Trapped inside his own mind, the soul stone searched for hundreds of Loki's bad memories throughout the several centuries worth of life's experiences he had. Sometimes they seemed crueler than he initially remembered, but it was all the same to him in that moment. Over and over again his mind seemed to find the most negative memories, especially with Thor specifically, and showcased them for him once again.
On the ship, Proxima Midnight stood over him with Thanos. "What are you doing to him?" she asked, "Why does it look like he's getting angrier?" She watched as Loki sat against the wall, the orange covering his body only engulfing him more the longer he sat.
"The soul stone is reaching into the darkest depths of his soul," Thanos answered, "I knew he'd be of use to me. With him on my side, I'll limit my casulties while watching his brother's heart ache as he begs me to spare his life."
"You're sure you're well enough for this task, Heimdall?" Thor asked him in the field in Norway away from his people, "You're up for this?"
Heimdall nodded, "Anything for my king, and to stop that monster from winning. Are you prepared?" He nodded in return.
Heimdall summoned the last of his dark magic strength he had in order to create a rainbrow bridge all the way to Nidavellir across the galaxy. As he created it for himself and Thor, an obstacle suddenly came across their path. Unavoidable. He couldn't twist around it and they were only halfway to the star.
Inside the bridge, they crashed directly into an orange spaceship, knocking everyone off course. The rainbow covered it in colors and light before fading into the blackness of space.
"What the hell was that?!" Quill asked as he covered his eyes from the light.
"Oo," Mantis said, "pretty." Her eyes lit up at the different colors.
Rocket looked down at his controls and examined the camera. He said, "Someone's outside."
"What do you mean outside?" Gamora asked, "We're in space." She turned and saw the screen where two men were clinging to the outside of their ship. She leapt out of her chair. "Get them both in here!"
Once Heimdall and Thor were inside, they collected themselves carefully. Heimdall adjusted his sword and said, "Apologies, I never meant to crash us into your ship."
"Where did all that light come from?" Quill asked, "How did you get out there?"
"Who are you people?" Rocket asked.
Thor looked around the inside of the vessel and said, "I have no intention of being curt, however we cannot stay. We must continute on to Nidavellir."
Quill asked, "Nada-nade-what? Where? What did you just say?"
"Nidavellir?" Rocket asked, stepping in front of everyone and onto the table, "That place is real?! I always thought it was just a myth! It's legendary for making the most insane and powerful weapons in all of the galaxy! No way!"
Thor said, "We're taking your escape pod."
"Thor, it will serve us well to be more gracious to these people," Heimdall said, then turned to the guardians and added, "thank you for allowing us to use your escape pod."
"No!" Quill said, putting his arms up and stepping between them, "I don't think so! We're not allowing you to take anything! We need some sort of explanation first on what the hell is going on with you two! Who are you people? What were you doing traveling through space inside a giant rainbow light? Hello! Start talking!"
Drax added, "And why are you dressed like that?" Pointing to Thor, "Like a pirate had a baby with an angel."
"I don't care about that," Quill exclaimed, shaking his head at him, "just answer my questions, not his."
"I am Thor Odinson," he explained, pushing buttons on the escape pod to open it up, "God of Thunder, ruler of Asgard, and I need to get to Nidavellir to make a new weapon in order to defeat Thanos. Keep our path unheaded, and I can assure you that you will fair well."
"I am Heimdall," he said, "God of all-seeing and the protector of the bifrost. That rainbow light you just witnessed was my power to allow us to travel throughout the galaxy."
Mantis asked, "You know Thanos too?"
Thor finally stopped what he was doing and looked the group over carefully, wondering if he somehow stepped into a trap. "Yes," he said hesitantly, "How do you know of Thanos?"
"My girlfriend Gamora is his step-daughter," Quill answered, "he showed up not too long ago, beat all our asses, took her, and left with barely any notice, let alone an explanation. We have no idea where she is or what he's doing to her now. What about you? How do you know Thanos?"
"I don't know him personally," he confessed, "I only know he's holding my brother hostage on his ship as we speak, and I know he's headed to Earth to collect the remaining infinity stones. If I'm not there with a new weapon in time to kill him, he'll have his way with it, and will likely kill my brother and the avengers in the process of halving all life in the universe. Hence my need to make haste."
Rocket said, "It sounds like we're in the same business of wanting to kill this Thanos guy."
Drax asked, "Who are the avengers?"
"Earth's mightest heros," he answered, "a bunch of superheros who stand together in the face of evil. That sort of thing."
Mantis asked excitedly, "Like Kevin Bacon?"
"I don't know," Thor said, "he could be on the team now. It's been awhile since I've helped them out."
Quill asked, "Do either one of you have any idea where Gamora is?"
"I do not," Heimdall answered.
"Never heard of her," Thor said, "but she's likely a hostage on Thanos' ship as well." He sighed, thinking of his brother's predicament. He turned to Heimdall and asked, "And what of Loki?"
"He lives," he answered.
"What if we take you to this Nida-place," Quill proposed, "whatever you said, and we all get our own Thanos killing weapons? Then we'd maximize our odds on killing Thanos and probably find Gamora."
