"Prince Kouga, there's someone here to see you" Ginta pressed urgently, he had no idea what someone as powerful as Lord Sesshomaru was doing here, he was feared and respected among the demon clans. To have him as an ally, it was the greatest honour one could have. What reason could he have to travel to the east, so far from his own region to see their clans. Crossing borders to see them of all people. He was known for living an isolated and private life, the only people he spoke to frequently were his servants and on occasion his mother.
Kouga sniffed the air, he had sensed him before he had even arrived, that scent was so familiar anyone would know who it was. Kouga raised his eyebrow "What's that bastard doing here?" he huffed. Sesshoumaru was the son of the great lord general, Touga, an immensely powerful InuDaiyokai who passed away after the marriage to his second wife, he was greatly respected even in his tribe. However, his son was less so. He was known for being cold, calculated person, known for his calm exterior and never allowing emotions to cloud his judgement. So for what reason could a man like that show interest in the wolf demons. A clan known for their pack mentality, they were loyal to each other and protective, his complete opposite.
"Apparently he has an offer, one of alliance, you might want to hear this" Ginta suggested, they didn't want to get on the wrong side of this guy, he could wipe them all out without even blinking. The damage he could do was frightening, all of the pack members were nervous of his presence but didn't dare speak out against him.
Kouga sighed, rubbing his head irritably, Sesshoumaru was a hostile guy, he lived nomadically despite his castle, he only visited people when it was crucial to him, often avoiding his allies like the plague. He wasn't known for being pleasant "Whatever, let's hope he's here briefly, no doubt he'll complain about the scent of wolves" he muttered. The last thing he needed was his people in danger, if they accepted this meeting and tried to be as neutral but welcoming as possible. They could get out of this without any stresses. There were vulnerable elderly and children, they wouldn't be able to hold their own against a DaiYokai.
Kouga sat on his throne silently, it was made from wood, carved with wolf heads at the arms, decorated with beads, fangs, moon symbols and pelt. Many of the leaders of the Eastern wolf clan had sat on this throne, his parents, his grandparents and other ancestors. The throne room was a sacred place, even other tribes would never dare to desecrate this room, it was a mark of great disrespect. He glared down at Sesshoumaru suspiciously "Lord Sesshoumaru, for what do we owe the pleasure, it's not often we see your head around these parts". Sesshoumaru had no allies, he had alliances briefly but he was loyal only to himself, for what reason would he come here? His disdain for humans, let alone other demons was no secret.
Sesshoumaru peered at Kouga, he was younger than himself but showed great potential as a leader, so long as he didn't become foolish and arrogant. He was the current prince of the wolf tribe, respected by his clan and their neighbours. He was a strong, tactical leader, empathetic to his people and loyal to his tribe, he knew when to choose his battles, when to fight and when to run. As much as he hated the scent of wolves, he was a good suitor for his sister. He would be able to tame his sister, make her see common sense, how her actions effected others and how to see reason. His father had been in an arranged marriage for his first wife, before choosing his second of his own volition. He had yet not found himself a mate, he had no time for such matters. But his sister was of age and needed to find a suitable partner "I've come to make a bargain, an offer of alliance that I do believe will suit us both" he explained.
Kouga raised an eyebrow, this caught his interest, he would bite but he wasn't about to put his people in danger. If he sensed something amiss he would back out "A bargain huh? What could the wolf tribe have that you could possibly want?" he laughed. They had nothing of value to a DaiYokai such as himself, he would have no interest in a bride, no valuables, their land wasn't of interest to him. So why come all this way to make a suggestion.
"As you know, my father remarried a human woman, tainting our bloodline. The result was my half sister, a Hanyou. She insisted on living among humans and further embarrassing me" Sesshoumaru explained. He had distanced himself from Izayoi, tolerating the marriage as he couldn't go against his father nor make him see reason. He was civil to Izayoi but made it clear he merely tolerated her and despised her with every fibre of his being. After Izayoi's death, InuYuki was placed into his care as a toddler, forcing him to raise her as a princess. But she was wild, spirited and defiant, causing him no end of problems, so he distanced himself from her and let her do as she pleased.
Kouga raised his eyebrow, though many demons harboured a hatred for humans due to being natural enemies, causing a rift between the species. Not all demons felt this way, not all hunted down humans and treated them with such disdain. Though he was distrusting and wary of humans he didn't fully despise them, though given his parents divorce and Touga's remarriage to a human princess, he could see why Sesshoumaru would be angered. However, he wanted to know why he was being brought into this, why he was being told of his family history and the estranged sister he didn't care for "What does this have to do with me?" Kouga asked.
Sesshoumaru smiled "I shall grant an alliance with the wolf tribe, we shall become political allies. Your tribe will have my protection, once local demons learn of your ties to me you shall become feared. Enemies wouldn't consider attacking your territory, you would be immune to threats. Your ranks would grow higher as a result". He was being generous, involving himself in a weaker demon tribe and offering his protection, many new better than to start a war with a DaiYokai. Though it would involve sensitive matters, many meetings and a lot of generosity, it would be beneficial for them both. He wouldn't have to worry about lesser demons attacking his borders and he would become even more respected. Kouga stared, he had no idea of what to say, so many thought rushing through his head at once. This was not what he expected when Sesshoumaru had come to visit his tribe. Though he had worked hard for his position and was considered the strongest in his pack, there were demons who still threatened them and could harm their tribe. If he had Sesshoumaru's protection, then his people would have less dangers to worry about.
"Prince Kouga, such an alliance would cast a shield around our people, our attacks would lessen and our tribe would be defended" Ginta explained. Not all demons were of the level of strength Kouga was, he was considered the best warrior among their people. He was admired and loved by many, anyone who became his wife would have a great honour. For Sesshoumaru to make such an offer to him, it couldn't be passed up. Their people would be protected and respected. This was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.
Kouga wouldn't deny that he would risk dirtying his hands to protect his people, but his pride wouldn't allow him to ignore his people being mistreated. Their wellbeing was his main priority, making sure they had enough food, supplies etc. Sesshoumaru had the influence to assure his people's safety, they would have the best form of protection. But then Sesshoumaru could abuse that, he may become manipulative on his behalf knowing they needed him. "Ok, I'll bite Lord Sesshoumaru, but what's the catch, you wouldn't come all this way merely for an alliance, there's got to be further reasoning" Kouga asked. There was more to this than he was letting on, keeping secrets from him, he wasn't going to be manipulated so easily.
