"So I can rewind time by dying…"
"Wait, If it's triggered by my death, then it already assumes I'm going to lose!" Subaru put some more thought into this ability of his.
"Actually, I don't think I have ever heard of a quirk that could rewind the world's time. A quirk this powerful… could it even exist?"
"For all I know, it could even be someone else playing a prank on me with an illusion quirk… But even so," Subaru remembered his promise to Emilia back there inside the underpass.
"If there is even a 1%... No, if there is even a one-in-a-million chance, that everything I saw was real. I can't just sit around and let Emilia get killed again!" That was Subaru's conviction. If he has the power to, under no circumstance would he allow death to befall Her.
A thin middle-aged man entered a convince store. The sound of the man's breath would make most people assume he is a heavy smoker, despite not a whiff of tobacco omitting off him. His odd blond hair swayed just a little when the automatic door closed behind him.
Inside the store, he saw a person he recognized. This person was the son of one of his work friends, Natsuki Kenichi. This sight brought a smile to his frail face, and then he noticed what this boy was doing.
"Yo! You have reached the number of Natsuki Kenichi! I am unavailable at the moment so leave a message and I'll call back." Subaru was using the shopkeeper's phone, and if the stressed look on his face was any indication. He really hoped that his dad would pick up. Subaru had a look of deep thought for a moment, and then he handed the cashier his phone back and hastily left the store. While he did this, he gave no thought to the blond man near the automatic doors that he passed by.
However, that blond man picked up that something was wrong. The way Subaru was acting right now was concerning. If there was even a small chance that he could help, Yagi Toshinori would do his best.
"Shit, my Dad must already be on a mission right now. Calling the police was never an option to begin with. If they send police officers or any regular hero they will be slaughtered for sure. Emilia must be very strong to have been able to fend off the assassin for so long. Should I just find her and warn her? Maybe if she is more prepared we could fend off the assassin successfully this time…" Subaru let his thoughts spill out of his mouth, while he was hastily walking down the street. He failed to notice the blond man following him, who was too far away to hear him.
After walking around for 20 minutes, Subaru found her. Emilia was walking along a commercial street calmly. She was not alone as Puck was floating near her shoulder. Subaru thought about coming up to her and talking to her but he realized this would come across as weird. So instead, he totally didn't stalk her while thinking of a way to convince her of the danger she is in.
Between a spirit and its contractor, There exists a mental link. Both sides of the contract can choose to share their thoughts with the other party. This can be used to communicate discreetly without anyone else being privy to the conversation.
'Lia, act natural and don't turn around. There is someone following you, I can't sense any malice from him but that doesn't mean he can't be potentially dangerous.' Emilia was surprised by Puck's message.
'Huh? Why would he be following me, Puck?' Emilia messaged back to which Puck responded: 'I can't be sure, but hopefully it's nothing serious. We should try to lose him'
'I understand Puck, In that case… I guess test his seeking skills.' With that declaration, Emilia began moving in an erratic path, to try to throw off her pursuer.
"*Huff*, *Puff* Emilia-tan… Is seriously fast." Subaru managed to just barely follow her as she moved quickly through the streets. She moved into a not-so-well-maintained park and Subaru followed after her. By this point, Emilia stopped running and turned around with the intention of confronting whoever was following her. Subaru was worried that Emilia went into what could be described as the bad part of town. In his mind, should the assassin choose to attack Emilia again it would be in a place like this, where fewer people were outside, and none would care for another villain's attack.
So then, Subaru stepped in front of Emilia and Puck who both had a wary look on their faces. These three were the only ones who could be seen nearby.
Emilia spoke first. "Why are you following me? Do you have some kind of business with me?"
"I have… I have something to warn you about." Subaru, still slightly out of breath, responded. "There is a dangerous woman that is looking for you… If she sees you, she'll kill you!" Subaru's words surprised Emilia and Puck. Emilia was initially skeptical of this claim, but Puck reassured her he sensed Subaru wasn't lying.
"Killing me? Why would she want to do something so dangerous?" Emilia still had a hard time believing someone would be out to kill her.
"I don't know much, but I know someone is paying her for this," Subaru said to which Puck responded. "So then, someone wealthy wants Lia dead. And how did you learn of this?" Luckily, Subaru prepared an excuse while running after Emilia.
