AN: Hello Everybody. So this isn't really a continuation as some of you may be hoping for. This story has proven to be popular for the one shot March so as I finish up FF for 2023 I decided to release the second chapter that me and Dmandog056 put together. I'd like to finish more chapters before making this into a full fledge story one day as it has been a lot of fun to write. In any case please do enjoy the story.
Chapter 2. A Fool's game.
The view remains black for a few moments. No lights or sounds can be heard. A black void where nothing can enter or escape. After a few moments a small tan light appeared and a voice broke the silence. Some womens voice spoke out. It was strangely familiar. As the voice echoes in this dark void, the tan light grew bigger and bigger till eventually blinding the view. "For it is in passing that we achieve immortality. Through this, we become a paragon of virtue and glory to rise above all. Infinite in distance and unbound by death, I release your soul, and by my shoulder, protect thee."
Suddenly the light dims, and the view reveals the ceiling overlooking the inside of some room. Blinking a few times, it is revealed to be Jack, sitting on a bed. He had been stripped down to his pants with multiple bandages wrapped around his face. He stared there for a few moments, blinking before it slowly came back to him. With a weak hiss he muttered the kids name, "R-Ruby…" before trying to get up. He struggled to even lean as thirst hits the back of his throat. Eventually, his clamoring got the attention of somebody downstairs. A short lady came up holding a tray of flowers and bandages when she spotted Jack.
"Oh, hey your awake." She said with a faint smile before seeing him trying to get out of bed. "Hey, Mr. Don't do that. Your stitches will tear."
She quickly dropped everything and raced over to him. Before he could fall over, he landed in her arms, repeatedly murmuring the child's name in a dry voice, "R-Ruby… got to…"
"Mr. the kid, the one you saved. She's fine. But you won't do much for her if you bleed out internally." The woman scolded as she sat Jack back down on the bed. "Listen is there anything I can get for you? Water, food, anything?"
"Water would help." Jack grunted. While it was the last thing he wanted, he couldn't disagree with the girl standing in front of him. He'd find Ruby soon enough, but for now it was best to play along with whoever was helping him. "But where the hell is the kid?" He demanded coldly. The promise he made to Summer echoed in the back of his head like the tolling of a church bell.
Narrowing his eyes, the outlaw glanced around the room to get a feel for his accommodations. Not to mention he needed to find his gear, especially his father's old hats. Aside from the soft bed he was laying in, the room had a grey shag carpet and brown painted walls. Near his bed was a stool and a night stand with an old lamp that sat upon it. On the nightstand there was a small wind up clock that was quietly ticking as the time in this room dragged on.
"Damn it this shit hurts." Jack grunted again, visibly irked by the new wounds that hadn't healed yet. Dealing with pain wasn't new for him, laying in a bed to heal was a different story though since he preferred to be on the move. Arthur and his father did the same, Jack assumed they'd probably be shaking their heads at him for stepping into a fine mess of shit. Getting back on the horse was always difficult after it bucks off the rider.
He reached a hand over one his wounds, favoring the bandaged area he gently strokes it before letting out a grunt of pain as he twisted in the sheets. Unpleasant was the word on his mind when it came to the pain from the newest scars that adorned his body. Tearing the stitches definitely seemed like a bad idea to him now that he was able to feel the pain set in. Just sitting around wouldn't help Ruby though, he had to get his ass out of that bed for her sake if not his own.
The woman however just pushed him back down. Firmly making sure he ain't going nowhere. Once she was sure Jack wouldn't get up, she pulled a glass and pitcher of water out of thin air. "Well, the kid is downstairs napping Mr. Like I said, she's alright. A bit hesitant and worrying about you, but otherwise fine."
As she pours the water, Jack finally got a good look at the girl. She couldn't be any older than him. Maybe even the same age. However, there were some… interesting features about her. For one, her hair was white like cotton, yet she was no Albino. A strange set of lime green eyes. And then the ears. They were… sheep ears. Legit sheep ears. He must have been staring for a while because she noticed how he was staring.