Sesshoumaru frowned, as expected of his breed, the wolf prince was sly, he could read him like a book. He took a deep breath "As I explained, my half sister had decided to embarrass me by becoming involved with humans, more so that a priest of a small village. I cannot allow her to taint our bloodline with that of a human, let alone a priest" he explained. He could not approve of such a union, let alone accept the embarrassment that the priest had taken his sisters virginity. He was the enemy of demons, many of his lineage had sealed and exorcised numerous demons over the years. She was betraying their clan by doing such a thing. But perhaps he could make her see sense, by making the decision for her.
Kouga's eyes widened, now he understood why Sesshoumaru was so eager for an alliance and his reasoning for being so upset at his younger sister. For someone like him this was the biggest insult you could go through. Not only were humans the enemies of demons, but priests were the worst of them, monks, priests and priestesses held innate spiritual power used to ward off, seal and exorcise demons. Why would she betray her people for the sake of a priest? Now he could see why Sesshoumaru was so annoyed. He was curious behind her reasoning to betray her people and choose the side of what was perceived as the enemy. Was she being held hostage by the village? Had her demon powers been sealed away somehow? Trying to make sense of the situation "I see, and you want me to kidnap her?" he asked.
Sesshoumaru smirked, it seemed the wolf prince was oblivious in some areas. Perhaps he could use this to his advantage somehow "Your elders have been pressuring you to find a mate have they not? You've come of age to find a woman for yourself" he teased. Prince Kouga, who refused to find a mate, marry and unite with another wolf tribe despite gathering many offers. A childhood friend of the northern wolf tribe had been very fond of him indeed but rejected her. His people worried about him finding marriage and which woman would sway his heart. Perhaps his sister could be bait. Kouga blushed, now Sesshoumaru was being arrogant, mocking him in the throne room and in front of his people no less. Was he here to pick a fight because it was starting to feel that way. Yes, he was seventeen in humans years, the age of which a man was expected to find a wife, however, he was pressured with the responsibility of caring for his people. He needed a wife equal to him, he would accept nothing less and had found no woman that could meet his expectations. One that was strong, beautiful, empathetic and powerful, to rule by his side. There were plenty of lovely female wolf demons he could choose from, but none of them were to his liking. He wouldn't accept a mere woman based on someone else's choice, he wished to choose for himself, for love.
"What does the mating ritual of the wolf clan have to do with you? Why embarrass our prince?" Ginta snapped. It was known that their leader was trying to find a mate but he hadn't found the woman for him. His heart sought out an equal, the perfect woman who brought out the best in him yet he hadn't found her. All of his people had been fully supportive of him, they knew how much love meant to Kouga. They wouldn't force him to marry someone he held no connection with.
"As much as I detest my sister for the problems she causes me, she has her uses. She too has come of age to mate, though she actively avoids it and spends her time in that village. She is rather lovely for a half breed, my father's genes bode well. She's gained attention from other lesser demons. But she would suit you as a wife" Sesshoumaru explained. She insulted him, argued with him, avoided him and showed nothing but disrespect in his presence. She had potential as a Hanyou and yet wasted her time among humans. She refused to find a mate and shamed their family line. She was an attractive Hanyou and many suitors had asked him for her hand in marriage. But he had chosen Kouga, he should be honoured.
Kouga hummed, if he formed an alliance with Sesshoumaru, aside from political shielding he would gain a bride, a hanyou princess no less, the daughter of Touga. So far he so no flaws or displeasures about this alliance, "So, you'll leave my people alone, unless for meetings or emergencies you won't step foot in my territory again. And in return for our alliance, you'll offer your sister's hand in marriage" Kouga questioned. His people would be safe and protected, they wouldn't be threatened and Sesshoumaru would be an alliance to him. However, Sesshoumaru wouldn't show his face unless necessary, he wouldn't pester them, but he would be left in peace with his bride.
Sesshoumaru smiled "Indeed" pleased that the prince was seeing sense. He had expected him to be possibly short tempered and irritable but aside from being cautious he was reasonable.
Kouga hummed, he'd heard tale of InuYuki, the half demon, mostly that she caused trouble for other demons, fiery, he liked that in a woman. She had distanced herself from her brother as much as possible and he didn't blame her. He wondered where she resided and what she had done with her life since being disowned by her brother. But he was intrigued to see his future wife, what kind of woman he was going to be involved with "Alright Milord, I'll bite, looks like I'm a married man now" he smirked.
"Prince Kouga, will you really marry his sister? A woman you've never met?" Ginta asked, Kouga had rejected such situations in the past before, he was no hypocrite. If he married his sister he would be going against what he stood, as well as upsetting many women he had rejected in the past. He had no idea what kind of woman the demons sister was, he seemed eager to give her away which aroused suspicion from them both. Kouga was more than a leader to them he was their best friend.
"Aye, the gamble of a half breed is dangerous, they may come out looking monstrous, or they may be beautiful" Hikaku explained. The gamble of mating with a demon, when when the two were in a loving relationship was the consequences of their courtship. Whether their child would appear as a monster due to the demon blood, or whether they would be beautiful and humanoid. Sesshoumaru had explained she was lovely, but he could have been lying to entice them.
"Sesshoumaru is many things, a liar he ain't. I've heard tale of this InuYuki, she's said to be a lovely maiden. Given her ma was a princess, she'll have some good genes, royal by blood on both ends. I'll have to meet her in person" Kouga explained. He was able to tell when people lied to him, he had always listened to his instinct, it was a trait he was proud of. Sesshoumaru knew offering a bride that was distasteful to them would be a huge insult to their tribe. Though he had his secrets, Sesshoumaru hadn't lied to them. InuYuki was said to be beautiful, resembling her brother immensely.
"How will you find her" Ginta asked, he hadn't revealed which village she resided at which would lead to a wild goose chase. Kouga would have to hunt down his bride without ever knowing where she was. Sesshoumaru was playing games with them which he didn't appreciate. There was no way she would reveal herself after years of keeping herself hidden for her own wellbeing. She wouldn't risk her safety for the sake of a bribe.
