Chapter Two: Classes
What place started classes on a Friday? Celeste shrugged it off as she changed into her uniforms and grabbed her new backpack and stuffed her books inside it along with her gym clothes and sneakers.
"Ready to start the first day?" Korra asked as Celeste nodded her head. It felt odd wearing uniforms to match others but yet they didn't really match. Humming softly as she followed Korra out.
"I'm hungry!" The voice of Bolin came from behind them.
"You shouldn't have slept in then! Come on. We're gonna be late." Opal spoke as she dragged Bolin with her. Celeste smiled and waved at them as they made their way down the pathway into another building. Hearing a whistle. She looked over and saw an older man shouting at what seemed like military students. They were in perfect formation in movements.
"Come Celeste!" Korra grabbed Celeste this time and pulled her away. Celeste was smiling while following her new friends. They had entered a small classroom. Her eyes caught fern green ones. She gulped as Kuvira glared at her with crossed arms.
"Welcome! Please take your seats." Professor Tenzin's voice came from the doorway. Celeste took a seat behind Kuvira, next to Korra as they took out their books. Celeste pulled out her notebook and smiled.
"Today we shall be learning about past avatars." Tenzin spoke as he slid a blackboard to the side and had a list of avatars with their names next to them. She had Kyoshi. Her favorite! She sat up straighter with a smile.
"Now, I want a report on a book that you shall receive once you visit the library. By Monday." Tenzin spoke as he opened the book. "Now. That everyone knows which avatar they are paired with, let's turn to our first chapter. The One Hundred Year war and its effect." Their professor spoke as he began to read from the book and occasionally put in his own words. When he did this, Celeste wasted no time in writing down what he said. The Hundred Year war was so well known in many schools across the nation but it wasn't taught by Aang's own son.
"Alright. That is all the time we have. Don't forget to pick up your books!" Tenzin shouted as they left the classroom.
"What do you know about Kyoshi?" Korra asked as Celeste was humming and dancing a little as they made their way to their next class.
"She is the first and only avatar to live up to two hundred and thirty years old!" Celeste beamed. She was excited to write her report. She was dancing a little again. She stopped when the art professor was smiling at her. She blushed and pushed past Korra.
"Hey! Wait up!" Korra shouted while running after her. Celeste laughed and linked her arms with her friend as they entered the next classroom.
"Your assigned seats!" The woman snapped as she leaned against her desk. Celeste let go of Korra with a gulp. She looked closer at the woman. 'Oh.' She thought. It was the chief of police. Looking on the blackboard was a picture of the classroom with names on the tables. Celeste was up front next to it. You guessed it! Kuvira. The raven black haired woman was already at her seat with her arms crossed. Celeste took her seat. She felt tense. Feeling the glaring eyes on her as she ignored it. Korra and Opal were sitting behind her. Bolin and another boy on the other side. Professor Beifong had erased the board and began writing.
"These will be your seats in this classroom. The person next to you is your partner in projects." The chief spoke. She heard a frustrated sigh next to her from Kuvira. She couldn't blame her. Kuvira did not like her; not one bit. She was now determined to befriend this woman. Celeste couldn't help but check out her professor. The older woman was wearing a button up red blouse. Long black slacks that fit her legs. Flaring at the bottom. She wore black heels. Celeste shook her head and focused on writing down everything that Lin was writing.
"This semester we will be going over different plays that made poets famous. Who can tell me one famous writer?" Kuvira's hand shot up. She was the only one. Lin nodded at her.
"Puan Tin." Kuvira spoke. Hearing a snicker from behind her.
"That is correct. It was a horribly written play about avatar Aang and his team." Professor Lin spoke as Celeste raised a brow. She had never heard that one before. She wrote down the name. She decided she would research it. Their professor listed several more writers but yet this one kept coming back to her mind. Putting her head on her hand as she watched the older woman move about to write on the other side of the blackboard.
"Now. I want reports on one play of your choice. Before you leave, I want each of you to write your name next to a play you are going to research on." Professor spoke as the bell rang. Celeste jumped up and quickly wrote her name next to Puan Tin's. Setting the chalk down before quickly grabbing her things and dashed out of the room.
"Hey come on now! Stop rushing!" Korra's voice shouted as she finally caught up.
"Sorry. It felt tense in that classroom." Celeste huffed as she was red faced. She had never checked anyone out before. Let alone a woman. Pushing the thoughts back as she began to do a little dance again as they headed towards their next class. Her hair was starting to feel like it was tangled. Feeling a shove as Kuvira pushed past her. She stopped dancing and frowned before she followed Korra in silence. Did they all share the same class? Curious. They entered a different kind of classroom. It was more of a welcoming feeling.
