"How are you feeling?" Penny asked, jotting down notes.
Neil looked down at his cast. "I'm fine." He obviously looked down. Satomi comforted him. "It's okay. You can pursue another passion other than soccer."
"But I've played soccer ever since I was a child! How can I move on?"
"Hey, I moved on once." Penny assured him.
"You can join my Glee Club if you want."
Neil stayed silent. "Who exactly ran over you anyway?" Penny asked.
"I don't know. Some crazy golf driver."
"It could've been intentional." Satomi said with an angry expression.
"Looks like we have a mystery on our hands..." Penny said as she dialed the number Naomi gave her.
"It was a good thing you called. I heard there was an accident at Hallowway yesterday." Naomi crossed her arms. "Someone could've gotten killed."
"We need to figure out who did this. That person could run over someone else!" Penny yelled.
"You're pretty riled up this morning." Naomi noted. "Yeah, I'm riled up because a 15 year old boy got run over and now he can't fulfill his dreams."
"We better investigate. Though in this case, we don't have a body or clothing to examine because he's still alive. We should instead investigate the place that it happened."
"So Maria, did you find anything when you arrived at the scene?"
"How should I know?!" Maria angrily answered.
"We need to find what happened when you arrived."
"I guess we had a 911 call, presumably between 2 pm and 3pm. From a boy, presumably studying at the same high school as Neil."
"We should interview him when we find him."
The soccer field was empty, with only an outline of a person. Though in this case, the person hadn't died, rather, everyone thought he died. Thankfully, Maria assured everyone that Neil was okay, that he just had a fractured leg.
"So this is where it happened..." Naomi spoke as she examined the crime scene. Penny looked at the golf cart, having been located 5 meters from the crime scene. Whoever had been inside it had already evacuated the cart. They must now find out what was inside.
"Hmm..." Penny saw something wedged inside the seat. It had an odd smell as Penny pulled it out. "Is this...a sub sandwich?"
"Hmm...a meatball combo. Seems like the suspect had been hungry...and it seems to be torn in half." Naomi commented. She picked up wooden shards left on the ground with her forceps. "Hmm...this might be useful."
"What is that?"
"It looks to be painted wood, blue and red paint. We better identify where this came from. In the meantime, we need to interview the people who were here yesterday."
"But there's so many students! How are we going to interview them all?"
"We only need to talk to the ones that had encountered something odd yesterday...and I think we got our first witness."
Naomi looked at a poster showing a talented young woman, singing.
Inside Halloway High, Kat Conley was rehearsing for her next concert. Yesterday had been a downer since some person had stolen her money while she was fundraising, so she had to cancel the show. But that was simply a setback. Maybe this time, she might get more!
Her rehearsal was interrupted when Penny and Naomi Kimishima came into the room.
"Hello, Miss Conley. We heard you had been through something troubling yesterday and we would like to interview you." Naomi said in a serious tone.
"Why is that?" Kat asked, looking curious.
"You see, a soccer player got into an accident with a golf cart yesterday," Penny explained. "We're trying to figure out who the driver was."
"Hmm...I never knew any golf cart drivers. But something happened. Some student stole my fundraising money while I was holding a concert."
"Can you tell me who they were?" Naomi asked.
"I don't know who she was, but she had red hair."
"You could ask the teachers who this red haired woman is so you could locate your money."
"I know. But right now, I need to perform for my next show."
As the two left the studio, Penny had a suspicion on her mind.
"Do you think the red haired girl is the person who ran over Neil?" Penny asked.
"We can't assume, Mannette. We need to keep looking for evidence."
Penny nodded. "We should learn more about this girl."
Michelle Satton, 14 year old news reporter for Halloway High school was sitting on her desk, reading a recent news article they had published.
"News Report! A 15 year old soccer player was found to have been run over by a golf cart! Said culprit has not been identified nor found. The skateboarder who called 911 couldn't see who drove the golf cart. The Gym Teacher has been notified and is now suspending all golf cart activities until safety is ensured."
"Hmm...'The culprit hasn't been identified nor found.' When that happens, I'll have an even greater scoop!"
"Ahem..." Naomi interrupted, coming into the office. "Hi? You aren't one of the teachers, are you?"
