The Prophecies and the Protest
Hermione sat in the courtyard holding a golden string. Harper sat next to her with a large music box, having the back open to show some crystals she was playing with. She had a couple more crystals in her hands and was looking at them and the ones in the back.
"How is this supposed to work?" Hermione asked.
"The crystals eliminated the magical interference. Now, inside the building is a thousand years of magical buildup which makes it impossible without larger one, but outside in courtyards and other places where our rally will be held, this should be enough," Harper said. Hogwarts herself had helped Harper with this problem in her dreams.
"Pretty," Harry said, coming up, a bag behind his shoulder.
"My Flamel task," Hermione said holding it up. "Spinning straw into gold just like Rumpelstiltskin. It's apparently an Alchemy ability – a hard one according to Nicholas."
"Your now Hermionestiltskin," Harper joked to Hermione, who gave her a little push.
"Make a nice chain or bracelet," Harry mused, taking the gold and looking it over. "Oh, I am done with all my finals. You two?"
"Finished this morning," Hermione said.
"Me too," Harper said.
"Dobby says the House Elves are ready for the rally tomorrow with food," Harry added. "Fred and George said they have fireworks ready and joint protests in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley are setting up as well."
"We'll be able to hang all the decoration tomorrow morning. Nicholas and Perenelle have agreed to help," Hermione said. "And weirdly, Peeves is being helpful. Something about no chaos without Peeves."
"The Quidditch Teams are ready for the flying demonstration," Harry mused.
"I think that's everything," Hermione said.
"Almost everything. Harper, need a hand with the music?" Harry asked.
"Ah, I got this," Harper said, taking out one crystal and putting another one, a bigger one, in. She then turned it 90 degrees and then all the crystals glowed. "It's ready." Harper said closed the back, putting in a compact disc, and pushing play. The tune of a familiar song came out.
"Young man, there's no need to feel down…" the music came out.
"Harper," Harry said as Harper stood up as the first verse continued.
"You know you have to," Harper said, and Harry laughed as the song came to the famous chorus – both singing out 'It's fun to stay at the YMCA' and did the famous dance. Hermione laughed out as others turned to look at them. The two continued to sing and dance through the song.
"You have more than muggle music, right?" Hermione asked the two – the pure bloods might accept the muggle playing device, but they would want songs they are familiar with too.
"We have both muggle and magical bands from around the world. Even The Weird Sisters have released some CDs," Harper said. "Mom and dad were more than willing to send Helia and Fawkes with all the music we need."
"Nice! Anyone know where Neville is?" Hermione asked.
"Divinations final," Harry said, and Hermione gave a nod. "Still don't get why he didn't drop that course."
"I think he was too afraid too," Hermione mused, a little sadly at this.
-Harry Potter-
The tower room where Divinations was held was hotter than ever before; the curtains were closed, the fire was alight, and the usual sickly scent made Neville cough as he stumbled through the clutter of chairs and tables to where Professor Trelawney sat, waiting for him before a large crystal ball.
"Good day, my dear," the woman with over-large glasses and way too many beads around her neck said softly. "If you would kindly gaze into the Orb… take your time, now… then tell me what you see within it…?"
Neville bent over the crystal ball and stared, thinking this was stupid but stared as hard as he could, willing it to show him something other than swirling white fog, but nothing happened.
"Well?" Professor Trelawney prompted, delicately. "What do you see?"
The heat was over-powering, and his nostrils were stinging with the perfumed smoke wafting from the fire beside them. He didn't know what to do, so decided to pretend.
"Er –," Neville tried, "a, urm, dark shape?"
"What does it resemble?" Whispered Professor Trelawney. "Think, now…"
Neville cast his mind around and it landed on Buckbeak – the protests they were having later.
"A Hippogriff," he said firmly.
"Indeed?" Whispered Professor Trelawney, scribbling keenly on the parchment perched upon her knees. "My boy, you may well be seeing the outcome of poor Hagrid's trouble with the Ministry of Magic! Look closer… does the Hippogriff appear to… have it's head?"
"Yes," Neville said, firmly.