"It's my quirk, Please believe me, you are in terrible danger right now. The assassin could attack at any-." Before Subaru could finish his sentence, his eyes widened when he saw a blackly-clad blur approaching Emilia quickly from behind. His reaction was luckily quick, "Puck! Shield her!"
*Clang*
Puck was able to quickly form an ice shield behind Emilia.
A large knife then bounced off the shield, creating sparks.
Puck gave a thumbs up "Thanks for the warning, otherwise, this could have gone much worse."
"Nice one Puck. Thank goodness it's still nowhere near 5 yet so you are still on duty."
Subaru gave a thumbs up back to Puck.
The woman who attempted to cut Emilia just now stepped back with her knife in hand. She then looked at Puck.
"A Spirit, You are a spirit, correct? I've never cut open a spirit before. I wonder just how your insides look~" She licked her lips, and had a creepy smile after saying this.
"What a creepy thing to say. Obviously, the best part of a cat is its wonderful soft fur. If you are going to cut one open, all you'll find is gross hairballs." Subaru's words of wisdom didn't seem to resonate with the sadistic women.
"I'll never know unless I try, and besides. That's no normal cat." She prepared to lung at Puck, like a predator.
"You are right about one thing girl, I'm not your average cat. My name is Puck, and if it's my daughter you are after." Puck lifted his hands above his head, and many icicles formed above them. "Remember it all the way to your grave!"
Puck lowered his hands forward, and the icicles began shooting at the assassin one by one rapidly. The two began fighting, with Puck on the offensive. The assassin mostly dodged and deflected ice with her kukri knife. She didn't get a chance to attack due to the hail coming her way.
"So, I'm assuming this is the person you warned me about." Emilia, who was keeping her eyes on her enemy, said to Subaru.
"Yeah, that's right. She seems to have a habit of going for the guts so be careful."
"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind."
The fight between the woman and the cat continued for another minute. Subaru noticed that, unlike last time. The assassin was moving far faster, and Puck was failing to land direct hits on her.
'Lia, at this rate my mana would be exhausted before I could defeat her. I'm going to use some stronger attacks, if you can lend me some mana.' Puck used his mind link to talk with Emilia. 'I understand Puck, use whatever you need.' was her mental response back. And then, Puck began to radiate white glowing energy and he smiled.
"Oh my, you seem to have gotten stronger all of a sudden. Will you show me something special now?" She taunted him, Puck grinned back.
"I suppose I would, after all. I normally don't like it when things heat up."
Emilia formed a large ice shield to guard both her and Subaru. A moment later, right in front of the assassin. A tiny ball of air glowed blue incredibly brightly. And then-
*CRACK*
A shockwave traveled from where the air burned just a moment ago. Despite it hitting the ice shield before reaching Subaru's ears, he still heard some ringing from the sheer loudness of it. And yet, Luckily for him, this loudness allowed a certain blond to finally know where Subaru was after he ran off 20 minutes ago.
Of course, the explosion did some damage to the assassin who seemed to have a hard time standing after it.
"Wonderful… That felt wonderful!" Yet, despite common sense. She had a blush while saying these insane words.
"What can I say, I know how to please a woman. However, I do have a habit of getting a little rough!" Puck said, and then he made another explosion happen in front of her. This time she was more prepared, she covered her ears and opened her mouth in anticipation. And in a move that the laws of physics wouldn't approve of, she managed to jump back a few meters before the shockwave hit her. In this way, she was able to minimize the damage to herself in accordance with the square root law regarding shockwaves. But the consequence was her keeping her momentum, and flying off into an overgrown bush.
"Holy shit Emilia! Your cat has no chill."
"Well~ I'm more than just a one-trick kitten," Puck responded proudly.
"So then, Puck, did you get her?" Emilia asked.
"Hmm, It's hard to say. She seemed pretty strong for a girl, so I might not get to rest yet." Puck said.
"You're right, Puck" Subaru stated.
"Huh?"
"That woman, no, that monster, she won't go down this easily."
Subaru's statement was born out of his knowledge from the previous loop that she can regenerate and is hard to kill. Or so he justified to himself. In reality, there was a heavy feeling weighing on his nape, like a premonition of danger.
She moved silently behind the bushes, her target was clear. The black-haired boy.
