Epilogue
May 1932
As they watched Sybbie play with Samuel in the distance, Lucy and Tom cuddled close on the picnic blanket. The two children had certainly grown close over the years, and Lucy and Tom were very glad they had such a strong bond. Tom remembered what it was like to have older sisters, and he was glad his son had that. Sybbie was always looking out for him and making sure he was included wherever possible. Though she was growing into a proper young lady who was rather fond of reminding the adults in her life that she was going to be 12 in just a matter of weeks, she always made time to play with her brother and get dirty with him.
"You know Samuel is going to have Sybbie's dress caked in mud by the time they come back, right?" Lucy remarked, breaking their silence and practically reading Tom's mind.
He chuckled. "He totally is. That boy of ours is rather a scoundrel."
Lucy laughed, "A 3-year-old scoundrel, what are we going to do with ourselves should he come for us next?" she teased.
"I suppose we can't send him to the garden and have him washed with the hose before he comes in the house?"
"Oh we certainly can," Lucy said, "I'll send some soap out to you so daddy can give him a proper lathering up."
"You monster!" Tom joked. "Why must I be the bad guy again?" he whined. His son did not enjoy soap, and he was not looking forward to navigating the tantrum of a tired and stubborn three year old trying to avoid getting clean.
"Because you need the bath just as much as he does," Lucy teased, to which Tom faked a frown so that he could get a kiss in consolation. "Does that make it better?" Lucy asked after pressing a kiss to his cheek.
"No, but this would," Tom said, leaning in to give his wife a kiss on the lips, making her giggle and smile brightly at him when they pulled back.
They were brought out of their teenage-like flirting by a fussing sound, causing Lucy to look down at the baby in her lap. Saoirse Claire had joined the Branson family just four months ago, and she made it complete. She was a calm baby who was obsessed with her mummy and daddy. Lucy bounced the baby gently in her lap. "It's alright, my love. Don't let daddy's whining wake you up," she teased.
"Hey!" Tom interjected in mock offense.
"See, he's always complaining," she teased with a pretend roll of her eyes. She really couldn't ask for a better husband. Tom was very involved and helpful, and he looked on the bright side most of the time. He was the perfect husband. But that didn't mean she didn't enjoy teasing him from time to time.
"I only complain when I can't be in your arms," he crooned.
"Yeah right," she said, curbing her husband's flirtation even though she found it adorable.
"Would you mind taking her? You know your voice always settles her," Lucy asked after a moment.
"Of course," Tom said as he took his baby girl in his arms and propped her up in one arm so he could show her where her siblings were playing. He began speaking softly to her about what her brother and sister were doing and rubbing her stomach gently with his other hand. This settled her in an instant, and it made Lucy so proud and grateful. Her husband truly was an incredible father, and she felt so blessed to have him and their children. Leaning in, she kissed his temple a few times.
"I love you," she whispered in his ear.
"I love you, too," he answered, looking over at her with a smile that made his eyes crinkle in the most genuine way that made her heart almost burst with happiness.
A giant smile of her own broke out as she said what was on her heart, "You are my world. I'll love you forever. Thank you for being my biggest blessing."
Cupping her face, Tom leaned in and said, "I will love you and our children from now until forever. I thank God for you all each and every day. I love you."
Love overflowed in them both as they leaned in and kissed one more time, sealing their promise to always love each other just as much as they did in that moment. And it was a promise they would always keep.
