Matches, curiosity in his eyes.

"I'm also good," Mr. Small said, smiling. "How about yourself, Mr. Scatterbrain?"

"I'm good." Mr. Scatterbrain looked up. "Nice day."

"Yup." Mr. Small grinned even wider. "We're on our way to meet Miss. Calamity and Miss. Music."

Mr. Scatterbrain blinked at him. "Miss. Music?" he asked, confused.

"You know, the new Little Miss who moved here in the middle of winter," Mr. Small told him patiently. "You've met her a couple of times, remember?"

At first, Mr. Scatterbrain didn't reply. Then he remembered. "Oh, yeah! She's nice."

"She is," Mr. Small responded.

"Can I join you?" Mr. Scatterbrain asked.

Mr. Small and Mr. Nosy exchanged a glance. "What about your shopping?" Mr. Nosy asked.

Mr. Scatterbrain was confused. "Shopping?" He had forgotten, but now he remembered. "Oh yeah." He turned to one of his monkeys. "Bunko, do you remember what we need?"

Bunko nodded.

"Good. Can you go get those things and meet us back at the house later?" Mr. Scatterbrain asked.

The monkey nodded and started walking toward the shop.

Mr. Nosy stared after him. "Will he be okay going to the store by himself?" he asked.

"Oh, he'll be fine. Lead on."

Mr. Scatterbrain followed the friends, Matches right behind him. They went through town and soon arrived at the park, where they met Little Miss Calamity, who seemed surprised but pleased to see Mr. Scatterbrain.

"What are you doing here?" she asked him.

"I asked Mr. Small if I could come with them," Mr. Scatterbrain answered. "I was… um…" He trailed off, having trouble remembering what he had been doing.

"He just wanted to see Miss. Music again," Mr. Small said, and Mr. Scatterbrain blinked.

Did I? He couldn't remember.

He shrugged and looked around for Matches, but the fire monkey was near the fountain, staring into the water. Mr. Scatterbrain walked over there and opened his mouth to speak, when he heard someone gasp behind him.

"Is that a Pokemon?"

Mr. Scatterbrain turned to see Little Miss Music running to him. She was staring at Matches, her mouth opened. "It is a Pokemon! It's the evolution of Chimchar! I can't believe it!" She turned to Mr. Scatterbrain. "I didn't know you had a Pokemon! Where did you find it? How long have you had it?"

The magenta Mr. Man just stared at her, not sure how to answer any of her questions. She was just confusing him. Footsteps made him look up to see the others joining them.

"Miss. Music, you know what Matches is?" Mr. Small asked.

"Matches? That's such a great name since it's a fire type!" Little Miss Music was so excited, and Mr. Scatterbrain didn't know why.

"A… fire type?" Mr. Nosy asked, very curious.

"Okay, slow down, Miss. Music," said Little Miss Calamity. "Start over. How do you know what this monkey is?"

Little Miss Music took a breath and let it out. "Okay. This monkey– Matches, right?- is a Pokemon. A fire type Pokemon."

"What's a Pokemon, exactly?" Mr. Small asked.

"Wait." Mr. Scatterbrain's mind was whirling. "I heard that word before. Pokemon. I… can't remember where I heard it…"

"A Pokemon is a creature with these strange powers. Matches here is a fire type, which means he knows fire moves, such as Ember and Flame Wheel."

"Ember? I heard that, too." Where did he hear these things before? He had no idea, but he just felt like someone told him all this before.

Little Miss Music looked at him. "Where did you find him?"

"In the woods. He was badly hurt, so I took him to the hospital. But when he woke up, he burned down the building. He saved me, and he's been with me ever since."

"Wow! I can't believe any of this! I wonder what he's doing here. I mean, how did he get here? Are there any more Pokemon in Dillydale?"

"Not as far as we know," Mr. Small told her. "But how do you know about all of this?" He paused and then spoke quietly," Is it from your world?"

Mr. Scatterbrain turned to him, putting his head to the side in confusion. Her world? What did he mean?

"Yes," Little Miss Music replied. "Pokemon is a TV show and video game in my world. Matches is from the fourth gen, Sinnoh."

Everyone just stared at her.

