The next thing Kate knew she was on the ground. The motorcyclist had given her a well aimed kick in the back and she had fallen face first to the floor. She felt pain in her left wrist that she had outstretched to break her fall and right ribs when her chest had hit the concrete.

"Kate?" yelled Jay's partner, Mohammed who was known as Mo. He had seen the whole incident and rushed over to the newest member of the team who appeared in pain of the floor. "You ok?".

"Yeah," Kate grimaced as she rolled in to her back before she tried to sit up.

"Don't move!" Mo said before pushing Kate back to the floor. His hands came to the sides of Kate's face as he tried to immobilise her neck as he had been taught to do on a recent first aid course.

"I'm fine," Kate repeated as she tried to sit up again.

"You could have sustained a spinal injury, Kate," Mo pointed out. "Best get you checked out. Can someone get an ambulance!" He instructed his colleagues as he kept hold of Kate's head. They were busy handcuffing the thieves who had been caught but Steve ambled over.

"I don't need an ambulance!" Kate argued looking at Steve for assistance. The over enthusiastic first aider was annoying her now.

Steve knew his ex-partner was pissed off and usually he would have helped her out, but he wasn't feeling so charitable today. "Mo's our certified first aider. Better do as he says," he informed Kate before radioing the request for the ambulance.

Bastard! Thought Kate. She could tell he was enjoying annoying her. How could their relationship have come to this? Tears pricked at her eyes but she wasn't going to give Steve the satisfaction of seeing them fall. So she sucked it up and refused to show any emotion at all.

The paramedics soon arrived and despite saying she was ok, Kate was placed in a collar and sandbags and put on a spinal board before being loaded in to the back of an ambulance. She declined anyone accompanying her. She'd rather be by herself.

Steve felt slightly guilty as he drove partnerless back to the police station. He quickly parked up and did a quick search of the inside of the car for any of his and Kate's belongings before he signed it back in for the night shift. He spotted Kate's USB still on the console and pocketed it. That was definitely not for prying eyes.

"You coming for a drink?" Jay asked once they had debriefed on the incident.

It was tempting but Steve couldn't do it. Not that night. "Nah," he said. "Better go and see how Kate is,".

"Alright mate," replied Jay. "Tell her I hope she's ok,".

"Will do," Steve agreed.

"See you next shift,".

Kate was on a trolley in a cubicle when Steve got to the hospital. She was free of all the equipment she had been put in by the paramedics.

Steve saw a look of surprise cross her face at his appearance which was soon replaced with one of annoyance before she rolled over onto her side, turning her back to him. He couldn't help but give a little smile in remembrance of Kate in a mood. She was kind of cute when she was all worked up. He couldn't pass up the chance of annoying her further, so instead of leaving her alone Steve walked round to where she was facing. The roll of her eyes was the only sign of his success at irritating her further.

"What's going on?" he asked.

"Just waiting for the doctor to look at the x-rays of my wrist and chest," Kate replied, before the swish of a curtain could be heard and the doctor entered.

"Right," he said cheerfully, " I've got some good news. Your wrist, is not broken so it's just a sprain. We can let you go with a splint. Your chest however is another story,".

"Let me guess," Kate interrupted, " four broken ribs,".

"Have you got x-ray vision or something?" the doctor asked surprised. His patient had correctly guessed her injury.

"I broke them fairly recently," Kate revealed. "I must have just aggravated it,".

"How did you do that?" The doctor asked.

"Got run over by an SUV," Kate answered.

"I think you need to brush up on your Green Cross Code and stop getting run over by things!" The doctor joked. Kate smiled before grimacing at the pain whilst Steve was left to wonder how Kate had come to be run over by an SUV.

"Will do Doc," Kate promised.

"You will know the treatment then,".

"Regular painkillers and deep breathing," Kate rattled off from memory. "And it's going to hurt like hell for the next couple of weeks,". The doctor nodded. She was correct. "Can I go home now?" She asked.

"Just let me get a splint for your wrist and you are free to go," the doctor said. He was true to his word and soon Kate was walking out of the hospital, albeit rather slowly, with Steve, trailing behind her.

They reached the main entrance of the hospital, and without saying anything, Kate started walking off.

"Where are you going?" Steve asked.

"Home," stated Kate.

"But my car is in that direction," Steve pointed out, indicating the opposite direction to where Kate was headed.

"It's okay," Kate replied, "I'll get a bus or a taxi,".

"Don't be silly," Steve responded.

"I'm not!" Kate retorted angrily. " I get it Steve. We're not friends anymore! You go and drink with your new friends and find a woman to sleep with, whatever. I don't care. I can get my own self home," she continued before limping off.

Steve watched her go before heading to his car. She had hardly moved any distance and looked in pain from Steve's vantage point when he had reached his vehicle. She would not admit it, but she was going to struggle to get home on her own. Starting the engine, Steve drove over to Kate and crawled along beside her at a snails pace as she headed to the bus stop located in the hospital grounds. He wound the window down once he was beside her.

"Get in the car, Kate," he instructed. Kate continued to limp along. She was stubborn, but then so was Steve. "Don't make me have to get out of the car and bundle you in to the passenger seat," he threatened.

"You wouldn't dare," Kate replied.

"Wouldn't I?" Steve challenged. They had quickly slipped into their usual banter.

"What makes you think I wouldn't yell for help?" Kate asked before a small grin crossed her face.

"Get in the car," Steve repeated. This time, Kate complied.

"Careful, Steve," she said, as she put her seatbelt on with a grimace. "It's coming across like you might actually give a crap about me now,".

Steve didn't comment, instead he checked his wing mirror before pulling out and joining the main road. "When did you get run over by an SUV?" he asked concerned once Kate had given him directions to her flat.

"A couple of weeks ago," Kate, replied without going into further detail. "I was healing well until today,".

The rest of the journey was completed in silence, each of the occupants in the car lost in their own thoughts. There was so much they wanted to say but knew it wasn't the right time.

"Thanks," said Kate as they pulled up at her flat whilst undercover. She carefully got out of the car. "See you next shift, unless you finish your case beforehand," she added before closing the passenger door. She still had no idea what Steve was doing undercover and how his case was progressing.

Steve watched until she was safely inside before driving off.
