Yes, she's back with another update. I hope you are enjoying this as much as I am writing it
Sesshoumaru schemes, Kichirou and Kouga fight to protect their beloved Inu and InuKimi schemes against her son
Lot of drama and a lot of feels
InuYuki stared into the distance reflectively, her stepmothers words echoing in her mind, remembering what she said. Reminding her of how she would always be living in the borderline, never truly a human but never truly a demon either, that neither side would fully accept her as their own. Though her words were cruel and cut deep, they had been nothing but honesty, showing she had some empathy for her stepdaughter. Compared to how Sesshoumaru wished to rip her from the life she had forged and force her into a new one against her will. Her stepmother allowed her to make her own choices, but guided her to the correct one.
"Loving a human can only bring pain"
Her father, the one she shared with her half brother, he had loved her mother, a human had abandoned the world of demons to marry another woman, impregnating her with a child that he never got to see grow up. Dying on the day of her birth, during his battle with Takemaru. He had married a princess born into poverty who later found wealth and became a noble woman, he had fallen for her at first sight after divorcing amicably from his first wife InuKimi. Though his eldest didn't approve of the marriage due to his disdain for humans, he followed his heart and the path that made him happiest. Knowing she would perish before him, that he would outlive her and she would live a relatively short life, knowing he would have to lose her. That the life he had created with her would only be a brief passage of time in his immortal life.
How had he still loved her? How had he opened his heart to her and never allowed his heartache and knowledge to consume him? How had he endured becoming a father to a half breed that he would inevitably lose or never get to see grow up? Had he been able to see the future? How had he stayed with her? Had he even talked about these things with her mother? Her father had so many secrets he kept from both of his children. Knowing she would die before him, knowing his wife as a human had a shorter life span than his own. That the love he felt for her would only break his heart. Watching her age, watching her become decrepit and grow old, having to say goodbye to her. But instead she died relatively young before her time, after the passing of her husband, she was able to raise their daughter until she was a toddler before her health deteriorated. She never even got to watch her child grow up, forced to abandon her daughter and leave her an orphan.
InuYuki had followed her fathers footsteps and fallen in love with a human, she had inherited his weakness as Sesshoumaru called it. She had fallen prey to human weakness and become attached to Kichirou, developing a fondness for him. She could have chosen to find a demon mate and try to appease her family, but instead she rebelled against them. He chose to spend his life with her and gave his for her wellbeing, they treasured every moment they had together, their love only deepening as a result. They would always protect the other, risking their lives for one another, she had shed blood for him, injured herself for him, shielding him from harm. Kichirou had learned much of the demon world through her, abandoning his prejudice, abandoning his ignorance. They had grown because of their devotion for one another. InuYuki loved Kichirou, both of them lonely souls sharing a pure love and devotion for one another. She would never be a demon, but she would never be a human, constantly battling to find her place in the world. Kichirou could never live an ordinary life, have selfish feelings or human needs, forced to live a life of purity to increase his powers.
Kichirou, the concealed, reflective, empathetic and devoted priest she had come to love, despite his colder appearance was a tender and loving man who didn't trust others easily. He lost his parents at a young age, raising his younger brother as a parental figure, training him to follow in his footsteps as a priest. He matured early in life and couldn't falter for a second. InuYuki was the first person he opened his heart to about his insecurities and vulnerabilities, knowing she would understand him. He empathised with InuYuki's hardships, her traumatic childhood and loneliness, how desperately she craved love and acceptance, but shielded herself from further heartache. He was the first person to love her regardless of her past, a pure devotion. But then Kouga was thrown into the mix; something she had never predicted to happen. A fellow demon whom had become enamoured with, intent on coupling with her and making her his bride. The abrasive, impatient, possessive and obstinate prince of the eastern wolf tribe, who was surprisingly loyal, charming and even tender. He always had to speak his mind, he wore his heart on his sleeve, though he had a temper, he was fiercely protective over her and hated sharing her with another man. Refusing to annul the marriage, refusing to give her up. But he truly cared for her, often showing a softer vulnerable side and a sense of awareness she hadn't expected.
She would be forced to choose, but what if she never could? Two men whom had claimed her heart in ways she never expected, making her re-evaluate her entire life. Where she would go from here and which choices would better benefit her or make her happier. Her heart ripped into two, developing affection for both men and unable to decide which one her heart wanted more, which path would make her happiest. She wished her mother was here to give her guidance, she wished her father could mentor her about which choices were correct. He'd been married twice after all, he would be experienced. She didn't want to hurt anyone, she didn't want to break anyone's heart, but nobody would be leaving this unscathed.
"InuYuki? Why are you out here alone?" Kichirou questioned, all of this stress with this proposed arranged marriage, the fact that her life was being ripped apart at the seams. He knew the pressure bubbling beneath the surface would soon fall apart. She was trying to hold herself together and the cracks were starting to show. She had become distant, reflective, defensive, something lingered on her mind, keeping it locked away, hidden deep within herself. Protecting her fragility in order to protect herself from further distress she may experience. Everyone in the village could sense her conflict, everyone knew she was putting on a brave front, and they supported her as best they could.
InuYuki turned, she had sensed him before he approached, his scent, his aura, the sound of his footsteps, her golden amber eyes calm, reflective and yet filled with conflict, the silent emotions pouring through her gaze. She was pushing him away, though she never meant to, she just needed headspace, time alone to reflect. She knew this was effecting him as much as it was her, but she felt guilty at how much she was involving him. How much she was hurting him the worst this situation became. "Kichirou?" she questioned, as if he was a ghost.
"Does something trouble you?" he asked, he knew many burdens lay on her conscience, bottled up inside her and desperate to break free. He sensed she wanted to be alone, but he wanted to comfort her, ease her burdens. She could always tell him anything and he would try to support her as best he could, they were a pair, they were supposed to confide in each other. He knew the heartache of being betrayed had wounded her from a young age, her half brother turning his back on her and treating her poorly. Raising herself in an ugly world she would never be accepted into.
InuYuki shifted, perceptive as always, she could never hide from him, he could always read her, always perceive her emotions and mood so well. She never thought someone would be able to understand her as well as he did. Their hearts were truly connected, the person who loved her as much as he did. "I was just thinking about something my stepmother said" she mumbled, her words being taken to heart. The woman who took her in when her birth mother died, raised her as her own and taught her of the dynamics and laws of the demon world. The woman who could have shunned her, cast her aside and labelled her a bastard. InuKimi had done the best she could while grieving her husband after an amicable separation, still carrying love for her husband.
"Not something cruel I hope" he questioned, all he knew from InuYuki's family was the stories he had heard from her childhood. He was yet to meet his mother in law, though he could never meet InuYuki's biological mother, it was inevitable he would meet her stepmother. She had so far concealed herself alongside InuYuki's half brother, refusing to meet him in person. He found it cruel that her family who should have her best interests at heart were so insistent at ripping her away from the home she found. Judging her for finding a place among the humans when demons turned their back on her.
InuYuki shifted, she knew Kichirou couldn't understand, he was only a human "Cruel yes, but the truth is often painful, she wasn't wrong with that" she huffed. InuKimi had prepared InuYuki for the life she would face from a young age, warning her of the world of humans and demons. They were the only people who took her in, other demons would see her as a traitor, other humans would see her as a monster. Living as long as they had, as Inu-Yokai, they knew the conflict, complexity and hardships of life better than most. They were ancient beings rendered on the same level as gods and royalty. She was born into their family, she was one of them whether she liked it or not, she shared their blood.
Kichirou approached, gently taking her hand and squeezing it, he wished he could wipe clean the hurt that lingered in her heart. He knew InuYuki harboured heartache and trauma from a young age, loss, grief and so much more. She was in incredibly resilient and courageous woman and it only made him love her more "Please tell me what bothers you" he pressed. He would not force her to tell him but he wanted her to know she could trust him. He had shared with her the loneliness of being a priest, the expectations of his duty and destiny. How he could never be a normal man, he could never allow himself to fall into darkness, less he become corrupt.