After filling up the glass she remarked in a semi timid tone. "Would you stop staring. It's not like I get that enough in school as is."
"… Sorry, didn't mean to be… rude." Jack struggled to remark as he quickly takes a sip from glass with haste, hoping to quench his thirst. After downing the whole glass, he could speak properly. His first question was. "Um, where am I Ma'am?"
"You're in our home, that's where you are mister." The sheep girl told him in a snarky tone. She frowned at the outlaw as she looked him straight the eyes, feeling a bit brave or perhaps annoyed by the stubborn outlaw. From Jack could tell, she was looking him over to gauge his behavior like she didn't trust him. To an extent he could respect that attitude since he was getting some medical care for his injuries.
"Where exactly though? I'm grateful for fixing up my wounds but it'd help to know what's going on." Jack asked calmly. He toned down his gruff attitude so that he might get some info about his location, talking was his best option to learn anything until he could get on his feet. "That ain't wrong to ask as far as I know."
"My team leader Robyn could tell you more, now that you're awake that is. I should probably go tell her." Said the sheep girl as she crossed her arms in front of her chest. Clearly, she wouldn't be so easy to rattle than Jack would be, she seemed timid when it came to her appearance but oddly stubborn when he ain't playing along with her role as doctor.
"Who the hell is Robyn?" Jack grunted in confusion.
"The one who pulled you from the snow!" A new voice answered from bellow. A few moments later another woman came up the stairs. She was dressed in a grey and white uniform. A grey one piece vest and skirt over a white button up shirt and tie. A pair of white pants were tucked into black boots. As for the woman she had a strange combination of light blond hair, Violet eyes, and a tan complexion.
She grabbed a chair from a desk before pulling up beside Jack. Sitting down across from him she eyed him up before remarking. "I'd heard from little Ruby that you risk life and limb for her. Got to ask, why you were out here in Anima cowpoke? Ain't you supposed to be in Vacuo or something?"
"Um… no ma'am… don't really know where that is actually." Jack replies having no idea where that is. Or where in the hell is Anima.
"Hmm… in any case, I'm Robyn. Robyn Hill. Huntress in training but I'll be graduating soon. And who are you and why are you traveling with this kid?" The woman confirmed to be Robyn asked as she held out her hand.
"Jack Marston, that's my name. Why I'm keeping an eye on the kid is personal and that's all you need to know." Jack grunted defensively at Robyn, he needed to keep his guard up even if they seemed decent. More often than not, folks in the wild lands of New Austin and Mexico had less than friendly intentions hidden behind generosity. He recalled his father's tales, when on an occasionally some idiot would try to steal his horse, just before he'd put a bullet in their back.
For now, Jack would have to play his cards carefully since he couldn't see his guns anywhere nearby. Without his pistol belt or even his knife at his side to fight with, it wouldn't be ideal to start trouble with the strangers until he was armed. He takes her hand believing it to be a handshake, however to his surprise she held it tight. Before he could even react, a strange light appeared over his and her hand. It was a Pale Lilac color, while it didn't hurt or anything the sight of this creeping up his hand shocked the young man.
"The hell!?" Jack snapped as he tried to pull back but found her grip to be stronger than his.
"Jack Marston, huh. Took you for Peaches or Hazel." Robyn said as she looked down at Jacks arm. "You sure it's Jack Marston?"
"Damnit lady yes. John Marston Jr. But people call me Jack, now let go!" Jack snapped as he struggled to get his and free. Robyn paid no attention to his words, but fixated on his arm. As the creeping color moved and shifted about, the color quickly turned to green and she let's go.
"Alright, sorry. If it's one thing that I hate it's a liar." Robyn said apologies for that performance.
"… wait… that… thing… it can tell when someone's lying?" Jack asked.
"Yes it's my semblance." Robyn stated.
"A what?" Jack asked with a perplex look on his face.
"A Semblance… what? Never heard about Semblance Cowboy?" Robyn asked.
"Um no… can't say that I have." Jack remarks completely confused and somewhat shocked by this womens ability. Then again, his pa always said woman had the ability to know when someone was lying. He had figured he was being metaphorical
"Is that so?" Robyn hummed to her guest.
