The warm morning light woke the two dragonets from their dreamless sleep. They stretched and their sleepy muscles started to wake. Their mother, the Queen Toadstool, called from below their cozy vine hammocks. Heavenly did NOT want to get up. She wished she could stay snuggled under her blanket all day, or pick fruit with Bubbles, her sister.
"Get up! Unless you want to be late for school!" Mother called from below.
Heavenly groaned, and Bubbles shot her a questionable look. But it was for sure. She had to spend another long day at school. I don't even learn anything! She thought furiously. She would much rather be in the forest with Bubbles and their friends. She took a glance at Bubbles- a beautiful Nymphwing. She was a soft cream color, with dark green and peach-orange speckles. Her scales reminded her of a ripe guava. Heavenly was the complete opposite. She was a matte mint green with a dark green undercoat, splotches- not to be confused with speckles, slightly tinted wings, and frill. Both of their wings were transparent like a normal Nymphwing, but usually they are tinted pink, purple, white, or completely clear. Their wings were tinted green. It was something that rarely happened to dragonets. Green wing dragonets were rumored to have stronger powers than others. The two sisters also had a black snout, legs, and ears like every Nymphwing.
While she was getting ready, she calmed her racing thoughts by thinking about her best friends, which she would see soon. She started to pack her small black pouch with her books and a few mushrooms. It fit perfectly around her chest, almost like it was made just for her. She thought about her and Bubbles's best friend, Sakura. A pretty light pink dragonet with patches of darker pink spots. She loved how she never treated her and Bubbles differently because of their royalty. They all together seemed like a perfect trio- perfectly balanced. She packed the last book in her bag, put on her glittering skyfire tiara, and flew out of the royal cave next to Bubbles.
She was going to her dreaded school.
She flew off and felt stares from everyone around her. She did not like attention. Sometimes she wished she could just disappear. At least she got along great with her sister. They did so much together. They read the same series of books, liked playing the same games, and when they could, even did their assignments together! She started to think about the other dragonets again. This was a bad habit she had. She would think about random things, and lose focus easily by thinking too much. Then Bubbles started talking- she snapped back into reality.
"… Heavenly?" Bubbles said wearily.
"Yes?" She responded, turning her head to look at her.
Sigh, queenly etiquette, I know… Stare the dragon in the eyes or else you are being disrespectful… She thought madly.
Suddenly, she slammed into a tree.
"Owww…WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?" Heavenly yelled.
"I did! Well, I was about to but it was too late!" Bubbles said, trying not to laugh as she helped Heavenly up.
"Lovely." Heavenly scoffed.
This is going to be a great day, Heavenly thought sarcastically. Soon, they arrived at school, Monarch Hall. They walked into the packed lunchroom, and went over to the sleek, pink, table that all their close and distant friends were at. They walked over to some dragonets, chatting as they came. They set their heavy bags down as Bubbles went to get some breakfast. Heavenly sat down on the sleek, pale pink seat. They all were eating the odd breakfasts they were served. Well- all except for Heavenly. She didn't like the food. Most of them didn't like it either, but they were starving.
Before they knew it, the first bell sounded and they had to hurry to class before they were late. Heavenly flew to her first class, Mushroom Gathering. She sat next to her friends as the teacher started taking attendance. She half-listened to the pale green teacher as she ranted on. Like I would have to gather mushrooms as a princess. I don't know why Mother even enrolled me in this class.
Luckily, the class was over quickly, and the second bell rang. She was going to history next. Every day, she would wait outside until the grumpy teacher let them in. She was always one of the first there, and she leaned against the sleek, pale wall. She took in a few breaths and sighed. Gotta write down lots of boring notes… again. Every. Single. Dayyy.. She thought madly.
Suddenly, a bigger, slightly dark green dragon with white speckles, and small, rectangular glasses came up behind her and pulled her little black bag. As she turned around- startled, and she realized some of the white speckles were actually a pale pink. She was familiar with him being annoying because he loves to annoy people. Especially her. But it slipped her mind today, as she was really tired.
"Ugh." She muttered as he kept trying to make her flinch.
Her friends Mist and Cloud came over by the hallway on their way to class and started pestering her about working with them on a project. Like I would ever join a project… I have so much to do already as a royal... Why do they keep asking me if they know I can't join? The teacher finally let them in. Heavenly slowly hobbled over to her seat and took out one of her notebooks. It was covered with sketches of mushrooms and flowers. She opened the smooth cover and started to write. None of the information the teachers taught was helpful or clear. Like how they never let a single one of the NymphWings go over the mountains that bordered the small town. It didn't make sense. WHY is this class so PAINSTAKINGLY SLOW?!, She wondered.
The bell rang and she was glad to put the class behind her for the day. She was excited because she had Nymphology class with her bright and insightful teacher, Mrs. Daisy. Her class always smelled like fresh, sweet, fruit. Plus, Bubbles and Sakura were also in this class . She taught about what careers you could have as a Nymphwing, and what they all do. Soon the bell sounded for lunch. The trio grabbed their things and headed out to the courtyard. They walked to the musty, pink table that they sat at everyday. They put their bags down and walked over to the line for the sloppy lunch. Heavenly didn't eat the lunch because it was gross, but she still went and waited in the line with all her friends. She only waited in the line because all of her friends got the slop from the cafe.
They all got their gross, steamy lunch and sat down. They talked about the things that happened over the last time they saw each other. Heavenly would hand out everyone snacks she brought in her bag. They then went outside into the hot sun. They were chatting with each other when loud noises erupted from the other side of the courtyard. Two dragonets, Caterpillar and Poppy, were starting to fight. They started to punch and claw each other. The old security guard walked over and broke them up, looking slightly bored. Poppy looked exasperated. There was deep rose-red blood on their faces and claws. They both were tired and were taken to the nurse's office. Suddenly, the voice of the principal came on the intercom.
"Attention all students. The school is going into lockdown. If you are at lunch, report to your Nymphology class." Upset and nervous murmurs ran through everyone as they walked to class.
"What's happening?"
"Are you okay?"
"Are we in danger?"
Suddenly, the lights went out.