InuYuki softened, reaching out to cup his face, tenderly stroking his cheek, she had memorised his face into her heart. A face that would haunt her for the rest of her life, following her no matter where life took her. The colour of his eyes, the paleness of his skin, the softness of his lips, the silkiness of his black hair. The intensity of his gaze, the warmth of his smile, one day he would become but a memory while she continued to outlive him. She couldn't imagine life without him, but one day she would have to, one day she would be forced to lose him. Kichirou would always be her first love, the most important person in the world to her. "You know I love you, more than I've ever loved anyone, human or demon" she pressed, she knew it disgusted Sesshoumaru and brought mockery to the demon world, but what she felt was real. Their love was pure, nothing but fondness, admiration and respect for the other, nothing could waver the affection they felt for one another. Kichirou nodded, allowing her to continue. "But I will outlive you, as a human your lifespan is more fragile, shorter than mine" she explained, their difference in species came from such a profound thing, their mortality and longevity. She would continue to remain fertile, youthful and powerful, while he weakened, aged and eventually died. She couldn't bear that, she couldn't face that, the pathetic fragility of humanity, to wither and slowly die. Kichirou blinked, now he understood her sadness, her conflict, why she was so saddened by what her stepmother had said to her. The burden that InuYuki carried as a half breed, the thing she always feared her stepmother threw in her face. InuYuki sighed "She... she told me...loving a human will only cause me pain".
Kichirou blinked, before a pained expression formed on his face "I cannot undo the human condition, only appreciate what time I have with you" he soothed. He couldn't be given more time, he couldn't expand his life nor change his fate, it was already decided for him. He would never love another woman the way he loved her, he would never choose someone else to share his life with. No matter what person tried to sway his heart or alter his decision, she was the only woman for him.
She smiled, she knew Kichirou would never lie to her, he would never betray her "I know", she shared the sentiment completely. He was home to her, the place she felt safest, the place she would always wish to return to. She leaned towards him softly, kissing him tenderly, enjoying the softness of his lips. She loved the way he smelled, how much comfort it brought her and how familiar it was. He was the first person to make her feel safe, the first person to protect her, after she had lost her mother. He gave her a reason to hope again, he gave her a reason to trust again. She pulled away gently, her eyes gentle and calm "I love you, I'll always love you, for the rest of my life". He had her heart and it had always been his, from the moment fate brought them together.
Kichirou smiled, he had procured a special place in her heart and for that he would always be grateful "And I''l love you until the end of my days" he hummed.
Kouga wrapped his arms happily around InuYuki, scooping her into the air with a bright smile, the distance between them was too much. Living on a mountain while she resided in this small village, wishing she was closer to him. The moment they were mated, married, she would live with him in his caves and they would never be apart. After being apart from her for so long, having to handle politics, arrangements and more, he could finally see her in person. Weeks and weeks of pining for her, being distracted, lonely and wondering whether she was safe, whether her half brother was still meddling in her affairs, they were reunited at last. He had never been this deeply affected by his feelings for someone before, even other female wolves had never captured his heart in some way. He couldn't be happier to have such a special girl in his life. "Inu! I've missed you puppy" he beamed, she still smelled as sweet as ever, her ears twitching nervously. This beautiful half demon that had captured his heart, this princess who made him realise what it felt to feel real love.
InuYuki yelped as he lifted her into the air, squirming uncomfortably as he did so, how carefully he held her and yet how firm his grip was. She wasn't used to being touched, she wasn't used to positive affection or affirmation, it took her months to become comfortable with Kichirou showing her affection. Kouga wasn't shy about conveying his attraction for her, about his growing feelings for her, swaying her off her feet. She still appreciated how he comforted her after meeting her stepmother, making sure she didn't feel overwhelmed, but also not neglected. She'd been through so much this past month, emotional burdens she never expected or wanted, forced upon her by her brothers decisions. But she was still hurting about the inevitable choices she would be forced to make, about how she was maturing in ways she never expected. The frustration, the bitterness, the conflict and the loneliness, all of the accumulating at once. How he still accompanied her and respected her boundaries and privacy, knowing when she didn't need to be overwhelmed or pressed too heavily on a matter. Making sure she wasn't alone, making sure she was supported. "Put me down! What the hell is with your energy?" she snapped, she knew Kichirou would be watching, that the villagers would be watching, the speculation and accusations. What was worse was, she was enjoying his gestures of affection and how different he was at showing how much he liked her. He was becoming way too familiar and comfortable with touching her, but part of her didn't hate it.
Kouga pouted, lowering her to the ground but not letting go of her, her toes delicately landing in the soft dirt, gazing into her eyes fondly. "I just get so happy whenever I'm around you" he laughed. The moment he caught sight of her his heart began to race, boyish excitement filled him. He recognised her scent anywhere which reminded him he was close. He had never endured separation anxiety before, so when he was finally reunited with her, the loneliness eased and was replaced with happiness.
InuYuki blushed and sighed heavily, she'd never experienced someone so profoundly excited to be in her presence before. Compared to the calm, friendly relief that Kichirou showed, he was more energetic, impatient and affectionate. She could see his tail wagging, mimicking the way a dog would around someone they loved or cared for, she hated to admit how adorable that was. If they were married, when they were married, would this be the way he would greet her whenever he came home? The way she would be welcomed whenever he returned? "You... it's been a while" she mumbled shyly. She had to admit his absence was felt and she had missed his company, wondering if her half brother had involved himself somehow? The care for his fellow pack members, supplies, hunting, protecting the borders, foraging, any new pack members being born. She remembered he had work to do, politics to take care of, alliances to nurture, things to arrange back at his den, hoping he wasn't under too much stress.
Kouga blushed, he had wanted to wait to do this but it felt right, with Sesshoumaru being sneakier he couldn't be too careful "About that..." he stammered. She was about to have some new introductions that he'd been planning for ages, but it never felt like the right time. With their arranged wedding getting closer and closer, her wellbeing was becoming more of a priority. He couldn't risk something happening to her while he was gone. InuYuki sniffed the air, her ears pricking, the scent of more wolves approaching, had he invited the whole pack? How long had he been planning this? Had he brought some of his pack with him? Maybe some lackey's?. She understood why he would need protection being a prince and all, he had many enemies and many people wouldn't approve of their engagement. Jealous rival females and all too. Though their aura and power was substantially weaker than Kouga's they still had demonic aura, meaning she could easily beat them if she wished to fight back. She braced herself curiously, wondering what could be coming.
Suddenly, two whirlwinds appeared and two male wolf demons appeared before her, something she hadn't expected. The first male wolf demon had grey hair cut into a short buzz with a fluff of black in the front, a few inches short of Kouga wearing the wolf armour of their pack. He had lightly tanned skin and blue eyes, wearing a wolf pelt waistcoat, chest armour and a wolf pelt loincloth. The second had white blonde hair cut into a mohawk, around the same height as the other male wolf demon, he had grey eyes, lightly tanned skin and wore armour with a chain around his chest alongside a wolf pelt loincloth.
Kouga turned to them huffily, this was supposed to be an important introduction and they were making him look bad "About time you idiots got here". Despite their training, despite all their stamina and demonic abilities, they had never been able to keep up with him. Making him wonder if they had been slacking off lately, he always told his fellow pack members to keep up with their training. He would need to chew them out for that. As the leader of the wolf tribe, as their prince, he was responsible for the wellbeing of his pack and making sure they were all properly trained. if something happened to them it would be on his shoulders, his to burden.
InuYuki blinked, Kouga knew these men? These men were from his clan? They were familiar with one another? Kouga never spoke about his friends or family, which had at times left her curious of the people he was closest to. She had no idea if he had any siblings, any living family members, any friends, companions; it was all a mystery to her. Knowing he trusted her enough to bring his friends along with him to introduce her, meant he truly trusted and cared for her. He was touched she meant that much to him, it took a long time for Kichirou to introduce his younger brother to her. The two men approached with bright smiles and politeness.
"Wow, you weren't kidding Kouga, she really is pretty. I ain't never seen a Inu-Yokai as pretty as her" The first praised, of all the female wolves that had been offered as a bridal candidate, none of them could hold a candle to InuYuki, not even Ayame from the western wolf tribe. He'd heard of Inu-DaiYokai, they were in stories, legends even, they were incredibly powerful ominous demons, rendered as gods by humans and demons alike. Capable of taking humanoid form as well as giant white dogs, they were royalty in the demon world, carrying influence and power most average demons couldn't comprehend. Their demon capabilities and potential surpassed many in the demon world, even without the power of the now destroyed Shikon Jewel. For their prince to have found one and been arranged to become his wife, this was an honour that most demons dreamed of, he was the luckiest guy they knew.
"Look at her hair, it's like moonlight" the second agreed, it reflected the light in a way he had never seen, it was so soft, shiny and delicate, gleaming in the light. She would indeed make handsome children with their prince.