"Welcome dears! Please take your seats anywhere!" Su's voice came as Celeste smiled before taking a seat up front near a window but away from Kuvira. Korra sat in the back. It seemed like everyone had their own table desk. Pulling out her art history book and her sketch pad. The different types of pencils for drawing as well.
"Now, I want to say how happy I am to have more students this hour." Professor Su spoke as she sat on top of her desk. "Who can tell me why art is important?" She asked as Celeste and Kuvira both raised their hands. The professor nodded at Celeste.
"Art is the earliest communication form between humans." Celeste spoke.
"Correct! Good job dear!" Su spoke. Celeste couldn't help but blush and smile at the compliment. She received a glare again from Kuvira. "What is it to her?' Celeste thought. They were given a project to work on in an art form. This was one of the times for her to shine. She is definitely an artistic person. She began to draw. Starting with light fast paced lines to get the shape she wanted.
"Professor. What is the reason for art history?" Korra asked.
"You see, dear. Art comes in many forms. From music. Writing, drawing, singing and dancing." Su looked at Celeste when she said dancing. She raised a brow wondering if their professor was trying to send a message. Ignoring it for now. "Art brings out the emotions of people." Su added as Korra nodded. Writing down what she said. Su was right about that. When Celeste would sing, she would put her heart into it as she did for dancing. She went back to her drawing. She was drawing a figure dancing in a forest as it rained.
"Interesting perspective." Su spoke over Celeste's shoulder. She turned a little pink and nodded her head.
"Thank you professor." She spoke softly.
Alright dears. That's all I have for today. I want you all to keep a personal sketchbook and draw in it. I want about fifty or more drawings by the end of the semester!" Professor Su spoke as everyone got up to leave.
"Ah, Celeste, a word please?" Su asked as Celeste nodded.
"Good luck." Korra whispered. Celeste gave Korra a confused look before shrugging. Once everyone had left, she went up to Su.
"So, I have to say. I couldn't help but notice you dancing in the hallway. If you're interested." She spoke while giving Celeste a flier. "Audition for the team." Her professor smiled at her.
"Oh. I um. I'll think about it, professor. Thank you." Celeste smiled and gave Su a bow before leaving. Seeing Korra waiting for her outside the doorway.
"What did she want?" Korra was nosey. She smiled at her friend.
"She wants me to audition for the dance team." Celeste spoke as Korra gasped. She had the information memorized on the paper.
"That's awesome!" Korra gasped and then frowned.
"Which you will stay away from!" Kuvira's voice snapped and took the flier out of Korra's hand and crumbled it up. Walking away with it.
They were outside at a table with their trays of food. Celeste was picking at her food and sighed.
"What's up Celeste?" Opal's voice asked as Celeste shrugged her shoulders.
"It's Kuvira. Professor Su invited her to audition for the dance team and Kuvira told her to stay away." Korra explained as they all frowned.
"If my mom thinks you should do it, then you should. She knows who is a good dancer and what not." Opal spoke. "She is the dance instructor after all." She added as Celeste looked up.
"Professor Su is also the dance instructor?" Celeste asked as Opal smiled and nodded. "She's strict when it comes to choosing people for her team. Kuvira is on it so that explains why she said that." Opal added as she finished eating. Celeste felt a little better and began to eat her food now. She had chosen a simple cheese burger and fries. Korra was eating noodles and dumplings. People were questioning Celeste on her food choices. She didn't care. She wanted to break away from her family's traditions and what not.
"Oh! This is Mako and Asami!" Bolin finally spoke up and introduced the two new faces she saw. Mako looked older than Bolin. He looked more serious as well. Asami however had something to her and she couldn't point it out. Celeste shook hands with both of them.
"Wait, Asami Sato?" Korra asked. Celeste's eyes went wide. "As in Sato-mobiles?" Korra added.
"Guilty as charged. My father invented them. I just work on them to make them better." Asami spoke as Celeste nodded. She was impressed! This woman was an heir to a huge company! She was sharing a table with them.
"I'm Celeste." She introduced herself.
"Yes, you're Alstair! My father had business contracts with your father a few times. It's nice to finally meet you." Asami spoke as Celeste blushed. She had never met anyone who knew her except the Beifongs. They shook hands again and began talking about the newest invention. Computers.
"Oh, we should get going." Opal spoke up. They all looked at their phones to see the time.
"So, I assume we change in the locker rooms?" Celeste asked as Korra shrugged. They entered a gym to see Bolin and Kuvira already there. Both Professor Beifongs were there as well.
