A feeling that Artemis had not felt for a long while had fallen on her again; Dread. Dread of what was to come, what would happen to her now. What was to come. She did not know if she would come out of this meeting without a feeling of absolute horror and terror-
And yet it seemed that the fates did not care, no, the universe continued as it always had, without a care in the world for her struggles. She silently cursed herself- why did it have to be her? Why did her stupid father and uncle even get into this conflict?
It seemed the rest of the gods had snapped back to reality at Hera's proclamation. Hermes as always, sat restlessly,a personification of his duties, the messenger god always had to be somewhere else. It seemed Ares and the wine god were complacent as always; even such a shocking event had not made then much more serious. Aphrodite had a look of mixed shock and- concern? No time for her to ponder now. The look on Apollo's face broke her heart though- pure sadness for his sister. The usually cheerful sun god had slumped on his throne. Poseidon and Zeus both looked pissed- they would not have this. The pure aura radiating off them itself would have ended the lives of most mortals. Her mind barely registered these details though- it could not happen.
Her life flashed before Her eyes- Delos, ancient Greece, Rome, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Britian and the US, no moment in any place where the fire of the western world had burnt could match the absolute searing pain and terror she felt.
It felt like a slow poison coursing through her veins- dissolving herself up from the inside. She could not open Her mouth to speak- in pure shock. Athena, the one with something to say as always, spoke. A tone of pure seething rage- one that made it clear that she would not accept any challenge.
"By all the gods, have you lost your mind?" She snapped at Hera. "DO YOU THINK I WILL MARRY ANY SEA SPAWN?" Poseidon did not even bother to acknowledge the jab, deep within his own thoughts. "I SWORE ON THE RIVER STYX TO.BE.A.MAIDEN. YOU WILL NOT MARRY ME OF. TO THINK YOU EVEN HAD THE IDEA TO MARRY ONE OF US OFF? TO HADES." She raged, As the warrior goddess within Her lashed out against the council. She had calculated, and she remembered. Perseus.. not the current one, but the son of Zeus. Zeus had made a promise.. in exchange for allowing him to be raised at her temple.. and the aid she gave to him, she had given him one favor on the Styx. She had not used it. She had completely forgotten about it, but the desperate goddess held that as Ammo. If they even suggested her name, she would fire her bullet.
And now it was Artemis's turn to rage. Screaming greek profanities at her father.. at Poseidon, and Hera for even mentioning the idea.
Her anger finally boiled over - years of being reserved with a carefully crafted temper, 2000 years of it. 2000 years of withholding herself, shattered in an instant. Just like glass. Her rant ended when Hera had shouted silence again.
"YOU will obey the will of the council, Artemis and Athena. It will happen. Now out of the two of you, both are bad choices. Artemis, for obvious reasons, and Athena, because of Annabeth and more obvious reasons." She now had a sickly smile- Artemis did not like where this was going. "As your father. Zeus has the right to choose which one of you will get married off." Now both her and Athena had turned to Zeus. He was still in straight up shock- but he had comprehended her words. His temper exploded again.
"ABSOLUTELY NOT, HADESNO, YOU WILL NOT FORCE ME TO DECIDE. TO THINK YOU WOULD EVEN DO THAT- YOU SICKEN ME HERA. I SWEAR ON THE RIVER STYX, I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE ONE DAY!" Hera waved him aside. "Quiet down Zeus, you are not going to risk your power and disobey the council. We both know that. Your Grief may be real, but you must pick."
Posidien was also slumped in his throne- he was not going to lose his temper, not now. This was a decision that would impact one of his children dearly. Triton was the best choice- but both of them would deny him. He knew in the back of their head either of them would default to Percy- his son was too amazing for his own good. Loyal- no Hubris- his fatal flaw was literally the best one possible. A sick choice now… the mother of Annabeth, one who had hated him for centuries.. or a man hater that would probably see Percy dead. How could he possibly choose? He finally understood what it was like to be a mortal parent- so powerless. If he had to choose one at all- he'd rather it was Athena. But he knew the goddess would have some trick up her serve to get out of it.
Zeus, after what seemed like years of thought, even though it had been minutes, spoke up. "I apologize to my daughter, Athena, but it has to be you. Atleast you have fallen in love before… but I can't do this to Artemis.
Artemis had a sigh of a relief- just for a second… before Athena pulled her trap card.
" All those years ago, for me taking care of your son Perseus, you promised me any favor on the Styx. Well I call that now, dear father." She spat. She had saved herself from this.
And Artemis's world- it had crashed down for a second- and then it had got back up- and now it had been gone in a Nuclear explosion. She felt such a pain in her body- her head pounded in pain and fear- the poison of the thought of marrying anyone ingrained in her head- but she saw she was outnumbered in voting. She might of even taken on all the other Olympians- but then the memories of the hunt came back to her. She could not risk destroying herself. She would find a way out, but it was not going to be by coming to her end. 'Fine then." She seethed. It took a insane amount of will for the hunting Goddess to spit those words out. But she had gone through the five stages of grief 2 times in the span of 30 seconds. Now she had no choice. Artemis was tempered, but she wasn't that stupid. She swore in her mind though, she would have her revenge.
Now Hera turned to the god of the seas. "Now you will choose which son you marry off." Posidien thought maybe he had a chance to save his son from this whole mess- maybe he had a chance to.make sure he didn't go the rest of his life hating his father. "Fine then, I choose Triton."
And Artemis exploded again. Not that pig of a
man, no, she would not marry him if it was to save the world. There was only one son of the sea that she could tolerate for 30 seconds. She shouted and screamed. "It must be Perseus, I will accept nobody else. You think I will be married to that pig? Atleaet make life bearable for me, so I don't have to kill him in 30 seconds! I swear on the river Styx I will not marry anyone but Perseus!"
And the oath was bound. Poseiden knew this was coming- but even then he had a mental breakdown. He slumped even further into his throne. He could not save his son. What a useless father he had been. Away from him, and now he would.likely be getting his son killed. He sighed "If it must be Perseus, I cannot stop you."
Artemis went from ultra pissed to just super pissed- at least marrying Perseus would not be so bad. He was still a male. Hera continued on- "Very well then, we will summon Perseus here, in one day's time. I will give you all one night to sleep on this."
And they all flashed away, one by one. Artemis thought of only one place she could go- and she flashed to Delos. Sobbing her eyes out on a cliff on the shore, the moon shining bright as always.
I'll start writing longer form chapters in a bit- I'm still getting irl stuff sorted out, but leave a review if you have anything to say.
