As ghost related events continued popping up throughout the country, another group of teenagers began drawing in more attention, they were the AmityPark_Phanclub. Jazz had been shown in their first videos and as she was also gaining more attention these last few days from her appearance on the website, it led many back to the locally organized YouTube channel. Their videos generally featured high schoolers from Amity, however the group itself seemed to have split up to accomplish different tasks.
Their most trending video at the moment was titled Local Ladies Finding Ratings. Featuring the previously introduced Star and Paulina who are going around Amity Park so they can gage the citizens' reactions to the news of who Phantom is and the government's actions.
It began focused on Paulina standing near Amity Park's town hall with Star by her side. "Welcome everyone to today's video. Due to everyone's curiosity, we've decided to show some of the varying opinions in Amity Park today."
"Our group is obviously in support of Phantom, but we're going to do our best to be open in the direction of our questions, and be open to the different responses that may come from it." After saying this Star gave a pointed look to Paulina.
Paulina grumbled "Unless they're completely idiotic."
Star patted her on the shoulder. "If they're talking complete nonsense we may try to explore the issues in their opinion."
Star began asking the first question. "What are your opinions on the government, and it's interactions with the town?"
"Well the government hasn't done much for us lately has it? No matter how many Guys in White agents they send to harass Phantom, it doesn't help us at all. The fact that Phantom is a minor definitely hasn't reflected well on them either." The interviewee shrugged. "Sure, before we thought he was a ghost, and ghosts can cause chaos at any age, but that's still a kid they're attacking."
The next person they asked was what appeared to be a college aged student. "I guess that contact has improved over time, but eh. The few times I've spoken to any agents they've been pretty rude. I'd say the government beyond the GIW probably had no clue what was going on down here before we drew in all this attention. Probably thought we were all off our rockers really."
"What are your opinions on the government, and it's interactions with the town?"
The elderly lady they were interviewing smiled. "Well dearies, Amity has always been a tad on the wild side with things like this. The government was simply doomed here from the beginning."
Paulina stepped in. "Could you elaborate for us?"
"Yes, of course." She paused for a moment in thought. "I suppose, it's quite hard to cage something that refuses to obey by the logic you thought controlled everything. No, no, not only the recent ghosts. No matter how those silly government agents may explain it, our town has always been supernatural. From when I was born here some seventy years ago, to generations before it. It is in our very foundations. Many have tried to stop it, and in the end the only thing they ever managed was to keep the incidents in local memory and legends, nothing more. Until now that is, all you youngsters managed to stir up the trouble again. Must have been a nightmare for the politicians I'll say."
Star blinked "Ah- yes, I think it was, definitely still is."
"It was certainly funny to watch the public stumble around a bit, after our own shock had worn off." Paulina leaned forward in interest. "On that subject then, what do you think of Danny? Danny Fenton and Phantom that is?"
"Yes, yes, the Fenton's boy. Well it was certainly unexpected for most wasn't it? He always was such a sweet boy though." She chuckled to herself "It's always the small ones that end up fighting. I don't know how everyone thought it would go any differently with him anyways. Raised in this town and raised in an old ghost hunter family like he was. His life would have always been intertwined with the strange, whether he was made to be a ghost or not. Ah- Hello Ida."
Another older woman riding a scooter rolled into their conversation. "Hello Cam, girls. What are we up to this afternoon?"
"These two were just asking some questions about the town, and the ghosts of course. If I'm not mistaken, they must be classmates of your granddaughter."
Star perked up, realization in her eyes. "Oh! You're Ida Manson? Sam's grandmother?"
"Why yes, I am. And may I say I quite enjoy your online videos." Ida said, smiling with a twinkle in her eyes.
"Thank you! This is perfect actually." Giving a nod to Paulina's gesture of go ahead, Star continued. "As you probably know, Sam's parents don't seem to agree with what she is choosing to do. Would it be okay if we asked you some questions as well?"
Ida nodded. "Of course, shoot away."