"Are you sure?" Professor Trelawney urged him. "Are you quite sure, dear? You don't see it writhing on the ground, perhaps, and a shadowy figure raising an axe behind it?"
"What?! No!" Neville protested, starting to feel slightly sick.
"No blood? No weeping Hagrid?" Professor Trelawney tried.
"No!" Neville said firmly now, wanting more than ever to leave the room and the heat. "It looks fine, it's… flying away…"
Professor Trelawney sighed at this. "Well, dear, I think we'll leave it there… a little disappointing but I'm sure you did your best."
Relieved, Neville got up, wondering if there was more to this exam but glad the Professor seemed to have given up.
He picked up his bag and turned to go, but then a loud, harsh voice spoke behind him.
"It will happen before the weekend is done!" Neville wheeled around. Professor Trelawney had gone rigid in her armchair; her eyes were unfocused, and her mouth was sagging.
"W–What?" Neville asked, shocked.
But Professor Trelawney didn't seem to hear him; her eyes started to roll. Neville stood there in a panic – she looked as though she was about to have some sort of seizure or something. He hesitated, thinking of running to the hospital wing – and then Professor Trelawney spoke again, in the same harsh voice, quite unlike her own:
"The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. This weekend, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his Master. The Dark Lord will rise again – with his servant's aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. This weekend… the servant… will set out to rejoin… his Master…"
Professor Trelawney's head fell forwards onto her chest. She made a grunting sort of noise. Then, quite suddenly, her head snapped up again.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, dear boy," she said dreamily, her voice back to normal. "The heat of the day, you know … I drifted off for a moment…" but Neville stood there, still staring. "Is there anything wrong, my dear?"
"You – you just told me that the – the Dark Lord's going to rise again… that his servant's going to go back to him …" Neville stated, still in shock.
Professor Trelawney looked thoroughly startled by this.
"The Dark Lord? He Who Must Not Be Named? My dear boy, that's hardly something to joke about! Rise again, indeed…?" She stated.
"But you just said it!" Neville couldn't believe she didn't know what she'd just said. "You said that the Dark Lord–"
"I think you must have dozed off too, dear!" said Professor Trelawney, her voice a little less wispy than normal at this, but not as harsh as it had been just now. "I would certainly not presume to predict anything quite as far-fetched as that!"
Bewildered, Neville decided not to question anymore as he climbed back down the ladder and the spiral staircase, wondering…
Had he just heard Professor Trelawney make a real prediction? Or had that been her idea of an impressive end to the test?
-Harry Potter-
Neville had gone straight to the Courtyard to find his friends, his mind reeling on the prediction he had just heard.
"Hey, done?" Harper asked Neville.
"Are you okay?" Harry added, looking up as Harper spoke to their friend.
"You're pale," Hermione input.
"I… I think Trelawney has just made a prophecy," Neville said, making the trio pause at this. "She said the Dark Lord will rise again."
"What do you mean?" Harry asked.
"She went all ridged and not like herself at all. Her voice was all harsh and she said… she said this weekend the Dark Lord's servant will be freed and find him and he'll come back stronger than ever," Neville wad shaking and Harper put an arm around him, making him sit down.
"Voldemort will come back stronger than ever?" Harper asked, a little skeptical.
"Yeah," Neville said. "I asked her after, and she didn't have a clue. Seemed quite offended…"
"It's Trelawney," Hermione spoke up at that. "She's one for the dramatics. I wouldn't take it too seriously, Nev."
"Yeah. Maybe she just wanted to give you a fright," Harper added.
"Maybe…" Neville stated, not convinced. Harry wasn't too sure either but, like Neville, decided not to question it further.
-Harry Potter-
Draco Malfoy was not having a good year – with the 'Malfoy Sucks' badges everywhere, even in Slytherin, he wasn't sure how those four had done it, but almost the entire school was against him. But at least he loved the ritual classes he had been attending with the Flamels.
At this moment, he met the Flamels in the normal classroom he attended with them.
"Mr. Malfoy," Nicholas said. Three mirrors had been set up in the room along with candles. There was a ritual circle drawn on the floor with the mirror and candles inside the circle. "Did you study up on the ritual I want you to perform for your final task?" They had done some smaller rituals that, in Draco's opinion, were meaningless but this one was something else entirely.