Thor answered, "You could never wield a weapon made from Nidavellir. Simply holding it would make you dizzy and drive your mind into madness you'd never recover from, and then eventually die a horrific death."
"Oh, I want one even more now," Rocket replied.
Quill gave him a funny look, then turned to Thor again and asked, "What if we took you two there to get you guys a weapon, and then we can learn about this Thanos guy and his big evil plans along the way?" Thor paused from grabbing their food out of their fridge. "That way you don't have to steal our stuff."
Heimdall looked at Thor. Thor answered, "Very well. I concur that is in all of our best interests."
T'Challa asked, "And there is no way for us to destroy any of these infinity stones so this Thanos cannot get his hands on the final ones?" He turned to everyone else standing beside him inside the palace of Wakanda. They all stood around his table used for planning battles.
"It's impossible," Dr. Strange answered, "each one of these stones controls a facit of existence, destroy one and that part of our existence gets destroyed too. We'd all die and what we're doing here will be deemed pointless."
After a moment of silence to understand the ramifications, Tony said, "The only thing we can do is prepare to fight this guy and his armies." He looked around the room.
Steve, Natasha, Clint, Bruce, Dr. Strange, T'Challa, Wanda, Vision, Sam, Bucky, Rhodes, Shuri, Peter Parker, Okoye, M'Baku, all stood in silence, knowing the battle of their lives was coming, and if they weren't prepared, it would be all over for them and everyone they knew.
"Then we will prepare accordingly," T'Challa said, "evacuate the city, prepare the rhinos for war, and get this man a shield." He commanded his servants accordingly.
As they moved out, Clint asked, "Where do we begin?"
"The shield around the city should protect us," T'Challa explained, "it would be best if we keep our air support within it as well, and only move out of it when we are all out of options."
Thor turned to Heimdall in the farthest back two seats of the Milano bridge and asked, "And what of Loki?"
"Dude," Quill interjected, annoyed, "that's got to be the 100th time you've asked that since we started moving." He paused. "I know he's your brother and everything, but because he was still alive the first 99 times you asked that, he's probably still alive now. Yeah? Am I right? God of 'seeing' or whatever you called yourself. Am I?" He turned around in his chair.
Heimdall ignored him and answered Thor calmly, "He lives."
Thor faced Peter Quill piloting the ship and said, "Within the last three days, I've learned my brother who I previously thought dead, was still alive, masquerading as my father. I found my father again, only to witness his death. There I learned I had a sister who had been exiled. When she found me she proceeded to break my weapon, kill all my friends and a good portion of my people, and then I had to watch the only home I've ever known get blown to bits just to kill her. Only then for this mad Titan to show up out nowhere because my brother pissed him off and decided he wanted to play with an infinity stone. Do not test me, mortal."
"Yeah well I just lost my girlfriend to that same mad Titan," Quill said, "I want him dead too, alright? We're all in a terrible mood."
"Quill," Rocket said, "dude, did you just hear what the God-man said? What he just went through doesn't compare to us losing Gamora. We'll find her again no matter what this Thanos guy did to her. God-man here can't get his people back, or his home, or his friends, or anything else he just said."
Quill said, "I heard him!" He paused. "You should know I'm only half mortal."
"You have celestial blood in your veins," Heimdall said, "yet you have no access to it's power. The light within your home planet must have died."
"My father was a celestial," he answered, "I had to kill him, or else he was going to take over the universe."
Thor looked down and said, "Families are often complicated."
"Thanos killed my family," Drax said, "I will make sure he doesn't get the chance to kill anyone else's."
Thor patted him on the shoulder in solidarity.
"If you're going to kill Thanos," Rocket said, "you're going to need more than one eyeball." He brought one out and gifted it to Thor from his chair.
"An eye?" Heimdall asked.
"I stole it off a guy when I was in Contraxia," he added, "I would wash it first if I were you." He watched as Thor dropped it into his eye and knocked it around, making it center so he could see normally.
Heimdall stood up and looked out the front window of the ship. "We have arrived," he said, "but the visuals are wrong."
"Whoa," Mantis said, marveling at it, "it's so dark."
"I don't see any stars," Drax said.
"I am Groot," he said, barely looking up from his video game.
"This is all wrong, stay steadfast," Thor said as he gazed at the dead star with two working eyes.
They landed the Milano on the rings of the star and stepped out, having no idea what to expect. The center of the star was dark, cold, and frosted over from lack of heat. As they stepped out into the darkness, Thor asked, "Where is everyone?"
"Only one remains," Heimdall said, leading the way to Eitri.
Quill looked around at the darkness and dirtiness of the scenery and said, "I thought you said this was an entire planet with hundreds of dwarves on it?" He readied his guns, expecting the unexpected.
As they walked through the dead star, Eitri, a 10 foot tall dwarf, ran out and attacked them, knocking them around like bowling pins. "Eitri!" Heimdal shouted, running out of the way, "Eitri it is us, Heimdal and Thor Odinson!"
"Eitri!" Thor exclaimed, "It's okay! We're not here to harm you! What happened here?"
"Prince Thor?" he asked, finally calming down and staring at everyone he flew around. He took a deep breath. "Where were you!? Where were the Asgardians when the mad Titan came and killed off all my people?!"