"First of all, as her grandmother, how do you feel about what Sam is doing currently? Along with the involvement of ghosts, well- like Danny."
"No matter what Jeremy and Pamela may think, I have and will always support my granddaughter. She has been learning much over these past few years, and I completely trust her to make these decisions for herself. Not only that, but those boys are good ones. When Danny was changed into a half ghost, they truly didn't know what to do, but they've stuck together. And I know those kids will always have each others backs."
Star titled her head in interest. "Did you know about Danny being a ghost?"
"They certainly never told me outright, but a grandmother never tells." She winked "Besides that, no matter what nonsense the government says they could never handle ghosts very well. Could they Cam?"
Cam chuckled "Yes, that incident in the 60's ruined any view of the government here for a good number of years."
Star and Paulina made eye contact with each other, silently asking one another if they knew what the cryptic grandmothers were talking about. They did not.
The next question was asked by Paulina. "What do you think of Phantom?"
The little kid in front of them jumped up and down, tugging at their older brother's shirt. "Phantom is the coolest! He protects the town and punches the bad ghosts and shoots cool lasers. One time he saved me from a huuuuge explosion." They said, mimicking a big boom with their hands. "He's my hero!"
"Ah that kid has a good heart, I can't imagine protecting the town like that at all, but he's been doing this in High School. I just couldn't, I had a hard enough time in High School as it is! I was quite shocked when Phantom turned out to be a Fenton of course, never thought there could be half ghosts, or whatever the government is saying he is."
"Not gonna lie he scares me a bit, I mean have you seen him like destroying all the other ghosts in fights? It's good for us but wow remind me never to get on his bad side." They paused, eyes wide as they processed what they had just said as Star and Paulina watched on with understanding expressions. "No- not that I think he would use his powers to hurt someone like that! Just, I, you know what I mean. He is a strong boy okay."
"Phantom? He's not human, that thing is a monster. I hope the government can get him and those teenagers soon. Really, he's been tricking the town with his acts of kindness this whole time and most people fell for it too! But ghosts are all evil, they aren't human, even the Fenton's said so before they were locked up."
Star blinked "…wow. Okay, so to clarify what do you think should happen if the government ever manage to capture them?"
"Lock him away of course! They need to put that thing in a lab and study it, make sure we know how to get rid of those things. Honestly, I'd feel best if they just kill it completely this time. So it can never come back and harass the living again."
"What if Phantom was innocent and really was half human?" Star gestured with her hand, obviously getting exasperated. "Do you think the government should stop their aggressive approaches if that were the case?"
The man in a suit shook his head. "No, absolutely not. I don't know what kind of strange experiments the Fenton's were doing in that lab of there's, but we shouldn't have to deal with the it. Half human? Even if that were true that's not human enough to be normal is it. That thing is a risk to our society, a filthy mark on our town. After this whole mess being caused by Phantom the government needs to take that thing down. Things should be dealt with harshly and accordingly."
"Accordingly? Accordingly?!" Paulina growled, stepping closer to him.
Star reached forward. "Paulina-"
"I can't take it anymore! That's our classmate! That is the Danny that I've known since first grade, who helps people as a ghost and as a human. He has saved everyone in this town countless times, he deserves respect, and he deserves to exist without people hunting him down. You," she pointed at the man they had been interviewing, "you should be ashamed of yourself!"
He stuttered in surprise. "Well I-"
"What if that was your own kid? Your own children or family being hunted down ruthlessly, how would you feel then?"
The man gaped, unprepared for such a question. "I- I am extremely busy, I must go now." With that, he practically jogged away, laptop bag swinging behind him.
Star and Paulina stared after him as his figure disappeared behind a building, the latter crossed her arms, unimpressed. "Now that was sad."
They continued with the same question even after the previous aggressive response.
"You know I think he's a good kid," The teenager paused in thought. "I think it's all being blown out of proportion by the government and some medias though."
Their friend stepped up beside them, staring directly into the camera. "He's a chaotic little gremlin, but I support it."