Kouga sighed, unfortunately being a Hanyou it brought out ignorance and hatred. She would never belong in either world, making her an outsider. Humans would fear her for her demon blood, seeing her as a monster and bloodthirsty. Demons would see her as a weakling and soft, hunting her for sport. "Not many villages would accept a demon among them, let alone a princess. So it makes it easier to narrow it down" he sighed. She would never belong in either world, kindness from demons was uncommon but not impossible. Looks like he was going on a journey.
Kouga dashed through the trees like the devil was on his tail, the wind whipping past him, his eyes scanning for danger, smelling for other demons. He'd been running for hours, but he'd made good time and he was pleased he had made such good time. He could hear villagers, locals, animals and even some lesser demons, all whispering. He just hoped his presence in this area wouldn't cause any unwanted attention, it was the last thing he needed.
"What's that wolf doing here?"
"Isn't that Prince Kouga of the Eastern wolf tribe"
"What is he doing in the village of humans?"
Kouga growled, this is what he hated about being a prince, though all demons whispered and gossiped, when one was of royal blood or a DaiYokai, unwanted attention is more fervent. He couldn't travel anywhere without someone speaking about him, it was how so many new he was seeking a bride and flung themselves at him. Bombarding him with offers he had no interest in, forcing him to marry despite his disinterest. He soon came to the borders of the woods, he could smell humans like a pungent smoke, but there was something beneath it. A sweet smell, like spring blossoms and sweet fruit, was this her? The Daiyokai princess? He leaped into a tree, hiding among the leaves, resting on the branches as he observed the villagers from afar. Old, young, all of them gathered together, elder village couples, couples and children, not a care in the world and unable to sense him. From what he could tell it was a poor village, not poverty stricken but certainly not wealthy or making decent income. Their trade wasn't great and they didn't have a lot of livestock. His eyes roamed the village, seeking this infamous princess and priest, trying to find his targets, hoping he hadn't come all this way for nothing. Sesshoumaru had been vague with the location so he had to follow his senses to find her. Sesshoumaru had come to him with a bargain and he needed to see if this was worth his while. He then caught her scent, strong and powerful, it hit him like a wave, overwhelming him and dragging him away from his thoughts. His eyes wandered around until he caught sight of her, his heart fluttering in his chest, choking on his breath. A young Hanyou, definitely female, he could see the similarities immediately, she had the same silver hair as her brother, falling to her lower back and ending at her behind. It seemed they were both the spitting image of their late father, she was adorning a red robe, lace hems around the sleeves and skirt, an inner white robe and a cat bell choker on a red string, her lips coloured with red rouge. She had piercing amberish golden eyes like her brother, her skin lightly tanned, fluffy ears sat atop her head. She had a lovely body, slim toned legs, a shapely slender figure and an ample bosom. Sesshoumaru calling his sister lovely didn't do her justice, she was stunning, a blossoming demon with alluring looks that would draw any man to her. If her scent was so seductive, he wondered what kind of person she was. He'd been skeptical about accepting her as a marriage partner from her brother, but she was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen, wild, passionate and stunning. His tribe would happily accept her as one of them, he couldn't wait to tell his people of this.
"Where are you? I can smell you" she snapped abruptly, dragging him from his thoughts and back to reality.
Kouga hummed, she had a keen sense of smell, as expected from her potent lineage, she had sensed him before he had even said a word. He found himself smiling at that, she had acute senses and had obviously learned how to use them living alone for so long. He wouldn't show himself that easily, he leapt from the tree, running through the forest as fast as his legs would carry him, but remained close to the forest edge. He wasn't so eager to escape and he wanted to test her, to see if she was as strong as her brother, wondering if she would take the bait. He couldn't help but laughing to himself, making her chase after him. Wanting to surprise her, just to see the look on her face when he caught her. He could smell her getting closer, hear her running after him, her feet speeding through the grass, he then turned on his heels towards the village, towards the edge, so he wouldn't hit the temple. He sped out of the forest edge, leaves on his heels, zooming through the village border before he reached the edge near the rice fields. He then spotted her from the corner of his eye, unsheathing her claws and ready to attack him, though a claw mark from her would hurt, it would heal easily enough. It seemed she was eager to start a fight with him, despite never once threatening her, he then turned on his heel, catching her by surprise and smirking at her.
InuYuki panicked, what was this idiot doing? All the demons she had faced in the past were eager to preserve their lives from her claws, running with their tails between their legs. But this guy had played cat and mouse with her, now he was facing her without hesitation. Did he want to die? Kouga grabbed her wrist, catching her off guard, her skin was soft to the touch. Her wrists were so small and delicate, her hands half the size of his own, "Nice to meet you princess" he teased. For someone of royal blood her personality and nature surely didn't reflect that, was that what annoyed her brother so much?
InuYuki blushed, who the hell was this guy? First he watched her from the tree's like some kind of creep, then she made him chase him and now he was being flirtatious? Was this guy crazy or stupid? But she was curious of his true intentions, how did he know he was a princess? How did she know where to find her? She knew she was infamous among the demon world for being an unusually strong Hanyou, but more so for being the bastard sister of Sesshoumaru. She had a lot of enemies and she had been able to evade them until now "Who? what the hell do you want with me?" she snapped.
Kouga smirked, she was even cuter when she was angry, the way her cheeks flushed like a flower, her eyes intense and wild. She showed no fear and held her guard, something he respected and admired. She would make him an amazing wife "I'm your fiancé, nice to meet you" he smirked. She would fit in well with the pack back home, she wouldn't need to restrain her temper or act all ladylike around him. InuYuki froze, her cheeks flushing pink with embarrassment and shock, trying to take all this information in at once. Just what was happening? Who the hell was this guy? Did he say fiancé? Since when? she had made no arrangements for a political marriage. She knew all the men in her brothers political circle were as snobby as him, seeing her as beneath them and wanted her purely for status. They would mistreat her behind closed doors and use her as a statement. She refused to live like that. She had been abandoned by Sesshoumaru, fended for herself and then settled in this village and fell in love with Kichirou. She'd made sure to keep as little contact with him as possible, he only ever appeared on occasion to remind her he existed. Who was this guy and what the hell did he mean by this? "You're even cuter when your embarrassed" he hummed, her cheeks matched the rouge of her lips and the colour of her kimono. It made her all the more enticing, he leaned forward playfully to kiss her, her lips were even sweeter than he thought.