InuYuki shifted, blushing shyly and stepping backwards, the way they looked at her curiously, made her feel like a specimen in a cage. Her nerves screaming with anxiety, her body trembling and her stomach in knots. She hated attention directed towards her due to her trauma growing up as a half breed, being different wasn't a good thing in her books. Her whole life she was made to feel like an outcast, her whole life she was made to feel like a freak of nature. Who were these men? why were they so familiar with her, had Kouga told them of her? She knew gossips and rumours were sure to be spreading as this news spread through demon circles. The only daughter of Touga to be married to a wolf demon, it was to become a hot topic. She had just tried to ignore it as much as possible.
Kouga softened his grip on InuYuki, placing an arm around her waist to keep her close but turning to face them, he could smell the peeking anxiety rising in her, the nervousness and fear. He didn't want her to feel trapped or humiliated, that wasn't the reason he brought them, she was a princess and his future wife, meaning their future leader. She was to become one of their pack, a new member of their tribe, the woman that would bear future generations of their lineage. She was scared, she was nervous and she was shy, they were only making her feel worse. They needed to earn her trust, earn her respect and make her feel welcome. "Oi, be nice. Stop gawking at her like that" he warned, growling softly. He didn't want to punch them, but if they didn't respect her boundaries he would, knowing that Inu had been made to feel shitty about herself her whole life. Even though their words were sincere, though they were indeed in awe of her as he had been, she wouldn't know that.
The first male panicked, lowering his head guiltily "Sorry Milady" he apologised, he was just in awe of how powerful and beautiful she was, Kouga's stories of her didn't do her justice at all. This woman far surpassed any bridal candidate they could have chosen for him.
Kouga turned to InuYuki, smiling apologetically "Inu, this is Ginta and Hakkaku, my two head warriors. They take care of everything while I'm absent from the pack. They keep me out of trouble and they will be around if ever you need help" he explained. They were the people he trusted the most, they had his unwavering loyalty and he knew they would never betray him. If InuYuki should ever need protection, guidance or help and he wasn't there beside her, she could always come to them. As much as they annoyed him, he didn't know where he would be without them. He had known them his whole life, they grew up together and had confided in one another. They would ensure nothing happened to InuYuki, and if something did they would inform him immediately.
InuYuki blinked, they were allies to Kouga? His closest soldiers and right hand men? Now their familiarity made sense, so this was why they knew of her, why they knew who she was. They knew about Kouga's arranged marriage with her. If they were supporting him through the welfare of his clan, his arranged marriage would be a priority. Of course she would come up in conversation, it was inevitable, it was an important matter of discussion that would alter their clans future. That she was to become his wife, that she would be in charge of co-ruling the clan, of bearing future generations. One day she would be joining their pack and uniting the wolf and Inu clans, of bringing their families together politically. Then they knew of the bracelet too, the one that symbolised his proposal, the one Kouga forged for her.
The short haired wolf came forward "My name is Ginta, first in command. It's a pleasure to meet you milady, you are far friendlier than your older brother. I'm pleased our leader finally found a woman who can keep him in his place" he beamed. He bowed politely towards InuYuki, showing his respect of her.
InuYuki snorted and bit her lip, holding back a laugh, Kouga's eyebrow twitched but he said nothing.
The second bowed politely "My name is Hakkaku Milady, I'm Prince Kouga's second in command. If ever you need assistance when our leader is absent or distracted, we shall do out best to support you" he smiled. Though he appeared intimidating, he had a soft appearance, and welcoming aura about him.
InuYuki softened, they were well spoken, respectable and well intentioned, she hadn't expected them to be so polite and friendly. She hadn't been prepared for this meeting at all. She wondered how long Kouga had been preparing this, how long he had been arranging this until this moment. This was so unexpected she was caught off guard, she wasn't prepared to make a good impression. She fiddled shyly with her fingers, trying to focus on her words "It's uh... nice to meet you both. I uh... have a vassal, he's not much help, he's kind of a coward. But he's wise and he's good with resources. He served my late father, he's a flea demon called Myoga" she stammered. Though she was supposed to respect him as an elder, he was nothing but a disappointment to her. He'd been by her side since she was small, providing guidance and support as she was growing up. Though his cowardice meant he was often absent and negligent, at times when she had needed a protector he wasn't there. Causing her to resent him as she got older.
Kouga raised an eyebrow, wondering if he had misheard her in some way "A flea?" he questioned, of all the demons to be provided as a vassal, that felt like the weakest you could possibly have, had no other demon been trusted in their family? For a family as powerful and prolific as hers, surely their demonic vassals could be one of more power, responsibility and reputation.
"He worked for my late father, so he serves us as he's honour bound but we have no emotional connection to him. Honestly he's mostly a pain in my ass" she sighed. He often used her blood as a snack, saying how sweet it was due to her demonic potency and human blood. Though it came in handy for poisons and other matter, it was often annoying for her. Everything she knew of her family lineage, everything she learned about the demon world and her family past she learned from Myoga, all the things Sesshoumaru never told her. He respected her as the royalty she was, he respected her in an honourable way and was the only person to referred to her as a princess. Kouga chuckled, he was intrigued to eventually meet this flea demon in person, after all he had surely learned of the engagement.
"Uh... the villagers might be unnerved by your presence...but um... I could offer you a tour" she stammered. They would be nervous about the presence of unfamiliar demons roaming their home. They were previously prone to demon and bandit attacks leaving them on edge, meaning they had right to worry. But she wouldn't let any harm come to them. Many of the village children were used to her and would recognise Kouga again.
"I mean so long as Kichirou doesn't try to chase me off" Kouga smirked, he had a feeling they would be butting heads again soon enough. So long as they both harboured feelings for InuYuki.
Kichirou sat in a field gathering herbs, checking each one before he placed them into his basket, making sure they were all in season to be gathered. It was foraging season and everyone was taking care of their crops, making sure nothing was wasted. He would be brewing medicine for the village, he needed to keep his supply balanced and assure that he was well stocked in case of emergencies. The villagers reliance on him was endless and he could neglect necessary items, delicately picking roots and leaves from his garden to assure none of them were damaged. He always had some form of responsibility to be taken care of, he felt guilty for neglecting InuYuki during this time but he always made it up to her. She understood how much time and effort it took for him to tend to the village.
Suddenly, a shiver ran down his spine, a feeling of panic filled him, a familiar feeling he knew all too well. Demonic aura, strong and unfamiliar, like one he had never felt before, he knew what InuYuki felt like, he knew what Kouga felt like. But these were two new demons he had never faced before, strangers who had come to the village, but for what reason? His heart hammering in his chest, he frowned, gathering his quiver of arrows and bow, carefully carrying what he had collected back to the village. Had Sesshoumaru made himself known? He knew that he was insistent on this marriage taking place and grew ever more impatient. Had he sent someone to attack InuYuki? Make it look like an accident to teach her a lesson on disobeying him? Was this a stray demon attacking the village he didn't know? There would always be demons who would try their luck despite the protection of InuYuki. He needed to assure his brother and the villagers remained safe as to not be attacked by the enemy.
"These are the rice paddies, the villagers often tend to them to ensure they have enough. They also have some cattle, livestock and other forms of food. Though I help out by hunting" InuYuki explained. It was becoming harvest season and people would be gathering and replanting rice to add to their storage for autumn and winter. The animals needed feeding and some would be chosen for food. They had to ensure they weren't killed by demons for food, stolen by bandits or worse. This was their only food supply. Though her hunting and gathering skills helped the village, it wasn't enough to fully restore their food supply.
"She's a fine hunter too, her instincts are nothing to scoff at" Kouga praised, ruffling her head affectionately. She was able to sense him keenly, able to keep up with him in terms of speed and chasing. She always surprised him with her skills, showing there was more to her than met the eye. Her skills would be praised among the wolf pack, showing she was a fine bride to be. She would be popular with the children of their pack, all would be curious about her. She would prove to be beneficial to the pack, she would pull her weight and she would be accepted. They would all do their best to accommodate for her, all make sure she was met with comfort.
"It's a lot smaller than our pack, but then out here bandits are common" Hakkaku reflected, many people would try and pillage for food, see what items of value they could sell for money and often times try to steal children to sell or women they could use. Though they too had known the cruelties of war and gotten their hands dirty, they had morals, they never attacked humans. They never attacked human villagers, they only defended their borders when need be. In such a small human village, they didn't have the demonic wards they did, they were weaker in strength.