"I did," Draco said.
"Well, in your own words describe it to me," Nicholas said.
"It's an ancient ritual from some old dead culture," Draco said.
"Which one?" Nicholas asked. "You must be exact."
"Egyptian," Draco said.
"Greek," Nicholas sighed, and Draco frowned as he got it wrong. "Continue."
"It's an ancient ritual. They call upon their gods to get a look through time," Draco said and Nicholas gave a nod. "I didn't really understand what that meant though. Will I be seeing the future?"
"Three mirrors," Nicholas said. "The ritual is actually called The Pathways. The first mirror will show you the past; things that have led you onto the path you now walk, while the middle mirror will show things in the present; things that have either just happened, are happening now, or will happen maybe tomorrow or the day after – the last mirror will show you a possibility of where the future leads, should you continue walking the path you are on."
"Wicked," Draco said with a smirk, not usually using that language and if he ever did in front of his father, he was sure he would get a cane to the head, but it was the only way he could describe what he was feeling.
"You will need to say the chant in ancient Greek. Say it to me now so I can make sure you are pronouncing everything right," Nicholas instructed, and Draco started the chant he had memorized; Nicholas correcting some wordings and Draco repeated the correction until he got it right. The chant was old, and it translated to roughly: 'gods of old I call upon your power to show me what was, what is, and what will be'.
After doing the chant a few times Nicholas nodded. "Very good. Now, kneel before the mirror and start the chant, lighting the candles as you do so," Nicholas said and Draco nodded, going into the middle of the circle and getting down on his knees. He started the chant, lighting the three candles at certain times in the chant.
As he finished, the room around him seemed darker. He could no longer see Nicholas Flamel and only the three mirrors. The flame he had lit on the candle in front of the first mirror increased and the mirror glowed.
Within the mirror there was images and he wasn't just seeing, but he could hear what was being said too: He saw his father, much younger than he currently was, vowing to follow Lord Voldemort, receiving his Dark Mark; Draco had to smirk at the images but that smirk disappeared at the next scenes the mirror showed: His father and several others dressed up, torturing and killing muggles and muggleborns. Draco saw the fear, terror, and pain in their faces – heard their screams – and it made him feel sick. Then the scene switched to his father apologizing to Voldemort for some failure, and Voldemort using the Crucio on his father. Draco heard his father's scream before the mirror went blank and the candle went out.
The second candle's flame grew higher now, and the mirror glowed.
This mirror showed the present and Draco recognized Hogwarts and tried not to groan as the mirror showed him the 'Fab Four' as they were called: Harry Potter, Harper Evans, Hermione Granger, and Neville Longbottom. They were setting up their rally that would take place tomorrow. Draco saw Harper walk into the Slytherin Common Room with Daphne and Tracey, high-fiving them and informing them everything was set before it went to what Draco assumed was the protest – the entire school out on the grounds chanting, singing, and dancing. Draco saw the fireworks with words like 'Save Buckbeak', 'Malfoy Sucks', and 'The Ministry Is Wrong' lighting up the grounds. Then, the other three Quidditch Team doing some type of flying demonstration with flags and banners. The last thing Draco saw was the Fab Four and Ron Weasley sneaking out of Hagrid Hut where Dumbledore, Minister Fudge, and what he assumed was Buckbeak's executor walking in, the five going up a hill where they were clear, and Draco could see a shadow of the man lower an axe; Hermione and Harper crying out as Harry put his arms around them. Neville coming closing to Hermione and Ron to Harper. Then, the candle went out and the mirror went blank.
The last candle flame got bigger, and the mirror glowed – a look into the future.