InuYuki blushed, her whole body turning rigid, what the hell was this guy talking about? He was passionate, rough and yet gentle, she could easily push this guy off if she wanted to. Her whole body was in shock and her brain was still processing, she had a fiancé? Had Sesshoumaru arranged this without telling her? More so he was kissing her abruptly? She was being kissed by another man, someone who wasn't her lover. Suddenly, there was the sound of an arrow being aimed, the piercing sound of an aimed bowstring, her ears twitching as she heard it. InuYuki panicked, sensing his spiritual aura, she could smell his rage, she knew what this looked like but she would never cheat on him. She had no idea who this wolf was nor what he was doing in the village. He kissed her so abruptly and she had no chance to react to his advances. She felt so relieved and embarrassed, pulling away in a panic, turning towards Kichirou with a relieved and flustered expression "Kichirou". Putting as much distance between herself and the wolf as she could.
Kichirou glared, relieved his lover was unharmed, he'd sensed another demonic aura near the village that wasn't InuYuki. The villagers seemed worried and explained that InuYuki had chased them down. He had followed to make sure she wasn't harmed, to which he fell upon the scene. He felt a sense of anger and jealousy at seeing another man, let alone a demon kissing her. "I'll make this quick, I promise you, my arrows bite. You will release InuYuki instantly, then explain why you are terrorising my village" he warned. As the priest of the village it was his duty to protect the residents from harm, he would show no mercy if he was intent on pillaging their home. But his patience had been tested for putting his hands on InuYuki. InuYuki yanked her hand away, glaring at Kouga resentfully, rushing towards the priest instantly and standing beside him. She felt so embarrassed and angry, wishing he hadn't seen that, she had no idea what was happening.
Kouga hummed, he could sense the aura coming from this priest, he had never felt a spiritual aura as strong as this before. He wondered if perhaps this priest was stronger than him, should they get into a fight. He had to admit his instincts were going off like crazy, the urge to run, but he had come here on business. There was a dangerous aura pouring from this priest, his spiritual essence was stronger than average priests. He had piercing brown eyes, long black hair that fell to his lower back, partially fastened into a small ponytail around the back. Adorning a white robe and black hakama trousers. A quiver of arrows around his back and bow in his grasp, he was handsome for a human, he could see why InuYuki was drawn to him. No matter what bonds she had formed with this human, a deal was a deal, though he respected she had formed roots here, she was his bride to be. He didn't wish any ill intent on the villagers here and wanted to do this as peacefully as possible, or her brother would come to collect her and be less civil about it. Kouga smirked, he folded his arms across his chest proudly, he wasn't scared "My name is Prince Kouga from the Eastern wolf tribe, I've come to claim my bride. I was arranged to marry her in an alliance, this is beyond human comprehension and arrangements" he explained. He like InuYuki was of noble blood, they were both royals, he understood the dynamics and tier system of demons. Kichirou had no idea of the complications he had involved himself in by falling for a Hanyou like her.
Kichirou raised his eyebrow, InuYuki had told him of no engagement, unless she was trying to escape it. He knew she had many secrets from her past life she didn't like to talk about which he respected. But something in his gut told him to approach this subject with caution, he had no idea of who this man was, but he didn't appear to be lying. But he was distrustful, this man was a stranger, he could formulate lies and even use trickery to get what he wanted. He was a royal demon, meaning he was stronger than average demons, and if he slayed the prince of the wolf tribe he would invite trouble. "Since when was this engagement decided? InuYuki hasn't conveyed any such arrangement" Kichirou questioned.
"I've been looking for a bride for a while, but I've never found a woman who I was drawn to. InuYuki meets my ideals for a future wife, I've never met another woman like her. But it so happens that her brother did visit me recently, asking for me to accept her hand in marriage" Kouga explained. This meant he no longer had to worry about bride suggestions, many letters and suggestions of recommended female wolf demons who would make a suitable bride. No longer would he be pestered by the elders of his tribe or others about whom would suit him best. They never met his taste, they were all too happy to please him, to obey and be submissive to him, that wasn't what he wanted. InuYuki was wild, she followed her heart and she rebelled against her brother. He knew from the moment they met she was the woman he wanted.
InuYuki growled, so her brother was behind this as she expected, yet again he tried to dictate her choices, bring her into the demon world and make her acceptable. When would he stop meddling in her life? She had always been an embarrassment for him, something shameful, a half breed, yet here he was trying to set her up with another demon, which she hated. He had always shamed her for her human parentage and he would happily assure that she married someone who would weaken the human in their bloodline. "So what? You come intruding into my home, play games with me and then suddenly convey that I'm your fiancé? I'm happily taken mutt!" InuYuki snapped. She didn't want anyone else, she wasn't fickle and she wasn't a cheat, Kichirou had earned her trust and love, she felt safe with him. Kichirou shifted, he would fight for InuYuki, they had been bonded over loneliness and genuine love for one another. The same way he felt isolated from people due to his powers and duty as a priest, she felt isolated due to never being able to feel accepted in either world. She had changed the way he looked and demons, how much she meant to him and how happy she made him. He had never considered marriage until he met her.
Kouga smirked "Believe me, don't think your brother won't handle this guy. He won't take a rejection from my tribe well, this is bigger than you think. I'll be back princess" he winked. No matter how much she loved this priest, even if she saw it as them mated, that this man was her soulmate. Her brother would do whatever he could to separate them and make sure she remarried a demon. He would do whatever he could to assure she married a demon. At least with him he would treat her well, he would marry for love and she would be treated as equal. He would never hurt her, mistreat her or disrespect her. But he would leave her in peace to consider, disappearing into a cloud of dust.
"What the hell is this? He thinks he can do this to me? Neglect me ever since I was a child and then spring this engagement on me?!" InuYuki growled. She had been pacing around the hut for a good few minutes, growling under her breath and holding back her urge to punch something. She hated this, how could he do this to her?Using her as a political tool. When her mother died, she hoped she still had family, someone who would care for her, but all she was met with was cruelty, neglect, abuse and hatred. The only family she had left in the world and he did nothing but mistreat her, she raised herself, grew up alone and felt like an orphan. She was shaking with rage. Kaede watched nearby, he had heard from his brother about the wolf demon who had kissed InuYuki and made advances on her. Observing the village and then claiming InuYuki as his bride to be. He had never made himself known until now, unless it was a coming of age matter. He felt so bad for her being put in such an uncomfortable situation, but more so for his brother whom was her husband.