"This town has numbed down everyone's common sense, and I've accepted that at this point. We see the equivalent of ghostbusters movies pretty much every day, half ghost? Pshh, that's nothing. That kid has saved our asses so many times at this point his ghostly status barely matters anymore."
"It's kind of cool isn't it? He's our own little superhero with a secret identity and everything." The enthusiastic guy glanced away for a moment. "That makes us the extras who somehow never realized his identity, but you know that's okay. Really though how did no one notice, it's literally just a colour swap-"
Paulina nodded solemnly. "We were his classmates, trust me, we feel the same way."
Star shrugged. "In our defense, we didn't exactly expect Danny to be partially dead."
The young gas station cashier they were interviewing stared intently at the camera. "Listen I once saw this boy, as Phantom, stumble in here at 3am during one of my late-night shifts. He shuffled around and ran into the wall no less than three times, before buying a green monster with crumbled one-dollar bills and floating off through the ceiling. I knew from that day on, even dead, he's just trying to survive like the rest of us."
The next group that Paulina and Star approached was a collection of different ages and people that seemed to have one thing in common, their support for Phantom. Each member had some sort of Phantom merchandise on their person with a few scattered signs held up between them.
Paulina smiled and looked on proudly at the group while Star asked their question again. "So, this may be obvious, but what do you guys think of Phantom?"
"Oh my god he's awesome!"
"That dude is super cool."
"He's our hero!"
Another young adult stepped forward, they were wearing a black t-shirt with the Phantom emblem on it. "Obviously yeah, we support Phantom. He's been mistreated by officials since he started here in Amity Park and honestly, he's been mistreated by this town too."
A young man stepped up beside them. "We are all here to show our common support for Phantom, and really for ghosts rights in general. What the government is enabling is not justice, it is cruelty. We cannot in good conscience remain in the comfort of our own homes, standing idly by and watching all of this happen."
There were some supportive cheers from the riled up group and the man blushed, stepping closer to his friend's side.
Star smiled at the positive reactions. "That's awesome we totally agree with you, actually if you guys would be willing-"
"Alright folks," a booming voice interrupted the conversation "It's time for this to end, please quietly disperse and return to your homes." The group startled as the GIW agent announced his presence. The camera swung around to show the agent who had spoken, along with the intimidating group of agents standing at attention behind him.
"What?" Star's face was scrunched up in confusion.
The group of Phantom supporters made some uneasy chatter at this announcement. The young supporter wearing the Phantom shirt voiced their disagreement loudest. "Excuse me? Why would we do that?"
"You all seem to be supporting an extremely dangerous level eight ecto entity and a fugitive on top of that. You are all disturbing the peace and I have the authority to remove you."
"Authority? We- we are not disturbing the peace. We are on public property supporting an innocent kid, there's no way we're leaving."
"I won't ask you again, leave now." The group of GIW agents pressed in closer.
The supporter's friend placed his hand on their shoulder, face hard as he watched the GIW with observant eyes. "You are not the police, you have no right to go around throwing these non-existent powers around. I'd like to know your name and designation."
The agent straightened his sunglasses, face betraying no emotion. "I am Agent M."
"No, not your-"
"And you will find the police are not the ones in control of Amity Park, we are. There is nothing any of you can do to change that." The agents held their line strong, white suits glaring in the late afternoon sun and weapons clear on their belts. They made for a visually intimidating group compared to the ragtag group of locals that were previously just trying to speak for what they believe in.
The protestors were momentarily shocked into silence from this admission. Anger and fear lining faces in equal measure.
Paulins scoffed, drawing the attention of everyone gathered. "Nothing any of us can do about it? Everything you're saying sounds as if you white suits are a gang of criminals. And isn't that just telling?"
"We are government officials I recommend that you do not compare us to criminals like the ghost you are defending."