She waved her hand. "That's not important right now." She turned back to Matches. "I always wanted to meet a Pokemon! And Chimchar is one of my favorites, but I'm not as familiar with his evolutions."

"Evolutions?" Mr. Small asked. "There's more?"

"There's another stage after this one. Most Pokemon have three stages. The basic, which is usually the baby Pokemon, and then the second stage, and the final stage. If I remember right, the last stage is Infernape."

"What's this stage?" Mr. Nosy asked.

Little Miss Music hesitated. "Monferno, I think," she finally said.

Mt. Scatterbrain turned to Matches, who looked a little confused about Little Miss Music's excitement over him. Mr. Scatterbrain was very curious and he wondered if Little Miss Music knew all the answers to the questions he's had ever since he met Matches.

"Where do you think he came from?" he asked her.

"He's a Sinnoh region Pokemon, so there I guess," Little Miss Music said. "But I can't even begin to guess what he's going here," she added when Mr. Scatterbrain opened his mouth to ask another question. She turned to the fire monkey. "I wish he could just tell us," she murmured, frowning.

Mr. Scatterbrain wanted to ask more questions, but his mind was blank at the moment.

"Are there more Pokemon in his world?" Mr. Small asked.

"Oh, yes," Little Miss Music replied. "Lots and lots. I don't know how many regions there are now, but every few years they come out with a new game with a whole new region. I want to say maybe 6 or 7 different regions filled up with all kinds of Pokemon."

"Wow," Mr. Nosy and Mr. Small said at the same time.

"That's amazing," Little Miss Calamity whispered, eyes wide.

Mr. Scatterbrain just stared at Matches. He wanted to know more. He wanted to meet every single Pokemon. Whatever brought Matches here, could it bring more Pokemon? He wanted to be a Pokemon trainer!

Wait… Trainer? Where did he hear that?

"What's a trainer?" he asked Little Miss Music.

She stared at him. "It's someone who battles against other people," she said. "They also catch Pokemon and battle Pokemon to get stronger. Most trainers aim to be the champion of their region, which means battling the elite four which are the strongest trainers, but the champion is even stronger. If you beat the elite four and the champion, you're the new champion."

Champion? Mr. Scatterbrain thought. He's heard that word too. Suddenly he remembered where. A dream! He had a dream, right before Matches evolved. He was… He struggled to remember… He was battling a trainer and he told him all these things.

"This is so awesome," Mr. Nosy said, and Mr. Small nodded in agreement.

"Is there a way to go there to meet more Pokemon?" the magenta Mr. Man asked.

Little Miss Music shrugged. "No idea," she replied. "I don't even know how Matches came here to Dillydale." She studied the fire monkey, before shrugging again. "No clue. Sorry," she said to Mr. Scatterbrain, who frowned.

"That's okay, Miss. Music," said Mr. Small. "At least we solved one mystery: What kind of animal Matches is. Well, not animal, apparently. Pokemon." He stared wide eyed at Matches.

"Well, this was very exciting, learning about Mr. Scatterbrain's pet," Little Miss Calamity said, and she turned to Little Miss Music. "Do you want to go get some lunch?" she asked her, and Little Miss Music nodded. Little Miss Calamity turned to Mr. Nosy and Mr. Small. "Want to join us?"

"What do you say, Mr. Nosy?" the small Mr. Man asked his best friend.

"Sounds good," Mr. Nosy replied.

Little Miss Calamity looked at Mr. Scatterbrain. "How about you?"

Mr. Scatterbrain had been lost in thought, and when Little Miss Calamity addressed him, he jumped a little. Then he shook his head. "No, I think I'm going to head home. You ready, Matches?" he asked his monkey. Matches nodded, and they left the park. Mr. Scatterbrain kept glancing at Matches, mind whirling. He wanted to know everything possible about Matches and Pokemon, but right now he has to just remember everything Little Miss Music just told him and hope one day he'll be able to experience life as a trainer in person.

When they got home, Bunko came to meet him, seeming proud of himself. Mr. Scatterbrain didn't know why, until he led them into the kitchen and he saw all the groceries. He bent down and patted him on the head.

"Good job, Bunko," he said, and then he went to put all that he got in its place, but his mind was still on Matches and Pokemon and everything Little Miss Music told him.