Kichirou frowned, he knew in terms of the world of demon politics he wouldn't be involved, he wouldn't be seen as their equal and their marriage would be annulled in their eyes. The hatred and war between humans and demons spanned centuries, they had always been enemies, rarely did humans and demons copulate and form healthy relationships. He had fallen in love with InuYuki, she was his soulmate and he would love no other, she felt the same for him, but this Kouga guy complicated things. They couldn't ignore it, if they caused any form of trouble and her brother would become involved. From what he had heard of InuYuki's older brother he would be less than civil. Sesshoumaru was a DaiYokai, they were compared to as gods of the demon realm, the hierarchy of the food chain, they were the beings all other demons feared. He couldn't challenge InuYuki's brother or it would threaten his life, but he had every right to protect his lover, his home, his village.
"Kichirou?" she questioned, snapping him from his thoughts. He was being unusually quiet and contemplative, he hadn't said a word and she was worried. She knew she'd hurt him when Kouga kissed her, she knew he was stressed with demons now harassing the village. She felt awful for putting him through this.
Kichirou sighed "The village is nervous, after he has shown up people are whispering. They know he means trouble and sense danger, they worry what will befall of the village. Many know of your brother, let alone the wolf tribe. This may bring gossip" he muttered. Many villagers had come to him for reassurance after Kouga had appeared, terrified that wolves would attack the village, causing him to strengthen the barrier around the village. He knew this would draw negative attention towards InuYuki and people would become distrustful of her. The last thing they needed was gossip that their village would be under attack, people would assume his powers were weakening which wasn't true. InuYuki felt a sense of sadness fill her, it seemed trouble followed her anywhere and she could never escape that, but she hated involving innocent people. It had taken so long to earn the trust of the villagers, to ensure them she was no threat, being welcomed and accepted among them and now this. Now her brother and Kouga had ruined that for her. Kichirou saw her expression and softened, pulling her into his arms affectionately "Gomen, I've worried you unnecessarily, I would never drive you away, I would never blame you for this. This village is your home too. I merely worry for my people, those who cannot defend themselves against someone as powerful as Prince Kouga or your brother" he apologised. He would never let her go, meeting InuYuki was fate, they had been bound together for a reason. He would never abandon her nor turn on her, but the villagers would panic and consider drastic actions. But he had to think of the wellbeing of his people.
InuYuki softened, "No, people have families here, children, babies, roots. The damage by brother, let alone this Kouga guy could do I understand. I just feel guilty at them being dragged into my mess" she huffed. She had helped babysit the children here, she had played with them, befriended them, they followed her around the village regularly. She had helped Kichirou deliver children, mend homes, hunt for food and more. People had formed their lives in this place and now it may be destroyed or disturbed. She couldn't let Sesshoumaru destroy it, let alone Kouga cause trouble, she would protect it with every fibre of her being.
Kichirou smiled, reminding himself of why he loved her, she had such a pure and tender heart. He felt like the luckiest man alive "You have such a kind heart Inu" he hummed. Pulling her closer into his arms and holding her tight.
Kouga stared into space, his mind wandering as he reflected upon meeting his future bride, he was probably laughing like an idiot and making a spectacle but he didn't care. He hadn't known what to expect, but he had to admit, forming an alliance with Sesshoumaru if he could marry InuYuki sounded like the best decision he would ever make. She had certainly inherited her looks from both parents, no wonder so many demons were asking for her hand in marriage so fervently, he couldn't get her out of his head. His mother had always told him as a pup, that he would know who his future mate was when he met her, one look and he would feel his heart flutter, like he was in a dream, all he would see was her. He would feel a pull to her, a connection, the red string of fate, her scent, her presence, just by looking into her eyes. Wolves mated for life, pack members who never abandoned their family. His mate would carry a different scent than other females, like a perfume, a scent only he could smell. When he looked at her she would be imprinted on his mind, her voice too. He would become dazed by her briefly, before everything else would kick in. Primal, protective and loyal, he would respond to her, he had never believed he would find her. In return, his mate upon meeting him would release a pheromone in response, one that only he would notice, the same way a bee would find nectar. She would respond to him by releasing this pheromone, be it subconsciously when he was nearby or as a response to his presence. They were bound to one another, unable to escape and constantly crossing paths. The same way she was in his mind, he would now become prominent in hers, both thoughts and dreams. She would respond to him, her body would remember him. Maybe it was fate that Sesshoumaru had come to their borders, offering an alliance, maybe he knew about wolves and soulmates, unknowingly offering his sister to him. He didn't know if Sesshoumaru had planned this or if it was fate, either way he wasn't complaining. He had been drawn to her scent before he even saw her, like a perfume he couldn't escape, intoxicating and alluring, then when he caught sight of her, he had been lost, he hadn't been able to look away. Every part of him wanted her, needed her, his heart was racing, his hands were sweaty, he was spacing out and unable to focus. The way she effortlessly chased after him, able to keep up, her footsteps so light and swift he had barely heard her. The way her voice sounded, how she growled at him. Her chasing him had been exciting, adrenaline, like playing catch. He couldn't forget kissing her, for a first kiss it had been the most memorable of his life. He'd rejected romance and courtship until now to focus on his clan, but now things were different. Of all the women in the world to be his bride, she was the one he wanted.
"Hey, Kouga?! Are you feeling ok? Did that priests spiritual power make you woozy?" Ginta asked, every since he came back, he'd been in a dreamlike state. He'd holed himself up in his chambers, contemplating and turning away servants. They were worried about him.
Kouga blinked, how long had he been sat here alone, just thinking about her? Was this what love felt like? "Huh? Sorry I... I mean... god, Ginta I can't stop thinking about her" he babbled. She consumed his thoughts, making her one of the pack was a priority. Making sure she was accepted, comfortable and happy among them. She was to be their princess and eventually co-leader of their tribe after all.
"You met her?! The Princess InuYuki? Sesshoumaru's half sister?" Ginta panicked, why hadn't he said anything? This was huge? I mean he knew he was seeking her but he never thought he would find her so soon. He expected they would need groups of scouts to track her down. He wondered how their encounter went, how he found her and how she responded. Given Kouga's dreamy mood he could only assume very well. He wondered how Sesshoumaru would take the news of this.