"The forests are really lush, you could forage here as much as you needed" Ginta agreed, not just game to hunt, but wild berries, roots, plants, fish and more. A lush wildlife that could feed experienced hunters during the worst seasons and make good medicine. No wonder InuYuki used it as her hunting ground, she had keener senses than humans and knew what to look for.
InuYuki hummed, growing up she had to learn to trust her instincts or it would cost her life. She needed to find sustenance, places to hide, places to sleep, how to survive. She was no stranger to stealing, foraging and more. "I do hunt, but I can't neglect the village for too long" she explained. There were always demon attacks, sometimes villagers got sick or wounded. Sometimes they needed help in the field, sometimes they needed help doing mundane tasks. This place had become her home, this place is where she had formed roots and slowly been accepted. She was as much an integral part of this community as anyone else and needed to pull her weight.
"Good instincts, responsible, hunting skills. You're the ideal wife milady" Ginta praised. So far they had heard nothing negative about her and neither could form any disagreement as to her being Kouga's bride to be. She was proving herself to be more and more of an ideal candidate. No wonder she won him over so quickly.
InuYuki blushed, they were so used to referring to her as "Milady" as if she was already married to Kouga, showing how quick they were to accept her. But that still caused her anxiety. They knew about Kichirou right? Kouga told them about Kichirou. They had to know some of the story as to why she was so adamant as to not abandon the village. Surely they didn't think she stayed here purely out of stubbornness right? The reason why she was rebelling against the arranged marriage. The people she had come to trust, the people she had come to love.
"You should see her with the village kids, she's a natural" Kouga beamed, the way they all trusted her, gravitated towards her. All of them trusted her, all of them cared for her. They all admired her as a mentor figure and enjoyed accompanying her on tasks when she wasn't babysitting them. While their parents worked the fields, she would ensure they came to no harm or got into trouble. She already had strong maternal instincts, she already had a care for children that were not her offspring.
"She'll make an excellent mother to your future offspring" Ginta beamed, she would protect them with her life. From the moment they were conceived, to the second they were born, she would ensure their wellbeing came first. They could imagine the pride of both Kouga and his new mate, first time parents.
InuYuki felt her cheeks darken, her voice dying in her throat, ok this was something she hadn't been prepared to talk about. Children? She knew it was expected of her but she hadn't even discussed it with Kichirou yet. Suddenly, InuYuki's ears pricked, the familiar sharp sound of a bow string, the sound of an arrow being aimed. Panic filling her as she realised what was happening, the scent of Kichirou, his spiritual aura. Then she heard it, the whistle of a purification arrow being aimed, the arrow completely avoiding her but aimed straight for Ginta and Hakkaku, narrowly avoiding them and aiming straight into a tree. InuYuki jumped, moving away from Kouga as she avoided the arrow, the beam of light whipping past her as it pierced a nearby tree.
Kouga frowning, his eyes burned with annoyance as he recognised the arrow, the potent scent of his spiritual aura. They had expected this, they had known that had they visit again it was only a matter of time before Kichirou made his presence known. Ginta and Hakkaku yelped in panic as the spiritual infused arrow narrowly avoided them, panic formed on their faces. They had no idea of Inu's human lover, of her life here and the man she was involved with. "Oi, I get the unwelcomed attack on me, but can you avoid shooting at my men for one second priest" Kouga snapped.
Kichirou slowly stepped forward, a frown appearing on his features, how many times was Kouga going to cause him trouble? He seemed insistent on not announcing himself and expected everyone to cheer for him upon arrival. "I sensed a demonic aura, though I sensed you had approached, I didn't recognise the latter" he stated, nodding at Kouga's friends. He was expected to protect the village, warding of any harm that may threaten the village. He was only following his duty.
Ginta swallowed, he could sense the profusely dangerous spiritual essence of this priest, he was no joke, if he so wished, he could do them some serious harm. There was a silent rage radiating from him, that shot had been a warning one, to know they were not welcome. But he had completely avoided InuYuki intentionally. Why was that? What was going on?
"Wh... who..." Hakkaku stammered
InuYuki stepped forward, she was responsible for their reason of visit. She should have warned Kichirou but she had become distracted by acting as their tour guide "Gomen Kichirou, I should have warned you, Kouga came to visit again but he brought some of his tribe with him" she apologised. Since her brother had arranged this marriage, she had caused him no end of stress and heartache. Kouga was always visiting her, placing himself between them and not allowing them a moments peace. She could understand why Kichirou would feel jealous and neglected.
Kichirou stared down at the wolves, their demonic aura compared to Kouga's was pathetically weak, he could easily take them down with ease. However, he didn't appreciate Kouga's newfound conceit that he could come and go as he pleased. He had made it clear he too shared the same romantic feelings for InuYuki that Kichirou did. He had sent warnings to Kouga not to abuse the trust they placed in him or he would come to regret it immensely. Kichirou had no wavering trust, he confidently knew InuYuki loved him. But he wanted to show to Kouga that no matter how much he may try to show off, he would always be Inu's first love. "These wolves are with you?" he asked Kouga.
Kouga folded his arms "Both are my second in command, I trust them with my life. It's only right they meet their leaders potential wife" he huffed. They would be placed in charge of caring for her when he could not, during their engagement, when he was away in battle.
Kichirou hummed, he could sense a commotion in the village, the residents would become restless and worried by the demon presence. Hoping Kichirou would put them at ease and ward off the demons. All these changes of events would be causing them no end of stress and worry, which he wanted to put at ease. "I do hope you didn't disturb the villagers" he pressed, he had been getting many complaints from villagers lately. They had already been worried when Kouga made his arrival, knowing that he was a full blooded demon. He would chase them off if he had to, making sure that the village was at rest and their fears were soothed.
Ginta swallowed nervously, this priest was familiar with both InuYuki and Kouga, which caused some suspicion and curiosity "Uh... Lord Kouga... who is this man?" he asked.
InuYuki blushed, this was going to be fun, she had expected questions, but not in this scenario. She couldn't hide it, and she had no shame of how she felt for Kichirou. She would just have to put on a brave face and tolerate the backlash. She licked her lips, gazing Kichirou in the eye bravely "He... he's my lover" she stammered. There, now they knew the truth, her reasoning for staying in this village, she was in love with a human. She didn't care if she brought shame to the demon world, she would never apologise for the way she felt about Kichirou.
Ginta and Hakkaku stared in confusion before yelling in surprise "Lover?!" they yelled in unison. InuYuki had been in a love affair with a human? InuYuki frowned, pouting defiantly as she turned her head away in shame, she was prepared for the judgement but she wasn't going to apologise for the love she felt for Kichirou. He was the first person to show her kindness, to earn her trust and treat her well. Ginta and Hakkaku were speechless, InuYuki was engaged to their leader but was involved with a human? Sesshoumaru's half sister was involved with a priest?
Kouga sensed her unhappiness, he knew how InuYuki felt about Kichirou and he would never shame her for that. Ginta and Hakkaku would just have to get used to that. "Kichirou is the protector of this domain and the village, he's a well experienced and skilled priest, a professional with profuse power. He and InuYuki formed a relationship well before my engagement to her. He's in love with her too, but now because of my courtship with her and the engagement, we're both involved" he explained. Kichirou could have used his power against InuYuki or himself at any time, he could have seen them both as enemies and chased them off but he didn't. He took his duty seriously but that didn't mean he harboured prejudice towards all demons. He respected that other demons may harbour InuYuki's affections, let alone use her for political means. But he still loved her as a man and he would protect her with his life. InuYuki softened, he explained it to them without slandering Kichirou, for once he acted maturely and respectfully.
Kichirou lowered his bow, a sense of respect filled him, Kouga could have chosen this moment to be arrogant and insult him but he didn't. It seemed he was an admirable leader and prince to his pack. "I take it this was a chance for your people to meet InuYuki? I would appreciate some warning next time" he sighed. Of course his people would be curious but this could have been better planned and organised.
"Hey, they insisted" Kouga argued, they wouldn't drop it and kept pestering him about it. Insisting they meet their leaders fiance, wanting to meet her in person. He had hoped they would get bored but everyday they got more curious. So he arranged a meeting, though poorly planned just to get them off his back.
