Kate never did go to the bathroom, just paced in the hall as she was on the phone with Victoria. Eventually she stopped and watched the door for the room Chloe was in. Instinctively she reached up and twiddled with the cross on her necklace. She was glad Victoria was being nice to her, though she suspected it had something to do with Max. She thought back to when Max kissed Victoria in the class room, she would be lying if she said it hadn't made her jealous. It seems they have the same taste in women at least. Then her mind went to Chloe. She certainly was playing along with Kate's lie about them dating. Not that Kate minded it, She enjoyed it in fact. Though it scared her. She didn't want to be hurt again. Kate couldn't see Chloe doing that on purpose but she might by accident.
The nurse walked out of Chloe's room. Finally, Kate thought. She started toward the room and put on a pleasant smile for the nurse when they caught each other's eyes. "Miss Marsh. How are you feeling?"
"Alright, though I will admit I am tired. Oh, I've arranged for a cake to be delivered to Chloe's room. I hope that's okay?" Kate was still fiddling with her cross. The nurse noticed and placed a hand on Kate's shoulder.
"That girl has a guardian angel watching over her. You." She gave Kate a gentle, knowing smile. "I'll make sure that cake gets to her with no problems. I have a guess it's a strawberry shortcake?" A small smile went across Kate's lips and she nodded. "Now go on, get back in there to your woman, and get some rest." Kate's smile broke into shy grin. She slipped past the nurse back into Chloe's room.
"Katydid!" Chloe cheered and gave Kate a silly salute. Kate chuckled and went to sit in her chair. "I have news." Kate raised her eyebrows, waiting. "Number one. I have a morphine pump that I can push." Chloe was wearing the biggest grin she could manage.
"Oh my," Kate sighed playfully and sat in her chair.
"I haven't pushed it. Yet. But more importantly. Number 2, I asked if I was allowed to let my girlfriend get in bed with me." Kate's cheeks flared at that. "And I am allowed, We just have to keep our hands to ourselves. 'No hanky panky' as the nurse called it. I told her that wouldn't be a problem with us, since we're both abstinent." Chloe held out her hand to Kate, in hope. "But seriously. I don't have much of a conscious but what's left of it is telling me to tell you to get in this bed and get some sleep. So please?"
Kate chewed on her lip, trying to decide what to do. "I can just go back to my dorm and-"
"And not get any rest? I know you hate that place right now, you told me yourself when we were in my truck. I'm not as fragile as I look, even with bullet holes in me. You just have to lay to my right side and don't put any pressure on my wound." Chloe wiggled her still extended hand to Kate. "Pretty please?"
Kate took Chloe's hand but stared down at the white tiled floor. "Chloe… You know it's a lie that we're together. You don't have to play along anymore. You're awake. I already did my duty by staying by your side until you woke up. Plus, your Mother and Step-Father are going to show up soon. The hospital has probably already told them that you're awake so they could be here any minute. I already lied to them once."
"Wait, wait. You told my mom we're dating too?" Kate nodded slightly, keeping her eyes to the floor. She was mentally preparing herself for the retribution from Chloe. Chloe just chuckled and shook her head in disbelief. "Brave of you to do that, how'd she respond?"
Once again Chloe Price surprised her. Kate finally looked back up her in confusion. "Um… Suspiciously? She didn't say anything though. They were both just really worried about you. I never thought I would see David Madsen crying."
"Damn, That jerk was crying over me?" That hit Chloe harder than she thought it could.
"Yeah… Chloe I can't keep lying about us." She went to pull her hand from Chloe's but Chloe tightened her grip.
"You're really gonna make me just come out a say it aren't you." Chloe sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose as she blushed. As she moved her left arm she was careful not to jostle the IV too much. "I wouldn't mind dating you Kate. Fuck I gave you the book that gave me the courage to come out as gay. That book was the last gift I ever got from my Dad. I never even mentioned I liked girls to him but he just knew. When he died and Max moved away I was so lost. I got that book after he had passed and it really helped me find my courage again." Chloe looked away from Kate's eyes that just pulled her in. She wasn't good with letting her walls down and being vulnerable. "And you… I don't know. It seems like you wouldn't mind it either?"
Kate's mind was reeling from all the revelations. How could Chloe see her like that? How could Chloe give her something that precious to her? Kate stood up to stand just at the edge of Chloe's bed. "But… But I'm-"
"Amazing? Caring? Brave? Gentle? Cute? An Angel? The best friend I have right now? Should I go on?" Chloe had looked back at Kate. Back to those gorgeous hazel eyes, ignoring the blush on both of their cheeks. "I'm not asking you to jump my bones as soon as I'm healed up. I know you would want to take things slow. That's fine with me. I'd prefer that in fact. I'm still pretty broken after Rachel disappearing on me. And if it would make you feel better we can tell my Mom the truth that you only said that to be allowed to stay here at my side. Which I really appreciate. I didn't want to wake up here alone… I really hate hospitals. We could even keep it a secret? Or just say we're best friends and you did what you thought you had to." Chloe's speech was starting to quicken. "I don't know, sorry. We can still be friends right though? You probably wouldn't want to be with someone like me anyway. It's not like-"
Kate grabbed Chloe's hand with her other hand as well. Trying to calm someone other than herself for the first time in awhile. "I do Chloe. I do want to be with you." Kate smiled brightly at Chloe, a couple stray tears of joy sliding down her cheeks.
Chloe's worry began to melt away. "… You do? Really?" Kate nodded her head then mustered up as much courage as she could manage. She then raised Chloe's hand and lightly kissed her knuckles. Chloe's heart skipped a beat and thanks to the ECG it was audible.
"I'll warn you now, this won't be easy for us."
"Good, I've never really liked easy." Kate giggled a bit and put Chloe's hand back on the bed. "Um, would you like to lie down with me?" There was a hint of nervousness in the question.
"Yes, I would like that."
Chloe grinned happily and Kate matched it. With her thumb she rubbed at Kate's hands, silently asking her to let go, which Kate did. Chloe slowly and carefully wiggled her body over to the left of her bed as much she could. She grabbed at her pillow and pulled it over so Kate would have room on it as well. She looked down at the room she had made, it was less than she had expected. "I think you might have to lay on your side?"
"I'm a side sleeper anyway. But… Um, Could you put your arm around me?"
"Anytime."
Kate smiled again and carefully climbed into the bed next to Chloe. Halfway down Chloe put her arm under Kate's neck and wrapped it around Kate's back. "Oh sorry Katydid, do you mind pushing my morphine button before laying down? I'm kinda starting to feel it."
Kate let out the most tiny scoff. "You haven't yet?"
"I wanted you to be here."
Kate narrowed her eyes at Chloe before playfully rolling them. "Bad Chloe." She looked over, eyes following the IV. "Guess it's the big red button?" Chloe grunted an 'Mhm' and Kate leaned over Chloe and pushed the button. Chloe's nose was filled with lavender as Kate's hair veiled her face. Chloe tried to burn the smell into her memories. Kate fully laid down after that. Half of her head on the pillow, the lower half on Chloe's shoulder. She was sort of on her side, sort of laying on top Chloe's uninjured side. "Is this okay?"
Chloe moaned in pleasure, feeling the drug seep into her body. "Feels like heaven." Kate sighed slightly but then Chloe gripped Kate's hip. "I meant this, us. Sure the morphine helps. But I needed this more."
Kate smiled against Chloe's shoulder. She gave a silent Thank You prayer to god before bravely putting her right arm across Chloe's chest, resting her hand on the other girl's shoulder.
"Get some rest Katydid."
"You too."