Kouga smiled dreamily "My ma always told me about meeting my soulmate, how I would know just by her scent alone. Damn Ginta, her scent was like a perfume. She had the most piercing golden amber eyes, so much prettier than her brothers. She's so fiery, hot blooded. She's my ideal woman" he grinned. Her hair was like moonlight, silvery, silky and soft to the touch, her ears looked even more so. Her eyes were bright amberish gold, piercing and beautiful. She was the most amazing woman he had ever met, nothing like his past bridal candidates. He had to have her as his mate, she belonged among them, she would be respected. He couldn't wait to inform the other clans of his marriage, the ceremony that would take place.
"Well, she must be pretty special to make you act like this. We can't wait to meet her" Ginta praised
Kouga sighed, Sesshoumaru had been vague on the details for a reason. "Yeah but now I know why Sesshoumaru is so irritated by her company. He ain't just any human Ginta he's a priest, a damn powerful one at that. His potency was so strong my skin was tingling. My whole body was screaming to escape, if he wanted to he could have really hurt me" he worried. A demon like that, if the offspring of InuYuki was a quarter breed with spiritual powers, it would be an insult to their lineage. Sesshoumaru would never allow it nor would he acknowledge their children. But a priest that powerful would be a threat to Sesshoumaru, he couldn't kill him but he could do some damage. He was right to be cautious around him.
"Is he a threat to our tribe?" Ginta panicked, if a priest was to become their enemy, the damage he could do to their tribe was worrying, especially if he was powerful enough to make Kouga scared.
"Nah, he ain't the type of guy to wipe out demons mercilessly, he could have done some damage if he wanted. But he was real protective over the princess" Kouga admitted. Given the fact that he restrained himself and merely intimidated him instead of attacking him on sight, he wasn't such a bad guy. He'd been protecting his home, his lover, which was understandable. He was only doing his duty, which was warding off demons. But he didn't like Kouga getting close to Sesshoumaru's sister, he still didn't know her name either. He doubted he would hand her over without a fight, given how quickly she ran to his side without hesitation, she would need some convincing to understand her engagement. He was no home-wrecker but she would never be happy, he knew that this would bring her heartache.
"So, Princess InuYuki mated with a priest? No wonder her brother is pissed" Ginta reflected, priests were the sworn enemy of demons and the likes of Sesshoumaru would take that as a personal insult. He wouldn't stand for his sister to marry such a person.
"Yeah, seems he arranged this marriage to separate em" Kouga mused, he hated that her brother was such a stuck up asshole he would mess with his sisters affairs to repair his image. But in the long term, InuYuki would outlive him, watching him grow old and die before she did. It was kinder to marry another demon who would match her life span. He hated to be the wedge between them, but he had fallen in love with her, she was his fated soulmate. Whether she liked it or not they were going to be married.
"So what now?" ginta asked, they couldn't separate them by force, as InuYuki would just attempt escape and it would anger the priest in retaliation. But demon law was absolute and marriage couldn't be annulled if the family head arranged it. Sesshoumaru being the head of the family and lord of the west after their late father meant that unless he said otherwise, she and Kouga were to be wed.
Kouga hummed "Well, she's a cutie and a deal is a deal, I've been looking for my future wife and princess of the wolf tribe. I ain't gonna back down on my soulmate, so I guess I'll have to charm her" he smirked. He knew she was stubborn, so it would take time to court her, win her affections and convince her to marry him. But then he wanted to get to know her, the tomboyish, wild Hanyou princess. He wasn't going to stop chasing her and he wanted to understand her. No other woman would make him as happy as she could, the way she made his instincts go wild and his heart flutter.
InuYuki sat in a field observing the villagers, the scent of flowers filled the air and a warm smile formed on her face, this was her happy place. Being alone to reflect and admire the world in peace, knowing it wasn't as ugly as she remembered it, the cold and harsh one she had known growing up. Here she was free, nobody would hunt her down and she could come and go as she pleased. She was still shaken about meeting that horny wolf demon, she'd faced harassment and bullying when she was younger, but never such a blatantly flirtatious male with charisma. How he respected her boundaries and yet made his intentions clear, aside from the kiss he hadn't hurt her or bullied her. I mean if her brother had his way and she married him, she was sure that it would mean more perverse and intense situations than just a kiss.
She felt her cheeks heat and steam erupt from her head, she had to admit for a prince he was rather handsome, despite his arrogance and flirtations. If only he had a better personality she wouldn't find him so damn annoying, those piercing green eyes, that cocky smirk, he was well built and muscular; a strong demon indeed. He was fast, cunning and powerful, it was no wonder he was the leader of his tribe with such innate skills. He hadn't been afraid to introduce himself and he was intent on coming between herself and Kichirou, none of Kichirou's warnings or threats had worried him in the least. If they had, he certainly hadn't shown it, hiding any fear that she could sense. She was still angry at Sesshoumaru for this, she wanted to claw his face, punch that smug smile of his right off his mouth. She wanted him to feel even a small amount of the humiliation he made her feel. Kouga had said they were engaged, whether it was true or not she was still upset about it, her consent was never given, she was never warned or notified. Shen was dragged into family affairs without her feelings ever being considered. Meaning he would keep pressuring her until she caved and she was forced to leave this village and become his wife.
A sense of conflict forming in her heart, what would happen if she consented and became Kouga's wife? Would she be playing into her brothers hands at the cost of heartache? Was Kouga being sincere or just another flirt? Was this a trap, was it truth? She'd never been this popular with any man before, human or demon. Trying to confuse her and take advantage of her feelings, so she couldn't think clearly. She didn't know how to feel about being pursued by two men, one she had fallen in love with over time and formed a close bond with. Her heart had chosen Kichirou, her soul chose him and she felt safe with him. But Kouga wormed his way into her heart, he flustered her, he got inside her head, his aggressive confidence was rather impressive. She knew he wouldn't give up, she knew he would keep bothering her, he would keep trying to woo her until she caved in. So long as Sesshoumaru was involved, he would ensure the marriage went forward and her old life would be abandoned. The only reason he tolerated her and hadn't killed her as a child was because of their father, she carried his noble blood. She was the key to continuing their family line until Sesshoumaru found a mate, with another demon mate she would have a child 3/4 demon, albeit of mixed blood. Meaning their human genes would be watered down, that was what he wanted, to hide the fact she was a half breed, that he saw her human side as shameful. He'd made it clear to her from the beginning he resented her, that her human blood made her weak, that he never considered her family. She hugged her knees, resting her head atop them reflectively, this was all such a mess and she hated being dragged into this. She was angry at her brother, the situation, that she was so confused. Tears stinging her eyes, her ears drooping, small sniffs escaping her.