InuYuki sighed, most women would be thrilled at the prospect of two men fighting over her but she just found it exhausting. She had no time for fragile masculinity, territorial behaviour or jealousy. The problem with Kouga being a wolf demon was that he was an alpha, or in this case the strongest of their pack and leader. He had a reputation to uphold and he had control over the other wolves. She was already under enough stress with her family breathing down her neck about this marriage. "You can both play nice or you'll both be in the doghouse" she warned. She wouldn't be against teaching them both a lesson with her claws and fists if she had to. Kouga pouted but nodded, he would protect his pack members even if it meant attacking Kichirou in defence. But he didn't want to upset Inu any further so he would behave if it made her happy. Kichirou lowered his bow, placing his carefully around his back, however, continued to glare at the other bitterly. Both men frowning at the other.
Kaede stared down the three wolf demons suspiciously, sitting close to the Inu-Hanyou protectively, glaring them down. He had heard about InuYuki's begrudging engagement and how distressed it had been making her. Now her arranged fiance had the gall to visit the village and bring some of his people too? He knew demons were sneaky, but this took the cake, they really were trying to pressure her.
Kouga swallowed, rather unnerved by the stubbornness of the smaller boy, the way his gaze never faltered. InuYuki hadn't mentioned he had a younger brother or any other family members, this explained further why she was so hesitant to leave, she didn't want to abandon anyone. She had made many connections, formed bonds and been taken in by the people she less expected. Why she cared so much about the village, why she did so much hunting and foraging. Kichirou sat nearby grinding and creating medicine while Kouga and his friends sat opposite, the strong scent of herbs and other ingredients being formed into a potion. The scent filling the hut, though it wasn't unbearable due to the windows being opened to allow airflow.
"So, you're the horny wolf trying to steal by brothers girlfriend" Kaede stated, of all the women in the world he went for one involved with another man? Did the laws of the demon world ignore previous engagements? Or just when it came to humans? Did he often attempt to seduce someone else's woman with his demonic charms? Stealing them away for himself? What about InuYuki's feelings? What about his brothers feelings?
Kichirou snorted under his breathe in amusement, trying to hide his amusement at Kouga being confronted by his little brother. Kaede had no filter, he spoke his truth and often cared little for the consequences, he was still very immature and unfiltered. He had much to learn in the ways of the adult world and being a priest. InuYuki bit her lip, stifling laughter at Kaede's bluntness, cupping her hand over her face as she attempted to calm herself. They weren't used to the attitude of the preteen, the way he cared little for how his actions impacted others. It took a long time for her to earn Kaede's trust and become used to his behaviour.
Kouga blinked, stunned at the strong resemblance between Kichirou and his younger brother, aside from freckles, a rounder face and a more tanned skin tone, the two had very close resembling features. A small ponytail tied around the back of his head with a white ribbon, making him wonder how Kaede would appear as he got older, it was like looking in a mirror. This child was not only very protective of his older brother whom he clearly admired, but he had a strong attachment and admiration for InuYuki, seeing her as family. He seemed to care little for her demonic nature, unfazed by how different they were. He wouldn't lie to the younger boy, he wouldn't spin tales and he wouldn't try to defend himself "I'm arranged to be her fiancé yes" he admitted. Sesshoumaru had arranged for his half sister to be wed to the leader of the wolf pack, it was sealed in writing and was soon to take place. Many preparations were taking place and had already been made. Once a royal of such hierarchy made such a deal it couldn't be broken, the leader of said family was to be respected, it was set in stone.
"So, you saw someone else's girlfriend and decided you wanted her for yourself" Kaede stated, couldn't he choose some other demon to be his wife? Weren't there any pretty demon girls he could court? Any demon girls who would happily take his hand in marriage? Why did it have to be InuYuki?
Kouga coughed awkwardly, shifting in his seat, he knew he looked like the villain in this situation but he was anything but. "Inu's older brother conveniently left out that she was engaged to a human, but yes I do have feelings for her" Kouga explained. He wished no harm on Kichirou and he didn't plan on tricking him to kidnap InuYuki either. He'd never felt this way about anyone before, she was truly a unique person. She was the ideal woman for him, the best mate he could possibly ask for.
Kaede frowned, he didn't like how this guy thought he could uproot her entire life and just take her away "And you think she would be happier with you?" he questioned, how was he any better than his brother? What could he give her that Kichirou couldn't?
Kouga shook his head "She's formed roots here and she's clearly settled in this village. However, I want to make her happy in her own right. I don't want to replace her affections for this village, or the bonds she's formed. I want her to feel accepted and loved among my clan in a different way. Knowing that not all demons are monstrous bullies" he explained. He never wanted to cause her heartache or hardships, it was just unfortunate circumstance. He wanted her to slowly accept him and make the right decision. He wanted her to slowly adapt to being his fiance, to slowly realise he could make her happy and he would never pressure her. He knew her brother had treated her badly, she'd been isolated in the demon world from a young age. But he wanted to slowly heal her trust in other demons and know he wasn't the enemy. InuYuki softened, she knew Kouga was a good man, she knew he had good intentions. He felt guilt about the choices she was being forced to make and what she would be giving up. He could have been a jerk, he could have been cruel but he wasn't.
"My Onii-chan can protect her just fine" Kaede huffed, she didn't need a demon to keep her safe, she didn't need anyone.
InuYuki sighed, reaching out to softly pinch Kaede's cheek firmly "Oi, be nice, stop being such a brat" she warned. He was trying to pick a fight with a demon and he would lose, Kouga was a lot stronger than he was. This was a political situation he was too young to understand. Kaede pouted, folding his arms huffily and avoiding eye contact.
Kichirou ignored his brothers sulking, he would speak to him later about his behaviour and the depths of the situation. But right now arrangements needed to be made. "I assume you wish for InuYuki to be transferred from the village to your mountain pack. Meaning she would need to abandon her life here at the village" Kichirou frowned. Meaning all of her connections would be severed, the villagers would become strangers to her, turning her back on them. She would never be able to return, as if they never existed. He would be forced to say goodbye to the only woman he had ever loved.
Kouga nodded "That is what Sesshoumaru arranged, however we are slowly making preparations for her, wedding gifts have been sent too. But I want her to settle comfortably, I won't rip her from the village" he pressed. Sesshoumaru would escort her himself from the village and he would be less polite about it, he wouldn't let her throw a tantrum. So it was kinder if she had a choice when she could leave and if Kouga or Ginta and Hakkaku escorted her. She would have a lot to expect when she arrived at the mountain, it would be overwhelming for her. But he wanted her to adapt to the life they would share. "As my future wife to be, she's expected to live with me" he reminded.
Ginta pointed to InuYuki's wrist "She's already wearing Lord Kouga's seal of affection, the bracelet he forged for her that she wears as protection" Ginta informed. Kichirou blinked, she was wearing a present from Kouga? First the flowers and now this? How many times had Kouga courted her and made advances without his knowledge?
InuYuki delicately traced her fingers along the wooden and tooth based bracelet with moons and wolves. The gift Kouga gave her. Mating in the demon world worked so differently, engagement gifts were a seal of marriage and once accepted couldn't be annulled. The stakes were higher in the demon world, so much more was at risk. "Sesshoumaru won't give in until I'm located at the wolf region in the East. Believe me he'll do damage if things aren't done smoothly. He doesn't like to be questioned" she mumbled. He would rip this village apart, leaving no survivors and drag her to the wolves den kicking and screaming, ripping everything from her. His punishments that he inflicted onto her growing up, when she was a coward, when she was a crybaby or when she was immature. InuKimi had often shielded her and said Sesshoumaru was far too harsh on her. "I don't want anyone to get hurt, I'm aware of the responsibility I bear as princess of my clan. But Sesshoumaru never treated me as family, he only cares about his reputation. If I remain in the village, he'll only send more trouble my way. If I agree to live with Kouga, he'll settle down and leave us in peace" she reflected. Humans were more fragile, while she would heal from any attack Sesshoumaru sent her way, it would be a death sentence to an average human.
"So he never inherited your fathers fondness for humans" Kouga scoffed, the love that Touga felt for Izayoi was not something Sesshoumaru had ever inherited. Humans were insects to him, he could crush them whenever he saw fit. No wonder he treated InuYuki so badly, he saw her human blood as treachery.
Kichirou rested his chin on his fingers, allowing his mind to wander as he pondered everyone's input. Balancing every option at hand and considering a way to outsmart InuYuki's half brother. They all cared for Inu's safety and they knew the risks of opposing her brother, but what if they could fool him? The engagement was sealed, but Inu had no intention of giving up Kichirou either. "Perhaps we can form some arrangement" Kichirou reflected.
Kouga raised his eyebrow "What are you suggesting?" Kouga asked. What exactly was he planning on offering?
