Chapter 3

Two years went by. Kiara and I became best buds. Almost sisters. One day, she asked me a question.

"Did you know a lion named Kovu?" She asked, not looking at me. I sat there and looked at her. I did know him. He was my friend, almost like a brother. Almost.

"Yeah, why?" I asked.

"Well, I saw him yesterday." She still wouldn't look at me. I just stared at her. "Remember the fire?"

I recalled the fire. Simba had let Kiara go hunting by herself. But something happened. A fire broke out where she was hunting but no one knew how. I had gone hunting when she came home.

"He saved me."

I looked her. Kovu saved her? What was Zira planning? We sat in silence for a while.

"We should head back." I said, changing the subject. I got up when Kiara stopped me.

"He's staying with us."

I stared at her, surprised. I just looked away and walked back to pride rock, Kiara following close behind me.

We got back, Simba standing by the opening of the cave. Kiara walked past him, heading into the cave.

"How was she?" He asked me.

"She's fine. You need to stop worrying." I told him. He stared at me then looked away, like he was on look out. "What are you doing?" I asked him.

"I'm watching Kovu." He muttered. I looked in the direction he was looking in. On the bottom of the path stood a dark maned lion. He was built and and healthy looking. His green eyes glanced at me. His face lit up, surprised.

"Kala?"

I glanced at Simba. He was scowling. I looked back at Kovu and walked up to him.

"Hey Kovu. Let's talk somewhere else." I replied, glancing at Simba. He walked back into the cave, still eyeing Kovu. Kovu and I walked a little while in silence.

"I thought you died." Kovu finally said, quietly. I sighed.

"Well, I have family here."

More silence.

"I missed you." He mumbled. I smiled, rubbing my head against his neck.

"I did too." But not fully. I hated his mother and he could be part of a terrible plan. I didn't fully trust him.

"You know, I did like you when we were younger." He said, blushing. I stared at him, my face flushed.

"I do to, but as a friend." I said. His face looked hurt but it came and gone.

"Okay.."

We had walked in a circle, ending back at pride rock.

"Well, good night." I said, leaning in to lick the side of his head but he pulled away. I pulled back, hurt. I walked up to the cave opening and went inside. All the lions were asleep. Simba sat straight though, as if he was waiting for me.

"What is he planning?" He asked.

"How should I know?" I retorted, calm but stern. "We were just catching up." I walked past him, walking toward Ponya. I laid next to her, licking her forehead. She smiled, sleepily. I smiled back at her. She was like a real mother to me.

"I'm just worried-"

"I get it, your just doing your duty as king." I interrupted. He just sighed and walked over to Nala. I laid my head down. He was just watching over us. He treated me like I was his cub. I closed my eyes, trying to calm my mind. Finally I went to sleep.