Draco was very focused on this one. He saw himself, older, not by much – it might have been a few years – and he was bowing before Voldemort himself and taking the Dark Mark too. He was being ordered to kill Albus Dumbledore. Draco saw himself plotting with a jinxed necklace, a poisoned bottle of wine, and a strange cabinet. He saw himself on top of the Astronomy Tower holding his wand to Professor Dumbledore, having disarmed the man; Professor Dumbledore was trying to reason with Draco and Draco saw the fear in his own face. He then saw Severus Snape come up and kill Albus Dumbledore in his stead! Draco wasn't sure why his face was pale at this, as he didn't like the man but killing him...? The next thing Draco saw was inside Malfoy Manor. Harry was pushing him out of the way and grabbed several wands off a table – his former House Elf, Dobby, was there and proclaimed he was a Free Elf as someone Draco knew was his Aunt Bellatrix threw a knife at them. Then, he was in a room that looked like it was in Hogwarts, but Draco had never seen it before – there was piles of random rubbish and Goyle was there setting it on fire. Draco tried to get him to stop but Goyle would not listen to him anymore. Draco saw people flying over the flames to get out, fire all around himself… and then the candle went out and lights were normal.
No more images in the glass.
"What?! No! No, what happened?!" Draco yelled at the mirror. "I need to know. Did… I Did I….?" Draco couldn't say the final words. Did he just see his own death? Being burned in a fire started by one of the boys who always followed him around? Started because of a war? Draco knew that somehow. A war where he sided with Voldemort. A war he did not want to fight.
"Draco," Nicholas said, pulling the boy away from the mirror. "The ritual is over. You will see no more."
"I'll do it again!" Draco protested.
"The magic doesn't work twice so soon," Nicholas implored. "Take a deep breath, calm down." Nicholas handed Draco a cup of water and Draco took it. "Congratulations, however, as you passed. I am confident you can perform many rituals."
This didn't make Draco feel any better, though. Right now, he didn't care that he'd passed this test, all he wanted to know was what happened next and how did this moment lead to his possible death in a fire?
-Harry Potter-
Later that afternoon, Harper had bid her brother and friends a temporary goodbye as she headed back to her Common Room.
"So, anything we can do last minute?" Daphne asked as Harper entered the Slytherin Common Room.
"No, everything is set for tomorrow," Harper said, smiling and holding out her hand for her two friends to give her a high five. Harper heard a moan and looked to see Draco was lying on the sofa by the fire, giving them a look. He seemed pale. What Harper didn't know was what she, Daphne, and Tracey just did was one of the things Draco saw in one of the mirrors - greet each other and high-five one another.
Draco looked away from them and into the flames.
"What did the Flamels do to him…?" It was Pansy Parkinson, a Slytherin female Harper had very little contact with, given her and the rest of the Year 3 Slytherin girls had a split-dormitory. "He's been like this since he got back from their test."
"I wasn't there," Harper shrugged. "We were learning different things."
"Well, I am going to go complain to Snape," Pansy said determinedly, walking from the room.
"Give me a minute," Harper said to her friends, suddenly curious and walking over to Draco.
"Leave me alone, Pansy," Draco mumbled, having not looked up to see who had come over but had sensed a person come up.
"Don't insult me," Harper said, making Draco turn. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"We see ghosts every day," Draco pointed out.
"It's a muggle expression," Harper said, seeing her mistake. "It just means it looks like you had a shock. What happened with the Flamels?"
"Do… do you believe in seeing the future?" Draco suddenly asked, and Harper was shocked she got a response from the boy.
"Well, I don't take Divination. Does that say something?" Harper responded.
"So, you don't believe it's possible at all?" Draco tried.
"Not necessarily," Harper mused. "America on a whole don't invest much in that type of magic but Native Americans tribes have some magics within them, and I know a lot of Native Americans… but even they warn what we see might not be exact. There are signs that that can be interpreted. There are people able to see things, but if you believe that you can one-hundred percent tell what will happen in the future then you believe there is no free will. That everything is set and no matter what you do you can't change it. I can't believe that. I believe whatever is seen about the future is just a possibility. I think we make our own futures. Make our own choices."
"So, if you see something about the future you don't like, what would you do to avoid it?" Draco asked.
Harper thought about the prophecy Neville himself had just heard. They couldn't completely dismiss Professor Trelawney as half-baked, and they knew that Peter Pettigrew had long since escaped death, so it was always a possibility that her prophecy was telling some sort of truth - especially if Perer Pettigrew would find his way to Voldemort this weekend. "If you don't like what the signs are telling you about your future, then change your future, change your path," Harper said.