"Yeah, never of heard of it before." Jack gritted his teeth; he couldn't lie to her now that he knew she had some kind of lie detection power.
"Are you gonna tell me?" Robyn stared at him.
"Not unless I have to." Jack retorted.
"Hmm, you sure." Robyn asked as she held out her hand with a smug smirk.
"... Yes... I'm positive." Jack said as he refused to take her hand.
"Alright, well if your hungry breakfast is downstairs. Joana is an amazing cook. Come down when you can walk again." Robyn said as she heads downstairs with Fiona following behind her.
Jack rolled his eye before falling back into his bed. As he looked up at the ceiling, he started to get annoyed by the sound of the ticking from that clock. He tried a few times to grab it but his special awareness with one eye got in the way. In a fit of anger, he sat up before grabbing the clock. He was about to toss it out when he noticed something. It wasn't a normal clock but a strange rectangle clock with a symbol made in lines. As he looked over it he begin to wonder if he went through a Rip Van Winkle like event.
"Am I going insane?" He muttered to himself as he sat alone in the room. Strange could hardly describe the world around him as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. What little he was learning so far of the world didn't line up with what he knew, there was no continent on earth called Anima and the people he'd just met made his suspicions even worse.
With a sigh Jack started to sit himself up, he had to be very careful not to pop his stitches or he'd risk bleeding like the sheep girl said he would. If God was paying him back for breaking his promise to his ma and seeking revenge, then he must be getting a good laugh at his expense somewhere. Slowly the young outlaw craned his legs over the edge of the bed so he could stand up. He felt slight tugging at the stitches but not enough for them to pop as he stood up.
"Ruby, ya down there?!" He hollered for the peppy little child as he made his way down. Soon enough as he came down the stairs, he spotted a young girl as he reached the bottoms of the stairs. She was in the middle of eating a plate of eggs and Bacon when she spotted him.
Mr. Marston!" She cried out as she got out of her seat and raced over to him. She wrapped her hands around his leg, nearly tackling him to the ground. "I thought you had died... or worst."
"Ugh. Um good to see you kid... but you mind letting go..." Jack replies in a slight tone of agony as Ruby refuse to let go of her leg.
"Come now you ankle biter. Best let go of your cowboy. By the gods he needs his strength. Little guy probably hadn't had a decent meal in awhile." A Black skinned yet strangely tall woman remarks as she placed an egg onto a plate of eggs.
Ruby complied and quickly brought Jack over to his seat. Jack sat down before he looked over the table. He was surrounded by four girls roughly his age. They all were dressed in the same uniform and enjoying a meal. Course before he could ask his stomach gurgled and his eyes turn before the food. Bacon and sunny side up eggs laid in the center. Without thinking he grabbed a few and begin eating.
As he ate the girls took interest in the young man. He was ruggedly handsome. Shame that Grimm tore at his face. As he stuffed his face, a blue haired girl soon questioned him. "So, what's your name cowboy?"
"Jack Marston, ma'am." He said coolly.
"Mr. Marston is so cool! When he shoots his pistol, he does it super-fast! Like pew-pew-pew-pew- pew!" Ruby made little finger guns as she pretended to shoot random spots.
"I appreciate your high opinion of me kid, but all I did was more running then shooting." Jack chuckled at Ruby's high praise.
"Well yeah, you saved me!" Ruby smiled.
Jack simply gave a small smile as he finished off his plate of eggs. As he does, he couldn't help but noticed the girls taking quite an interest in him. After a few moments the tall girl questioned him.
"So... we don't normally get a lot of cowboys up here. Where you from. Mr. Marston?" The Woman asked.
"Um, I'm from West Elizabeth, small ranch in Beechers Hope." Jack replies as he grabbed a few more pieces of egg and bacon."
"Huh never heard of it." A blue haired girl replies with a shrug. "Though I'm curious, what brings you this far north cowpoke?
Jack remained quiet for a few moments. The girls excluding Ruby looked at him with a cautious eye. Waiting for him to respond. After a few moments he remarked. "I was... delivering a message. Must have gotten lost."