"No, I'm a forensic scientist who's trying to solve the incident that occurred yesterday."
"Ooh! This'll be a greater scoop! Tell me, what cases have you solved?"
"Not now, dear. You seem to have a lot of information since you're a reporter. Tell me...what girl has red hair?"
"Umm...I think I know who she is. She's one of the members of the student council. I think her name was Honey Lafayette? She's been acting...pretty off lately.
"Honey...take note of this, Mannette."
Penny nodded and wrote the information down on her notebook."
"I also heard of a skateboarder who called 911 in the area. His name is Russell Becker, but many call him Rusty."
"Thanks for your help, Miss Satton."
"I'm glad to help! Anyways, tell me about yourself!"
After managing to get Michelle Satton to stop attempting to get info out of them, Penny and Naomi went back to the crime scene.
"We need to split up." Naomi spoke seriously.
"Why do we need to split up?"
"The school is extremely big and busy. By splitting up, we may be able to interview more people. You should look for Rusty."
"Okay, Doctor Kimishima."
Penny left the scene as Naomi watched. When Penny was gone, Naomi pulled out a back of powder and scattered it on the golf cart's steering wheel. She then flashed a UV light onto the wheel, revealing fingerprints.
"Perfect."
Rusty had just bought a new skateboard. He stared at it, smelling the oakwood and paint.
After the incident yesterday, people thought Rusty wasn't going to recover. They thought he would just break over the fact his old skateboard was broken.
But Rusty had been more concerned over Neil. Neil was his friend and they had been through a lot together. The thought of Neil getting hurt was more uncomfortable than losing his skateboard. And though his parents had managed to buy another one, Rusty still didn't feel like doing tricks around the park.
"Hey, are you Russel?"
"It's Rusty."
Penny smiled softly and walked over to him. "We are trying to solve who kil- I mean, hurt Neil."
"Neil? Is he okay?"
"Yes...but he won't be able to do soccer for a while."
"That's sad. He always loved soccer."
"Yeah, but he's recovering. So...did you see who ran Neil over?"
"No...it was a blur. I tried to save Neil, even sacrificing my red and blue skateboard in the process, but it ran him over. I called 911 and the paramedics arrived."
"What were you doing before the incident?"
"I donated money to Kay's concert, but then some red head girl stole it! I tried to catch up to her but lost her. Then I remember seeing Neil on the soccer field and a golf cart was speeding toward him and...you know the rest. People believe it was simply a sudden fall, but I know that person who drove Neil over is responsible."
"Yeah...so you said a red head had stolen the money?"
"Yes I did! I saw it with my own eyes. She had black eyes and was wearing a white star headband in her hair."
"Is she Honey?"
"I think so. She and Neil are rivals, as I heard."
"Good description. Anything else you want to add?"
"I...I think she bought a sandwich."
"What kind?"
"A meatball sub combo sandwich."
"Aha! I think we solved this mystery."
Naomi and Penny met up in the office. "So, did you get anything from Rusty?"
"He said a red head, presumably Honey, stole money from Kay's concert for a meatball sandwich combo. The same sandwich that we found in the golf cart."
"That is not all. I heard from Little Guy that the fingerprints on the cart's steering wheel belong to Honey." Naomi spoke in a good voice.
"Really? How'd you know?"
"I used something called Fingerprint Powder. It shows fingerprints under a UV light."
"Nice! But...why would Honey do such a thing? Is it because she hated Neil?"
"We might need to look more into her backstory. She must be here somewhere."
Before they could leave to find Honey, a scream was heard.
"What was that?!" Penny screamed as Naomi and her ran down the hall toward the screaming.
The two women made it to where the janitor's closet was. They saw a crowd of people, surrounding something. It seemed quite a spectacle.
"Move over!" Naomi yelled in a voice that was uncharacteristically like herself. The crowd made an opening for Penny and Naomi to walk through. When the two got to the janitor's closet, they found feet sticking out of the closet opening.
"Oh my good..." Penny said, covering her mouth.
The body of a red haired girl laid on her side. There was white, bubbling foam coming out of her mouth. The half of a meatball combo sandwich laid beside her hand, now lifeless.
Penny fainted, falling to the floor as Naomi stared silently at the woman's body inside the janitor's closet.
It was the body of Honey Lafayette.