"Change my path?" Draco said, his eyes going wide at that. "Thank you!" Draco jumped up and actually gave Harper a hug, surprising the girl before running out.
"What was that about?" Tracey asked.
"Not a clue," Harper said. "But I think I need to take a shower now."
….
Draco ran to the owlery as fast as he could.
Once there he took out parchment, ink and a quill from his bag and wrote a note fast, begging his father to stop the execution of the Hippogriff. He found his owl and attached the note to him.
"Get that to my father as fast as possible," Draco said, his owl giving a hoot before leaving the owlery and flying away.
If he could stop this execution, he would change the future… or at least change his present-future. He tried to wrap his head around that one.
-Harry Potter-
Albus Dumbledore had seen many things over his life and as Headmaster of Hogwarts, but this day would definitely go down in the history books.
Almost the entire school had come together to save a single Hippogriff – even the ghosts of Hogwarts had got in on it. Peeves had been leading some charmed toy Hippogriffs marching through the halls and other ghosts echoing out the 'Save Buckbeak' chant.
A stage had been made where a muggle music device was playing music. Harper, Harry, Hermione, and Neville were getting the students excited too – they had a blowhorn and between songs were calling out things.
"We're going to show the Ministry we're upset!" Harry yelled. "Remember we are the future!" Cheers came out at that.
Hagrid was in tears at the support the school was showing him, and Albus had to give him a smile. Fireworks started soon after, and even though it was midday, and the sun was shining bright they were very clear. Words such as 'Save Buckbeak', 'Malfoy Sucks', and 'The Ministry was Wrong' shone in the sky, while some just made a giant Hippogriff in the sky.
"How many of those do you think they have?" Minerva asked Albus, watching from the top steps of the Castle with him.
"Knowing the Weasley Twins, enough to last all day and night," Albus mused and then saw Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel helping a student with a spell to stick a banner to the side of the castle. "Nicholas, what are you doing?" Albus called to his friend.
"Fighting one last good fight before we die," Nicholas responded back.
"Don't tell me you're so old Albus you don't remember what it's like to fight the good fight?" Perenelle added.
"Never, Lady Flamel," Albus said with a smile, nodding his head at the two and giving them a smile as he continued to watch the protest. Cedric Diggory had come up to grab Harper to dance – the girl smiling. Albus gave a smile at this – he always loved watching young love.
-Harry Potter-
Draco took a breath as he walked out to the protest towards the Fab Four. He could see Harper being pulled off the stage to dance.
"Evans, Potter," Draco said, making the two turn to him. "I contacted my dad to try to get him to stop the execution..." the two were shocked. "He said he couldn't, even if he wanted to, which he does not. There's nothing I can do…"
"That's not exactly true," Harper said. "You can join."
"Join?" Draco asked.
"The protest, Malfoy," Harry added. "Join in."
"Actually, we could use the Slytherin Quidditch team," Cedric said, having put an arm around Harper to listen to this. "All the other three have agreed to do a flying demonstration. It would look better with four. If you can get the team on board... I did hear they were kind of pouting Gryffindor won this year." Ginny's elder brothers, Bill, and Charlie had pooled money and gotten her a new broom for Christmas and the Gryffindor Team had managed to win the cup this year thanks to her.
"I think I can get them on board," Draco said with a nod.
"Then get them in their uniforms and on their brooms. We're meeting on the Quidditch field in an hour," Cedric said and Draco gave a nod and walked away. "Didn't expect that."
"Me either," Harper said and Harry gave a shrug as well as he saw Hermione dancing with Dean and gave a frown.
-Harry Potter-
Albus Dumbledore was surprised when Amelia Bones showed up, along with two familiar Aurors – one being Nymphadora Tonks and the other, her classmate, Diego Caplan – a young man of Spanish heritage who had attended Hogwarts alongside Tonks and MC. He had been the best dueler in school so his acceptance into the Auror Division hadn't been a surprise to the headmaster.
"Madam Bones, what are you doing here?" Albus Dumbledore asked.
"Minister Fudge ordered me to come. The demonstrations here is also happening in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley and starting to spread," Amelia Bones said. "The Minister was hoping you would consider ending it here so other places would end it."