"Must have been a real important message to take you this far north." The woman said with greater interest.
"It was… waited three years to deliver it when something, off… happened." Jack remarks before sipping a strange tasting orange juice.
"Hmm, what do you mean off?" The sheep eared girl asked.
"I can't rightly say. One moment I was about to deliver the message, next moment I was face down in the snow in the middle of nowhere." Jack answered honestly.
The girls looked at one another. Sure enough that was strange, course they didn't want to push it any further for now. After a few moments the realization that he didn't know these girls prompted the sheep girl to speak up.
"I'm Fiona, by the way. Fiona Thyme." The sheep girl known as Fiona introduced. She then turned to the others "The one across is Joanna Greenleaf, May Marigold, and our leader Robyn Hill. We are known as the Happy Huntress's."
"Happy Huntress's?" Jack asked with a raised brow.
"Well technical RMJF, but that name never really stuck." May explained.
"Huh, well the name is definitely optimistic." Jack remarks before taking a bite of his eggs.
Joanna gave a nod before noticing the time. "So, Jackie you going to be comfortable while were out attending school?"
"Just Jack Ms. Greenleaf. And sure, I have a few books in my things." Jack replies, gaining the attention of Fiona.
"Oh, another book reader." Fiona said with an ecstatic smile. "What's your favorit genre? I always loved romances but I got a soft spot for westerns."
"Um, fantasies like knights and wizards. Use to love Westerns but… well I lost favor and for good reason." Jack replies with a sadden look. The girls picked up on this and quick to change the conversation when Robyn noticed the clock.
"Oh, well look at the time. We should get going. Mind if you put away the dishes?" Robyn asked as she quickly stands up.
"Sure, least I can do for saving my life." Jack replies with a nod.
"Alright, guess we'll be leaving you two. Just don't burn down the house while were out." Robyn said sarcastically as she and her team members grabbed there school bags before leaving.
"Can't promise nothing but I'll try to." Jack replies earning a chuckle from her as she exits.
After the last of the four left, Jack return to his breakfast before grabbing the plates. He cleaned up the plates. He struggled back up the stairs but eventually made it back to his bed side. He retrieved a book on Camelot from his bag and picked up where he last left off. Thirty minutes pass when Ruby walked on up holding a bulky book.
"Excuse me, Mr. Marston?" Ruby shyly called out.
"Yeah?" Jack responds without taking an eye off his book.
"I was wondering, can you read me a story?" Ruby said as she held up the bulky book.
"Can't yah read?" Jack asked.
"… The words are too big for me… besides, mom use to read to me." Ruby remarks as she looked down with sadden eyes. Jack could see the tears slowly forming in her eyes. So with a sigh, Jack relented.
"Alright, just one story." Jack relented.
This caused Ruby's mood to boomerang around quickly with a cheerful yip of excitement, she quickly jumped onto his bed and shoved the book into his hands. As she bounced around much to Jack's pain, she at least remembered her manners before remarking, "Thank you."
"Ugh, your welcome… mind quit jumping like a jack rabbit out of hell. Can't read straight even without the injuries." Jack pleaded painfully. Ruby quickly stops and settles down next to Jack. Now having the chance he looked over the book, 'The Fairy Tales of Remnant, a collection of short stories' It seemed like any other fairy tale. He was familiar with them seeing a lot of those stories involved knights, so he open the book before asking. "Alright kid, which story do you want me to read?"
"Why don't you pick?" Ruby said having no preference for which one. Jack turned to the table of contents and overlooked the stories. He had to admit, these stories were nothing that he'd ever heard about. Still he looked through it before coming across one that caught his attention. 'The Girl Who Fell Through The World.' Admittedly he felt like Jules Verne characters since he woke up in this strange new world. So turning to the page he began to read.