"Alright! Might as well go over the rules! Do not be late for class. Locker rooms are for changing and showers only! No messing around! Everyone will receive their own lock for their locker. You will either change before coming into the gym or change in the locker room!" Lin barked as they made their way to the locker room. Their professor held out a clipboard and took names down with locker numbers and which lock they had.
"Here you go dear." Su handed Celeste a dark green lock. She smiled and went over to her assigned locker.
"Bolin, follow me." Lin spoke as she led him to another locker room.
"Alright ladies. Get changed." Su spoke before leaving. Celeste pulled out her gym clothes and opened her locker. She looked around and blushed before dashing into a stall.
"What's the matter Alstair? Got an ugly body?" Kuvira's voice shouted loud enough for everyone to hear. No. She never changed in front of someone before. She felt embarrassed.
"Shove it Kuvira! She's probably just uncomfortable." Korra spoke. Celeste sighed a relief. At least someone was on her side. She finally changed into her dark green shirt and black shorts. Walking back to her locker and putting her bag and clothes inside. Changing into her black sneakers. Kuvira already left as Korra was waiting.
"Sorry." Celeste mumbled as they made their way back out to the gym. Bolin waved at them. They smiled and waved back.
"Alright. Now I am going to show you some stretches that are good for your bending." Professor Su spoke as they all sat down in a circle. Celeste was sitting between Lin and Korra. Kuvira was across her next to Su. Celeste felt her face flushing. She was now glaring at Kuvira who was smirking at her.
"Alright. Bend your knee up front and stretch your other leg behind." Su explained as she showed them. Celeste could feel the burn in her leg. Korra was humming at this as Bolin was huffing for breaths. Celeste raised a brow at Bolin who gave her a thumbs up. Celeste shook her head and chuckled.
"Alright. Everyone up! Following my movements." Professor Lin shouted as they all stood up. Copying movements that Lin was doing. Celeste was again, staring at Lin's body before hearing a throat cleared. She looked away quickly.
"Alright. Hit the showers or get out." Lin ordered. Celeste gave the professors a bow before following Korra to the locker room. She saw Kuvira grab her own stuff and left.
"I'm gonna shower." Korra spoke. Celeste nodded. She only brought soap. She hummed softly while picking a shower on the other side of Korra and ran the hot water. Tossing her gym clothes in her locker before hopping in the hot water. She started laughing as the water felt good.
"You good?" Korra asked with a chuckle.
"Yeah sorry." Celeste smiled as she finished.
They had time before their final class. Korra had a different class than she did. Maybe it was an elective? Shrugging at the thought before she decided to head to the library. Once inside, she gasped. It was huge!
"Can I help you?" A voice spoke. Celeste turned and smiled.
"Professor Tenzin gave an assignment for an avatar." Celeste spoke. She also mentioned about the play she picked to research on. The Librarian led her to a shelf in the back. Pulling a few books off the shelf and handing them to her. Celeste bowed her thanks before sitting at a table. She had three books. Two on Kyoshi and a smaller one on the play she learned about. Fumbling through the pages as she hummed softly.
"How are you everywhere?" A voice whispered. She looked up and saw Kuvira.
"I'm just starting my homework." Celeste spoke as Kuvira rolled her eyes.
"Whatever. Give me your number." She spoke as Celeste shook her head.
"It's for our assignment. We need to work together." Kuvira spoke as Celeste wrote down her number and gave it to her. Watching the raven haired woman leave. Hearing a buzz from her phone. She saved the number and sighed. 'Great.' Celeste sighed. Was it a mistake giving Kuvira her number? She had hoped not. Looking at the time, she frowned. Grabbing her books to check them out before dashing out of the library. Stuffing the books in her bag before humming softly again.
"Dancing with myself." She began to hum the song as she did her little dance again. She felt eyes on her as she stopped. Looking over her shoulder, she saw both Beifong professors talking. Su was smiling at her as Lin had her back towards her. She blushed and dashed out of the hall. Her next class was on the other side of the campus. She had finally made it while entering the door.
There were only two other people there. Mako and Kuvira. She sighed as she sat down on the other side of Mako. The room was very large and round. It wasn't like the other classrooms. Hearing a door open and close.
"Hello. Sorry I am late. I'm Professor Song. You may know me as officer Song. I teach Astronomy here. This is considered one of the hardest elective classes. As you can see, only three of you picked this class." He spoke while moving some sort of lever as the lights went out and a light appeared.
"This classroom is an observatory." He spoke as Celeste gasped as what seemed like the galaxy was now in front of them. They all got up from their seats and walked around the classroom.