"Hey beautiful, why the sad face, I'm sure you look much prettier when you smile" a familiar voice cooed, he'd been able to smell her tears. He could sense she was alone and wanted to speak to her. But he'd sensed she was unhappy and became worried, wondering what was bothering her. InuYuki stiffened, growling lowly and glaring in the direction of the voice, just when she had been thinking about him, he had to appear out of nowhere. Could she have no peace from him? She knew if she tried to run he would catch her regardless.
Kouga stood nearby, his arms folded as he admired her, her eyes were even more intense when mad. He could tell she had been crying, her eyes were red and puffy, he could smell the salt. He hated the thought of her crying alone like this. Wishing he could comfort her in some way. She became frustrated by his presence, knowing his words would get her to bite once again. He wondered if the abuse she had endured growing up had caused her to evade compliments, or she was just used to hearing them from one man, albeit a human.
"What do you want wolf?" she snapped, gripping her hands into balled fists. She was in no mood for games, she was sick of the sight of him.
"I told you princess, I'm your fiancé, I can visit you whenever I want" he reminded her, he had every reason to come and go from this village whenever he wanted. He had no intention of harming the villagers, he'd even told his tribe to evade the village. The last thing he wanted was to be seen as a threat or an enemy, he was here on peaceful terms to see his bride. He wanted to get to know her, see her world and bond with her, seeing the real her. He didn't want her to be miserable their entire marriage, he didn't want her to feel trapped. He had every right to be here, yes part of it was to impress her. But then what guy didn't show off to a girl he liked?
"Yeah well it's a pain in my ass" she huffed, he was making her nervous, the villagers were upset and Kichirou was worried. Though he was driving away any lingering demons with his presence, they had never needed his help before. She was tired of him following her around like a lovesick puppy. She'd never met a more annoying guy in her life besides her brother, was this why he couldn't get someone else to marry him?
Kouga softened, he knew how conflicting this would be for her, marriages often were, but she knew deep down she couldn't ignore this, not for someone as powerful as her older brother. He didn't want to rip her away from this life, she seemed happy here and he could sense it. The villagers welcomed her, she watched over the children. But so would his people, they would make sure she was safe and protected. The elders would treat her well and teach her of their traditions, the wolf pups would enjoy playing with her. The wolves would become familiar with her and guard her just liken they did him. He would do whatever he could to make her comfortable. But he did genuinely like her, he'd never felt this way about a girl before, he wanted to prove his feelings. He sighed, praying this would work or he would look like an idiot "Close your eyes a sec" he asked
InuYuki raised her eyebrow suspiciously "What so you can prank me?" she scoffed, she didn't trust him, she'd close her eyes and end up being kissed again. Like she was going to fall for it.
"Please, I promise no funny business" he begged, he'd put a lot of thought into this, finding flowers that reminded him of her. Not just any regular flowers, he'd had to hunt for hours to find them, asking where they would grow. She didn't have to accept them, but he'd put so much thought into this.
InuYuki softened, she was surprised that he was begging like this, she relented and closed her eyes, wondering what he was up to. She looked into those baby blues and she melted, she couldn't help herself. The smell of something sweet filled her senses, comforting even, causing her memories to flash behind her eyes briefly. She opened her eyes, nearly gasping as she was taken aback, she hadn't expected him to do this. She didn't think he was capable of this, he'd been so cocky earlier she would have thought he would just tease her. Kouga held in his hands the biggest bouquet of wild flowers she had ever seen, cherry blossoms, sunflowers and lilies, they were beautiful, nobody had ever given her flowers before. Cherry blossoms; the symbol of renewal and life, how quickly they came in the spring and yet faded so quickly. Sunflowers; symbolising loyalty, adoration and and of course sunshine. Lilies; the symbol of purity, innocence and rebirth. From what she could perceive, how quickly they had come into each others lives, how quickly his feelings had appeared. But also that he was serious about his courtship of her, that he did harbour genuine romantic interest in her, but that she was sunshine to him. That their relationship was the birth of a new love between them both. She remembered the cherry blossoms her mother grew in the garden before she died, how they looked like falling snow, how she would try to catch them all and one landed on her nose, making her mother laugh. They were so bright and beautiful. She felt her eyes tear up at the memory, not even Kichirou had brought her cherry blossoms before, but then he assumed it would be too painful a memory for her. "I... thanks..." she mumbled, a small smile appearing.
"I managed to make you smile after all" Kouga grinned, he was relieved that she appreciated the gift. As embarrassing as it was, he'd had to ask some of his fellow pack members about flowers, in order to make her happy. He wanted to prove to her that she was truly special, that this wasn't a game to him. He softened, fidgeting nervously "Listen, I know you ain't so happy about this arrangement, believe me I was suspicious when your brother came to me. But, my mum always told me a story when I was a pup..." he trailed off. He hated the thought that Sesshoumaru was messing with him, that he would make them both miserable by ruining both of their lives. InuYuki raised her eyebrow curiously, enjoying the scent of the flowers as she listened to his tale. "She always told me, I would know who my future mate was when I met her. I would know because her scent would be different from any other girl out there, I would feel a pull to her, like a red string. Somehow we would always be connected and she would be imprinted on my heart" Kouga explained
InuYuki shifted, she never expected him to say something so romantic, all demons had different mating rituals but wolves were special. Wolves mated for life, they chose no other mate once they married. She never thought she would be considered special to anyone until she met Kichirou, but now the prince of the wolf tribe was confessing his love to her. "But... I'm a half demon, you know that right? My mum was a human, I'm not like you" she pressed. It was why she had wanted to wish to become a full demon, to rid herself of her weakness, her human blood. So she would no longer be ostracised by anyone.
