Chapter 3

After grabbing breakfast at the diner, the brothers picked up a map of the town and surrounding area so they could pinpoint the locations of where the victims had last been seen. They spread the map out on the hood of the Impala and using Sam's notes began to mark the places where the victims were last seen. Once they had been transferred to the map, Sam and Dean looked at it trying to see if anything stood out or if there was a pattern.

"Well," Dean surmised. "There's more on this side of town than anywhere else." He ran his finger over the marks on one side of the town map.

"And they're all just off the business district so maybe the person picks his prey and follows them to see their habits and finds a secluded place to attack," Sam added.

"I think it happened probably in the evenings, after work when there are more people out doing things."

"That's probably a good assumption. The more people, the less likely it would be noticed because everyone is in a hurry to get home."

"I'll find a place to park that's near where most of them seemed to have disappeared from and we can walk around to see what's there."

"Sounds good," Sam nodded folding the map smaller showing the marks he had made. He stepped to the passenger door and got into the Impala waiting for Dean so he could direct him to the part of town they needed to search.

"Tell me where to go," Dean told Sam as he cranked his Baby pulled from the parking space.

"You'll want to go across town, take a left onto Sleepy Hollow Road and follow it through the third red light and turn right on to Holly Brook Lane. That'll take us to Brooklyn Street, and you can find a place to leave the car so we can walk to the locations."

"Alright," Dean replied and followed Sam's directions. He found a parking lot to leave the car and they got out. Sam had the map, and he began to lead them to the first of five physical locations.

"This was the last place the first victim was seen at," Sam announced as he stopped in front of a restaurant and looked up and down the sidewalk at all the businesses lining the walkway. "He came out and was heading back to his car is what the cops surmised," he told Dean.

Dean began to walk down the sidewalk toward where the victim's file said his car was found by the cops. He eyed the alleyways between the buildings thinking there were numerous places dark and isolated enough for him to be attacked.

"He was found three blocks away, unconscious and taken to the hospital," Sam rattled off as he pulled the contents of the file up in his head. "The next one was last seen leaving work and she stopped by the grocery store and was attacked in the parking lot. She was found in her car by her husband who came looking for her. They had talked and he knew she had been going there. He found her sitting in her car, not knowing anything or anyone."

"Let's see, the third one was attacked five blocks over where he was jogging in the park and another jogger found him and called the cops. The fourth was running errands, by family's account, and never made it home. She was found a day later sitting on a bus bench."

"The final guy was a teacher at the high school and stayed late to finish some work. He was found in the bleachers of the football field the next morning his mind gone too," Dean finished.

"Whoever is doing this chose windows of opportunity to attack and take their memories." Sam looked around but didn't see anything that threw up any red flags.

"It had to be someone who looked human, or people would have noticed. Do you think it could be a demon?"

"What would a demon want with human memories? They are going to get a person's soul if they go to Hell," Sam offered. "I think it's something supernatural that needs those memories for some reason. It's strange that there are no marks on the bodies of them being attacked, so the victims had to be subdued some other way."

"Let's walk over to the other scene since it's not that far," Dean suggested. He wanted to see the place though he doubted there would be anything there to help, but you never knew.

The brothers cut through an alley and continued down the street going several blocks until they came to the park and Sam pointed to the sign for the jogging trails. They headed that way and strolled down the trail studying the others out enjoying the park.

"It's up ahead," Sam told Dean as they neared the spot the jogger was found.

Dean stopped up ahead where the bits of yellow police tape still hung from a couple of bushes. He walked around the area surveying it and expanded his search looking for something that the cops might have missed. He stopped and looked out toward a small lake that was in the center of the park squinting when the sun reflected off the surface.

"I'm not sensing anything of use here," Sam sighed letting his gaze wander over the park, feeling like they were hitting brick walls every way they turn. He looked toward his brother as Dean stood in the sun, his profile seemed to be glowing in the light. His big brother was looking very much like the fabled 'Righteous Man' in that moment, he thought.

"Okay, we might as well head back," Dean told him as he walked toward him. "There's nothing here to help us."

"I agree," Sam replied falling in step with him as he headed back the way they had come. They went back to the Impala and got in to head back to the motel and regroup. They hoped Bobby would be calling soon with some information that would help them.

A/N: Nothing is coming to light yet and the guys aren't sure what to do next. Hopefully Bobby will get back to them soon. Thanks for coming along for the ride. Reviews/Comments would be great. NC