"Who can tell me how many planets?" Professor Song asked.
"Nine." Kuvira spoke as Celeste smiled.
"Who can name all nine?" Their professor asked.
"Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto." Celeste spoke with ease.
"That is correct Celeste. Seeing that your name is a cosmic. You named them in order as well. As I expected from you. Good job!" Song spoke as Celeste was still in awe at what was in front of them.
"Now. What is the name of our galaxy?"
"Milky Way." Mako spoke this time.
"Correct as well." Song spoke while walking around the room. Their eyes followed him. "There are eighty-eight constellations in our galaxy. I want each of you to pick five different ones and write a report on them. We are going to be starting with the moon phases." He spoke as the light came back on. Celeste sat in her seat and pulled out her notebook and began writing her notes. She was so engrossed in the class, that this one just might be her favorite.
"Since I only have three of you this semester, we'll do a class project." Song spoke as Mako groaned. Celeste nudged him with her elbow.
"Nothing too big. Pick three planets. Preferably the one you were born under and work together on how they are alike and different. How it affects your daily lives." Song spoke as Kuvira raised her hand. Song nodded at her.
"Don't you think it's a little far-fetched?" She asked as Celeste raised a brow.
"Do YOU think it is? Write about it in the report." Song smiled as he dismissed.
"What a load of bogus." Kuvira sighed while she followed them from behind.
"I don't know. I think it's kind of cool. I'm not sure about being born under a planet and it affects us. So, I agree with you." Celeste spoke as Kuvira rolled her eyes and left.
"She really doesn't like you, does she?" Mako asked as Celeste shook her head.
"Hey, see you around." Celeste bowed to Mako as he waved at her. Celeste was humming yet again but decided not to dance.
She was reading the bulletin board as she felt herself hit the wall gently.
"Oh. I am so sorry there." A young man spoke as he picked up his books. He fixed his glasses and smiled.
"It's alright. Just make sure you pay attention next time." Celeste smiled at him. Holding her Kyoshi book closely.
"Let me make it up to you. Take you out for coffee?" He asked.
"Um.." She raised a brow.
"I'm sorry. Where are my manners? My name is Haur." He held out his hand.
"Celeste." She gently shook it. "Uh, sure. Here is my number." She wrote it down. He smiled and bowed at her before taking his leave. Celeste stood there dumbfounded. A guy had asked her out on a date. She decided to leave and find Korra. Remembering there was a group chat. She opened her phone to text.
Cel: A guy asked me out for coffee.
Kor: What?!
Asami: What did you say?
Cel: I said yes. I feel dumb.
Asami: Why?
Cel: I don't know. Weird I guess.
Kuv: Good luck Alstair.
Kor: Who added you?
Opal: I did! She's my sis!
Mako: Well, tell us how it goes.
Cel: For sure. It's not until tomorrow.
She closed her phone as she made her way back to her dorm room. Korra wasn't there yet. She set her book down on her desk on her side of the room and sighed. She started working on her reports on Kyoshi. It was quick and easy to do since Kyoshi was her idol earth bender as was Toph. She pulled out her other report. Hearing the door open and closed as she looked up. Seeing a very flushed Korra.
"Oh?" Celeste chuckled while Korra sat on her bed.
"Mako and I kissed." Korra started. Celeste gasped and sat on the edge of her bed.
"Details!" She was smiling.
"I don't know. I like him. He is cute. It feels off though." Korra spoke as Celeste raised a brow at her friend. "I don't wanna lead him on but then again, I do like him." Korra spoke.
"Hmm. Maybe go out a few times and go from there?" Celeste suggested as Korra nodded her head.
"I'm gonna start my homework." Korra sighed as Celeste was now doing the same. She had finished her paper on the play she learned. Now, it was time for her favorite class. Art. She opened her sketchbook. She began to draw Korra's face on the top left. Opal in the center and Bolin on the right. Names were put down by the shape of the faces as she began the details on Korra's face. She occasionally looked up at Korra and then back to her book. Korra was completely oblivious to this which made her job a lot easier to draw. She smiled and closed her book. She would need to get a better look of her other friends before setting the book aside. She yawned and stretched. Changing into her night wear before crawling into bed.
"Sleep sounds good." Korra spoke as she also changed and crawled into her bed. Turning off the light. Celeste looked outside the window. There she could see the moon and stars. She was able to make out a few constellations before dozing off.
–Notes–
There will be a lot and I mean a LOT of similarities with this fanfiction and Avatar University. Though, major differences as well! Hope you enjoy it!