Kouga shrugged "Not all of us hate humans, I mean I have reason to be wary of them, plenty of humans have killed my wolves while they are out hunting for food. I've never hurt a human unless I have to, if someone beats my wolves I'm gonna protect them. But I've never actively hunted down humans for fun" he confessed. He had never hated humans, he hated intruders and invaders, those that threatened his clan, be they human or demon. He was curious of them but he watched from afar and minded his own business, never bothering them. He knew some other wolf tribes, particularly Ayame of the northern wolf tribe hated humans. Plenty of other demons hated humans and hunted them down for prey. But he had never actively hunted down humans for sport, he wasn't a monster. InuYuki couldn't argue, she was half human, she knew how weak, stupid and naive humans could be, blinded by fear and lacking rationality. The court members who had given her dirty looks, insulted and spread rumours about her as a toddler. The humans who had never let her play ball with them, the same villagers when she tried to find food as a child had thrown rocks and other objects at her.
"Listen, I'm not gonna hurt your boyfriend, I'd never do that to you. But I'm serious about you, just think about that" he pressed, he knew by hurting Kichirou or even threatening him he would lose her trust, she would never forgive him. He didn't see Kichirou as an enemy, a rival perhaps and a threat to his courtship, but he wasn't going to kill him. It wasn't in his nature. But he wanted her to know he did care and he did love her, that much was true.
InuYuki blushed, she sighed heavily "Thanks for the flowers mutt" she mumbled, they would brighten up the hut and once they died she could dry them and hang them for decoration. It seems he was sweeter than he allowed others to know, but maybe that was something he wanted to keep a secret. She appreciated his consideration. It didn't mean he had won her over but she would be more civil with him for the foreseeable future.
Kouga smiled, it seemed insults were part of her vocabulary, even when she was trying to be nice. But then she had faced all forms of adversity in her life, it came with being a half breed, never fitting into either world. But then he'd never had a woman put him in his place before, show such fire and passion. He loved arguing and conversing with her, it was always so much fun. He couldn't wait to tell Ginta and Hikaku that the flowers had worked. I'll be seeing you around princess" he winked, before disappearing into a tornado.
InuYuki placed the flowers in a vase, they smelled lovely and they brightened up the home, gently caressing their petals. She still couldn't help the curiosity of where he had managed to get ahold of them, Kichirou had given her all sorts of gifts and gestures of affection since they coupled. But he had never been able to find flowers like these, mostly due to them not growing near the village, Kouga was able to travel using his demon powers to find these. She knew this would upset Kichirou and cause him to attempt a grand gesture to prove himself. But that wasn't what she wanted, Kichirou never had to prove himself to her. She had chosen him a long time ago, from the moment they met.
"Tadaima InuYuki" Kichirou greeted warmly
"Tadaima InuYuki Onii-chan" Kaede called
"Okaeri" InuYuki greeted, she was glad they were both home safely, she wondered what demons they had been asked to exorcise today. They had been forced to leave the village for training and demon slaying, she was able to protect the village in their absence. They had to be tired and hungry from their travels. She could smell no blood, merely sweat and dirt, as well as the scent of demons. She always worried when Kichirou went to fight, for all his powers he was only human, he could still be killed on the battlefield.
Kaede spotted the flowers and smiled "Wow, did Onee-chan give you these?" he asked. He knew InuYuki loved flowers, she was always talking about her mothers garden when she was a child. However, they couldn't grow them in the village very well, due to not being able to afford flower seeds and the flowers they could collect were from the forest. Did he somehow sneak out and gather them without anyone knowing?
InuYuki blushed, she couldn't exactly express to Kaede that another guy, let alone a demon was courting her for marriage. She didn't want to upset him or involve him in this unnecessarily "I went picking wild flowers and thought they were pretty" she lied. Kaede was very protective of his brother and it took time for them to form a bond, knowing how much they loved each other. If he knew about Kouga he would become worried and upset. The situation was a lot more complicated than he could understand.
Kichirou gazed at the flowers, they were indeed beautiful but none of them grew within the village aside from the cherry blossoms. He was going all out to embarrass him and make himself look superior, hoping to win her over. But how could she not appreciate such things? A demon so devoted to her that he was willing to give her anything her heart desired, all the things he couldn't. Kouga would need to travel to find such bright and vibrant flowers, he was going all out on courtship. He felt a swell of anger form in his chest, intrusive jealous thoughts swirling through his mind like a storm "It seems the wolf prince is serious about his courtship, this is a symbol of marriage" he explained. When a guy gave a woman flowers, it was a symbol of kindness but also courtship, he was intent on making her his wife.
"They were so pretty and I couldn't destroy them, I... I haven't seen cherry blossoms since my mother died" she mumbled, though the village had forests and trees, not many cherry blossoms grew nearby, she missed them dearly. She hadn't had the heart to reject Kouga's gift as it would be cruel, but then so would destroying them. After he told her about his mother she felt a mutual connection, memories of her late mother. Was she wrong to appreciate a kind sentiment? He'd tried to comfort her when she was crying and calmly explained himself. Conveying he wasn't an enemy, nor a threat. He didn't want to harm Kichirou and he was just here to collect his bride. If he wanted to hurt her or the villagers, he had the capability to do so.
Kichirou softened, ashamed for thinking such thoughts. The part of him that was a man, weak and human; jealousy occurred so easily for him. The fear of losing her, of this happiness being taken away "Gomen, I didn't mean to be so harsh, I just... he's pushing boundaries and I'm not appreciative of his presence in the village" he huffed. He shouldn't take his anger out on her, he didn't want to argue and he didn't want to blame her. He knew his emotions were showing, but he couldn't help himself. His heart was on his sleeve for all to see, he loved her.
"I promise, if he was a threat to the villagers I wouldn't hold back, but for now he's harmless" InuYuki soothed, if she sensed he had ill intent, even so much as laid a hand on a villager, she would make him pay. If she sensed he was scheming or tried to cause harm in any way, she would never forgive him. She would unleash her full strength on him and make sure he knew just who he was messing with. Half breed or not she was still a DaiYokai, superior to him in power. She would never forgive anyone who hurt Kichirou, they would rue the day.
Kichirou approached, wrapping his arms around her protectively "He's a threat to me, you're my bride, my future wife. I don't like him trying to steal you away" he pressed. His eyes were tender and conflicted, filled with love for her and yet pain, distressed at the chaos around him. He wanted her close to him always, he needed her here. She'd become so special to him, so prominent in his life he couldn't bear to lose it. A life without her would be empty and lonely.
InuYuki blushed, though she was swayed by Kouga's charms, her heart felt safest with Kichirou. The first person she ever opened her heart to, whom she had truly fallen in love with. She turned her head to kiss his cheek fondly "No matter how charming he is, he can't compare to you" she soothed.
