Chapter 1 New moon
Kiara and Kovu were having fun swimming in the lake. They swum fast through the water thanks to their new fish tails. It had been two months since the mermaids went back to Australia, although they missed them and they're human friends, they were still enjoying their lives as mermaids.
When Clio, Rikki and Bella had stopped comet Ava a fragment had landed in Kovu's former home the outlands and created a new moonpool. The mermaids and humans came to Africa to look for the fragment and met Kiara, her brother Kion and their friends and went with them. Kiara and Kovu had fallen into the moonpool on a full moon and became mermaids.
After racing around the lake to the shore, Kiara and Kovu climbed out of the water and dragged a distance. The warmth of the sun dried them up, and Kiara's marigold fish tail and Kovu's emerald green fish tail turned back in their back legs and lion tails.
"It's so much fun being able to breath underwater and swim so fast," sighed Kiara getting up.
"Yeah," agreed Kovu. "It's like we've been doing this forever."
They looked up and saw Kiara's father Simba, the king of the pridelands approaching. When Kiara and Kovu became mermaids, Kiara and the lion guard let him stay in the pridelands. Simba didn't trust Kovu at first due to being an outsider, but overtime he became more trusting.
"Gone swimming again you two?" asked Simba.
"Yes dad," said Kiara. "It's so much fun to swim when you can turn into a mermaid."
Not only could Kiara and Kovu could turn into mermaids when they touched water, they had powers like Rikki, Emma, Clio and Bella. Kiara had substance powers like Bella and Kovu could do weather.
The mermaids and their human boyfriends Zane, Lewis and Will had helped Kion and the lion guard defeat Scar, Kovu's mother Zira and their followers. Ever since the mermaids left, the pridelands had been peaceful.
Simba, Kiara and Kovu headed back to pride rock where Kiara's mother Nala, Kion, the rest of the lion guard and Kiara's best friends Tiifu and Zuri were waiting.
"Hey Kiara," said Kion. "Where you guys out swimming again?"
"Yeah," replied Kiara. "It was fun. Why haven't you been Fuli?"
Like Kiara and Kovu, Fuli had also fallen in the moonpool and became a mermaid too. Her powers were fire like Rikki. Fuli wasn't too fond of water, but ever since she turned into mermaid form, she'd like water more. But she hadn't been swimming much since the mermaids/humans left.
"I've been busy helping the guard protect the pridelands" Fuli reminded.
Although Scar, Zira and Ushari were gone, they still had problems with Janja's clan, Reirei's pack and Kiburi's float. Kovu's sister Vitani and some of the other outsiders had joined the pridelanders, the others remained in the outlands.
"Do you think Clio, Rikki, Bella, Emma and the boys will come back soon?" asked Tiifu.
"I don't think so Tiifu" replied Kiara.
"That's too bad," said Bunga. "I think the humans and mermaids are cool."
"I agree Bunga," agreed Beshte. "I miss them too."
"They were very great visitors" declared Nala.
"And they're welcome in the pridelands anytime" added Simba.
JAW
That night, the moon was full, so Kiara and Kovu stayed in the den. They remembered what the mermaids had told them about when the moon was full, it could cause affects on their powers and personality. Kiara remembered when she first moon spelled and acted rude and aggressive. And Zira had gotten Kovu moon spelled to make him evil.
Fuli also had her experience with being moon spelled, ever since the mermaids/humans left, she made sure to take shelter in treed areas or stayed at pride rock away from the moon.
Kiara, Kovu, Tiifu, Zuri, Vitani and Fuli were all hanging out in the den. Kion and the others were out on evening patrol, and Simba and Nala were out.
It wasn't really the same without the mermaids/humans around. They had always been quite interested about the mermaids talking about the ocean, where they came from and about the things humans do.
"It isn't much fun without Clio and her friends" sighed Zuri.
The others agreed.
Later that night, the pride went to sleep. Although Kiara was curled up at her mother's side, she was having trouble sleeping, she tossed and turned. The full moon was getting to her.
Her eyes shot open. moonlight shone inside the den.
Kiara got up and walked towards the entrance. Kovu was sleeping next to Kion and Simba, he woke up to see Kiara walking outside.
"Kiara?" he called.
But Kiara didn't hear him.
Kovu got up and ran out after her.
He followed her out of the den. Kiara was standing at the edge of pride rock, starring up at the moon. As he looked at Kiara, he could see a blank expression on her face. He realized she had been moonspelled.
Kovu looked up at the full moon and went into a trance like state too. Then the two cubs walked out side by side.
Meanwhile Kion woke up and saw Kiara and Kovu were gone.
"Dad," said Kion nudging his father. "Dad!"
Simba tiredly opened his eyes and got up.
"What's wrong?" he asked tiredly.
"Kiara and Kovu are gone!" cried Kion.
Simba's head immediately got up and he looked around the den and saw Kion was right.
"They must have been moonspelled" Simba realized.
"What's the matter?" asked Nala waking up.
"Kiara and Kovu have been moonspelled!" cried Simba worriedly.
The queen's blue eyes looked around and saw they were gone. Tiifu, Zuri, Fuli and the rest of the guard got up.
"Come on," said Kion. "We'd better go find them before their powers go out of control."
The lion guard, Simba, Nala, Tiifu and Zuri went outside.
"How is it that Kiara and Kovu are moonspelled and Fuli is fine?" asked Bunga.
"Remember what Emma said the first time she got moonspelled?" replied Ono. "Cleo and Rikki looked at the full moon on the same night and they were fine."
"Yeah," agreed Fuli. "It's like the moon chooses who to moonspell."
"Guys!" cried Kion suddenly. "I got their scent. They're going towards the outlands."
"They must be heading for the moonpool!" exclaimed Beshte.
The group quickly ran off to the outlands.
JAW
Kiara and Kovu walked across the outlands side by side still under the effect of the moon.
They walked into the cave where the moonpool was. The cave was lit up by the light of the moon, blue crystals were formed on the wall. The pool shone in the moonlight. The moon was almost above the pool.
Kiara and Kovu were walking closer and closer to the pool. Suddenly the walked in with a big splash just as the moon was directly over the pool.
The water bubbled and there was a flash of light. Kiara and Kovu were underneath in mercub form unconscious.
In the morning the two cubs woke up and found they were underwater.
"Kiara! Kovu!" called a voice.
"Dad?" said Kiara.
Kiara and Kovu swum to the surface to find Simba, Nala, the lion guard, Tiifu and Zuri all gathered around the moonpool.
"Are you two, okay?" asked Nala worriedly.
"Yes Nala," said Kovu.
"Did we get moonspelled again?" asked Kiara.
"I'm afraid so" said Kion.
"Well at least it's all over" Kiara sighed with a smile as she and Kovu climbed out.
Fuli used her heat powers to dry them off. But when they were dried off, they were surprised to noticed they still had their fish tails!
"Our tails," exclaimed Kovu. "They're still here!"