"Once upon a time, there lived a maiden fair in beauty and cunning in wisdom. She had grown board of her decadence and never-ending number suiters. She craved above anything else, an adventure. Course her father would never allow her to leave. As the years pass by her beauty and cunning grew along her ever so desire for an adventure. One day while wearing a crown her parents bought for her, she wished for more than anything, to be anywhere but here. To be as far away as possible. Then suddenly, she vanished. Vanished as if she wasn't even there, it was as if the world had swollen her whole. Years go by, and nobody knew where the girl went. Her parents who had done everything they could to find her, exhausting nearly all their fortune in the vein hope of finding their young daughter. No matter where there hired help did nor how far they traveled, they could never find their daughter. One day a near on decade later, a woman appeared before them on their doorstep. She looked like any street urchin, but the moment the mother made contact with her eyes did she realize that this was her daughter. She was covered from head to toe in mud, her face horrible scared, and her eyes so tired. However, what proved her beyond a doubt that she was her daughter was the crown in hand. She was quickly bathed and was brought to a doctor. The realm rejoiced and the line of suiters appeared before her. However something clear was off about the once fair maiden. She had become bitter, more sorrow, and colder. She couldn't sleep right on her bed for weeks. Her favorit foods became too rich for her, and her once favorit hobbies have lost all favor. She never told anyone what had happened to her, only thing she ever told was that the place she found herself, had changed her. And not necessarily for the better." Jack read aloud noting the pictures of the fair maiden disappearing. He had finished the story much to Ruby's request, only to find that she had fallen asleep… right on his arm.
After struggling to move, he realizing she wasn't waking up any time soon. In fact he it seemed that his entire right hand is pinned by this little girl. Making it difficult to read. With a rhetorical comment he remarks with annoyance as the scene goes black, "Shit."
A week and half later, on the wall surrounding Mantle
The view re opens among the wall of Mantle. There Jack stood on the south wall surrounding Mantle. The injuries for the most part had healed. Least to the point he was no longer bed ridden. He looked on over at the long Plato of snow with a strange rifle in hand. An old wooden rifle relic from the great war. A simple white bolt action. While it is a cheap piece to most it was something Jack had experience using. A lot has changed since that day he awoke in the Happy Huntress home. First, he went out to find a job to pay for a trip down to vale, finding a job at maintenance work before saving enough to buy that bolt action to use in a security position. He became a reliable gun and earned a few more Lien than he'd ever make moving supplies. He'd much prefer using his own weapons, however he lost them in the grim attack. At the very least his nag of a hoarse was found. Poor thing nearly froze to death out in the wilds. Speaking of which, Jack took the time to learn about this strange world. About it's history, technology, and the Grimm that roam the land. Can't say he'd understand the lights and moving pictures on these flat screen boxes, but he learned about dust real quick. Seems this world doesn't use gun powder or it was simply never invented. Rather they use these crystals with profound effects. As he overlooked the bleak setting his thoughts was still on Ross. He wonders when will he get his next chance for revenge. His thoughts were interrupted by a call from bellow.
"Hey cowpoke! Your shift is up for the day!" Robyn called out from bellow.
"Already!" Jack called down to her. She gave a nod before heading up to him. Under his breath Jack muttered sarcastically. "Huh, and here I thought I could get another moment to myself."
Robyn had made her way up to him before leaning over the edge. Jack pulled out the last of the hand rolled cigarette when Robyn remarked. "Again, that stuff ain't good for you. Even outside my teams house I think it's best you drop that habit."
"Dually noted Ms. Hill. But all the same I don't really see a point to stopping." Jack retorts as he strikes the match before lighting his hand rolled cigarette. After taking a drag from the last of the Indian tobacco Robyne continuing on.
"So, I came by to tell yah that I found you and little Rose a ride to Vale. Guys a friend of mine, so he will give you a discount." Robyne informed.
"Huh, suppose that's good to hear. After today I will have enough even without that discount. Thank you, kindly Ms. Hill." Jack remarks with a tip of his father's hat.
"Yeah. Huh and here I thought I get to see behind those bandages before you leave." Robyne remarks joking as she points to the bandage that wrapped around Jacks right side. The doctor he'd been visiting said another day before he could remove them. Course it made shooting a bit harder with one eye, but he managed to do it.