On one hand, it was logical for her to target the weak link first. However, was calling this boy weak wise? She didn't think so. From the way he smelled, it was clear the most logical decision was to take him out now before he could show something he might have been hiding so far.
Subaru didn't know why, but he had a feeling he should turn around at this exact moment. When he saw the darkly robbed assassin flying towards him, he wasn't entirely surprised. And the fact he knew where she would aim for helped keep his bowels inside his body.
With a well-executed spin, Subaru managed to both dodge the strike coming for his stomach and kick his would-be killer in the shoulder with his back foot.
"Ah! I certainly felt that one." She said with a crazy smile on her face.
"Well then, I'll be seeing your bowls now, boy." She said and raised her knife, if she struck now, Subaru knew he wouldn't be able to do much. He was unarmed, dodging didn't seem realistic when his superhuman opponent was expecting it.
Everything seemed to slow down. Everyone, including the assassin with the knife before him moved slowly.
'All I can do is think, but my body can't move fast enough to dodge. I don't want to have to use return by death again.'
*Swoosh*
Subaru was unceremoniously blown back on his bottom by a strong wind.
What he saw brought shock to his eyes and to everyone else who happened to be watching. In the place where he stood a moment ago, stood the number one Hero himself, All Might.
"Don't worry young Subaru, I am here." All Might said in his typical booming voice.
"All Might?! Thank god, we're saved." Subaru said in relief.
"Oh? The symbol of peace himself has come to stop me? This really is my lucky day~"
"I recognize your face. What is the Bowel Hunter doing all the way in Japan?"
"I'm being paid handsomely to kill that girl over there." She said, glancing at Emilia.
"As for this boy, I don't make a habit of leaving witnesses."
Subaru grimaced "Bowel Hunter? What sort of scary nickname is that?"
"Well~, it refers to my hobby of opening my victims's entrails."
"I suggest you surrender, Bowel Hunter. I don't mean to brag, but I have beaten tougher villains before."
The 'Bowel Hunter' smiled. "Surrender? When facing such an exciting opponent?
I can't possibly do that. I wonder, All Might, are your entrails the same as those of other heroes?"
"I can't say if my guts are to your liking, but I can promise you won't get a chance to check."
The 'Bowel Hunter' held her knife tight and her expression turned serious.
"Forgive me for getting excited, I quite enjoy facing tough opponents. So then, I will introduce myself as is respectful in this country."
"Elsa Grainhert, the Bowel Hunter."
"I can't in good conscience offer respect to a villain like yourself, so then-"
In what seemed like a blur to everyone watching, All Might disappeared from his initial position and appeared right behind Elsa with his hand raised preparing to strike.
"-Please forgive me for my lack of manners." He swiftly moved his hand towards the back of her neck, aiming to knock her out. However, she too, was swift and was able to evade to the side in the nick of time.
"That was close, you almost got me-" Before she could finish her sentence, All Might shot forward towards her aiming a fist to her center of mass.
She managed to dodge it just in time by backfliping out of his range.
"Don't you know it's rude to interrupt a lady while she is talking? Perhaps Japan isn't as polite as I assumed."
"Considering all the people you have killed, I wouldn't regard you as a simple lady. Besides, it wouldn't do well for Japan's reputation if its number one hero was sexist."
This time, it was Elsa who moved first. She broke into a run around All Might, looking for holes in his defense. Her speed was faster than Subaru had ever seen before.
His face grimaced 'Don't tell me, up until now she has been holding back?!'
Elsa aimed for All Might's neck, he was able to easily block the swift attack by raising his fist. The knife deflected off it, creating sparks, and a clang was heard. Elsa jumped back before attempting another strike aimed at All Might's abdomen.
Once again her knife was deflected and a small chunk of it splattered off as hot sparks.
Over the next seconds, Elsa tried over a dozen similar attacks, until her knife shattered completely on All Might's fist.
"Satisfied now, Bowel Hunter? I'll give you the chance to surrender again now that your weapon is gone. If you refuse I can't promise I'll hold back."
"Amazing, even when holding back you are just as good as your reputation would entail." Elsa smiled widely. "The Bowel Hunter could never surrender against such amazing prey."
She charged All Might again. Just before reaching him, she pulled two new kukri knives from under her dark clothes.
In a feat of inhuman strength and speed, The number one hero caught both knives in his fingers. They then shattered into little pieces when he applied pressure to them.
