Chapter 3: Growth
It was the morning after they had all found out about what happened to Lyanna, and the family was once again in her room breaking their fast together. Rickard looked at his children and couldn't be more happy or proud of the way they came together when one of them was facing a problem. It just showed him that even though they might not be as close as he wanted when push came to shove, they would bend together and protect each other like a pack of wolves. However, what happened with Lyanna brought a few more problems than there already were.
He sighed as he thought about the plan, Jon Arryn, Hoster Tully and himself had come up with, but with all that happened with Lyanna he would have to back out of the plan so that he could put his entire focus on his family which meant that Ned would not be going back to the Vale and neither is Brandon with the Dustin's, he sighed this was going to be difficult they would not be that accepting of these changes that he would be making.
After they finished breaking their fast, Rickard took a deep breath and called for a little family meeting before they all left to do their duties or lessons with the Measter. They could now talk about everything that had happened with Lyanna and how they should proceed from this point as a family. "Well, here goes nothing," he thought as he cleared his throat and got their attention.
"Well, last night was something, wasn't it?" he said, meeting each of his children's eyes. "And, with that said, I want to say a few other things. Firstly, Lyanna, I must ask that you stay in your room for the time being until we know what is going on and how we can help you properly." Rickard raised his hand to stop Lyanna from protesting when he saw her getting ready to do so. "I know, daughter, this is unfair, but please understand that I am doing this for your safety. I know not how everyone will react to seeing your third eye or whatever else that fruit gave you. So please stay in your room until we know more about your eye and the fruit," he finished, looking straight into Lyanna's eyes.
She seemed quite downcast at that, but then suddenly looked up. "What about my lessons with the Measter? How will I continue with them?" she asked.
"Well, love, Old Nan and I will be the ones to handle all of your lessons from now on..." he trailed off, thinking better of it as he saw Lyanna's downcast face. "But this also goes for the rest of you - I will be teaching you all from now on."
Everyone was surprised, to say the least, hearing their father say that he would take over their lessons completely. While not unheard of in the North, it was highly unusual as it would only happen when the Lord or Lady of the Castle had just one heir, and that never happened. With everything that had occurred, it was to be expected.
"And Ned," he continued, "This means that your fostering with Jon Arryn has come to an end, son." The boy also looked quite sad now. "I know that you are friends and fond of the Baratheon boy, but it is time for you to get to know your blood siblings. I was wrong not to have you visit since you couldn't get to spend time with your brothers and sister, so this will also allow me to teach you how to run not only a castle but the Land as well. The same goes for you, Benjen. Brandon, from this moment on, you shall take your role of heir seriously. I expect the best from you, son."
They were all quiet since none of them had even expected their father to react like this to what happened the night before. This man who loved them had failed to show it, for the most part, ever since their mother died. So between the stories of his and their mother's childhood last night, and this in the morning, it was a little bit surprising, to put it mildly.
Benjen was the first one to recover. "Father, are you saying that Ned will be coming back for good this time? Will we all get to learn from you now? And will you be spending a lot more time with each of us? If you are, who will be in charge when you are with us?" He asked in rapid succession, his expression bewildered.
Rickard looked at his youngest son and his eyes softened. Out of all his children, Benjen was the one who he had neglected the most, the one who was always the last in his thoughts. Sometimes, Rickard completely forgot about him - but that was all about to change.
"Yes, son, it does mean that Ned will not be going back to the Eyrie. And yes I will be spending time with each of you, and also teaching you everything that my elders taught me when I was your age. As to who will be in charge while I am teaching, it will be either Brandon or Ned or you, Ben." This shocked them all, seeing that he would let them have the run of not only Winterfell but also the whole North. They were so startled that none of them were able to reply.
Seeing their reactions, Rickard stood up. "You should all get cleaned, and go for your sword lessons, boys. Lyanna, you will have to go to the hot springs to bathe."
He went to the opposite side of Lyanna's room and pushed the third stone to the right of the bed, which moved to show a secret passageway. "This passage leads directly to the hot springs. This way, love, no one will be able to see you," he beckoned to her, the Stark children were still shocked with their mouths slightly opened as they just sat there without knowing what to do.