"Sesshoumaru is aware you are courting InuYuki, and even his mother can sense the fondness she has for you. However, they know she won't willingly abandon her life here in the village..." he pressed. Sesshoumaru was aware of the development in their relationship and that would please him, but he would hold that against InuYuki. They knew that she had weaknesses and they would also use that as leverage, making her question herself and make her feel like a traitor. "Kouga, would you be willing to allow some of your wolves to patrol the borders of the village to ensure safety of the villagers and InuYuki. Showing InuYuki has become comfortable with this arrangement?" he asked. The wolves would help deter any outside attacks from other demons and would ward off any stragglers, meaning InuYuki and the village would be safe.
Kouga nodded, the scent would deter any other demons from approaching and they would be able to attack any that tried to enter the village "I have some wolves to spare, Ginta and Hikkaku will be more than happy to come and check on Inu when I'm not able to" he agreed.
"I can inform the villagers this is an alliance of the wolves showing protection of the village. They mean no harm here" Kichirou soothed. He would explain that InuYuki had befriended some wolves, and they wished to show their gratitude to the village. It would be easier to explain than the marriage arrangement. That way the tension would be eased and InuYuki could live her life in peace without gossip.
"Then Kouga can visit the village freely and the villagers will know he's not a threat" InuYuki smiled, she could continue her courtship with Kichirou and Kouga. She wouldn't have to worry about anyone involving themselves. They would know Kouga meant no harm and there would be no further speculation. The two men nodded.
"However, InuYuki will need to visit my domain briefly, during periods to adjust to her future role as my wife. Should some form of accident occur or you are unable to protect her. You promised she would be left in my care within the eastern wolf tribes domain" Kouga reminded him. He knew it was a big adjustment, but it was unavoidable, she would need to get used to it becoming her home. If anything happened to Kichirou she would be forced to relocate whether she liked it or not. She would be welcomed as his fiance, she would be acknowledged as his bride to be. She would have handmaids, elders and many people to care for her and assure her safety. There would come a day when Kichirou couldn't protect her any longer. InuYuki stiffened, they had arranged this together? They had made such an agreement? She clenched her hands into balled fists, digging her claws into her flesh. She hated them making plans without her, going behind her back to argue her wellbeing. She knew they both cared for her but it was still selfish and she hated it.
"She would need only stay for a brief period, a week at least. To meet the other pack members, to see what her life would be like and the people she would be living amongst" Ginta explained. They didn't want her to be thrown into things too fast, she needed to meet pack members, see their way of life and get to know the world she was entering. They didn't want to scare her off too soon.
"A week is reasonable, it would take Inu less time than that to make her way to your domain and travel back to the village" Kichirou agreed. She would be able to make her way using scent alone, he was sure they would send a guide so she didn't get lost or hurt either. That way his worry for her would be eased, she would feel safe in knowing she had protection and someone would be waiting for her. She would know her way back to the village, but someone would protect her so that she got home safe.
"It would throw Sesshoumaru off too, he'd be confused as to what was happening. Believing Inu to have accepted his terms" Kouga pressed. He wouldn't expect her to accept so easily, to accept his terms and start moving to the mountains. He would believe InuYuki had agreed to the marriage and his people would cover for her. Seeing all the wedding preparations take place would confuse him further, not knowing what to make of it.
InuYuki's eyes widened, now it made sense, Kouga was truly cunning, Sesshoumaru would believe she had abandoned Kichirou. As she grew closer to the wolves she would be abandoning the humans, accepting her fate as his bride and moving past her old life. If they kept up this facade it would throw him off the trail and he would stop intervening. "So the wolves would provide protection meaning no outside demons could stray and attack the village. Other wolf tribes would know this village and myself are under the protection of Kouga's..." she trailed off. Kouga nodded, glad she was finally realising the plan. "And me visiting his tribe and staying there for brief periods would cause Sesshoumaru to believe I had accepted the engagement and decided to move to Kouga's mountain" she realised
Kouga nodded, he wanted her to be protected, he wanted to deflect any harassment and control Sesshoumaru may attempt to bring into her life. The sooner she was free of him the better. He hated putting her under any more pressure and at least now she would breathe easier. "I know it's all been a huge adjustment for you Inu, but it might help you accept your own future but also relieve some of the pressure Sesshoumaru is placing on you" he explained. InuYuki nodded, she knew he meant well, she was just afraid, she knew the strength he had and how dangerous he could be. Scorning Sesshoumaru was a death sentence. She knew how strong her older brother was and how far he would go to ensure his plans never failed, how much he could hurt someone. Something she never wanted to see.
Kouga sat in the throne room while his servants informed him on the changes, making sure notes were made and no mistakes took place. He was under a lot of pressure and he needed things to be perfect. He just wondered how InuYuki would react to all this, the armour, the kimono, the caves, the servants. She had never asked for help, she had never had a community in which there was support, she was a fiercely independent soul.
"We have forged the armour for Princess InuYuki, mirroring the type her brother wears and placing some of the heritage of our people into the design" an Ironmonger explained. The breastplate of the armour was of the same material, the shoulderblades however were designed to mirror a wolf with moons. Showing the wolf clans emblem onto it. As soon as she was wedded to Kouga, she would wear it all the time.
Kouga nodded, the intricacy of the design, the detail placed into it, all of the hard work placed upon it, it was to be admired "Excellent". He could imagine Sesshoumaru's anger at such a piece being made for her.
"However, we know you have conversed with Princess InuYuki of her late mother Izayoi" the ironmonger explained, the young princess had lost her mother as a child to which they all empathised. Knowing a mothers love so briefly and never having that nurture as she was growing into a person.
Kouga's gaze hardened, InuYuki's human mother of whom she was very close to, the last person to show her affection. It was a sensitive subject to InuYuki and one that they would tread carefully with "Yes".
"We spoke to the seamstresses of our clan and we have come up with a design we see fitting of her becoming your wife" they explained. Much discussion had been made so it would be fitting to their new princess, one that was unique.
Kouga nodded, if the design was bland, if it was insulting or mocking in any way, the seamstress would be punished and a new one would be made to replace it "Bring them forward" he asked.
A female elder wolf and a younger female wolf stepped forward, delicately holding a package wrapped in cloth "Prince Kouga, we thank you for trusting us with this bridal gift to your future mate" they thanked. It was an honour to be asked personally to design such a present for the wife of their leader. Kouga nodded. They carefully unfolded the package, revealing a pale pink kimono, resembling the colour of her late mothers. "The outer lining of the hem has green, yellow and purple, as had her late mothers. However, we have implicated some design into it, a leaf illustration on the green, small flowers on the yellow and moons on the purple" the elder explained. All of them were embroidered in shape no pattern, just line-work and subtle. Kouga smiled, they had truly put plenty of thought into this, making sure memories of her mother would be treasured; InuYuki would be pleased. The younger wolf delicately traced her fingers along the robes "As you can see the outer layer is a soft pink to resemble the same colour. However, we designed it with cherry blossoms instead of Camellia's like her late mothers. Choosing hues of darker and paler pink colour. As a message of her new life within the clan, the death of her past life and the beauty of all that is to come of her union with you" she explained.
Kouga hummed, this had all had so much thought put into it he was pleased, InuYuki would suit it perfectly and it was the perfect homage to her mother. He couldn't wait to see her wear it "Thank you, I shall inform her of this new gift, however, some changes have been made in her agreement" he explained. The wolves nodded, eagerly listening. "We shall be sparing some of our wolves to patrol the borders of the human village InuYuki is residing in. It shall deter attacks from our enemies and rogue demons, ensuring her safety" he smiled.
The wolves nodded "Yes Milord"
"She has agreed to come and visit their clan, she will stay within a week given she's still adjusting to our engagement. She will be treated as an equal, her boundaries will be respected. If she's to become one of us, she is to be treated with the highest respect" Kouga warned. She would be scared of her treatment while visiting, worried of their judgement and would be anxious. She would be in a strangers territory with no idea of what to expect. He wanted all of them to understand she was not to be overwhelmed, not to be mistreated and to be treated with the highest respect.
The wolves perked up, their eyes wide, shock and excitement filling them "We will be meeting our leaders bride? We have heard so much about her! We cannot wait to meet the girl who stole our leaders heart. For to be loved by you is the highest honour and we shall do our best to make her feel welcome" the younger female praised.
Kouga smiled "You may be on your way, but I shall take the kimono and place it into care" he smiled, taking it gently from them to be stored away.