Before Elsa could have the chance to jump back. Faster than the speed of sound, All Might's fist hit her straight in the solar plexus.
Elsa was sent flying into the wall of an abandoned house. Her speed was great enough for the wall to shatter on impact. A dust cloud engulfed the house, leaving her fate unclear.
However, before the dust could settle, Elsa casually walked out of the rubble, seemingly unharmed, and noticeably missing her dark cloak.
"Ahhh~ What a hit, I would be done for if I hadn't prepared accordingly."
Elsa pulled out two new knives.
"Now, shall we resume our dance?"
"It's obvious you are outmatched, pride alone won't be enough to win, villain."
"Oh my, I'll admit you got me good, but I think I might have been underestimated."
Elsa blurs forwards, somehow, moving even faster than before.
She attacks and All Might dodges her hit, however, her second knife glances All Might's abdomen, causing superficial damage. Even so, the 'hit' caused All Might to fumble his counter-attack and Elsa managed just barely to dodge his supersonic fist.
The energy from the missed strike shot forward toward the park's unkempt bushes. The gust of wind was strong enough to unroot them all and shatter every piece of glass in that general direction. Truly, usually, All Might would try to minimize collateral damage. However, this time such a thing wasn't an option.
Elsa swung her knives again, this time, All Might intercepted her arms and used them to swing her towards the ground. Her body hitting the dirt caused a human-shaped crater to form there.
All Might grabbed Elsa's hands and faced Emilia. Throughout this entire ordeal. His signature smile never left his face.
"Well then, this villain is dealt with. I have to take her to the police before she wakes up. But before then, I have time for an autograph."
Emilia was surprised at this sudden attention and at how quickly the fight ended.
"Wow! That was reaaally superb! I knew you were strong but you still surprised me. And, Ummm, I would like an autograph, …please."
"Who even says superb anymore…" Subaru muttered in the background. However, All Might's power didn't surprise him. This wasn't the first 'All Might fight' he witnessed.
Emilia fumbled to try to find something for All Might to write on, on her person. She panicked when she realized she didn't have anything like that.
However, this time Subaru would be the hero to come to her rescue.
"Hey Emilia, need a hand?" He offered a piece of his tracksuit that happened to be torn off when battling Elsa earlier.
"Ahh! Thank you very much, Subaru! Um, I don't have any way to repay you so far now just please accept my thanks." She spoke quickly and faced the number one hero. "Um, I know it's unusual but if you can write it here…" Emilia said after handing All Might the piece of cloth. However, before she could finish her sentence, All Might already finished drawing and writing his signature autograph and gave the cloth back to her.
"Wow! So hasty!" She gasped at the speed of the procedure.
"Ha ha ha! I wouldn't be the number one hero if I couldn't write an autograph quickly." He then paused his cheerful tone.
"Now then, the Bowel Hunter mentioned earlier she was paid to target you. So then, I ask that you wait for me here until after I hand this villain over. Of course, you aren't in any legal trouble young lady. However, I will have to escort you to a police station for questioning in regards to this event." He then looks at Subaru. "And that goes for you two, young Subaru."
"He's right Lia, It's best if we aid in the police's investigation."
"Of course, I'll be a good girl and wait here," Emilia replied.
"I'll do my best to answer any questions to help protect Emilia-tan," Subaru added.
All Might prepared to jump, he buckled his knees and made sure he was holding onto Elsa's hands tightly. And so, with a swift motion that created a strong wind current. All Might flew into the air. However, there was one problem. All Might wasn't holding Elsa anymore.
When he jumped, the seemingly unconscious bowel hunter dug her shoes into the concrete. The result was her All Might rocketing away, with her hands in tow. However, the rest of her was still on the ground. Standing right in front of her assassination target.
By this point, there was no smile on Elsa's face as she lunged at Emilia. Her hands were ripped off, however. She was her regeneration to partly heal them. In the place of her hands, she grew two sharp bones.
Both Puck and Emilia were caught off guard by this sudden attack. Still, Emilia's life wouldn't end here, because-
*Smack*
With speed, power, and precision that he didn't know he had. Subaru knocked Elsa's attack to the side by punching her cheek.