Then he turned away and walked out of the room. When he closed the door, he looked behind him. 'Hmmm I think I may have broken them,' Rickard thought as he closed the door.
As soon as the door was shut, it was as if they had snapped back into reality. Lyanna was the first to break the silence when she pointed to the passageway. "Was that always there?" she
asked.
Weeks Later
It had been three weeks since Rickard started on everything which he had promised his children. He handled all of their lessons, even though, at first, it was hard to figure out everything, but eventually, he did. In the mornings, he would be with Lyanna while Brandon performed every one of his morning duties, Benjen and Ned going through their sword training. As the day progressed, they would each switch, then they would have supper in Lyanna's room while they went over the happenings of the day. This gave Rickard and Lyanna a chance to learn about everything that happened in the castle.
Through all of that, Rickard had noticed a few things with his children. At first, it was only small things - like wherever Benjen went, the trees or flowers seemed to look a lot greener and healthier, or whenever Brandon was angry and near fire, it would get brighter and burn hotter, and the wind's current would be stronger too. The temperature dropped when Ned was upset, and then there was just himself - he had never felt like this in all his life. It was like he was in his prime again, no, not even that - he felt like he could take on the entire seven Kingdoms and Essos since he felt more energetic than he was used to.
"Now then," he announced loudly, getting his children's attention, "What have we learned in the past three weeks?"
The four of them looked at each other and then at Brandon who cleared his throat. "Well, Father, I learned how much Ben over there loves the sound of his voice."
"Hey!" Benjen protested as they all laughed.
'Oh Lyarra my love how I wish that you were here to see this' he thought with a fond smile on his face as he looked at the smiling faces of his children.
"But seriously though, father, I learned that you do a lot during these three weeks. You have the responsibility of everyone who not only lives here in the castle but in the entire North. I never knew how much pressure it was, and now I get why you were so hard on me - to stop all the fucking around I have been doing. It was because you were trying to prepare me for all of the responsibility that I would inherit from you. For all that I have put you through, Father, I am sorry," he apologized looking deeply into his father's eyes. "And thank you for being patient with me throughout all these years," he finished.
"It's quite alright, son - 'tis but youth and the wolf's blood." Rickard smiled at his son, very proud and forgiving of his son since he had learned from this experience.
Ned was the second one to follow after Brandon "Well, I learned that Bran truly doesn't know anything, I mean, like, nothing at all!" He mumbled, making everyone laugh again. "But truthfully, I have learned that it is important to keep our relationship with all of our bannermen, and how important it is to manage our grain storage. As Bran said, I know how crucial it is to manage our people, because you are responsible for a Kingdom full of people who look to you for guidance and leadership, to be their strength when they have none, to an ear when they need one, and to find solutions when they have problems. And that can be a lot, but also at the same time, you get this satisfying feeling when you get to help them. It's quite gratifying when you see what you have said in effect." He said, with a small smile on his face.
Rickard nodded beaming at Ned even though he did not teach Ned how to run a castle or a kingdom, for that matter, it was good to see that he was able to adapt to the whole situation, and he was proud of him for the way that he was able to manage everything that was thrown at him. But Rickard was also worried about Ned's honor as he took it to a very high degree, which was something that Rickard would have to teach Ned that honor was not everything because not everyone will be honorable as you are.
Benjen leaned forward since he was next. "Well, I learned that it is not as easy as I thought it was to lead people and also to quickly adapt to situations or find solutions to the problems that I would face. It's difficult to be able to think on my feet and to think outside of the box as well as keep the books of the castle in order since they matter to our land but I learned to quickly adapt and think on my feet. And the fact that you get to see what you said in effect and help people. Also, it's a very good thing to pay people, and well, as that will not only show that you value them but also that you appreciate them for all the hard work that they do for us. It's nice to give them loyalty because they return that to us, and people like it if their leader recognizes them for the work that they do. Communication is important when you are the leader." he decided, resolutely.
Rickard nodded in agreement with everything Benjen had said and was honestly surprised that he'd noticed all of that. And the fact that he came up with a method to increase food production had been a very good surprise and one he couldn't wait to see the results of. He sighed as he thought about how much time and effort he had put into making sure that Brandon was ready to take over after him as the Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North, but seeing that his other two sons were able to show their leadership skills when it was needed made him glow with pride. This realization made him realize that he had been raising his children wrong and that he should have paid more attention to all of them instead of just focusing on one son and his schemes.