"Tsk, suppose you're lucky. I'll be looking over this ugly face of mine for the rest of my days." Jack replies cynically.
"Ah, don't say that. If anything, it gives your face character. I mean how bad can a torn-up face make you." Robyne said in a cheery tone.
"Huh, clearly you haven't met my pa." Jack remarks before taking another drag. After exhaling he remarks, "Thanks, I couldn't have made it this far without y'all."
"Aw it was nothing cowboy. Someone got a guardian angel somewhere." Robyne said waving off the compliment.
"Would prefer hero. I found they ain't no such thing as angels and devils. Just folk surviving and morals tested." Jack remarks.
"Huh, that is some Vacou advice… you sure you ain't from around there?" Robyn asked. Only to earn a chuckle from Jack. Before he could comment the scroll on her hip begins to buzz. She reaches down before answering it. "Hello Fiona what's up… woah, woah… what do you mean a crash? Who's on board?"
Jack didn't quite understand how these scrolls act as telephones, as well as camaras but he understood the look of bad news. By the look of her face, it was severer. He was about to ask what's going on when a loud explosion caught his attention. He pulled out his binoculars and looked for it. It was a few miles away and the smoke from the explosion caught everyone's attention, including the Grim. Realizing that he quickly bolted from the wall and head towards the house. Leaving behind Robyne. She waited for her team by the HVB Rhino station. Upon arriving she found much to her dismay that all the HVB Rhino's were gone. Meaning they will need to take a snow car and getting one will take a lot longer. Just as she arrived the rest of her team arrived armed and ready, unaware of the problem.
"Where's the Rhino's?" May called out.
"There on loan for the job." Robyn explained before kicking the ground.
"Shit, Fiona by chance you have on in that back pocket of yours." Joanna asked hoping that her team member came prepared.
"Unfortunely no, looks like we are going to find a snow truck." Fiona said sadly.
"Damn it, that could take too long." May shouted in anger.
"Agree but we got to try. Maybe Jack could find us a truck." Fiona said hopefully.
"Doubt it, he couldn't drive a bike let alone stick." Joanna said flatly. Just then the clipping of hooves gain there attention. Jack's old hoarse raced by them without a second thought. They couldn't call out, except look onward as he rides off towards the crash site.
Jack rod on the back of his hoarse. Why he decided to help was beyond him, after all his 'shift' had ended. Even then he was only supposed to guard the entrance where that flying machine was to enter not go out and help the damn flying conductor land the damn thing. But if he had any good reason, he'd been in that sorry position before. Alone with no help, surrounded by those beasts. He was lucky that someone came to his rescue. Figure he'd return the favor. He rode as quick as he can before coming upon a crash Bullhead nearby. There he spots a number of Grimm the locals refer to as Sabyr. They'd look like those ancient cat's he'd read about in his youth, the ones with the large teeth. Some of the passengers were armed with a mismatch of civilian weapons, and some were professional or training huntress and hunters; but they couldn't hold out for long on their own. So with a whistle he rode on in, rifle in hand.
Down below, a few civilians fought alongside a set of Atlas students. They did there best but the Sabyr pack was too much even for these specialists in training. As they fought, one Sabyr pounced on the back of an elderly man. He screams out in agony as the Sabyr mangles his back with it's claws. The group of specialists tried to get to him, but the Sabyr tossed him to the side where two more snatched the old man. He was ripped in half before anyone could do a thing. The Sabyr who launched the man to his death easily evaded the swings of one of the specialists armed with a hammer. She swung her hammer about trying to hit the damn thing but it proved to be too agile. It then tricked her into straying to far from the group. By the time she had crushed the oversize cat's head in, did she realize she was surrounded by five of them.
They all pounced on her and tore into her aura. As she struggles to push them off, a friend with a falcon haircut, speeds on over and knocks a number of them off. She then raced around at supper speed, delivering quick blows as her comrades in arms begins pushing the group of Sabyr off her. However in saving her comrade, she left a spot wide open for a Sabyr to attack a mother and her babe. The speeding woman saw this and quickly raced on over, only to be tackled by another. The Sabyr moves up to the young mother and child and prepared to pounce. Those who were fighting could do nothing as it launches itself on them, yet the Grimm never laid a paw on them. Rather a rifle round punctured through it, sending it to the ground.