It seemed the attack did damage as Elsa stumbled a bit after it long enough for Puck and Emilia to prepare an icey defense. Then All Might landed right in front of her as if he hadn't just flown into the sky 5 seconds ago. A moment after landed, a loud clap was heard. The implication was that All Might clapped his hands to propel himself back towards the ground. And that the sound of that clap traveled slower than All Might did.
Elsa grew back her hands and avoided a powerful fist from him. She jumped up and used the branch of an overgrown tree to propel herself onto the roof of a building.
"This has gotten quite problematic. It seems I can't do much with All Might here. So then, keep your bowels safe for me until next time."
Elsa said before jumping away deeper into the run-down part of the city. All Might would have chased after her if he didn't have to protect two teens right now.
Subaru breathed a sigh of relief. "It's finally over."
"I wouldn't be so complacent, she is being paid to kill the girl." He said, looking at Emilia "She will need hero supervision at least until it is discovered who is targeting her."
"I agree with him Lia, I can't protect you all the time *yawn* And besides, that fight made me really tired."
"I understand Puck, you did well, good night."
Puck disappeared by slowly becoming translucent.
"Is that cat your quirk, young lady?"
"Well… not exactly, It's more that he has a quirk."
"So he just disappears like that when he is tired? It's almost like Puck has multiple quirks." Subaru added his thoughts. If he caught the twitch in All Might's eyebrow, he didn't show it.
All Might was about to open his mouth to talk, however, he instead twitched as if in pain. Without warning them, he grabbed hold of Subaru's and Emilia's waists.
"Forgive me for this sudden flight, but I am on a time crunch right now."
"Huh? What are you- WAAAHHH!" Subaru's words were caught off by the sudden acceleration as All Might jumped with them two in his hands.
After a brief, yet unforgettable 20 seconds in the air. He landed in front of a police station and let them two down. The symbol of peace briefly explained the situation to the station's receptionist. After finishing that, he quickly jumped off into the sky. No one noticed that the dust kicked off from his jump was actually steam.
"My name is Tanaka Keiko. Please tell me your names as well." A woman with two sets of eyes dressed in a police uniform said.
"I'm Natsuki Subaru!" He proudly proclaimed
"My name's Emilia… I don't have a family name."
The officer raised two eyebrows on one side of her face.
"I see, in that case, is it safe to assume that you live in Dromandukasu then?"
"That's right, I live there together… with my cat," Emilia replied.
"Huh?! Emilia-tan lives there? And, is Emilia-tan an orphan?" Emilia's silence at the question confirmed it.
"Emilia-san, when did you first meet Natsuki-san?"
"Ehh, I suppose it was only around 30 minutes ago, give or take," Emilia replied to Kekio's question. And then she continued. "He chased me around like a 'stalker'. And when he caught up to me, he warned me of the assassin coming to kill me."
"So then, Natsuki-san. How did you know that the bowel hunter was coming after her?"
"Ahh, I guess saw it with my quirk," Subaru replied, he didn't sound sure and Keiko caught on to that.
"Your quirk? I read your file, and you are listed there as quirkless. Considering who your father is a false diagnosis is unlikely."
Emilia caught on to the word 'file'.
"So you have a file with the police, Subaru. Are you a naughty boy?"
"Ah! It's not what you are thinking, I only did a few pranks when I was younger. I swear!"
"Well, if you promise…" Emilia chose to let it go while Subaru was mumbling to himself about how no one uses the word 'naughty' nowadays.
"So then, if you have a quirk Natsuki-san, please explain what it is."
"Well, I only discovered this quirk today."
"It's a very specific quirk then?" Keiko noticed with her quirked set of eyes that Subaru was growing nervous.
"The way it works is that when I d-." Before Subaru could finish his sentence, time came to a standstill. Nothing moved including his own body. All physical sensations disappeared due to the stoppage of time, and yet. He was acutely aware of the shadowy hand that made its way inside his chest, it clutched his heart for a few seconds. (Not that time meant much at that moment.) And then, the hand disappeared and time resumed.
Subaru put a hand on his chest where his heart was. The pain was gone but his rapid breathing and contorted face signified that the fear carried over. Keiko didn't need her quirk to know what Subaru was feeling.
"Subaru, are you alright?!" Emilia was concerned for his health.
"I'm all fine Emilia-tan!" Subaru quickly put a fake grin on his face.
"Seriously! I just remembered the fight with Elsa. She is seriously scary you know!"