Sesshoumaru stood within the throne room of Kouga's cave, he had stayed away while he focused on other politics but he hoped nothing had caused disarray in his absence. It had been months but his sister hadn't yet married the wolf prince and he was becoming impatient, he had half a mind to attack the village and drag her kicking and screaming to the wolves den and oversee the marriage. He knew she was sulking, she was intentionally disrespecting him and trying to make things as difficult as possible. He learned that Kouga had gifted her a bridal trinket, showing his intent on marrying her, meaning she was now legally his mate; however, she still resided within the village of humans. Just what part of an engagement did she not understand?
"Lord Sesshoumaru, it's been a while since you've graced my mountains with your presence, what do I owe the honour this time" Kouga greeted. He had the same condescending air and entitled attitude that he remembered. Now that he knew of how badly Sesshoumaru had treated his half sister, he felt such rage towards him. He had given InuYuki so much cruelty for her human mother and half breed nature, yet now he wanted to control who she married? No doubt he was suspicious as to why InuYuki wasn't here and why there was no wedding invitation.
"I've come to see how things are developing between my sister and yourself" Sesshoumaru stated, surely Kouga was courting her, flirting with her and trying to seduce her? Using his cunning wiles to make her come to the demon side.
Kouga's gaze hardened, of course he was snooping, he showed her no privacy or respect. No wonder InuYuki was anxious, she had never known a moment of peace her whole life. "I've been regularly visiting the village she resides in, she's accepted an engagement present from me and I've recently had my seamstresses create a bridal robe for her. However, I don't want to scare her off and I'm slowly earning her trust..." he explained. InuYuki's trust was the most important thing, knowing she was safe and she never had to be on edge around him. Sesshoumaru's gaze became curious, but he seemed satisfied at her accepting his gifts. "She's met my two second in command, Ginta and Hakkaku, they will be keeping an eye on her in my place when I am indisposed with other matters" he explained.
"Reasonable" Sesshoumaru agreed, sending guards to keep an eye on her, so she would attempt no trickery, no deceit and she wouldn't attempt escape.
Kouga shifted, ok so this one would certainly take Sesshoumaru's fancy "She's agreed to briefly leave the village to experience life within the mountains with me, to adapt to her new life as my mate. It's a process we are hoping she will adjust to" Kouga informed him. Though he didn't need to know she would be returning to Kichirou, that it would be temporary and her time in the mountains would only be a week. InuYuki had accepted that she would someday be forced to live among demons once Kichirou departed this world, so she may as well adjust on her own terms.
Sesshoumaru's eyes flickered with interest, a small smirk appearing in the corner of his mouth, though you wouldn't notice without keen eyesight. He was taking the breadcrumbs and falling for the bait, which relieved Kouga. "I see, I'm pleased she's finally being reasonable, she's known for her tantrums and being unreasonable" he stated. He believed she would fight with all her might against the marriage, causing no end of grief. She would protest and demand that it be annulled. But she was finally accepting a marriage to another demon would be beneficial in the long term. Kouga held back a growl, withholding his anger and the urge to bear his claws against Sesshoumaru. Unreasonable? How about heartbroken that he was trying to rip her away from the love of her life? He had no empathy or remorse for how his actions would cause a rift between himself and his half sister, how selfish he was being. No wonder she hated him so much. "My mother will be glad to know such advances are being made, we will of course both be attending your wedding" he smirked. They would see that the wedding had no issues, no intrusions, no accidents and nobody trying to object.
Kouga's eyes flickered with shock, ghosting over his features, though he knew they were arranging the marriage, he didn't believe either of them cared. Was this purely to be because of status or pride? Why would they wish to see InuYuki being given away to another demon? They would be attending the wedding? How had none of his people warned him about this? Or perhaps Sesshoumaru wished to drop this on him last second to see his reaction? They really were scheming weren't they "Honoured guests indeed, we will do our best to put on a wedding to be proud of" Kouga stated.
Sesshoumaru reflected on the changes occurring within the engagement of his sister and the wolf prince, knowing things were going smoothly. He knew had he kept his distance, InuYuki would persist on shaming their family with her involvement with humans. He noticed the box containing the wedding kimono, anger rippling through him when he saw it resembled Izayoi's, taking homage to her late mother, the human princess. The woman whom had come between his parents marriage and led to the birth of his half sister. However, he'd also heard of the wolf armour being made for her as the wife of the wolf prince which pleased him. Meaning they were showing respect to his clan, but discarding her past. As well as their plans for her to visit the wolf tribe for a period, she would be absent from that human village, unable to protect them from demons. It would leave it largely unprotected from attacks. Now was his chance, he could finally sever her ties from the human world and make her see sense. InuYuki had spent too much time around the humans, forgetting her demonic ties, that she was not a human. She would never belong in either words, constantly in the borderline, she was born a half breed. But she would do well to fit into the demon world, knowing her place among them, that himself and his mother took her in when she had no-one. Getting rid of the weakling human bloodline within their family by marrying another demon.
"Milord?" Jaken asked, hoping he wasn't prying, his master was lost in thought. Wondering what he was scheming this time.
"This is a great opportunity for us Jaken" he explained smugly, now InuYuki would see sense, now she would no longer be blinded by her weakness for humans. She would accept her destiny among the wolf pack and abandon her past life. She would never disobey him again.
"Another political alliance to further your influence milord, more descendants to your great family and finally that brat will remove herself from the influence of humans" Jaken explained. It was a disgrace to their name that she lived among the mortals.
Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes, though Jaken wasn't wrong "InuYuki is abandoning that village, though the priest protecting it is strong he is no match for a DaiYokai" he explained. Nobody would be able to fight against a DaiYokai, there was no priest, monk or priestess alive with that kind of power, not since Midoriko. His strength, his godlike abilities would overpower that human instantly, he wouldn't stand a chance. This would be the perfect plan to strike, to finally remove that human from his sisters life, no longer acting as a distraction."Your staff projects fire, a human village is no match for such flames, especially one as poor as theirs. Without the Tetsuigha's wind scar to prevent such a thing, the village is damned" Sesshoumaru explained. They could burn it without a trace, nobody would remember the village but the humans, those that survived would be forced to move elsewhere to find a home.
Jaken blinked "You mean to burn down that village and drive away that pesky human priest?" Jaken asked
Sesshoumaru nodded, the fire wouldn't be tamed, it would take a rainstorm or worse to decrease the affects of a fire. InuYuki would be too far away to stop the fire and once she found out it would be too late "Once that human is out of the way she will have no choice but to accept the marriage" he chuckled.
"You are truly cunning milord, she cannot go against your wishes" Jaken praised
Kouga sighed, stretching wearily, first he'd had to have a political meeting with Kichirou about the safety of InuYuki and keeping up a guise to ward off her brother, now he was sending protection to the village to ensure no harm came to her. Putting his all in to ensure her wellbeing was always first at hand, from meeting his future mother in law, to making a deal with his rival in love, things had gotten more complicated recently. He needed a soak in the hot springs located on their mountain, he needed a hot meal and a long sleep. Though his stamina was far exceeding that of a humans, he could admit his exhaustion.
"You appear stressed young pup, but as my stepdaughters husband to be, I expect the pressure is getting to you" a female voice teased. He had protected her nobly, he had courted her respectfully and it was clear she was developing feelings for him. InuYuki was very inexperienced when it came to love, so she was easily flustered and overwhelmed. She knew how stressful engagements and marriage could be, they had handled this all well and she admired them for it.
Kouga jolted, turning to see Lady InuKimi standing behind him with a smile, how had he not sensed her? Let alone picked up her scent. He wondered if perhaps his senses were dulled from his exhaustion? "H... How?" he stammered, thinking of how easily she could have harmed him. This was their first meeting in person, despite escorting InuYuki on her visit to see her.
"I sensed my son would be stirring trouble and I know my stepdaughter was distressed after our last meeting. I didn't wish to scold my son and wanted to come here alone" she smiled. She had seen he was deep in thought so he wouldn't have noticed her, he seemed under a lot of pressure for such a young leader. She didn't wish for Sesshoumaru to cause him more grief so she had come to offer her assistance.
Kouga swallowed, he felt embarrassed that he had not been more prepared for her visit. It was bad manners to show someone of her title "I... may I offer you some tea Milady? I'm afraid I'm indisposed due to this being such short notice" he apologised. He was embarrassed that he was showing such bad manners to his in laws because he was distracted, it would not bode well for his reputation.