Thor asked, "Thanos arrived here as well?" He looked over at a table and saw the mold for a massive gauntlet.
Eitri sat down, defeated. "He tore through here and demanded I make him a gauntlet powerful enough to hold all six infinity stones. It was such a terrifying thought, a single being in possession of so much power, but I thought he would spare us if I crafted it for him." He sunk his head in shame. "After I did, he killed everyone and then cut off my hands, claiming my hands belonged to him, and I'd never make another weapon again."
Mantis said, "That's so sad."
Rocket noted, "Looks like you're not getting that weapon, big guy."
Meanwhile Thor and Heimdall looked at each other and thought the same thing at the same time. Thor said, "Loki."
"What of him?" Eitri asked, "Cut off another maiden's hair, did he?" He looked around, expecting him to jump out from behind a corner or some debri.
"He committed to something much more sinister this time," Thor said, "he faked his death, masquarated as Odin, neglected the nine realms, and kept Heimdall away from his post with false claims of treason so he did not see this massacure." He stopped and turned to Heimdall and said, "Remind me to scold him for that later."
"Aye."
Thor turned back to Eitri and said, "The way you build your weapons is not in your hands, Eitri, it's in your head. Thanos or anyone else could never take that away from you."
"It's been done," Eitri said, "the star is dead."
Heimdall suggested, "If we get the rings moving again and break apart the ice we could reactivate the star."
"It would take a tremendous amount of strength," he said.
Quill pointed out, "These rings are absolutely massive. There's no way we're going to get them moving."
"Heimdall," Thor said, "I need a rope, a long one. The rest of you, get back inside the Milano and wait for me to tell you when to put the engines in full throttle."
Heimdall conjured a rope large enough for Thor to get a good grasp on it, and long enough to carry momentum.
"I don't think so-" Quill started.
"Quill get in the ship," Rocket said, "I want to see the Gods in action. Hurry! Move it! You too Groot, you'll just get in the way down here." He stopped and stared at him still playing the game. "Would you stop playing that thing already?"
As they walked away, he said, "I am Groot."
"I don't care if it's entertaining," Rocket said, "you've been playing it for 5 hours straight! Set it down and give your eyes a rest already."
Thor turned back to king Dwarf, "In order to kill Thanos I need something that'll pierce Titan skin."
"Uru metal sharpened into an axe should do the trick," Eitri said, "it'll cut through everything, including Thanos. I have a mold over here."
Eitri set up the mold, and Thor tied the end of the rope to the Milano. The guardians braced themselves for dear life as Thor grabbed the rope and spun the entire ship around. He launched them across the star and held onto a ring.
"Full power!" he shouted.
"Whoa!" Quill shouted from the pilot's seat, "Hot damn!" He put the engines to full throttle and watched as the rings slowly began to break free.
Heimdall leapt up with his sword and attacked the center of the star that was still frozen over. With his blade and his strength the ice slowly broke apart. Thor managed to move one of the rings, causing the others to move, and the ice to shatter, reactivating the star to it's former glory.
Rocket shouted, "Oh hell yeah! That was awesome!"
Just as they were finished celebrating the reawakening of the star, the eye clamped shut and the light went out. The metal wasn't melting.
"What happened to the light?" Mantis asked.
Drax asked, "What are the God-men going to do now?"
"The eye shut," Eitri said to Thor and Heimdall, "it must remain fully open to melt the metal."
Thor said, "If I stand inside of it and force it open it should work."
"Don't do it," Eitri warned, "it's suicide. You would have have to take the full brunt of the star's power for several minutes!"
"He speaks the truth, Thor," Heimdall said, stepping in front of him, "most don't get to choose how they die. Aren't I lucky?" He jumped back up to the eye.
Thor leapt up after him, "No! I won't watch another one of my people die! Certainly not in the name of Thanos. If we must hold open the eye, we'll do it together." The two of them stepped up to the eye of the star and saw they both fit perfectly.
From inside the spaceship, Quill asked, "What the hell are they doing?"
"If they die doing this who's going to wield the weapon?" Rocket asked, "I volunteer myself. You guys get that? No one touches that thing other than me." He saw everyone staring at him in disgust. "Only if they die."
Together, Heimdall and Thor stood inside the eye and took on the power of Nidavellir's star. It took everything they had to keep it open long enough for all the metal to be melted. They both collapsed after a few minutes and needed to be caught by the spaceship so they wouldn't hit the ground.
"Oh no!" Mantis exclaimed, touching their arms, "They aren't dead but they're injured!"
"Uh, you think they can get normal first aid?" Quill asked, "This doesn't look good."
"I need the handle!" Eitri exclaimed, running around to the side, "Then the axe will be complete!"
Heimdall opened his eyes and slowly sat up. He watched as Groot ran up and created a handle for Thor's brand new axe. Thor used his lightning to force the new axe into his hand and bring himself new life.
"Eitri," Heimdall said, rising to his feet, "thank you." He turned to the guardians. "We must make haste to Earth, Thanos arrives."
"What of Loki?" Thor asked.
"He lives," he answered.