The mother looked up to see the most bizarre thing. A cowboy, on hoarse back riding towards them. He was a young lad. About the age of the specialist if not older. He quickly jumped off his hoarse and pushed his way through the roaming Sabyr's. Firing his rifle at a few Sabyr's. Not all shots hit their target, but he still killed a good bunch to allow for a better protection of the civilians. The Specialist in training quickly regained their stance and eventually killed those who stayed behind while the rest of Sabyr's ran away. With them gone the young specialist fell to their knees exhausted. As the two girls sat there trying to catch their breath, jack approached them as he quickly reloads his rifle.
"Hey, you two doing alright?" Jack as he closes the bolt.
"Yeah (Huff, Huff) Just peachy." The giant of woman said as she waved him off.
"Heh, yeah… hey since when did the Atlas army send cowboys to help a transport?" The falcon haired girl as wondering why a cowboy was doing so far from any Vacuo.
"Seeing how I'm the only one with a hoarse for miles. I'd say your lucky I got here quickly." Jack said dryly before looking at the group of passengers who were on the transport. As he looked about, he then questioned. "Is this everyone who made it?"
"No, an upper classman is currently helping those in the other half of the shuttle." The falcon girl answered… just before a sudden dust explosion happened not to far off from where the other half of the vehicle had crashed. "… um, I think she may need your assistance cowpoke."
"Yeah, recon so." Jack said as he was just about to race up the hill. But after a few steps he stopped before turning around and saying. "Oh, the Happy Huntress are on their way shortly."
"Oh… well least that's comforting." The falcon haired girls said before falling flat on her back. She then mumbled to herself. "Least this day can't get any stranger."
Jack didn't heard that part but quickly went over the hill to help the upperclassman. On the other side of the hill remained a single woman Standing by herself with a saber in hand. She is the only thing standing between the Sabyr and the civilians. All the other civilian soldiers were unfortunately ripped to shreds before the young woman's eyes. Yet she refused to yield. Exhaustion was overtaking her as she tightly held her weapon. The ten Sabyr circled around her like buzzards around a carcass. As the woman held herself, the Grimm could sense her weakness and soon moved to attack. The first lunged at her, and she quickly side stepped the creature before slashing the side. Another lunges and she ducked under the creature before lunging into the back. She killed the creature but left herself wide open, as a Sabyr pounces from behind. Before it could sail through the air, a gun shot went off and the Grimm fell dead behind her. She turns expecting reinforcements. What she got was a cowboy, sliding down to her.
Jack slid down on his back, firing off a few rounds as he went down the slope to the lone student. He was going a bit fast then intended, causing him to fly up on a small ice patch at the bottom. He ungracefully landed on his feet, but found his balance eventually. Once he got on his footing, he came face to face with a Sabyr who had charged him. Jack would have been tackled by the Grimm if not for the upperclassman pulling him aside.
"Get your head out of the clouds civilian!" The woman snapped as she quickly turn to deliver a devastating back hand slash. "Now ain't the time to play a Vacou Cowboy."
"I'd thank yah for saving my life Ms." Jack spoke before firing off a shot, hitting one Sabyr who got to close to the civilians. "But I ain't playing the part of a fool. Least one who doesn't know how to shoot."
"Tsk, very well citizen. Just don't do anything stupid, and we might just make it out alive." The upper student said as she twirls her blade about.
"Funny, was about to say the same thing Ma'am." Jack replied as he quickly loads his revolver.
Another Sabyr rushed towards the two of them and Jack was quick to fire several revolver shots in response. "At this rate I might as well keep score."
"This is not a game. For a moment I thought you were at the very least prefashionable enough too know when not to joke like a drunken fool Mr..." Before the woman could even finish her sentence, another Sabyr pounces and she quickly does a backflip over it before lunging into it's neck.