InuKimi smiled politely, sensing his anxiety, she knew all the pressure he was under "Nonsense, it was about time I give a wedding present so I brought some with me" she soothed. They had needed some alone time to speak for a long time but now she had finally managed to get him alone. She knew that Kouga cared deeply for her stepdaughter and she was pleased to meet him in person. She had noticed his scent when InuYuki visited but remained unseen to give them privacy. She revealed some high quality tea leaves and strawberry daifuku "I thought we could have a small tea party, just the two of us" she smiled. Kouga nodded, swallowing nervously, knowing better than to say no.
InuKimi sipped her tea gracefully, kneeling on wolf pelts before Kouga who sat awkwardly opposite her. She sensed his anxiety, knowing she was a far more powerful demon than himself. He was young, naive and rebellious, but she showed promise as a leader and had a bright future ahead of him. "I assume InuYuki is still distressed over our last meeting, she's always been a sensitive one that girl" InuKimi reflected. Losing her mother so young, she had locked herself in her room for weeks, refusing to eat and crying herself to sleep, waking up with nightmares. Many servants tried to settle her but failed, Sesshoumaru attempted to scold her. Despite her dislike of Izayoi, she harboured no hostility towards InuYuki, she was an orphan who had lost her mother. She soothed the pup as best she could, explaining that they were family, but her mother had now passed on. Her pain was empathised as was her loss, but it would not bring her mother back. Often helping the young pup to sleep and offering to give her potions to help her rest.
"She knows you mean well, that your words don't come from a cruel place. She's just upset at having to give up the happiness she's found to appease her family" Kouga explained. InuYuki never spoke badly of her stepmother, but she never acted friendly towards her either, they were just strangers. They respected one another to an extent. InuKimi at least seemed more empathetic of her stepdaughters heartache.
InuKimi smiled, it appeared they were growing closer and forming a connection which pleased her. She was learning more of the politics of the demon world and learning to mature, which she was relieved by. "You've visited her again, I can smell her and that human on you" she smirked, Kouga blushed, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "I was worried at the prospect of an arranged marriage so young, but you seem to care greatly for her, I'm relieved" she hummed. She had hoped to leave it a while before discussing the prospects of suitors with InuYuki, feeling like it would be too much pressure on her. Kouga seemed like a perfect match for her, he would support and protect her well.
Kouga softened, a light blush dusting his cheeks "She's... she's unique, I've never met a girl like her" he confessed. He'd heard stories of half breeds and the Inu DaiYokai clan, but seeing them in person was a different experience entirely. Their entire bloodline were ethereal. He truly felt like he had to earn InuYuki's love and loyalty which made it more satisfying when she returned it.
InuKimi chuckled, he'd fallen for her and it was written all over his face, the same way her husband had acted when they first met "Young love, it's truly heartwarming" she reflected. She could only imagine how entertaining their courtship had been. "Tell me, I hear some of your kin are able to transform fully into wolves, however, it's only by the truly potent of your clan. Able to revert from a humanoid demon into a pure wolf" she asked. Able to channel their demonic power into a demon-like form much like theirs. Though their beast forms were nothing in comparison to the size of her demonic form, or that of her son and late husband, wolf demons were truly formidable in their own right.
Kouga shifted, though not many wolves were able to, he had inherited such powers, it allowed him to protect his clan and manifest his demonic nature. Yes, he was one of the few wolves of their clan who could transform and revert back from a humanoid demon into a wolf. Though himself, the Western chiefs Granddaughter Ayame and few others could achieve this. He had the form of a black wolf with brown flecks, in his fur and his same piercing blue eyes, though he hadn't shown this form to InuYuki yet. The only people who knew about this ability were Ginta and Hakkaku, though they never told a soul. "Indeed Milady, alongside the Goraishi, they are my two most powerful forms as prince" he admitted.
InuKimi smirked, she wondered if he would ever use this power to protect InuYuki and how she would feel when she witnessed it for herself "My stepdaughter is truly a lucky girl, I take it you've seen her human form" she asked. She remembered the first time InuYuki became a human when she was still residing at her castle. The scent had changed and everyone could sense her demonic blood weakened. She hid from everyone, including her half brother, InuKimi had been the only one who visit though she didn't make her come out. Ensuring she ate and kept up her strength. Respecting her stepdaughters privacy.
Kouga swallowed, remembering the moment he laid eyes on her, her pale skin, her piercing brown eyes and silky black hair "Yes Milady". In that moment he knew he loved her, in both forms, as a human and a demon he was smitten with her. The very blood she was shamed for had been the most enticing of all.
InuKimi sighed, her gaze becoming hardened and reflective "In her Yokai form she greatly resembles my late husband, the hallmark of our clan. The same silver hair and piercing amber eyes, a truly stunning young girl" she reminisced. The way she wore his robe of the fire rat, the way she carried herself and the way she wore her heart on her sleeve, so much like Touga, she was truly her fathers daughter.
"She's a beautiful young lady" he agreed, he couldn't help but wonder how Touga would have reacted had he been able to see his youngest grow up. How involved in her life he would have been.
InuKimi's expression became pained, she never spoke of her husband and when she did it was fleeting. Despite how many millennia had passed since his death, her heart still ached for him. She still mourned him and longed for his presence. "However, her mother too was a beauty, it's what allured my late husband after our amicable divorce. She was a beauty of a human, from rags to riches. Their coupling birthed her" InuKimi explained. Izayoi had been born a poverty ridden farmers daughter with not a penny to her name, yet somehow slowly found a life of wealth. She caught her husbands eye and soon he became smitten by her. "The same silky black hair, pale skin and intense brown eyes" she hummed. Her gaze turned to Kouga suspiciously "You say you saw her human face?" she asked, as her husband it would be inevitable he would see it. Though whether he wished to keep her company or give her privacy during the nights of the dark moon was his choice. She would choose to isolate herself regardless.
"Yes Milady, I once visited her during her human night" he confessed, he had been worried, sensing her demon aura was weakening and feared something happened to her. It just so happened that it was her human night and he ended up watching guard over her.
"And I take it you were as smitten with her human form as her demon" InuKimi chuckled, he had been charmed by her, wooed by her scent and her innocent appearance. He was not deterred by the human blood in her, which proved his affections for her were genuine. Kouga blushed silently; yes he was in love with InuYuki, human or demon he was smitten with her. Though he had to admit he was slightly more enticed by her human side.
InuKimi sighed, this wolf truly cared for InuYuki, more than anyone had in a long time which was a relief, she would be in good hands. Regardless of whether or not he was a fellow demon, she had more sense and empathy than her son did. She would not allow her stepdaughter to marry a demon that would mistreat her. "Listen well wolf prince, you may need to train that demon form of yours. My son is a schemer, he's a cunning one, but then he got that from both his parents. InuYuki will need your protection all her life. Many want her dead and the enemies of my husband come for his children" InuKimi warned. Sesshoumaru would never rest until he broke InuYuki's spirit, he had never recovered from the loss of their father and projected the blame to his half sister. He had much growing up to do and she hoped he would soon find clarity.
Kouga hardened, nodding bravely, he would never allow Sesshoumaru to lay a hand on his wife to be. Though he may have seen fit to do so when she wasn't engaged or when they were children, he wouldn't allow such behaviour once InuYuki was made pack member. "I'd give my life for her Milady, I won't let anyone not even your son lay a hand on her. Once she is wed to me, she has the protection of the entire clan. We protect our own" he assured her. If someone hurt a member of the clan, it was a scorn against the entire clan, an insult to them all.
InuKimi smiled, she could see Kouga going against her son and teaching him a lesson, something she would be amused to witness in person "I see I was naive to worry, she has a well chosen prospective husband". Kouga had a fire to him that she admired, a passionate heart and a good head on his shoulders. InuKimi sipped her tea again, enjoying the taste "Your tea will go cold, drink up" she encouraged. Kouga shifted, politely picking up his tea, he'd seen so distracted by their conversation he forgot all about it. The flavour was delicate but well balanced and smelled good, no bitterness in tea leaves, the royal blooded really did eat well. As he sipped it, he felt his nerves calm and his body relax, it seemed to be exactly what he needed. "Let me know if my son ever causes you bother again, while I too am eager to see this marriage blossom. His interference won't make my stepdaughter lessen her hostility towards either of us" she encouraged. She would need to warn him not to interfere in his sisters love life, it would only drive the wedge deeper. Kouga coughed, nearly choking on his tea but making sure not to spill any, was he actually forming a secret alliance against Sesshoumaru with his mother? How could things get more complicated?
