When Dean comes back from purgatory he feels he has a chance to use his experience there to become a better hunter, make something good out of a bad situation and Sam can relate. But Sam has been there and done that and only his experience can save Dean from going down that dark road too.

In between the scalping and the rack and being used as the devils personal hand puppet it had all become almost bearable. Sam should have known better than to think Lucifer would just stop there because the devil had done something much worse. He had made it impossible for him to ever look Dean in the eye again without wishing he was back in the pit where it was clear he belonged.

Set after successfully averting the Apocalypse, Sam is safe and everyone's happy - the only problem they face is the now human Castiel gracing Bobby's home with a sour attitude to his situation. Teaching stubborn Castiel to deal with a human body in the midst of the search for his Grace is both difficult and increasingly endearing for Dean. AU-ish, progressing Destiel throughout.