"If my students want to show support to our Groundskeeper, I will not end it," Professor Dumbledore said and Amelia gave a nod, having figured that would be the answer.
"Then I will be leaving Auror Tonks, and Junior Auror Caplan here. Just to make sure things don't get too out of hand," Amelia Bones said.
"Of course. I will set up rooms for them in the Castle, since this will be late and they are welcome to stay for the weekend," Albus said. "And congratulations on becoming a full Auror, Ms. Tonks."
"Thank you, Headmaster," Tonks said with a smile.
"She won't tell me how she got the early promotion," Diego joked with a smile as the fireworks suddenly stopped.
"Our Quidditch teams!" Harry's voice was heard on the blowhorn, and in the skies all four Quidditch team flew in formation – several of the members were carrying flags and the captains held a banner saying 'Save Buckbeak', while several of the chasers were tossing a Quaffle around between them. There was an audible gasp from many students at Slytherins being involved, and Draco himself clearly being involved in this protest.
"Some school spirit," Amelia Bones said with a smile and Albus Dumbledore had to smile as well. He was very happy to see the school reuniting like this.
In the air, Draco too was very happy – when he had seen this in the mirror, the Slytherin Team had not been involved. It had taken a little bit of bullying from him, but he got the Slytherin Team involved in the fight, and if it meant he could change what he saw, and he vowed to himself he would.
….
The protest, indeed, went well into the night with the House Elves providing food and drinks. Everyone was shocked when a surprising guest showed up: The Weird Sister, the wizarding band, had come complaining they had not been invited from the start. The Fab Four were more than happy to welcome the four to play their music live, as they even brought a Chupacabra with them as they played.
The main singer had dragged Harry out on stage to sing with him, too, and when Harper yelled that she could sing somehow, she ended up pulled up as well.
Everything only ended when it was late at night and Albus Dumbledore came onto the stage and told everyone to go to bed. The students took a while, grabbing things, and getting to their Common Room while the Weird Sisters dismissed themselves to go and stay in Hogsmeade overnight. After that, Albus located the two Aurors who were talking over paperwork.
"Well?" Albus asked.
"The protests went to any village or area with magical communities. Fireworks were seen going off in Godric's Hallows, with a large group gathering at the Potter Memorial, as well as Puddlemere, Tinworth…." Tonks started.
"I understand," Dumbledore said cutting her off.
"Even places in Ireland and Wales joined in. I am also pretty sure my parents set off some fireworks," Tonks said and Albus Dumbledore had to give a smile at that. "The Minister is not going to be happy."
"Wouldn't the best course of action be to just not execute the Hippogriff?" Diego asked.
"Unfortunately, Fudge is a stubborn old wizard," Albus Dumbledore said. "And Lucius Malfoy has a lot of influence. Still, it was a wonderful party. Come, let me show you to your room…" With that, the two Aurors followed the headmaster into the castle.
-Harry Potter-
That night, despite the fun of the day, in his dreams, Godric Gryffindor and King Arthur worked together to train Harry this night. Merlin was even present, giving comments and telling Harry what magic he could use.
"Why so hard tonight?" Harry asked after a moment when they let him rest to catch his breath.
"Tomorrow will be a big day for you," Merlin said. "We can't tell you much, but tomorrow things over the year come to a head. Your godfather's life is in your hands."
"Then we better go again," Harry said with a nod, surprised by this revelation as he stood and picked up his sword.
-Harry Potter-
That night too, Harper found herself with Hogwarts again, taking the face of Rowena Ravenclaw.
"I enjoyed today's rally," Hogwarts said to Harper. "It was nice seeing the students working together instead of fighting. I added some kick into those fireworks myself."
"I thought some of them were extra big," Harper said with a smile.
"Harper, the Rat will make his move. You know this. The Prophet told your friend Neville," Hogwarts said.
"Oh… so that is real?!" Harper said, shocked by that.
"Yes. You might want to go and see Hagrid before Buckbeak's execution," Hogwarts said.
"We were planning on it anyway," Harper said with a nod.
Post Chapter Note: That was a lot for one chapter! I hope you enjoyed. A slight twist on the book there too. Hehe.