They turned to Lyanna who was looking back at them, slightly confused. "What?" she asked.
They glanced at each other, then looked at her again. She sighed. "Well, I didn't learn as much as all of you in terms of leading and running a castle, but Father has been teaching me everything that he can, and Old Nan has been teaching me the old tongue. Also, Father and I have been working on the mastery of my powers - like this," she said and lifted her hand.
Instantly, fire covered her entire palm, making her brothers gasp. Lyanna and Rickard smirked. "So there is that, and this as well," she closed her eyes and then opened them to show her eyes as they were originally when they found her in the forest. Veins protruded from her temples and ranning to her cheeks, then she turned it off abruptly so her eyes turned back to normal. "Well, there's still a lot more to train with my powers, but Father has been training me in swords, politics, statecraft, and how to lead and manage people and Old Nan has even been teaching me how to treat wounds," she grinned.
Rickard leaned back and looked at his children as they compared what each of them learned with each other and teaching one another what the others did not know he was pleased with them. They'd all learned something new and done it not only together, but also individually. That they were able to do so many things was truly surprising, and it showed him that he had been a fool to only concentrate on Brandon for so long, ignoring his other children. It was something that he regretted but was now working to change. "Well, given all that you guys have learned, I am very delighted and proud of all of you. I did not know how you would do when I gave you these lessons, whether you would do good and show me that you are all more than capable of leading or you would make a mess and then try to clean it up thus making an even bigger one. But I have to say that not only did none of that happen but you all surpassed all of my expectations and did it so much better than I could have ever thought it done and for that, I am very proud of you all." he said making all of his children smile and their chests swell with pride at the praise.
Elsewhere
He rushed through the corridors he had to get this letter to his teacher/ mentor before the other Arch Measters saw it because of the did then they would try everything in their power to make sure it does not grow to make sure that this power does not grow as they did with the Targaryens, the Martels, and somewhat the Starks, so he had to get this to the only man in this entire tower who could and would understand the importance of this letter.
He turned a corner to bump into someone who was turning the corner as he was making him stumble back almost losing his balance but he quickly regained it, he looked up to see a thick neck and strong-jawed, short, and squat man with enormous hands, a thick chest, and a hard ale belly. He has white hair coming out of his nose and ears and has a beetle brow, his nose looks like it has been broken more than once, and his teeth are stained red from chewing sour leaves.
"Arch Measter Marwyn," he said
"What is it lad where are you off to in such a hurry," Arch Measter Marwyn asked as he helped the young man regain his balance.
"I was on my way to you measter," he said as he steadied himself"I was on my way to see you Arch Measter."
"Me?" Marwyn asked looking puzzled as the young man nodded, as while yes he is his young apprentice and he knows him well he had never seen the boy in such a hurry before. The young apprentice nodded and looked around the hallway first before grabbing the Arch Measters hand and putting the letter in his hand.
Marwyn looked at the letter in his hand and then at the young man. "What is this?" he asked as he unfolded the letter and read the content of it.
"It is a letter from Measter Welys in Winterfell, I got to it before the others could, and when I read it I knew that you had to be the one to see it first Arch Measter," he said as he looked at Marwyn with an excited look on his face.
Marwyn was quiet for a minute as he re-read the letter again and then looked at his apprentice "Are you sure that there was no one there to see this letter arrive?" he asked as his apprentice nodded, making the measter hmm and thought for a second "Well then lad go quickly and pack our bags we must make haste and leave for anyone finds out what is going on in the North" he said as he turned and started making his way to his quarters.
"What about the other Arch Measters what will you tell them?" the young man asked
Marwyn pause to think for a second and then waved his hand in dismissal of what he said "Don't worry about them I will just make up a story of me wanting to investigate something in the North or whatever, and they will dismiss it like they always do." he said with a slight announce in his voice making the young apprentice nod as they got the Arch Measters rooms and quickly started to pack.
By nightfall, they were packing the last of what they would need for their journey North and were ready to set out, but Marwyn turned to look at the citadel."I will prove you all wrong about magic. I WILL show you that it is real.' he thought as turned and got on the carriage.