"Marston. And I'm just trying to stay alive, rounds aren't cheap!" Jack retorted as he reloaded and fanned another burst of shots.
"Then wouldn't it be more pragmatic to use something simple?" The woman said as she stares Jack down, while stabbing a Sabyr in-between the eyes. "It's not like the grim drops bullets, and trust me Atlas has tempted to make something of the sort to complete disaster."
"Simplest I got is a knife and rope ma'am. I don't do that fancy acrobatic stuff." Jack said as holsters a pistol and pulls out his rifle. With a quick aim and pull of the trigger, the rifle shot struck a sabyr in the eye.
"Tsk, I suppose one would find those necessary on a ranch out in Vacou but, out here... Still, unlike most dullards who play the role. Least you know your manners." The woman remarks before sliding under Jacks legs and slashing a Sabyr across the face
"My folks raised me well." Jack nodded as he crouched and fired several more perfect shots with his gun.
"Hmm, can't say the same about mine." The woman mused to herself before the sudden cry of a child caught her attention. Looking over she noticed one of the Sabyr got through and was about to kill a child. Quickly raising her blade to her cheek, a black circle with a snowflake emblem at the center appeared bellow her. Before a full second, she was launched forward in a lunge position, only for a Sabyr to pounce on her.
Jack reacted immediately and rapidly fired more shots at the Sabyr, hitting it enough to knock it off course. "I don't need you dying on me! You got that?!"
The Sabyr roars in pain, giving the upper classman enough time to stab the creature. she then grabbed something at the hilt, pulling a small dagger from her sword. She quickly twist the blade before tossing it at the one going for the child. All the while remarking, "I don't intend on dying. Not when I'm so close!"
"Then prove it by staying alive!" Jack snapped at her as he holstered the rifle and swapped to dual wielding his pistols.
Annoyed at Jacks comment, the young woman pushes the body of the Saybr off her and got back up to her feet. Looking around she realized how dire the situation really is. More and More of these damn Grimm came out of woodworks. There was no end to them. So with a sigh she held her blade to her face and begin to murmur something.
Jack didn't pay her much attention, though he made sure to draw the heat away from her while she did whatever she planned to do. "Whatever you plan to do, do it fast!"
She continued to murmur, as she does, a huge white circle like the one from before appeared, growing larger and larger till eventually it covered the entire cradle that they found themselves in. She then open her eyes with a piercing stare and quickly stabbed her blade into the ground. With that a giant knight appeared before the group, armed with a bigger blade.
Jack glanced at the armored being for a moment in shock. "What in God's name?" His shock was broken though by instinct to shoot when another Sabyr closed in to attack.
The knight then quickly swung its blade, swiping away at all that came close. Castrated many, and sending few flying high. The Grimm that once were swarming the crash site suddenly begin to fall back, and in the nick of time as well. As a few Bullheads arrived from Atlas. The Atlas guard accompanied by the Happy huntress quickly landed and begin a full sweep for Grim and survivors. No longer in danger the knight quickly vanishes, as if it was never really there.
Jack gave a small sigh of exhaustion. He was exhausted, but that Aura he had gave him his second wind within a few seconds. He holstered his firearms before turning to the woman. She was breathing heavily. What ever she did must have taken all the energy out of her. She had pulled her saber out of the snow and took one step forward before collapsing back.
Jack quickly raced on over and managed to catch her before hitting the snow. Now no longer fighting, he could get a better look at her. Dressed in the same school uniform as those Happy Huntress, her pale complexion mixed with her white hair, couldn't help but remind jack of an old fairytale about a princess who was hunted by an evil queen. Despite her beauty Jack quickly asked "Hey, Ma'am are you alright?"
The beautiful girl turned to face him. "I'm fine mister Marston." She replied.
Jack cleared his throat as he looked at her, why did he have a sudden hot flash?
"Well Um... glad your fine Ms... um. Sorry ma'am but I didn't got your name." Jack replies trying hard to hide his red face.
"Schnee... Winter Schnee."
"... Well, its a pleasure to make your Acquaintance, Ms. Schnee." Jack said as he helped her to her feet.
