Monday, November 1, 1993. Well, very much has happened in the chess world, right? There's what we call a "schism" in the world chess championship. What can I say? What Kasparov and Short have in common with the great Fischer is their squabbles over the way FIDE handles the world championship... and the money. No doubt the PCA they set up will dole them out a lot of money, now that their match has wrapped up. "The important thing to me is what a person gets out of playing the game! Money," said Fischer in 1972, twenty years before his own so-called World Chess Championship rematch with Boris Spassky. Meanwhile, Karpov currently leads Timman in the "other" world championship fight. Well, anyways, that's not the point of my article today.
Recently it came to my attention that Ami Mizuno, the winner of the Japanese Junior Chess Championship in 1990, recently played in another tournament with a rather... apt name? The World Chess Tournament, as if we needed to add to the confusion. I learned about this from my old friend, Boldizsár Juhász: Mizuno won this tournament after easily overcoming my friend! Ah, and if only the Polgár sisters weren't of this generation; then I would have been able to challenge the great Portisch and Sax. C'est la vie. Strangely, the tournament was of a knockout bracket variety, and the record of the final game between Mizuno and her opponent, known only as Berthier, is lost. Moreover, Mizuno had not actually participated in the 1991, 1992, or 1993 Japanese Junior Chess Championship tournaments! Masanobu Nogami won the 1991 and 1993 editions, while Hiroshi Morioka won the 1992 tournament; both have since earned the FIDE Master title. Funnily enough, the young prodigy Yevgeniy Moiseyevich Klein finished second in all three of those tournaments! Poor kid can't settle for silver for long; he'll get his chance one day. In any case, I decided to honor an old friend by publishing her games once again...