Rage passed over Paulina's face and she only grew louder. "How dare you speak about him that way. Danny is not a criminal, you people are. Do you know how many times Phantom has saved this town from being wiped off the map and you sorry excuses for government agents have damaged the town instead? I can list on my hand how many ghosts anyone has ever witnessed your organization catch but the damages you've done to property all over town is ridiculous. Near Casper High especially, you people put the whole student body at risk! When you should have been helping you instead completely ignore all civilians and attack the one person actively trying to help the situation. Don't even get me started on how you treat completely innocent teenagers, we aren't ever going to forget that incident involving the transfer student Gregor. Your entire organization is a harmful joke."
Annoyance started leak into the agent's figure and he finally glanced at the camera. "You're recording this? Turn that off this second."
"I think the hell not."
"Turn it off!" The agent took a heavy step closer.
Paulina took a small step back towards the group, placing herself further in front of Star who was becoming increasingly worried. "No! We are not turning this off, it is our right to record, especially while we're being threatened like this."
Agent M opened his mouth before abruptly closing it, lifting a hand to his earpiece and turning away to talk into it.
Star and Paulina shared a concerned glance before the agent turned back in their direction, a scowl on his face. "Stop this nonsense or you will regret it. The next time we will not be as forgiving." With this final statement Agent M turned on his heels and walked away, the other GIW agents silently falling in line behind him.
The camera turned back it's focus onto the group, taking in the ranging expressions of disbelief and annoyance. The young supporter wearing the Phantom shirt eyed the direction the agents had stomped off in distastefully. "Good riddance."
Their friend placed a comforting hand on their shoulder, his lips quirking up into a smile. "It is a good riddance, but I think that we should maybe be concerned over that last thing?"
"Pff, nah."
Star and Paulins made eye contact once again, silently communicating before Star shrugged. "That was uh interesting, so about what I was saying…"
The final clip took place on the steps of a sandstone building, the sun noticeably lower than the last clip, casting the two girls in a golden light. Star and Paulina stood side by side, the latter speaking to the camera once again. "Well everyone, we're ending the video here, it's been an eventful day for us."
Star smiled at Paulina before turning back to the camera, exasperated. "I'm sure there's gonna be some things that never make it into the video. Someone likes to be a little extreme in expressing her opinions…"
Paulina made an affronted noise. "It is not my fault there are idiotic bigots in this town!"
Star giggled, reaching out to squeeze Paulina's hand in her own. "I know Paulie, it's cute that you're so protective." Red tinged the other's cheeks as Star continued. "Either way, we're doing what we can to show the world that there are people here that love Phantom. So many of us here who genuinely support Danny, Sam, and Tucker."
Paulina focused her attention from being wholly on Star back onto the camera. "They have us and we aren't gonna be so easy to shut up." Paulina winked. "You'll be hearing from us again soon."
AN:
Hey everyone, so it's been a long time since I've updated this story and all I have to say is uh my bad. I obviously had no intention of this happening, I've been busy I guess graduating and all that junk but still yeah um whoopsie. I didn't abandon it though! I'm just really bad keeping any sort of consistent schedule for writing and for that I really do apologize.
It's been so long there's probably people getting notified for this when they totally forgot what this even is and to those people sorry! And to the people who came back to this over the past two to three-ish years and thought mournfully there's another fanfic never to be updated again, super sorry for that!
Whatever boat you're in, thank you so much to the people that like this story. I'm going to be doing my best to keep updating, I never plan to abandon the story no matter how long it takes me. The one thing I won't give you is a promised date of an update, every single time I do that I curse myself so that is not happening. Just know that I will update again, someday.
But anyways I have the rest of the story plotted out now, at least the dramatic big plot lines of it. I think I once said there was only supposed to be 2 or so chapters left and that was in fact a lie on my part. Either way, I am slowly working up to a peak in the story and let's just say the Amity Park based crew is going to be important in the future.
This is just the reminder I'm a lot more active on the Archive of our Own side of things and you can read this story there too, I plan to continue updating Escape Vlog on until it is complete but after that I'll probably be moving completely to AO3, just as a warning.
But anyways, until the next chapter everyone!
