Logan had been thinking about asking Rory to marry him for a while. Ever since he agreed to be her boyfriend, when he thought it would be difficult, it has felt like he is finally at home. Even when he moved to England for months, he could not stop thinking about Rory. He knew if he was going to ask Rory to marry him, he needed to do it in private, somewhere with a lot of significance to their relationship. It took him a while to think, and then he came up with it. He would ask her in the Yale courtyard, where they had met.
Logan knew he had to ask Lorelai's opinion first. He couldn't ask Rory to marry him without her blessing. He approached Lorelai's front door one day and knocked twice. When Logan came in and sat on the couch, he explained to her that his love for Rory was eternal and that he can't imagine a life without her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the little velvet box. He gently pulled it open, revealing a shiny diamond, worth probably way too many karats. At first Lorelai felt too stunning to speak. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. She thought that Rory was too young at first. She had just graduated Yale; she was still looking for the job of her dreams. But then, Lorelai sat with it, she realized that she had waited so long for happy ending. Nearly approaching 40, she was still not in a relationship with the love of her life. She then knew, she didn't want that life for Rory.
"Yes" Lorelai said, Logan beamed.
"Thank you" replied Logan. "I know we didn't always see eye to eye but I hope you know I only have Rory's best interest at heart, same as you".
"I know" quiet, but sincerely.
The next step was to ask Rory, the most daunting one. He knew that Rory could never come to a decision lightly, she always wanted to make a pro con list. She always needed to sit with the facts and the statistics before coming to her conclusions.
"Hello" said Rory when Logan opened her apartment door.
Logan was shaking in his suit, but he tried his best to conceal his nerves.
Once they arrived at the restaurant, Rory was oblivious. She was used to Logan giving her extravagant gifts and setting her up with fancy dates; tonight, wasn't anything too new. The whole dinner, Rory and Logan sat there, everything felt relatively normal. Rory didn't suspect a thing. After Logan paid the bill, he told Rory that he had a surprise location he was going to take her to. He handed her a blindfold and told her to put it on.
"Just put on the blindfold, we aren't going far" he said while smiling.
"This is giving me déjà vu" she replied.
This was just like one of their first times hanging out. He took her to a Life and Death Brigade event; she had to be blind folded to keep her from locating where they were going. She remembers sitting in that car, the excitement of not knowing exactly where she was going but also getting a glimpse at her future. She loved getting to be adventurous with Logan.
"We're here" Logan said once he stopped the car. "Excited?" he asked.
"Scared" Rory said back.
He held her hand as she walked out of the car. He was nervous but tried to keep his voice from wavering. He knew that Rory loved him, but for some reason he felt uneasy.
"Okay, you can take the blindfold off" Logan tells Rory.
"Okay…" she replies with a wary undertone.
She opens her eyes and sees candles all over the courtyard. The shining lights are sparkling in Logan's eyes, and he is beamed with pride. She looks around some more and realizes that the coffee cart he once rented for her was in the corner. A cup of coffee ready for her a top of it. She is too stunned to even contemplate words. She doesn't know how to feel, what to say, and most of all, she doesn't even feel like this is real. She almost has the urge to pinch the side of her leg to make sure that this is real. After her heart rate starts to slow back down to a normal pace, she looks at Logan and sees the expression on his face. Although she is pretty sure she knows what is coming next, it still doesn't stop her bottom lip from dropping the second she sees him get down on one knee. Her mouth was hanging open so wide her lips began to feel dry.
"The first time I saw you I felt something I had never felt before" Logan says.
"I don't know what to say!" Rory exclaims.
"Just let me finish Ace" Logan chuckles. "I know that we're young and I know that we have a long future ahead of us, but I don't want to continue building a future without you being there with me every step of the way. I would have never gotten through my business failure without you. I would have probably never graduated Yale without you. I want to marry you and spend the rest of my life with you" Logan finishes and catches his breath before his final sentence.
"Will you marry me" Logan asks.
"I…" Rory stumbles.
"I…don't…know what to say"
"Well, you already said that" Logan nervously replies.
"We are so young! I just graduated college! I don't have a job yet!" The words start flooding out of Rory's mouth. The questions are coming to her too quickly for her brain to catch up.
"I know all of those things, but if we already want to be together for the rest of our lives, why can't we start that commitment now?" Logan questions.
"I need time to think, I don't know what to do!" she follows up saying "this is just unexpected.
"If you need time, I'll give you time" Logan says this with defeat and disappointment in his voice.
The drive home in silence all Rory can think about is that her heart and her brain are telling her two different things. She knows she loves Logan, and her heart was beating for her to say yes. But at the same time, she feels like she doesn't have enough experience living life on her own to commit to marriage so early. Her parents recently got married. And divorced all in the same year. She doesn't want that to happen to her and Logan.
He drops her off at her apartment and she waves back to him at she reaches her front door. He makes a small smile back and her before turning away and driving off.
Rory walks into her bedroom and throws herself onto her bed immediately. She can't believe how such a nice, seeming simple, night could have gone so south. As she looks up to her ceiling, she realizes that the only person she needs to talk to right now is her mother.
"Hey mom" Rory says on the phone.
"Hey kid" Lorelai replies.
"I have something to tell you. Logan took me to Yale and he gave me a fancy dinner and there was candles and coffee and he sort of…kind of…asked me to marry him"
"I already know…" Lorelai states uneasily.
"WHAT?!" Rory yells. "How do you know"
"He asked for my blessing a few days ago. What did you tell him?"
"I told him I need time"
"Why would you say that" Lorelai is shocked.
"I thought you were never a huge fan of him"
"That was before I had a conversation with him. I know he loves you and you love him. Don't follow in my footsteps and hold back on allowing yourself to be happy. Love is rare, and tough. But it's worth it, trust me. I wish I had never let Luke pull away. He made me so happy. Sometimes you just need someone to make you happy. Stop worrying and just let it happen. You can still build your career and focus on your work while being married. Don't just think you have to choose one of the other. This isn't the 1950s, you're not Donna Reed" Lorelai jokes.
"You're right, I love him. I must go. Love you" Rory says.
Rory glances across her room and sees the rocket. The rocket that he got her when he moved to London. The rocket, standing tall in her room made her realize that anyone who would give her a gift so special, is someone who she deserves in her life. The rocket symbolizes that he would put himself in suspended animation if it meant getting to live a lifetime with Rory.
Rory snatches the phone off her nightstand and dials the numbers to Logan's cell.
"Hi" Rory says on the phone.
"Hi" Logan replies.
"Yes".
