This story is sort of based on Legacy.
It occurred to me, no one Naruto's age ever helped Naruto. He was always alone... and that is wrong. He has no real friends, so why not give him one? See what happens.
Three years before Graduation
Rei was immediately drawn to the blonde boy in class Everyone ignored him, except for their nameless sensei who kept on scolding him, often times for no real reason. Rei had just transfered to this class, so he had never met the boy. So the moment every one in class was sent to lunch and it was clear that the boy had nothing to eat, Rei hurried over to him, just as he went to sit on a swing by the Academy. People were staring, cold as ice and hateful as the Ninetailed Fox was said to be.
"Hiya!" Rei started, holding out his bento box. "I brought some extra food, want some?"
The boy, with his pretty blonde hair and blue eyes, frowned in shock. "Why, don't you hate me? Everyone else does."
"I can't hate you if I don't know you. So, food?"
The boy nodded, a shy smile crossing his face. "I guess... what do you have?" And soon they were sitting by the tree, just chilling and eating his food. Naruto said he hated veggies, but after eating them like Rei made them he was over the moon. "These are yummy. Thanks... Rei, right? I'm Naruto Uzumaki."
"Rei, I have no last name. I'm an Orphan, my parents died immigrating here when the Kyuubi came and attacked. They had no name to give me but I am okay. I like being Rei"
Naruto frowned. "Same, I think but the Hokage said my family name was Uzumaki."
"Really? Who are your parents?"
"He won't tell me!" Naruto scowled.
Rei got angry for his new friend. "Well, fuck him." Naruto snorted, stunned.
"The Old man's my friend he... helps I guess."
"How?"
"He takes me to the Ichiraku ramen shop and ..." Naruto looked at his feet, sighing.
Rei sighed himself, gently speaking. "Why care for that old fart, has he really done anything for you?"
Naruto shook his head. "Not really."
"I thought so... I'll be your real friend, Naruto. No should be so alone, you seem really cool."
Naruto beamed. "So do you! Maybe we'll be on a team, and kick some real ass together!"
"Maybe so... but you'll have to study really hard. I saw you were having some issues in class, I could help you?"
Naruto went pink, then smiled with the warmest expression Rei had ever seen. "I'd really like that."
"Same,... let's go in. I'll sit next to you."
And like that, they walked into the Academy, eager and happy and for once, at least for Naruto, not alone any longer.
For Rei, he was angry, not at Naruto but at the idiots glaring at them and whispering as they hurried back to class, at the Sensei who glared at Naruto as he sat down and at the world for daring to hurt anyone so pointlessly...
He vowed, in that moment, to never let Naruto be alone again. If only he knew the cost of that choice.

This was heartful and fun.