To Keiko, the whole situation looked weird. Her second set of eyes were able to perceive the emotions of others. And yet, throughout all her life. She had never seen someone's emotions simply jump from normal nervousness to pure terror.
'I must have blinked, but even then it would have been too quick.' were her thoughts.
"Ahem," Keiko brought their attention back to her. "Natsuki-san, if asking about your quirk brought back, unfortunate memories I apologize."
"It's all fine, seriously!"
"Thank you for accepting my apology. Would you please continue the explanation of your quirk?"
'That hand… I get the feeling I can't exactly talk about my ability to others. For a limit or handicap this one sure seems strange.' Subaru thought.
"About that… I actually have no idea what it is, Sorry!" Subaru dramatically bowed his head to apologize.
"Yet you still somehow knew that Elsa would attack?" Keiko looked suspicious.
His nervousness was higher than it was when he almost explained it before.
'A common sign of lying.' Keiko thought. Normally she would question him further.
However, considering who his father was, she thought it would be more trouble than it was worth.
"...I see, I'm done questioning you, Natsuki-san. Unless there is something you would like to add to the investigation?"
"Nope! I'm just as clueless as you are!" Subaru said with a smile while puffing out his chest.
Emilia giggled and Keiko gave him a deadpan look. It seemed not everyone could get the trademark Natsuki sense of humor.
After Subaru left the questioning room, Emilia remained there for another hour before leaving herself, she found Subaru waiting for her on a bench.
"Emilia-tan is finally back!" Subaru smiled at her.
"What did she ask you while I was gone?"
"Wellll, she asked a ton of stuff… She mostly asked if I was involved in many kinds of crime." Emilia looked sad. After all, she was used to people viewing her with suspicion.
"What?! How dare she talk to you like that! I will give that woman a piece of my mind.'
Subaru got up but Emilia blocked his way.
"It's really no bother, Subaru! I mean, it's expected she will ask things like that. You know, considering someone was after my life. Maybe she thought I am in a gang or something."
Subaru put his face in his hands. "No way… My cute Emilia-tan could never be breaking bad!" Emilia giggled at his reaction and his specific choice of words. (though they were accidental.) Then she realized she was called cute and her ears reddened.
"Geeeez Subaru, I-I'm not cute." Her face gained a shade of red when she realized she was also called 'My cute Emilia-tan.' Now it was her that was hiding her face in her hands.
"You i-idiot donkey, Subaru!" she spoke her insincere words.
"Wahghbogaboh!" Subaru made a strange sound while contorting dramatically.
"Emilia-tan called me a donkey. I might die now…"
"E-enough joking around." Emilia's expression turned serious though she was still blushing. "While I was being questioned, Keiko got a phone call and said I should go with you to the front of the police station."
"Huh? Did she say why?"
"Ahh- no."
"Well, I don't see why not. Also, All Might mentioned you will need to be protected until they find out why Elsa was after you. Maybe It's about that."
"Say, Subaru"
"Hm?"
"From the way you both spoke, It's obvious you and All Might are familiar with each other. Might I inquire why?" Emilia asked.
"Oh, that!" Subaru looked proud as he and Emilia walked to the front of the police station. "Well you see, It's because…"
"Subaru! Have you gotten yourself a girlfriend already without telling me?!"
The newly arrived Pro-Hero got Subaru in a headlock and ruffled his hair.
And for a moment, tears of joy appeared in his eyes.
"I'm so proud of you, my son!"
Emilia needed no further explanation, Natsuki Kenichi or the Can Do Hero is almost as famous as All Might himself despite being at the number 4 spot. It was well-known he and All Might were friends, so it would make sense his son would also know the number one Hero.
The situation was incredible for Emilia, not only did she meet All Might, But she also got to meet The Can Do Hero (The name was a mouthful and sounded suspiciously similar to that of All Might now that she thought about it.)
"Geez Dad, you don't have to embarrass me in front of Emilia-tan…"
"Normally, it would be my duty as a dad to embarrass my son in front of people he knows. However!" Kenchi released Subaru. "In this case you are right!"
"After all, It would be pointless to embarrass you in front of your future adopted sister!"
Kenichi had the most innocent smile in the world. As did Naoko who was standing close by but was 'undetected' to due her less glamorous nature.
